for anushi pereira and avia imani who celebrate their one month's birthday in heaven i know she and her daughter passed away exactly one month today and we conducted their finales here in the church and today the angels are happy in heaven that they are one month old so let us continue to pray for them that god in his love and mercy will reward them the gift of eternal life for the husband her son and the family members who have been affected by their sudden departure from this life that god will give them the strength they need today we also have people who celebrate their birthday here on earth we have benedict who celebrates her fifth birthday today benedict is right there in front so we ask god to bless her and her family her siblings and her loved ones but one of our parishioners in fact our oldest parishioner's birthday is today as well her name is pewdie lesoa she is 103 today she is not here she will be coming to mars tomorrow to be blessed but we pray god to continue to bless her i think she's they say when you reach hundred you start from zero isn't it so she's three years old today so we pray god to bless beauty her family children grandchildren and grand grandchildren and all those who are dear to her but at this master i would like us to pray for our young catholics roe candidates who are preparing for their sacraments tomorrow some of them are here with us to make their confession and they will be having their confession here after the mass during the during their duration they prepared for this sacrament last year to receive first commitment and confirmation during easter and you all know the story you knew what happened last year during easter so that wasn't possible until today so we are going to have the ceremonies tomorrow at 4 pm and we pray god to grant them the spirits they need to become strong and very good catholics and so let us bring our other petitions together now as begin in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit my dear brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god unto you my brothers and sisters that are greatly seen in my thoughts and in my ways in what i am done and in what i have failed to do through my home through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask the blessed mary of our village all the angels have sins and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our lord may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray almighty ever living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us with protection with your protection sorry and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns within the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen [Music] a reading from the prophet isaiah the lord says this if you do away with the yoke the clenched fist the wicked sword the wicked word if you give your bread to the hungry and relief to the oppressed your light will rise in the darkness and your shadows become like moon like noon the lord will always guide you giving you relief in desert places he will give strength to your bones and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring of water whose waters never run dry you will rebuild the ancient ruins build up on the old foundations you will be called breach mender restorer of ruined houses if you refrain from trampling the sabbath and doing business on the holy day if you call the sabbath delightful and the day sacred to the lord honorable if you honor it by abstaining from travel from doing business and from gossip then you shall find happiness in the lord and i will lead you triumphant over the heights of the land i will feed you on the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken [Music] the word of the lord thanks be to god me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight turn your ear o lord and give answer for i am poor and needy preserve my life for i am faithful save the servant who trusts in you teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight you are god have mercy on me lord for i cry to you all day long give joy to your servants o lord for to you i lift my faithful in soul sight o lord you are good and forgiving full of love to all who call give heed o lord to my prayer and attend to the sound of my me your voice oh lord that i may be faithful in your sight please stand and honor to you lord jesus christ i do not wish the sinner to die says the lord but to turn to me and live [Music] praise lord jesus christ the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord jesus noticed it as collector levi by name sitting by the customs house and said to him follow me and leaving everything he got up and followed him in his honor levi held a great reception in his house and with them a table was a large gathering of task collectors and others the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said why do you eat and drink with us collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply it is not those who are well who need the doctor but the sick i have not come to call the virtues but sinners to repentance the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i have not come to call the virtuous but sinners to repentance are there any sinners here today there are a few sinners over there one or two on this side a priest said to me one of his friends was sharing his experience and he said he's got the best parish here in melbourne and i say what is your criteria he said because my parishioners don't go to confession they are all saints so if you think you are a sinner then jesus came for you jesus said he came for the sinners which includes also the task collectors and the scribes who even complained that he ate with tax collectors and sinners sorry the scribes and the pharisees who complained that he ate with us collectors and sinners they too need spiritual healing because if they were spiritually healthy they would have seen the need for jesus to draw the sinners and the tax collectors closer to himself but because they claim to be self-righteous which was a clear sign of spiritual illness they didn't see the need for jesus to draw them closer to himself this is what happened most times when we think we are better than others we try to isolate ourselves from them or we lock them out of our lives because we feel getting along with them will contaminate us they will make us seen us saint paul says he became all things to all men so that he can win at least some of them if we don't associate with sinners how do we win them over pope francis said we need to be out there with our hands and feet soil and as shepherds of god's people we need to carry the smell of the sheep so how can we completely isolate ourselves from sinner if we must win them over for jesus but actually that is not what i want to draw your attention to today that was just a distraction my attention was on the first reading you remember yesterday first reading was talking about god telling us the kind of fasting that the forest that the people of israel were embarking on at the time is not the kind of fast he wants today's first reading from the second half of isaiah gave us a clear example of the kind of fast that god wants us to participate in as we all know this is the season of lent and during lent we do three key things what are they prayer fasting and and arms given so our readings in this first half of this week second half of this week mainly which is an introduction to the season of land is seem to be drawing our attention to fasting fasting today can be both for health reasons or for religious reason people avoid fatty food calories and things that will make them sick and jesus is saying to us during land is not just enough to give up chocolates to give up things that will make you sick or things that are not good for