good morning hope you're having an amazing day it's mark Wiens I'm in Chiang Mai Thailand and today we're going on a day trip to a place called Mon jam which is a small village in the mountain known for its spectacular scenery we're gonna enjoy the views the drive and do an entire day trip loop then along the way we'll probably stop some other places we might have some food we might go to a market we'll see what happens but I'll share with you this entire day trip we're taking off from Joel's house in young Mike let's go alright and we are setting off Shola's here good morning ma me and Mike are talking to Grandma talking to Grandma in the back but depending of course where you start out from Chiang Mai I could be around a 45-minute to one hour drive I love this place so going up to Montana going down into the town of making a loop just right now getting outside of the city and heading towards the mountain in the distance but it's still raining it's drizzling the mountains are in the clouds but it's gonna be beautiful no matter what and from here we just go straight up into the mountain next stop will be Mon cam [Music] twists and turns and really steep growth over almost with it out now it's cold Wow and although it's not clear you see the sea and tie they call it the Telemark which is the the sea of fog in the valley it's gorgeous though it's so green so lush you see the farms the terracing that breeze that mountain fresh air unbelievable oh man this is the type of area you just want to deep breathe in and take as deep of breaths as possible [Music] [Applause] [Music] we've spent about 30 minutes just enjoying the spectacular views the clouds luckily the rain has stopped and if you just look far into the hills the amount of farming terracing and there's one terrace down there that it looks like a straight up amphitheater just carved into the mountain look okay we're gonna move on from here we might go to the market and then I'm ready for coffee [Music] a little ways further up the hill and down the road and into the more of the village there's a small Hmong market where it is a local market there's fresh vegetables things that are local from the community and also specialize in clothes in very colorful clothes that you can buy here but really nice really peaceful market this is great first snack or maybe this is the only cooked snack at the market she's serving something called cow poo thing which is something I've never heard of or seen before and she has these little pancakes made from both rice berry which is the purple rice as well as black sticky rice a combination and that she grills it and then looks like he's gonna add some sauce [Music] she has three different sweet flavors that you can add one is condensed milk one is numb eye which is sugar cane and the third is sesame black sesame so I chose the black sesame which is made into like a paste it smells smells really good and along with the roasted sticky rice now is extraordinary the texture of that rice that roasted rice is really gummy and sticky and warm and then watching this black sesame paste which is just delicious flavor there's some sugar in there for sure hmm I love my cup stop one mock mock up like a would you just look good mommy just by you you can buy some new clothes they have some children's toys but it's great that you're directly supporting the community and I think next we're gonna we got to buy some fruit so some of the local fruits you can see here avocados egg fruit which is I think the other English name is kind of stealth then there's peaches but look like a some kind of other another variety of peaches not the fuzzy peaches oranges plums yeah from the selection the most unique fruit is the egg fruit which this one almost is like a sweet potato [Music] although he's really good tastes like hmm actually it tastes more like a plum Oh I think we managed to get one kilo of every fruit they offer here this at this time including an entire melon a three kilo melon to bring back to Bangkok with us this is one of the most pleasant little markets that's fantastic yes all the fruits are delicious the little snack is delicious that was a great time as I hate cob okay awesome we cool we're stepping into a little restaurant which is right at the market here overlooking look at the view they have and this is just a family-run restaurant you wouldn't know this from the front of the restaurant but step out onto this Terrace in the back and it just opens up with a view of the the farming terraces oh it's beautiful and that's fresh cool air this is a great spot they're so friendly there - they're just so willing to adapt their menu and cook some of their local dishes so it's I can't wait to eat [Music] sitting here starting to shiver a little bit because it's overlooking the edge so the breeze is coming through this restaurant the vegetable content of this meal everything grown from probably dug within eyesight that looks amazing the avocado seller but the rest of these are just very local mom dishes a simple boiled vegetable what did you go by punkin no Papa Billy just mountain Wow just Mountain vegetable that just means Mountain vegetable so we're just gonna immediately start with that hot soup I think it's mustard greens oh they're so nutty oh that flavor is so good it's so pure garlicky that's the power of fresh vegetables just ultimate ultimate flavor and I cannot also wait to try the numpy and I'm gonna grab I think there's a piece of chayote gourd tomatoes look at the chunky it's just chunky with onions green onions and lemongrass I believe looks like lemongrass Wow that is just pure herb is it woman help lemongrass chillies tomatoes coriander green onions there's a like ultimate Mountain freshness it's like breathing fresh air dumb guy someone try [Music] she said this is a boiled chicken with type O it's almost better chicken at the top but it's just full of herbs and dill and basil and vegetables and hmm and if you smell that amaranth yeah look at that set is just gloriously filled with vegetables it's feels tingly [Music] the pepper in there to do through there's pepper in there episode the total fruity pepper his day [Music] and I like how their chicken is just there for the flavor but so many herbs and vegetables in that mix yeah you gotta try some of this this is this is a privilege to get a little ball this because this is what they were cooking for themselves to eat again these are Earth's star mushrooms that's just like a dream of umami those mushrooms pull them salty cheesy and I love the texture of them that rubbery crunch okay and then next up for the the avocado salad avocado pounded salad there's avocado you can see the