relevantradio.com again i'm father edward looney and i'm delighted to be able to celebrate the holy mass from the chapel of the nativity here in green bay wisconsin this mass is especially helpful for the homebound and those unable to attend a mass in person today for the care of your soul we here at relvin radio strongly encourage the faithful to return to your parishes to attend mass especially on the lord's day for your sunday obligation answer us lord for your mercy is kind in the abundance of your mercies look upon us in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit my dear brothers and sisters during the season of lent we turn back to the lord and so now let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray almighty ever-living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord if you remove from your midst oppression false accusation and malicious speech if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted then light shall rise for you in the darkness and the gloom shall become for you like midday then the lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land he will renew your strength and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring whose water never fails the ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up repair of the breach they shall call you restore of ruined homesteads if you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day if you call the sabbath a delight and the lord's holy day honorable if you honor it by not following your ways seeking your own interests or speaking with malice then you shall delight in the lord and i will make you ride on the heights of the earth i will nourish you with the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord thanks be to god teach me your ways o lord that i may walk in your truth teach me your ways o lord that i may walk in your truth incline your ear o lord answer me for i am afflicted and poor keep my life for i am devoted to you save your servant who trusts in you you are my god teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth have mercy on me o lord for to you i call all the day glad in the soul of your servant for to you o lord i lift up my soul teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth for you o lord are good and forgiving abounding and kindness to all who call upon you hearken o lord to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth cleanse my heart and my lips almighty god that i may worthily proclaim your holy gospel praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory i take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man says the lord but rather in his conversion that he may live praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus saw a tax collector named levi sitting at the customs post he said to him follow me and leaving everything behind he got up and followed jesus then levi gave a great banquet for him in his house and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples saying why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply those who are healthy do not need a physician but the sick do i have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ our lenten themes i think are on abundant display in our readings today for this saturday after ash wednesday one of the themes of lent you're familiar with it almsgiving it's where we give to the support of those who are in need maybe you'll make a meal for someone maybe you'll give to some charitable organization that takes care of the poor maybe you'll do outreach to someone in a foreign land and provide a meal for them or whatever the case might be to give alms to help someone who is poor well what does the prophet isaiah say today about that if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted then light shall rise for you in the darkness and the gloom shall become for you like midday then the lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land that's a pretty good promise that if you give well then it seems that isaiah is saying you will receive in some way too that the lord will outpour his blessings upon you as well if you bestow your bread on the hungry think of ways maybe this lenten season that you can give alms that you can feed those who hunger and then we heard this line repair of the breach they shall call you restore of room and homesteads well repair of the breach we often talk about the word reparation today is a first saturday and so we make reparation especially for the sins against the immaculate heart of mary we try to make up for damage done by our own love and our own devotion as we honor the blessed virgin mary even on this saturday during the lenten season that we are repairing what is wrong in the world well what does our lenten observance do then our acts of sacrifice well we strive to repair the wrong that we have done that we want to appease god that we want to say lord i am so sorry for what i have done except this my sacrifice as an offering to you so we can be called a repairer of the breach or the restorer of ruined homesteads that homestead that's ruined as us that homestead is our world and so we are the restorer by our acts of self-denial by the prayer that we offer crying out to the lord god for mercy and then we heard another way that maybe we have to examine ourselves we heard from isaiah if you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day if you call the sabbath a delight in the lord's day holy and honorable if you honor it not by following your ways seeking your own interests or speaking with malice well what's your relationship to the lord's day what's your relationship with sunday when do you go to sunday mass hopefully you go sunday morning saturday night it's a way that saturday night we keep vigil for this day of the lord sunday what do we do how do we honor sunday you know one of my favorite shows on television that i like watching every week is blue bloods maybe you've seen the show and there's it's a cop show but it's got this very wholesome scene in every single episode where the family gathers on sunday afternoon for family dinner and there they have conversations and they always have a prayer too one of the characters one of the family members leads a prayer well how do you honor the lord's day do you gather with your family right outside my rectory when i look out my kitchen window i can see the cemetery and often on the lord's day on sunday in the afternoon you can see lots of cars out there because they want to go visit their deceased loved ones maybe that's something you can do keep holy the lord's day don't do unnecessary work but rather sanctify the day it's a day of recreation it's the day that god rested and so maybe we rest we read a book we enjoy the company of others maybe this lent examine how you observe the lord's day and maybe you'll see how god is calling you to observe it in a new way finally i just want to make mention of our gospel this is always a powerful one for me lots of lines resonate with me but i think today we focus on the fact that levi sitting at the customs post jesus said follow me and leaving everything behind he got up and followed jesus maybe two during this lenten season this lenten day something else worthy of our reflection might be to consider that question what have i not left behind what am i holding on to that is preventing me from following jesus and maybe today we hear jesus say follow me and we say i'm going to let go of this baggage finally lord i'm going to follow you unreservedly that's a good lenten prayer a good lenten wish as we seek to give alms as we repair the wrong in the world as we honor the lord on the sabbath and follow him each and every day let us lift up our voices in prayer for the world and the church for pope francis and his intentions and for an increase