History of Namor the Sub-Mariner

[Music] what's up my comic comrades wakanda forever is almost upon us and with Neymar the Submariner as a main character in the film you probably knew we were going to break down his comic history it's just what we do so we'll be going through his comic book origin some of his best story arcs powers and abilities and some reading recommendations as per usual to get you ready for the characters big screen debut now let's see what Marvel's rule of Atlantis is all about [Music] some people will say that Neymar's first appearance was in Marvel comics 1 back in 1939 but while Neymar did first appear in 1939 it was actually in Motion Picture Funny's weekly issue one an uncirculated promotional pamphlet that was given out for free at movie theaters then six months later his creator Bill Everett went on to expand the eight page black and white story to a 12-page color story in Marvel Comics 1. in creating Neymar Everett was quoted saying I suppose I have always liked water if anything started it I suppose it was when I got interested in Admiral Byrd's expedition to the South Pole I read a lot about that the more I read the more intrigued I became so when I got the opportunity to create a character I naturally thought of water Jack London's Adventures at Sea were influential too I used to read a lot of Sea Stories and that just about sums up the real world creation of Namor the Submariner so now it's time to take a look at Neymar's comic book origin foreign excellent rundown of Neymar's origin is given to us in Marvel Universe issue one from 1998. in the issue Neymar rips through the side of a Nazi submarine with his bare hand saying this war is over for you you Nazis surrender or face the Wrath of the avenging Sun the captain starts shooting him but the bullets Just Bounce Off Neymar's chest as he walks towards them Neymar says really then you are a full Captain a much bigger fool than your men they at least had the common sense to flee while interrogating the captain Neymar takes off the captain's ring that has a Hydra symbol on it and while looking at it he says peculiar design most peculiar and here the narration takes over as we're taken into a flashback saying it really all began shortly after the end of the first World War I believe it was 1920 when the American Icebreaker steamed into the Waters of the Antarctic its crew unaware that an Aegis old civilization existed fathoms beneath the surface there on the ocean floor lived a mysterious sub-sea people water-breathing descendants of the lost continent of Atlantis but as I said the crew of the Icebreaker was unaware of this when they set their explosive charges their intent was to clear a few icebergs instead they laid waste to a hidden city the Atlantean King saw it as a deliberate attack and ordered his daughter offend to raise a scouting party to investigate but that Spirit didn't save her from being taken by surprise of course she wasn't the only one the ship's Captain was quite taken with her and she with him she was strong enough to have escaped at any time but Fenn stayed with him learning English well enough to pledge her love she and the captain were married aboard the ship but their marriage didn't last after his daughter had gone missing King thakor sent a war party to find her I don't know if the captain lived or died I never knew his name but we see in the flashback that the search party shot the captain as they were boarding the ship the narration continues to say Ben returned to the Undersea City where she later gave birth to the child of her Union with the American captain a pink-skinned baby boy she called Namor I don't know what king sakur thought of this but he did his best to instill an abiding hatred of surface men in the boy when Neymar reached adulthood thakor sent him out into the world he was trouble from the moment he hit the New York Harbor Namor recognized No Authority aside from that of his family they were misunderstandings that led to problems with the police the state of New York and finally with the Human Torch they got along about as well as fire and water until I stepped in I was a New York City's policeman at the time but there you have at Neymar's comic book origin I also have to mention that Neymar is often considered to be the first mutant in Marvel Comics because he has both Atlantean and human mutant genes in his blood but with his origin out of the way we're about to dive into some story arcs and publication history but first you guys remember that awesome scene in Moon Knight where look at the origin of Namor it's pretty much a long version of the origin I just went over showing us how Neymar's parents met what his life was like growing up in Atlantis how hard it was for him being a young prince and how he dealt with looking different from everyone else in Atlantis it's a really great series and probably still the best thing to read to get a fully fleshed out telling of his origin and early life Saga of the Submariner even ends with us seeing Neymar teaming up with Dr Doom on the first page of issue 12. then the issue ends with Neymar needing to defeat atuma another great name or story is The Saga of the serpent Crown which takes place in issues 1-13 of the 1968 Submariner title the story comes from the Silver age Submariner title and it's just iconic dealing with the serpent Crown the most powerful Talisman of Blackmagic known to man and The Saga of the serpent Crown started back in the earliest days of the universe where Gods killed each other to gain the power of the god to kill the God said one of the Elder Gods was the first murderer in the history of Earth and the creator of the serpent Crown which returned in the Submariner series hence the name The Saga of the serpent Crown the story also deals with Neymar having to fight fight