[Music] my name is fred and i work for a contracting company i'm probably a hoarder i collect things all my life [Music] anything i thought i needed i kept but you don't realize how much you do have until you turn around and look a few months ago i seen a few roaches so i sprayed this past month they must have multiplied they claim to see one there's a hundred hiding somewhere so [Music] my name is mary and i am fred's wife i don't think that i am a hoarder i think i'm a lousy housekeeper when i walk into this house i see utter filth i see the dirt i see the cockroaches i see the cobwebs hanging from the ceilings i think that the average person if they walked in this house would just want to throw up my name's kevin and fred and mary are my parents for some reason i always knew that i didn't live in a normal house i didn't know why i knew that but i always did tons of times i told my parents that i didn't like the house the way it was they just said we're working on it name is herlane grisham i work for the county we conducted our investigation and we discovered some really extreme violations the house was extremely infested with insects it was full of trash and garbage and it was just unfit for human occupancy they charged me for child endangerment because my house was dirty they overreacted a lot i mean i'm not here to harm anybody i didn't harm my son [Music] this particular case is one of the most extreme that i've investigated and one of the worst and we were very concerned about the child that was living in the home well they told us we couldn't live in our house until we got it cleaned up so we're in the hotel right now and it's so expensive taking half my paycheck for a week we got to do something soon before i run out of money [Music] good morning everybody good morning my name is matt paxton i'm an extreme cleaning specialist the house is very dangerous okay this is not a joke you must have a mask on if you're in the house when i walk into this house it feels like a horror movie i don't want to be in it at all we don't normally have to hose down a house before we clean it but the dust is so bad in this house and i mean one reason the cobwebs look so thick and disgusting is because there's inches of dust in the cobwebs we've had to spray the entire house down just to make it safe for us to throw away holy crap follow that let me go get it let me get it guys don't have to worry about it it's not safe yeah kevin is living on top of the bomb i mean he doesn't even understand the reality of this situation and i can't even see it i got it there you go that is very dangerous my friend hey fellas there were some papers on that table i need to save i have a book there with all my numbers okay but i need to get my papers out you guys took off the table i will get them i'm very concerned about your breathing too right now your health is more important to me than this paperwork i'm very nervous until this house gets scrubbed down seriously clean i don't know that fred's gonna be able to spend more than 10 minutes at a time in this home we've got paperwork where the table was we need to find it in my little black book with all the medical numbers that's it the blah blah okay dad he's looking for a little black that's his medication what is this this is medicine birthday cake okay i feel very disgusted there's bugs crawling everywhere there's food left everywhere how does the food get left here like that on the table gets piled up slides off is that it i think so great take it to him not it mother right now it's like overwhelming and so it's really got me a little bit stressed out right i'm looking for my little black booklet my name is dr suzanne chabot and i specialize in ocd and compulsive hoarding mary doesn't express her anger very well she pulls back she clenches her mouth and she rocks yeah mary felt pretty hopeless and to see fred struggle over a few small objects mary couldn't believe that he couldn't see the big picture i just disappointed it as crappy as it was i was home no matter what it was your place mary just wants to be home again even though a house is hoarded and disgusting and not healthy and certainly not suitable for children she wants to be home you okay the guys literally just dropped right through the floor because i can see the trash in the basement it's right there so once you move all the trash out you don't know what you're gonna find and this is not gonna pass inspection that's all just sitting here just get ready to jump so that tells me it's trash yes all right let's get you out of here cause you're already falling fast in here i sure am fred has no understanding of how real this is there's a lot of serious crisis going on but the biggest one is that this home could kill him [Music] kev how you feeling brother about all this i'm feeling awesome you look like you were excited i am what's getting you excited i mean what's the i think it's just the fact that because i got to sleep back in here again you're just excited about having a room yeah you wanna see kevin stay happy he's a cool kid he's a happy guy and it's very contagious hopefully it'll be contagious enough that it'll keep his parents working and keeping this house cleaned [Music] the home needs to be cleaned and sanitized it's still unfit for occupancy the kitchen has to be usable it has to be healthy there's a lot of damage still in the kitchen the subfloor is damaged the infestation is still pretty bad that needs to be corrected before we can lift the vacate the good news is we got all the trash out the bad news is it's just a start we got a long way to go i am disappointed that we can't move back up but i'm hoping within the next few weeks that we can move back in it is discouraging the family worked so hard they pushed themselves more than they've ever done but it's not close to being enough [Music] i am floor and my house is a