your health when you cannot administer justice to your brothers and sisters don't give up chocolate when you won't stop talking back bad about people behind your back it is pointless not to to skip your meals when you cannot grant social justice to people it is not need it is not needed if you cannot be nice to your brothers and sisters if you speak hurtful words for them and you avoid eating food there is no need for you to fast if you cannot visit the sick if you cannot give time to those around you if you cannot be kind to them that is what the reading is telling us today and this is what god expects from us fasting is good but when we do participate in our fasting it should reflect in our lives so during this season of lent i want us to sit together as a family as individuals to talk about some basic realities in our homes how can we try to give more time to each other by trying to listen to one another how do we try to be more honest excuse me to be more honest to one another in trying to tell people what they do that we don't like rather than carrying the grudges on anger within us how can we reach out to someone and tell them you said this to me you did this to me i have forgiven you rather than bearing that grudges and going about fasting and praying coming to extra masses doing stations of the cross rosaries and all of that all of that is pointless the true fasting is when we listen to the plight of the needy feeding the hungry caring for the orphans and the widow and then trying to administer justice to those who are in need of justice that is what god expects from us today it is much more than giving up chocolate it is much more than giving off coffee it is much more than skipping your meals this is the practical reality and this is the only way we can bring sinners closer to god like jesus said it is not the desire of god that anyone should be lost i have come not for the virtues but for sinners and jesus has given us this power to go after sinners and bring them closer to god so to begin with we have to start with ourselves if you want to bring healing to sinners then you need that healing yourself by going to reconciliation and having yourself cleansed and then when you get yourself cleansed you try to maintain that state of grace by avoiding things that will lead you to sin and by trying to be nice and kind to people during the season of lent you can fast from hurtful words you can fart from anger you can fast from bitterness from jealousy from all sorts of things without with if you can fast from those things then go ahead and eat your chocolate you can go ahead and eat all your meals you can even eat five times a day if you want provided you don't say hurtful words to people provided you are nice to people and trying to make them feel much better within themselves so there is more to fasting than just giving up food because when we eat food we eat to nourish our bodies but when we avoid setting food because it's not good for our bodies we want to stay healthy these are spiritual foods that we eat that are not good for our spiritual life and they constitu they constitute a lot of harm to our spiritual self so try to keep your spiritual self healthy by avoiding all sorts of food that we have just mentioned so let us pray at this mass that jesus will give us the grace not to claim to be better than others but to try our best to see how we can bring them closer and trying our best as well to be closer to god by trying to be nice to people may god bless you please stand our response to the prayer is divine healer make us whole divine healer make us whole christ came to call sinners offering them salvation with humility of spirit aware of his call let us bring our prayers to the father as we say [Music] that the church may be seen as the healing home of the weak and sinful let us pray to the lord that through the intercession of the blessed virgin mary may peace prevail among the nations of the world to the mercy that they show to one another let us pray to the lord [Music] that unity may grow in our nation to the citizens respect for one another let us pray to the lord r that at work and in our families we may not be fault-finders let us pray to the lord and that the dead may experience the saving power of god let us pray to the lord healer may cross home we pray for vocations together as we say oh divine jesus you taught us to pray to the lord of the harvest to send labourers into the harvest give to the church in this diocese and throughout the world many holy priests deacons and religions in accordance with your will may they dedicate their talent their strength their love and their whole lives to the glory of the father to the service of others and to the salvation of souls if it should please you to choose one from our family to be a priest or deacon her sister or brother we would thank you with our whole hearts now and for all eternity amen for our spiritual healing let us call for the intercession of saint joseph as we pray together bless us and joseph you are receptive to god [Music] you kept jesus and merely under your watchful care may your prayers assist our local church to respond to those in need you talk to christ your trade and praise help us to follow his example of love you will be part of god's plan for all humanity may we be mindful of others particularly the elderly and vulnerable caring for them in these difficult days you trusted in the great sea of god over all history and every situation help us to grow in faith and prayer to the father thy will be done amen let us now pray in silence for our other special needs and let us also remember to pray for the family of anushi and baby avia whose one month anniversary of code today father this season of land even as we seek righteousness keep us from self-righteousness as we look forward to the savior for mercy may we participate in his saving action by forgiving those who have sinned against us we ask this through christ our lord amen you shall cross the barren desert but you shall not die of thirst you shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way you shall speak your words to and foreign will understand you shall see the face of god [Music] my you always [Music] pray brothers and sisters that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord have saved sacrifice at your house for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of hoy's holy church accept we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that cleansed by its working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts relieve him let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you have given your children a secret time for the renewing and purifying of their of their hearts that freed from disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world as to hold rather to the things that eternally endure and so with all the angels and sins we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed sea who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving things gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your press and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and gregory our bishop and all the clergy remember also are brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy especially anushi and baby avia welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph his spouse with the blessed apostles and all the sins who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced to eternal life i may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by the divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation for deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen may the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit and let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of
