rev up your engines well finally someone's thinking with their mind instead of with their emotion how they feel about something the ceo of ram now says that the ram electric pickup will have a combustion range extender just like the early bmw electric car it's an electric car but it had a two-cylinder bmw motorcycle engine and a trunk in the rear fender so when you ran out of electricity that would start up and that could run the car with the generator charging the battery and making it run just as fast as it could before it's a backup system now to me that makes total sense you don't want to get stuck with no electricity in the middle of nowhere now they're not saying exactly what's going to be it could be a small gasoline or diesel motor that can recharge the battery while you're driving a lot of people would say well you put a little engine how's that trucking around a little engine well no it's an electric truck runs on the battery then when the battery gets low usually below like 10 or whatever whatever percentage they want then the gas or diesel motor would turn itself on runs a generator that would recharge the battery so it would still be running on the battery and still have 100 of the power that it had in the first place it's just generating electricity with the little motor now of course it's a somewhat inefficient system because you'll have a gas or diesel engine and then that's running a generator and there's losses of efficiency running the generator then the generator has to send the power to the battery and there's some loss there through the wiring and heat dissipation and stuff and then that runs the vehicle so you don't get great gas mileage when you're running a diesel or gas motor to generate electricity to run an electric motor i mean if that was the case that's what they do they could have electric cars and they could run them off these motors but it's inefficient it's only as a backup system but it makes sense to put a backup system on an electric truck really now of course there's pluses and minuses minuses it adds weight it adds complexity it adds cost it takes up space so there's less carrying space on a vehicle because there's only so much space available you got to put the stuff somewhere the point that you're not going to get stuck in the middle of nowhere because there's no electricity if say it's got a five gallon tank you can go pretty far find a place to get it recharged not that bad of an idea now they haven't even said which one they're going to use yes jason we don't know exactly how it's going to go but the ceo claims in quotation marks that they're going to have this backup system and that would probably get a lot of people that are on the fence should i get an electric truck or not to say maybe i'll try it out because it's got a range extender not that dumb of an idea when it comes to marketing you've seen the solar charging stations and there's pictures of them too where you got the big solar panels on top you know if you think that's charging the cars you're living in la la land you had charging stations say there's four superchargers there to do four cars at a time right it would take 20 acres of solar panels to make that much power which is one of the reasons electric cars just oh we're all going to be electric cars soon no it's not going to happen and here's why the fast chargers they're using a tremendous amount of power all at once and a bank of four fast chargers just think when they're charging them fast use as much power as 230 homes so you got a subdivision to power four of these things right they already admitted in california that in order for it to be everyone driving electric cars they'd need a million and a half of these chargers that's a million and a half divided by four times 230 which would be all the electricity that would be needed that many subdivisions to charge all these cars that's a lot of electricity and where is it going to come from you got to worry the power's got to come from somewhere right they're going to massively fall out of the sky and people just don't realize the massive amount of electricity if you don't understand electricity do a little studying about how much power it takes to do a kilowatt it's a lot of power right to give you a perfect example people say well we'll do it oh man okay the energy is still needed to power the houses at home and i asked an electrician one day in houston i said what if everybody in my neighborhood had one of these superchargers ready so the wires would melt on the poles he said those wires that you got in your backyard they were put in 1947. they said it would melt those well first there won't be enough power anyways they get brownouts in houston when it gets too hot because the air conditioner is used too much well imagine adding you know million some cars on top of it he said the wires melted they couldn't they'd have to do a hole not just a place to make the electricity but then all the whole grid would have to be done over with better wiring to accept all that power so even if you said well i don't worry about using one of those superchargers at a station i'll do it at home yeah well the same problem exists there well here's an interesting email from one of you viewers who had a cadillac and went to the cadillac dealer didn't have a great experience to say the least i bought my car into the cadillac dealer for an oil change service rep says we're gonna have to use your extended warranty to work your timing covers leaking he shows that there's a leak the oil pan is covered in fresh oil he says it needs a timing cover it's gonna take 17 hours to do so they say they're gonna fix all this under warranty but i don't believe they did any work at all did you get an invoice that says they did their work and the oil's still leaking out so i take it back then what do they say we're sorry it's the oil pan that's leaking and that's not covered under the warranty so i took it to some other shops and they said no it's a timing cover that's leaking what can i do well yeah it's a very expensive job on one of those north star engines 10 12 hours of labor