junkyard i have two stores building full i have cars i have washers old dog pen oh lawn mower bicycles recycle cans and bunch of other junk from a storage building when you come into my house you can't get in the rooms because all of them is crowded up with stuff clothes books shoes we're not i'm lavinia i'm flora's daughter my mom's house is nasty can't take a shower can't take a bath because there's no hot water here the stove is unusable there's stuff on top of it it probably doesn't even work anymore because the roaches have gotten in it so bad microwave it works roaches get in there as well there's holes in the walls we try to cover it up with tape so the roaches won't crawl out of it at one point there was so many roaches on the tape the tape fell off i sleep in one clean room with me and my daughter and her two kids [Music] me and my two kids had to move in my mom's house about a year ago because our last house was infested with things but i mean it was just kind of like a lose-lose because we moved into a more infected house with roaches my grandkids when they come in the house they walk through the little pass to make to get to the room where we sleep watch tv and do everything that i stay up most of the night fighting roaches off of my kids like making sure they're not crawling on them because mia doesn't like it nico doesn't like it like he would wake up crying because they'll be like crawling on him good morning everybody good morning oh wow this is a strong group i can tell by the voices i'm dorothy brenninger i'm a professional organizing expert and i specialize in hoarding my plan includes moving the cars getting in the front door actually creating a path through this great wall of china that flora has in her house pulling the stuff out and then trying to make sense of the rest of the house on that note we are going to get going so let's head to the cars bring along everybody so let's do it grab something and take it away [Music] first time we've been able to open this door and get in what do you say we hit the kitchen absolutely i'm in are all of you that's this okay kitchen lead the way coming out with trash bag number one flora you are a tornado you are really doing it today and i'm super proud of you we're on the home stretch [Music] [Music] [Music] we're going in my house yeah [Music] family what do you think about what you see in here i love it i love it this is even better than what i imagined now flora i'm particularly interested in your reaction i mean this is your house so tell me what you think when you're looking around here i like it i got room to move around everyone had to slide through it and not only that 12 of us are fitting in the room right now right that was not something we could do when we started that's absolutely true well we couldn't even get in that front door could we no this is the first time being through that front door and probably [Music] able to sit down and breathe wow flora this is your new bedroom did we get it sort of right for you in terms of what you like yes this has her name written all over it all you had to do is just paint it on the wall i'm kind of curious about one other thing tell me about the last time you slept in a queen-size bed i said by three oh she don't sleep obviously i heard mia say something what'd you say mia what did you say that you wanted to see can i see my bed yes ma'am cause that's what you're gonna stay in okay all right go right on in uh oh look you've been go right on in baby walking in and seeing the kids bedroom and seeing that they're going to have their own bed it's really special for me because that's what i wanted from the beginning [Music] there's a lot more space for them to play and play with their toys they don't have to worry about knocking down anything the roach is crawling on them at night all of that's gone all that worry and stress that we had on us about the kids being in the house is all gone it's a kitchen this is what my space to come through yeah that's what it used to be laura tell me what you want to do with this room i like baking and cooking and stuff and everything so i don't want to bake like cakes cookies so i want to get back to doing that kind of yeah cleaning out the house i feel like it has brought the family closer together with the house being clean we can all get back together and start mending the family [Music] flora is that a smile i saw [Music] i'm mary i'm a retired teacher and i taught almost 39 years obviously i like to collect things or my house would not be the cluttered mess that it is today the outside i try to have look appropriate because i want to keep up appearances but the inside is a total disaster and that's why i don't have people over i'm kathy i'm mary's friend she didn't let me in her house at first well it's a disaster zone and then of course i looked in the window i'm trying to walk here and i'm like mary you're a hoarder i'm elizabeth and mary is my aunt mary is a hoarder to the maximum she shop shop shops she brings stuff in and rarely ever takes anything out there may be clothes that have fallen there may be books there's even school supplies dumped there thinking i would get back to it but that was before we had the little critters that came in i think the rats are out of control they'll eat anything they'll chew through the plastic for the dog treats or the parmesan cheese even eat leather and shoes and leather and purses they're about eating me out of house and home but the biggest thing is that the mess they're leaving behind not only knocking stuff over but the pee which smells and their little turd things it's disgusting the biggest rat i've seen is about 16 17 inches i'll see one disappear and then it's like there's a little scrambling noise and then you'll hear these little chirps i can hear it sounds like chewing in the walls i definitely know that mary's neighbors