one of the most powerful wielders of the serpent Crown Naga this is kind of a quintessential Submariner story and it's actually a story that helps set up a future story Atlantis attacks we also have Fantastic Four issue 4. the iconic story that gave us Stanley and Jack Kirby's version of Neymar the Samaritan in the issue we see Human Torch unintentionally restore Neymar's lost memories when he spots a name or just out in normal civilian clothes saying come on pal if you are the Submariner I know the one thing that'll bring back your memory Johnny then says flame on and flies the guy over the sea dropping him in and saying if he's the Submariner the water will bring back his memory and his full Powers if not I'll dive in and save him but Johnny was right and we see Neymar in the water with caption saying once submerged in the Mighty Sea the startling change comes over the strange darling in one sweeping motion he hurls his outer garments from him and stands revealed as the legendary Prince of the sea the Invincible Namor the Submariner with his memory back Neymar swims to Atlantis and finds that it's been destroyed saying that glow in the water it's radioactivity I know what happened the humans did it unthinkingly with their curse Atomic tests my people could not be harmed by radiation but when their homes were destroyed they must have gone elsewhere Neymar's swims back to the surface World thinking to himself but the human shall pay for this I swear it Johnny sees Neymar and says he's back but Neymar responds you young fool do not feel proud for what you have done for by returning my memory you have signed the death warrant of the human race I am the mightiest living mortal on Earth and now mankind shall feel the might as it is turned against you all and Neymar sets out to do just that destroying the surface world even summoning a massive sea monster to wreck New York City all Godzilla style but of course in the end of Fantastic Four specifically the Human Torch were able to defeat Namor and the sea monster banishing him back to the Sea going through story arcs a bit quicker we have the 1990 Namor the Submariner series specifically the first 25 issues from John Byrne this series is pivotal to Namor as it introduces the idea of Namor being the world's first mutant it's not exaggerating to say these first 25 issues of the run is what brought the Submariner into a new era of comic books even showing us interactions between him and other Heroes like the Fantastic Four and Iron Man then of course we have the 2007 Submariner six issue series often called Submariner Revolution the cool thing about this mini-series is that it takes place after the first Civil War the Epic event that split the Marvel Universe right down the middle it's one of the best Marvel stories of all time and it's the comic that the movie Captain America Civil War was based off of the Submariner story took place once the initiative was already set in place and when a terrorist attack hit the United States of course a group of people blamed it on Atlantis shield and Iron Man went after Namor and Atlantis to essentially go to war with them but not everything was as it seemed as the terrorist attack actually came from someone who wanted Neymar's Throne sound familiar then there's the Epic Avengers vs X-Men story where we see Namor as one of the Phoenix five possessed by the Phoenix Force that's right as if Neymar wasn't strong enough he possessed a fifth of the Phoenix force in this story alongside Cyclops Colossus magic and Emma Frost and with these Phoenix Powers the five mutants set out to fix the world and make it a better place for mutants of course there's a ton more epic name or the Submariner stories but it's time to move on to powers and abilities [Music] first and foremost Neymar possesses both Atlantean and mutant physiology giving him all the powers of an Atlantean plus immune ability his atlantian abilities include superhuman strength being easily one of the strongest beings on Earth and is actually considered to be one of the most powerful mutants he can throw ships that weigh hundreds of thousands of tons and the impacts of his blows create shock waves throughout the entire planet he has superhuman speed and reflexes being so fast he could Dodge bullets and we've even seen him Dodge Sonic attacks and if he can't get out of the way in time he has superhuman durability being able to survive the immense pressures of the depths of the sea this makes him completely bulletproof and mostly fireproof Namor has straight up taken hits from Thor Hercules and the Hulk with little to no damage on top of all that Neymar can mimic the abilities of certain sea animals like channeling the electricity from an electric eel to shoot out Bolts from his hands and here's what I bet not many of you knew Atlantean magic flows through Neymar's veins which can be used as an ingredient for certain magical spells and of course being atlantian he has hydrokinesis or the ability to control water enough to flood entire cities and none of those are even his mutant ability his mutant power is the wings on his ankles that'll allow him to fly finally Neymar being the ruler of Atlantis makes him so important and influential to the Marvel universe that he is also a member of the Illuminati a group of powerful leaders and influential beings brought together by Tony Stark all in all Namor is a force to be reckoned with and I can't wait is an understatement can the Trinity stop further Bloodshed or has all-out War truly begun now we have Star Wars the Mandalorian issue 5. on a familiar desert Planet the Mandalorian helps a rookie Bounty Hunter who's in over his head and finally we have Batman 129 failsafe has countered every move Batman in the Justice League have attempted is The Dark Knight out of options on Earth and that's