or something that they charge they said they did it but obviously they didn't and now they're saying well we're sorry your warranty doesn't cover it because it's leaking from the oil pan now and that's not covered only at the top to begin with the other shop said yes it's the timing cover right guys that the dealers can argue fact what you do is have them put some ultraviolet leak dye into your engine oil and you're on it then with lamp ultraviolet lamp yellow sunglasses you see where the leak is coming from and if the timing cover is leaking the green dye will glow and you'll see it coming out then go back to the cadillac dealer and say it was coming from the top yeah the oil pan on the bottom is wet because oil goes down by gravity and if you've got a leak on the diamond cover it's going to drip down and get on the oil pan right show that it's coming from there make them fix it correctly and tell them that you want to see call me in when you have the front of the engine take it apart so i can look at it who knows what they did the first time maybe they put some sealer or something they obviously didn't fix it right in the first place and then them saying well we're sorry it's not covered now because something else i see this all the time especially the cadillac dealer i mean when i was in houston the cadillac dealers were so hilarious they wouldn't touch a cadillac that was more than 10 years old it's their own car right said we don't work on the old ones that's not the old ones you got to do a lot of actual work and fix them right so they just pretend you didn't charge something for it but do what i say put the leak die in go back and say i got the warranty it's leaking out there fix it call me so i can come see it with the engine take it apart so i can actually see you did take it apart and then maybe put some sealer and something and actually do the job because it is a very involved job one of the reasons i tell people don't ever buy cadillac with a north star engine they're so complex they cost so much money to work on when they break generally you throw the car away he says what about car batteries and cold weather i got an old five toyota sienna battery is 10 of 2019 starts right out this year i bought a battery tender so i trickle charge it when it is in use and this whole winter 2022 it's been nothing but the teens where i live but i'm wondering what does coal do to car batteries the colder it gets the less efficient the batteries are batteries all have some type of liquid electrolyte you got a normal car so you got a sulfuric acid better h2so4 and it's a liquid right colder liquid gets then it doesn't conduct electricity quite as efficiently and it strains things more interestingly enough people say well i got an electric car it's got a different kind of better it's got lithium ion battery it still has liquid electrolyte in it you know everybody talks about solid state batteries for electric cars they would have solid electrolyte not liquid and they wouldn't be affected as much but and this is a giant butt problem with the solid state big ev batteries is when they're charged and discharged they have a tendency of making dendrites little spiky parts and then they go through the batter and they short it out and destroy it the lithium ion and elysium iron batteries still have a liquid electrolyte when it gets really cold they could actually freeze and be destroyed so once they get below 32 the good ones all have a heating element they keep them warm enough so they don't freeze that means they're using their own energy to warm themselves up so they have less range they don't work quite as well and then the cold weather they also don't recharge as well so batteries and cold weather don't go hand in hand all that well whether they are a regular battery a lead acid battery like you have in your toyota or whether they're listing them ion or lithium iron phosphate batteries they still got liquid electrolytes and they got to deal with a cold and liquids and colds don't go together all that well jacob says how much would you expect to pay for an ls engine from a junkyard with 100 150 000 miles either you pull it yourself or it's already pulled all right here's the problem the prices of those things are all over the place and it would also depend on did they actually know anything about the engine ls engines are powerful engines therefore the people who buy those vehicles with those engines generally beat the heck out of them they might be all worn out plus it's in a junkyard did i say more maybe it was a high-speed crash and as long as the engine didn't get it it should be perfectly fine maybe it just blew up it's no good anymore you never know they have one that's in the vehicle at least you can start it up and listen to it give you a better idea than just buying one that's already pulled sitting on the floor that you had no idea i've dealt with junk yards my whole life working on cars trying to save people money and i know notoriously they lie about everything and they'll say oh this engine's only got 90 000 miles it might have 390 who knows you can't tell the engine's just sitting there and they pull them out of the vehicles the first thing they do is pull them out and put them on a floor so you have no idea it's always a gamble now let's say you're going to rebuild the engine crank it over by hand with a socket and a bar it turns over it's not locked up you might say i'm going to rebuild it anyway so i don't care then you see how low they'll sell the thing to your butt if you plan on just bolting it into your car you're taking pretty much a gamble unless it's in a car then at least you can start it now it doesn't matter if the car is all messed up the engine's still there in the starter and they can start it you can start a car without a cooling system hooked up just to start it up and run it for 30 seconds long as oil in the engine that's fine it's better to hear them run because if not you're just taking a while gamble and price doesn't mean anything if the engine is no good so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell [Music] you