do not like her i'm mike and i'm mary's neighbor i'm concerned about rodents every exit from that house points to my house if she doesn't get this cleaned out i definitely will press it with authorities mary we have an enormous amount of people here yes for a reason this is a very big task my name is matt paxton i'm an extreme cleaning specialist this house is extremely dangerous i'm not talking like oh it could catch on fire the best thing that could happen to this house is if it caught on fire brought terminx in to help with the pests we've got service master here safety safety safety is gonna be the big word today we are in an area of the country that has both the hondavarus and the bubonic plague we had it tested i think we're good but we have to go in with the gear assuming that we're not good a level of infestation like this we would recommend to fumigate the whole home i'm rico with turn x this is probably one of the worst cases i've seen so we have to have this all removed all right hopefully she will make good decisions what about stuff like this that sealed what do you see all of that well i see they've been walking on it that's hearing pretty much everything in this room has we call it katina and it's so it's red feet and wet poop this is contaminated and by that we can't really save it what about food beer or alex no there's really nothing here i would feel comfortable with you consuming nothing in this house can be saved it's all destroyed it's all covered in inches and inches and inches of pea and poop they use this as a step what happens is it's actually urine first and then they they poop they actually used this handle as a ladder to climb up into other shelves this isn't mary's house this is the rat's house you see all of this this is just all right it still shocks me a little bit how much we're finding we can't spend two hours in the house straight we can barely spend 30 minutes straight families getting frustrated they're getting disgusted i almost threw up oh i can't do this anymore i can't i know there's a combination of the hoarding and all the stuff you have to wear i'm not sure but i can't believe there's eight or ten of us in there and there's still more stuff i mean we should have cleaned it out by now it's just more layers and layers we're stuck right now no chance we'll clean this house [Music] this is the base of the kitchen table i mean this is the color it's supposed to be and this is what it really is this is all just poop and you see that at the very bottom it's just caked i mean it's literally inches and inches thick of poop if the base of my house looks like that i don't want to live in it [Music] some mice are popping up so now we know in the same house we've had cats dogs rats and mice [Music] i'm getting out the way [Music] it's basically a tom and jerry episode right now the rats are the least of my worries i'm coming across structural issues you see the floor for only moving it's from all the urine and all the moisture that's been in this house this is right under the kitchen table so we know a lot of mice and rats were living here the water has come from over there you can start to see where it is starts over at the sink it comes here now watch the floor move when i move my foot this is very very very dangerous that means the subflooring is gone this is bad this house as you move more stuff out see how damaged this house really is this house is not safe mary do you want them to not put it on and you can ask matt about it what about all the stuff that was in this curio rats that lived in there we're at a point where a lot of the stuff is saturated beyond okay so okay why don't we go in mary why don't we see what's going on the dining room and living room were cleared out so i took mary in and i was not prepared for what i saw i've never honestly seen anything like this in my life the entire floor was covered with rat feces look over here this looks like where they lived it looks like someone dropped coffee on the floor and that's actually all rat poop i didn't realize it was quite this extensive yeah if this was all human poop and not red poop what would you think about this house it would need to be torn down so there you go i think she's getting it and she finally said look it's gross throw it away i'm hoping we've made the turn [Music] we can go in the front door oh my gosh the family was like wow it's so spacious it's ruined ew the most important thing was to get the food out so that we can properly fumigate for the rats right and we can do that and that starts in two days we took almost 30 tons of trash out of this house here is my bigger concern once you get everything out you start to really see how bad it's rotted out this house has to be gutted and i'm just going to be really blunt you have to make a mathematical decision now her house is done and she's now starting to understand the financial implications of that it might be smarter to bulldoze it and rebuild or sell and move on this is a great example of what hoarding can do to your home if you ignore something long enough it can ruin itself physically and it can ruin you financially i'm just going to have to make some decisions how much money to put into it to just take a loss or i don't know if i'm even going to have to file bankruptcy i don't know sorry mary i wish it could have been better for you i'm really sorry it is a total 100 loss she is not gonna live there she's gonna come live with me and it's done i didn't think it was gonna be this bad ironically she filled a house with a bunch of items on sale to save money and in essence they cost her her entire life's fortune [Music] [Music] i'm judy and i'm a former food service worker my mobile home looks like this it needs a lot of work it's healthy it's cluttered it's not safe and then these mice are running all over the house i'm maxine and i'm a long time friend