The support group guy at the end is a saint, great documentary

I made a good sum of money in my early 30s, enough to support myself without a job for about a decade. I played games, saw family and friends occasionally, but pretty much lived in seclusion. I wasn’t on the extreme end but I preferred my own company to that of others and there was a social anxiety component too. I didn’t know how to move onto the next stage in my career or life. I was fearful of the world because I had been emotionally and physically abused in various settings in my adolescent years. And I was depressed. (Now I’m fully back in the real world in every way and you’d never think I’d hidden away.)

I would urge everyone watching a doc like this to be openhearted and empathetic. These men and women are hurting. The answer is never yo attack them. Give them your compassion and listen to them. Reflect back that they matter, that their emotions matter and that there is a welcoming place for them if they choose it.

EDIT: Some people were asking how I made the money. No gimmicks, just a small startup, got a buyout. If you want to change, change your daily ritual. Go for a daily non-negotiable walk. Meditate. Face your fears.

I have a few Japanese friends and one is a sort of recovering hikikomori. She fell into a deep depression after graduating college and starting to work. There was such intense pressure to get married and then stop working, and that's not what she wanted to do with her life. The snide sexism at work and the loving (though admittedly fucked up) pressure from her family eventually led to her not working and staying home playing video games pretty much all day, and making internet friends.

That's eventually what helped her. Her English was good, she went to grad school in the US and now has a job here. She really loves it and is still in occasional contact with other (mostly male) hikikomori who are pretty much depressed and typical of the guys in this video.

It's funny after 12 years of knowing about the term hikikomori, after watching this though I finally realised that it's just people going through their depression, and not some made up condition. Hell I've been more or less like these guys on and off for years, without any treatment or what have you. I suppose being born in an English speaking country, has its differences.

Anyway, It's a fucking nightmare to be stuck in these ruts that's for sure. It's probably a mixture of things, such as parenting, the affectrd individuals personality, and life choices. As well as the world we live in now, having access to the internet, video games etcetera. I kind of like that dudes concept using the letter 'U'.

This was great. Short, had some great insights. The scene at the end where the doc enters the kids room is so powerful. You can feel the tension there. The kid was good at being stoic about it, but having somebody in that sacred space must be hard, and the doc casually is like fuck it, let's get ramen. Amazing.

I was really impressed with how straightforward and realistic everyone’s approach to the topic is. The mom was open minded enough to wonder if she was the problem, and the kids are honest and cognizant of their situation

i feel like as the world develops and more and more technologically dependent this issue is gonna start taking place all over the place. This is big problem in north america and europe too. I personally know many young men who has this issue. Playing video games all day sleep all night or day and grab welfare cheque every month and repeat. i feel like our cavemen brain is still developing to cope with this high dopamni driven addictive things like internet, video games, movies, porn. You dont have to go outside for anything you can simulate it.

Near the end the counselor fellow (what a lovely man) said that he thought that this was a uniquely Japanese phenominon. While it seems like it may be more common, I have definately struggled with the same thing and I know that many others in the states also do.