long beans there's eggplant there's whole limes in here there's peanuts there are eggplants oh yeah it's sweet and sour mmm oh that's delicious what again a mix of healthy healthy vegetables I think this num pic might be my favorite so the chayote leaves so this is the gourd these are the Toyota leaves [Music] and just loving this simple Hmong boiled vegetables mustard greens okay there's just no covering up of the freshness of that vegetable it's on its own and it's standing out [Music] [Music] in my craft there like hospitality and willingness to just cooked some of the cook some other home-cooked style dishes for us some of the Hmong dishes which were extraordinarily delicious just everything that we just ate was from within eyesight that was an entirely unexpected wonderful lunch experience for Hmong food we're driving back down to Fong yang which is the bigger town that we passed through to get here still still in the mountains and that's where one of the best coffee shops is that we're going to next [Music] back to the town the small town Lobosco there we are you want a coffee paradise in the mountains welcome to de Bosco coffee specialist this is a coffee paradise they have a coffee school they have a roast they educate they have an entire farm they have all sorts of coffee gear and equipment and brewing methods it's huge it's huge it's a coffee paradise wall yes it massive its massive and everyone is so friendly to just immediately welcoming you and immediately saying hello greeting you [Music] driffold back up what I love is even at the scale of this coffee shop the gigantic size it's so personal and they're so friendly the baristas the owners the the staff are so friendly and so we're gonna get just one of their specialties that they recommended drip coffee to just taste the pureness of the coffee I think that's the best way all of the coffee's are local to from different regions but mostly from Chiang Mai from metal song [Music] his focus his dedication you can see his passion and his expertise his artistic pouring ability for that drip coffee is beautiful and that aroma what a coffee shop [Music] very good that is a good very stuff honey pudding honey process this angel and I each got one of the beans I think I'm starting with the mailing song but we can share because we just get half a applica to taste the difference but even the even the cups are extremely cool on the swivel that beautiful color [Applause] [Music] that smells unbelievable Cheers [Music] what well this one is like very light acidity it's so smooth all that coffee is incredible a little bit of very light chocolate a hint of cinnamon a hint of spice low acidity all right here you go thanks buddy Hong Kong this one is the job Tom Tom Tom this is outstanding coffee yet this one is the honey process no this one is a natural process but a yellow bourbon variety is what that bean says the other one was that any process this one is definitely more fruity more fruity more berry ish a little more acidic you're both really good both really different bull just so pure but whenever I would visit I would always just get one cookie and one cup of their local coffee ingredients including the cacao they grow cacao so Joel said we gotta try these coffee and chocolate cookies that they even the all the ingredients they grow right here they do look really good oh yeah that's fluffy and I love how they including whole coffee beans on it as well [Applause] oh that is delicious looks like a cake cookie dark rich chocolate not too sweet and then a coffee flavor just kind of coming through that roasted flavor really good did you might have been years since I ate a cookie like at least like five years since I've eaten a cookie there's one it's Woolworth you know [Music] it's everything you look around and everything is custom everything is local [Music] from here we're gonna take you couldn't head straight back to Chiang Mai from here on this day trip and that could be a full complete day and a very happy day but we're gonna take a little bit of a longer drive and go through a town called some moon and we might just drive through maybe just stop at the market for a little while just to take a look and do a little bit of a longer drive back on our way towards young mine [Music] it's drizzling but quick stop for a viewpoint at the Simone forest and yes look at that the layers of hills and mountains going all the way back in the mists the rain actually makes it beautiful with the clouds in the mist and green so lush Oh welcome to the town the small mountain town of Simone and we're right in the center of the town now we're just gonna take a look a little little look around right at the market from the junction five kilometers up the road you could have gone straight back to channel my from there and that would've been a full loop but this is a little extra detour but just to see another town that's also nice that's also pleasant just a mountain town but we know it's seeing a lot of northern Thai specialties especially some of the dry spice the prickly ash which is called Mok when the two and now which are fermented soybeans all the different tried dried chilies the local vegetables again but this is more of a real more of like a whole town market here as opposed to the last market which was a village homegrown farmers market when that's all cool hub poplin cob something I always buy when I'm in northern Thailand MUC when similar to Sichuan pepper your tongue a little numb numb delicious just it's just great it's a wonderful spice and very very citrusy and then I think try Joey's piccolo you mean ha any particular um have okay no no okay Barney tough my second lever like a cool market friendly atmosphere and I did a little bit of shopping but these are some of the greatest Chile's of Thailand we've got a young and their dried chilies Karen Joyce some of the the best flavor and some of the spiciest so I am bringing this bag back home to do a lot of cooking to make a lot of curry pastes and my mother-in-law is gonna be very happy for this she's gonna cook a lot of delicious things with it we made it back to the city of Chiang Mai that was a fantastic day trip and even though it was cloudy and rained about half the time there were still amazing views at munge M it's a spectacular place and that's given me inspiration next time I go out with love they have a lot of lodges a lot of looking like eco kind of tent lodges next time I would love to stay there at Mont Cham to enjoy the views the cool weather the culture learn more about the culture so that's also an option but this makes a fantastic day trip and I'll have all the information of everything we did in the