and neighbor of judy's she has tried several times to capture the mice but she won't let them be killed so she has taken recently to feeding them they're her friends i feel sorry for them because i know they're hungry and i don't want them to die i am a hoarder but i am also a germaphobe [Music] she very much has this feeling of germs everywhere everybody everywhere the fact that she's a germaphobe and that she's continued to live in the situation that she lives in is really very hard to weigh i'm renee and i'm judy's caregiver and neighbor a neighbor of ours introduced us to each other and we just kind of jailed and ended up becoming friends and then i went to school to become a caregiver because i felt like judy needed some help she sanitizes things in the sun regularly if we have a real hot day i want to put out things in the sun in my mind i feel like they're gonna be sanitized washing clothes for me is a big job she averages washing one load of laundry eight times in a row before she kind of feels like they're clean and she always uses bleach and so it takes the color out of her clothes and everything i just do not understand why i am a germaphobe and yet live like i do judy likes to write up lists and it could be anything from trying to remember to buy a light bulb to go grocery shopping pay bills lists are extremely hard to let go even if they're 40 some years old i still want to keep them thinking someday i'll go through them but it's not just lists it's a book maybe old catalogs maybe that i haven't looked at newspapers or the funnies are in there or some cute picture of a dog or an animal can't let that stuff go until i've gotten through it i'm sheri and judy is my mother my mother is a hoarder and always has been when i was growing up as a little girl i just didn't know how to deal with it but as i was getting older i'm like mom what are you doing the reason they're by myself wasn't easy because she got kind of rebellious when i was like ten it's when we kind of started having a lot of trouble we just butted heads a lot and i would try my best to clean up the living room maybe the dining room do the dishes and it would stay that way for a brief period and it could be a day and then it would be messy again i just told her i said i know that would be devastating to you but it might be the very best thing for you i want her to be safe i want her to be healthy despite everything that's happened i still want the best for her good morning you guys good morning good morning my name is corey chalmers i'm an extreme cleaner that specializes in biohazard and hoarding judy how you doing today i honestly feel like i met my execution oh well that's not a good start to the day listen but i'm trying you have a lot of people that are here to help you okay like your granddaughter who's here for the first time in her life how do you feel today christina nervous to see what it looks like i don't really know what to expect [Music] i know this is hard for my grandma because she's not used to people coming in her house what are your concerns for today things being taken from me that i don't want to be okay people in there going through my stuff it is probably going to be hard so one thing that we might think about is that this might represent your best chance toward really being happy safe and healthy judy's obviously really distraught right now about this whole process she does not seem ready to have people touching her stuff i think the best thing i can do at this point is to take her in just one-on-one work with her and learn what her parameters are what her rules are as far as what she'll let go and what she wants to keep so what if we talk about these shredded up newspapers on the floor there's droppings on them there's there's urine on them from the rodents so what prevents you from throwing stuff like this away i have to go through it and look through it first tell me what you would expect that might be in something like this that you would have a loss of um an article that i want to look at a picture of maybe a an animal a key picture this is from over a year ago i know it and it's been on your floor you know it and you haven't read it yet right it's something that i want to keep until i can look at it the problem is the very first thing that i picked up in here you want to hang on to and so i'm pretty sure that everything else that i pick up you're going to have reasons to want to hang on to too and nothing will change and we'll leave here with the fear of you dying in this home the goal right now is to make some decisions on all the things that we put in boxes so this is where it's going to get a little challenging for you do you want to keep this yes i do i can bleach them i'll keep keep oh yeah keith i know it's icky but don't throw it away why it's got mouse poop on it i know it everything does a mouse has pooped on it fine that one's fine judy has a reason or excuse for everything and one of the ones she keeps saying is that she's going to clean stuff keep just like she said that laying something out in the sun is going to somehow sanitize it i'm going to challenge one of your cleaning processes okay so i'm going to get my atp monitor i'm going to swab the surface of something that she says is cleaned by the sun and prove to her that it's not working below 40 on this is clean 1158 so is your process working no i'm not doing this to embarrass you no i'm shutting i haven't washed it yet with how about the bowl would you clean that um what's in the bottom mouse yeah mouse crap if we weren't here would you keep this no why haven't you thrown it away yet i haven't gotten to do it yet okay and again that's the issue i know you're never going to get to this no i know it right now you have 25 people standing around to help you get to it do you want to get to it or not can you let go of this stuff to save your life mom