in vocations to the priest and in the consecrated life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace in the world and for an end to all terrorism and violence we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our nation for all our government leaders that they'll protect and defend the fundamental rights to life and religious liberty and freedom for all we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for strong marriages and family life that couples will embrace their vocation by growing in love for each other and raising their children to be disciples in the faith we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for a peaceful resolution for the your sight this day be pleasing to you lord god wash me o lord for my iniquity cleanse me from my sins pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church except we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that cleansed by its working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and the working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously to make holy these gifts that we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of for your me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension to heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and this living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with this holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with relaxed especially with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the and generous in offering assistance to others to live joyfully in the state of grace holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now at the hour of our death amen and join me in a verse of 40 days and 40 nights number 526 40 days and 40 nights you were fasting in the wild 40 days and 40 nights tempted and yet undefiled welcome back to the lenten lessons in the mass premium edition and i'm walking you through the math step by step and i'm going to teach you about a number of the items that you will see in the church and the first here is the altar a-l-t-a-r if you see if you look closely you see this altar is made out of marble it's a beautiful altar and the altars go back to the time of abraham in the old testament when he made an altar of sacrifice to sacrifice his son isaac later we read about elijah and his victory over the prophets of baal b-a-a-l on top of mount carmel and how he built an altar out of 12 stones to commemorate that 12 stones for the 12 tribes of jerusalem if you ever get to go there at mount carmel and see that little altar about this side it might drive you crazy like it didn't my first time because all it could count was 11 stones eleven stones loves those where is the twelve stone the twelve stone was the altar itself the altar can be movable or immovable this is an immovable altar and on top of the altar is an altar cloth the altar cloth can be one cloth two cloths or three cloths and it's normally made out of linen like this is made out of linen just like the sacred vessels are made out of linton it's not a table it's not a piece of furniture it's sacred and it's so sacred the church says that um if uh you you cannot um move the altar to another church it has to be destroyed you can't sell it on ebay or anything like that on every altar there should be a crucifix with the body of christ this is very handsome that the priest can see so the priest remembers that when he's celebrating the mass he is doing a re-presentation of the sacrifice of christ on calvary it's a good reminder for him there also on the altar you'll find candles on our altar we have four candles that are lit you need at least a minimum of two you can have four sometimes on special feast days you'll have six and if you pay real close attention if the mass is being celebrated by the bishop there will be a seventh candle how cool is that seven is a symbol of perfection and the bishop is the fullness of the priesthood on the altar also you will find a stand for the missile m-i-s-s-a-l that is the official prayer book of the church it's not mandatory to have this missile stand but i certainly think it helps because it puts the book at an angle where i can read it this one seems to be made out of cast bronze or something this could last a thousand years just like the altar could last a thousand years just like these candles could last a thousand years and it should be that way we should give the best to our lord we only have one missile stand we only have one crucifix we only have one set of candles we have two author cloths because when one gets dirty you put the fresh one on so you don't have to have a whole lot of stuff but you have good stuff on the altar is this beautiful book in red leather and embossed in gold and on the side you can see here it says roman missal that's a very specific word for the liturgy m-i-s-s-a-l and it contains all of the prayers for the masses of the year it's a very special book this specific book on the outside has a what you would call a greek cross in the middle that's equal sizes of the various legs to it and on the top quadrant you have an alpha and omega those are greek letters jesus christ is the alpha and the mega alpha is the first letter of the greek alphabet omega is the last letter of the greek alphabet and jesus christ is the beginning and the end of all reality if you look closely at the easter candle in your church you'll also see an alpha and omega on it in the bottom quadrants we have two representations of the eucharist the chalice and the consecrated bread this edition is actually from 2002 and 2011 you're wondering how can it be from 2002 and 2011. it's because in 2002 saint john paul the great approved this edition it was an update it had some new elements in it some new feast days like the feast of the holy name of jesus on january 3rd or the feast day of the holy name of mary i think that's on september 5th and some other feast days and saints in there but it took a while for the different countries to translate it into their own languages so the official version is in latin that's called the editio typica i don't want to lose you on that and then it's translated in the vernacular languages in our cases in english and it took the bishops in this country a number of years until they got to agreement exactly how to translate it and it was cardinal george a great man of the church who was the president of the united states conference catholic bishops in 2010 who put his signature on it and he approved this as we open it up you see it is just beautifully beautifully designed and and constructed i don't know how much this cost but it might even be a thousand dollars and i'll open this up for you as we come into the front side it says the roman missal it has beautiful artwork in here and it tells the date that it was published under whose authority was published who translated it and the first part has a table of contents and then the second part has a number of documents that relate to this all the way from the second vatican council and then the third part has the masses for all of the sundays of the year from the first sunday of advent to the final sunday of the year including christmas time and lent and easter and then the middle section which has all of these tabs on it that's the section that stays the same every day those are the prayers of the mass and then the final section has all of the saints days there's almost 365 saints in the calendar because there's 365 days in the year this one here is for may 1st st joseph the worker that's the mass i'm going to demonstrate on the camera and then the final section has all sorts of other specific masses i could give you 40 lessons on this book itself did you like what you learned today well then send us an email and tell us what new things you learned today [Music] you
