hello coaches welcome back to another modern soccer coach breakdown this week we take a look at Crossing activities and how to incorporate into your preseason training sometimes cross activities can go two different ways sometimes they can be quite slow methodical unrealistic to the game sometimes it's the opposite sometimes players can be really engaged they can enjoy it and you can link the runs into how you want to play and put a tactical perspective in on it as well we're going to look at the second one we're going to look at how to make it Up Tempo how to make it enjoyable and how to make it related to your game model in pre-season hope you enjoy it before we start please give it a like please subscribe to the channel so you don't miss any more please also check out our pre-season bondle package only a couple of weeks left and that please don't miss that offer it's on the link below five resources 50% off on the link below thanks so much for the support cross and finishing let's go all right the first exercise is from Zinedine sedans Real Madrid he gets the tempo and the work rate from this and The Challenge from this by using two balls so you've got three players in the wide areas there's a three- player combination for a cross and a finish into one goal and then immediately after the finish the second forward Sprints to the other goal and receives a pass from the coach the finish so two balls two sides so one side works one side recovers you can make it competitive you can have one side competing against the other you can flip the runs change all the moves you can change the combinations as well for the cross change the runners a lot of room to do different things in this but a really really good exercise to add that realistic component and change the picture as well okay our next one is from Thomas tokl this is more of a team one where again if you want to build a part of the exercise around you want to involve more players a really really good way to do that you've got attacking players position in pairs behind each goal you've got two wi players or more alongside a server or a coach on the outsid with a supply of balls exercise starts when one of the white players plays into the server or the coach and then goes down the line for the return at the same time the attack and pair which the white player started from Sprint towards the furthest goal as the white player shapes up the cross the attack and pair change their runs you want to try to encourage them to do this to lose markers if they're running from distances and then score from close range soon as the Finish is played the next side goes and the same happens the two forwards who finish recover at the bottom goal so they can work both sides of going one way and going the other so depending on your numbers this can be a really really really really physically challenging exercise and then depending on the number of servers you can you can change this up from angle you can change this up from pullbacks you can change this from early crosses or you can add a defender or two to make the challenge a little bit harder for the forward to score but a really really good exercise again to involve everyone and get that Tempo really high okay before we look at our third exercise if you are a coach that is preparing for preseason training the next few weeks we have the perfect resource for you msse periodization package four webinars from for experts around football conditioning and periodization training methodology and how to incorporate the soccer component into the physical work as well four really really excellent webinars absolute bargain please check it out now modern soccer coach.com shop thanks for the support all right our third game is a little bit different because it's a PO so you've got a 6v6 plus two Crossing game again you want to get the tempo high in this here so what we've done is we've got two wi players on each team positioned in each Corner players on the inside can move anywhere on the pitch but the corner players those wide players are limited into those wide zones so it's 6v6 in the middle but whenever they're looking to score they can play it into those wide areas if they score from a cross it's two points if they score from a regular goal without a cross it's one point and and here's the key part so you want to work on getting those runs there must be a minimum of two attacking players in the Box to score for a cross so that means that when the ball goes wide again you've got that intensity that high Tempo runs from Deep you want to encourage that so we do that through the scoring system and then hopefully the game becomes a little bit natural it's not just across a game you can score through the middle as well but we incentivize those crosses in order to hopefully encourage players to get the ball wide players to make those runs and make the game really high Tempo and really enjoyable so there we have it coaches just some ideas around cross and then finishing I know there's a lot of talk in the soccer Community about whether the value of working on cross and finishing I think you've only got to look at the goal score the chances created in both the Copa America and the Euros to see that Crossing is still a major major part of the game today now the angles at which players are crossing the ball from is changing of course due to different positions and due to unlocking defenders in different ways we're seeing more box crosses we're seeing more pullbacks and you can incorporate those in all three of those exercises just by manipulating the way that the exercise is set up I would say another constant in the Euros in the cop America this summer is runs from deep and players on the edge of the box so again you can work on that there that last game and those two players being in the Box you can add that to three you can change the limits you can change the numbers you can change the pitch size but I think it's always good to encourage not not just say all right we're going to cross the ball where those runs are made where the spaces are what you're prioritizing what the structure is underneath and again if you're going to do that you're probably going to have to have a high Tempo state of play in order to get the numbers in in order to get the white players ahead of the ball and then if it doesn't work out in order to counter press and hopefully restrict the opponent's ability to counter against you so I think cross and finishing has a lot of value in terms of the transfer from the training pitch to the game but I also think it's really really enjoyable for players to practice again getting that repetition front of the goal cross and finishing sometimes they don't realize how much work it is and sometimes it goes in the flow of the exercise so it's a good way to incorporate that rather than doing isolated running or playing for long bouts where fatigue comes in quickly and cross and finishing exercises you can manage the loads keep it to 15 20 second work maybe rest for a minute and a half go again so you can manage that from a physical perspective but players love hitting the back of the Net players love crossing the ball players love hitting B and headers so use that there to set up your practices and again in the summer and in the introductory part of preseason it's good to have that energy and it's good to bring that into training sessions so as always I hope you enjoy it if you're looking for more ideas and