i am scared for your health i'm gonna have to call somebody to pull you out of there and i don't want that let me take these boxes and get them out of here let me see what's in there first just say dump it do it say it can't that some of that means something to me what does this mean to you can be watched i'm done is that more important than your daughter i'm just all kinds of emotions right now i don't know what to do we can't force her to do it we're running out of time and i don't think she understands the gravity of what's at stake we're just switching tactics to harm reduction which is just all about your safety in the home just making pathways to your exits and to your important functional items your kitchen your bathroom three foot wide with your walker i think that's necessary okay there's things that we're not gonna be able to fix today that are gonna make a safe home that's functioning utilities i know the toilets haven't been working so that's something you're going to have to address but what we can do is make the pathways okay we'll start the process but there's a lot to be done there to make those pathways it's not easy to shuffle that stuff around to open up three feet this is what we're up against underneath all those boxes and big things is tons of paper and i know you have a hang up on paper and i'm begging and pleading with you to let us remove that so we can get to the door there's absolutely no reason why you need any of that so if you scoop it up though there's some good stuff what that's so important that you not that it's so important i just want there's a the film might be some years ago oh this is trash this looks like it has been sitting here a good 10 years those i can return and get the money for it i could you're a lot of money and then you're look at me i can return the money for it nobody's going to want to buy that look at me this is it you have got to trust corey and his guys you have got he's not going to go through it i mean you have got to do this please how far are we all right all right we just want to deal with the stuff on the floor right there that's it make this sacrifice for your future please just don't go yes okay i'm gonna deal with this i promise you just this okay just kind of go through stuff please i promise you i will okay let's get you out to the tent and i promise i will make progress in here that you can trust okay is sherry in there she's in the house come in a minute she's just having a moment wow we're trying to get to the front door you guys that's where our focus needs to be our time's up now it's time to take judy and her family into the house to see the little bit of progress we were able to make not a ideal ending by any means we came in here with the best intentions we tried every trick in the book with her and yet devastatingly we're walking away with her having not much change at all there's still a lot of health hazard safety hazards in the home as a licensed psychologist i'm obligated to notify the proper agencies when i see that an older person is in danger and judy is most definitely in danger i'm going to call adult protective services none of us would feel good if something bad were to happen to you in this house i think we would all feel a certain sense of responsibility it's all going to be a long road ahead but i'm still going to be here for her i'll still do whatever i can to support her no thank you that seems like it's a lot more important than some newspapers doesn't it [Music] i wish i could have done better i know i disappointed myself and everybody but i'm very very grateful for everybody's kindness that means a lot you take good care of yourself all right [Music] i'm mary i'm retired from 25 years in the military i love to collect everything victorian mostly everything that i have that is victorian is authentic victorian was absolutely gorgeous it's like touching part of the past i'm lee mary's my mother victorian stuff i don't know that's just something she liked i guess she'll say this is victoria and that's for tauren it all looks like uncomfortable junk to me i'm heath and mary's my mom i could probably take a rock and tell her it's an antique and she'd buy it i think she was bamboozled many times over the years my name is adrienne and my mother is mary she hasn't lived in her house for about two years because it's just so hoarded she has so many things in there i'm arianna and mary is my grandmother i think it's unfair that she has to live with us because she can't clean her own house there's already a whole section of the basement filling up her room is packed the closet's packed unfortunately i don't think the house is really big enough for all of us if she doesn't clean up her house then she's gonna have to move out like she can't live with us she needs somewhere to live she needs to get away from my sister my sister needs to live her own life what kid's having a house if you can't live in it good morning everyone good morning good morning my name is corey chalmers and i specialize in the cleaning of extreme hoarding situations mary by definition is an extreme hoarder she hasn't even been able to live in her house because the clutter forced her out of the house you need to have a functioning home that you can come back to and this one has been used as a storage unit for several years she's been living with her daughter instead of addressing the issue of getting rid of these items in her house for up to me i'd probably just get a front-end loader and knock the whole place down my name is dr robin zazio i'm a licensed clinical psychologist and i specialize in compulsive hoarding and ocd okay so you're seeing the whole contents as being junk yes well this is her life and this is her stuff and we want to respect that all right you guys ready to get started yes all right let's get in there i mean the rodents have literally just been living in here that was my father's duffel bag when he was in the army you know what ask lee please ask lee do you want this this is your dad's that's garbage hops it's garbage our father's back from world war ii uh it's pretty ratty man there's garbage you know right off the bat you knew that it's not uncommon that people who compulsively hoard will ask relatives if they want some of the items but i do think it's a way to keep items in the family instead of actually getting rid of them broken chair that was april's when she was a little girl please just put it over there so lee can put it back together and make it nice for her again please i've found probably a bunch of junk that i could recycle a few dollars worth i mean she's probably got a lot of money laying there going to waste i bet that was once a beautiful bench that's what happens when you have too much stuff that you can't take care of i think i wanted to stay better i know i know you do it's hard letting go i know it is [Music] the next thing i know she slips out with a victorian doily in her hand that's covered in rat feces urine and had been eaten all the way through mary you're walking out with a table linen that has rat poop in it and clearly urinated on it i didn't see the hole before i have to drill this point in because i'm not sure that you've really gotten take it out how serious and bad this situation is take it away so i can't see it anymore no no no you know what you're going to put it on the truck because that's the therapeutic process it's like getting rid of an old friend or someone very close to me [Music] goodbye old friend it hurt like it was all i could remind me of is when i was saying goodbye to my husband this is the power of how attached she is to her stuff and how letting go is really difficult and painful for her our main goal while we're here is to help your mom not salvage every little piece of metal and i'm gonna be the first one to tell you that all right not this though cause they're crunched for time and they're just bagging and canning everything and not letting nobody look at nothing first day you said come in here and bulldoze this house and you'd be happy for up to me i'd probably just get a front-end loader and knock the whole place down mm-hmm mm-hmm but now you're out there collecting your own boxes and bags full of stuff now that i could turn around and make some money off lee was great to work with yesterday you know he really helped in the process i'm not sure what happened overnight but today he was a totally different person we don't have 10 minutes to go through one drawer so you can make 50 cents a cup gonna add a tuesday night everybody got one attitude today take that that thing i can get freaking two hours hey but that's our point we're throwing stuff away that is so dirty and has droppings you know diseases and stuff you don't have to see them doesn't mean they're not they understand when corey and i tried to explain the concept that these things are contaminated that we don't want these to go to other houses he became very angry he came abusive that's what i'm going through okay don't get angry at me she got cocky with me the beginning and then the host boy over there and he caught the big attitude okay well don't come in here and just confront me on something like that i'm trying to explain he didn't have to come in and accuse me and start cussing at me you got to try to explain myself before but no it's the attitude i don't like to be threatened and i don't think his intimidation factors worked on me you guys got the attitudes too [Music] the point is it's been two years it's been sitting in that container and you still want to keep this stuff there's only a few things up here that i do want to keep she still wanted to keep all the pots that were on the wall and she would not listen to me and my mom look at your daughter she's crying this is upsetting her and you need to respect that and you need to appreciate that this is upsetting her i do i do hey i want adrian to speak what is this frustration in the sadness all about i just feel like we're gonna go in circles it's it's just gonna reoccur and reoccur in my car i'm not going to keep collecting so i want to see it you can talk and talk and talk like always and say that you're going to do something show me now i'm trying to we have found so much rodent infestation in this house we have a lot to get done i don't know how sanitary or clean or whatnot it is in there i don't know if it's gonna be uh moving condition as of [Music] this is all ruined oh my god this piece of wood is just there's nothing left in it it's just literally sausage you know we've worked really hard for two days the family has struggled to work together but they did mary has thrown away a lot of stuff and then you know we get to the end of the day we find out the house is not going to be able to be fixed [Music] we pointed out all the damage that we know of he said from what he can see best estimate is about 150 000 in damage [Music] you can't even sell the house it's not even a fixer-upper but the property solves value so she has to make that hard decision to get the rest of it cleared out save what she can sell the property adrian i know the crisis was getting her home and out of your house it's not gonna happen we can't say this house is safe for her to live it the crisis is far from being resolved even though mary's let go of a lot of stuff there's also a long way to go where are we leaving you guys as a family i'm not gonna kick my mom out of the house but i'd like to work toward having her sell her house as soon as possible and get her into a senior community unfortunately this is the effect that extreme hoarding has on houses lack of maintenance and allowing rodents to live inside of a house for literally years and years they will destroy a house actually ironically in the morning briefing yesterday lee said we should just bulldoze the house and now we find out he's probably right [Music] my name's annie i take care of my disabled husband we have been married for 32 years he's had blood pressure and diabetes issues ever since i've known him about a year ago he was diagnosed with parkinson's disease he is totally dependent on me to do everything for him i've tried to clean house a lot of times i can't get anything done my name is sarah and annie is my mom my dad fell down in the driveway and he broke his rotator cuff and my biggest fear is that if he were to fall again with the amount of stuff that's there he could break a hip or worse he could literally die from that my name is freddy and annie is my mom there's a lot of stuff in there most of it is useless junk i guess you could say i'm used to it my brother freddie we have been concerned about him for a while he seems to be depressed he doesn't have a lot of real motivation to do things like get a job or buy a car like other teenagers his age might have i think a lot of that stems from this you know just sort of learned hopelessness i don't think it's all that big a deal but that could be because most the time i'm just taking naps the truth is i'm afraid for their lives [Music] some of the houses i clean i just go in and there's just a weekly routine sweeping dusting mopping vacuuming and i just get in and get it done the reason that she doesn't do more in her own house is because it just seems hopeless you work for hours and you look around and it all looks the same [Music] the previous tv got fried from roach infestation i have put out the foggers i have sprayed i have put out the boric acid powder my dad and my brother both have really bad allergies and asthma problems and we know that roaches and stuff that they leave behind is really the worst thing for asthma this is not a situation that is okay anymore i tried to do the best i could but didn't seem like it was very good it's not a situation that i'm gonna step back and pretend like it's not there good morning good morning i'm dorothy brenninger i'm a professional organizing expert and i specialize in hoarding this is one big group thank you for all being here to meet annie and know that she cleans homes for a living and then to go into her house unbelievable incongruent you folks have been living in this house we haven't so you're used to things that we're not as used to the minute we start moving things around dust and mold starts kicking up so i want the team to wear masks any questions one thing to say you have one more thing to say let's get her done let's get her down i am coming across so many little families of roaches and even my 1 800 got junk guys are completely creeped out apart from that i see lots of broken or deteriorated furniture this couch did i hear you wanted it to go to trash i did say that annie has really never made a decision it would okay eventually i'm usually pretty organized i'm thinking of you choosing one out of that bin to recycle my name is mark pfeffer i'm a licensed psychotherapist and specialist in the treatment of compulsive hoarding freddie's behavior almost mimics his mother's behavior uh i i maybe i i'm not gonna i'm not gonna say a definite yes this is a family that can't make decisions indecision has become a lifestyle yes [Music] you need help with this thing or you got it no that's pretty light oh wow there's some that's not healthy looking no [Music] so so here's we're gonna be you're gonna be in the dumpster my team accidentally empties one drawer and guess what it has to be the drawer with the wedding band in it i think that's it's just degrading to watch my mom dig through a dumpster if we don't find that ring i think annie will be very upset i think it will be the very thing that will make this project seem like a horrible idea our first task this morning was to go through with a fine-tooth comb in the dumpster to find a wedding band everybody was so ridiculously upset with me because who really wants to do that they called me over and said can we stop we're sweaty we're full of roaches can we stop and i said can you go for another half hour i think we found us oh my god you have to be kidding me [Music] yeah that's a gold wedding band are you guys crying we called annie over praying that this was her wedding band please please tell me this is it the organizer said annie is this it and she opened up the jar and she said please annie that's it because we found the wedding band that engaged the trust again i was so happy we found a whole family of you know little roaches crawling and they're they're collecting over here by the food that can go look at you go what do you think of that so happy for her that she's gonna have you know she's such a great cook and she's you know actually a great housekeeper you tell her that man that is great having the incident with the wedding band allowed us to all grow together because yesterday it was us versus them today it was a full on team approach i think annie did a fantastic job today there were 15 of us working both organizers 1-800 got junk and family members 15 people times eight hours we did two and a half months worth of work i'm feeling pretty good today i think the new room looks really good it's a lot better than the old one you know there's not a lot of junk lying around like before and i don't think there will be in the future i absolutely do not regret my decision my dad actually told me thank you today my mom has sort of shrugged you know but i can't see how she could be upset when now she has a floor that she can walk on i i know that the shame of not you know being able to have people even you know other family members come in we'll keep keep this from happening again hi thanks for being a fan of hoarders and subscribe to a e for more videos and click the links around me to watch more
