[Music] the lord is worthy they'll honor all praise it's great to be together to lift our voices to let our praise arise to him last week rob talked a little bit about worship he said in worship as we lift our voices as we join our hearts together in worship we also begin to see god reveals the truth about ourselves and the truth about ourselves we see our brokenness but we also see and experience the love of jesus christ that we are broken but we are made whole by him and through worship we also begin to see and experience the truth and the love of jesus christ and as we worship the lord penetrates our intellect penetrates our heart penetrates our souls and in worship we are being made whole and we are being transformed in by his spirit so i want to take some time just to pray right now as as we're in worship together at your seat or at home just to reflect on that to reflect on both who you are in your brokenness in our knee but also who god sees [Music] as his child and also if there's an area of your life that maybe you have held back from the lord being able to penetrate maybe a piece of your mind a piece of your life a piece of your emotions [Music] just begin to open that up to him this morning so just pray right now at your seat wherever you're at just pray to the lord right now [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] come thou found of every blessing to my heart to sing thy grace streams of mercy never ceasing call for songs of loudest praise teach me so much your song sung by flame in tongues over praise the mountain fixed upon the mount of thymine [Music] [Music] still you came and rescued me i was bound by all my sin when your love came and set me free now my soul [Music] now your grace is always with me and [Music] never be alone i'm yours i'm made hold by your lord [Music] how great [Music] thee [Music] is [Music] [Music] seal it for thy quote [Music] peace like a river wash over me [Music] immerse me in water as deep as the sea [Music] i'd be in love with your healing embrace [Music] peace like a river wash over me let's sing this out together i said worship your majesty i worship your holy name jesus [Music] break open the heavens and tragedy holy spirit [Music] [Music] jesus jesus [Music] [Applause] [Music] pour mercy your presents and have it all praised [Music] [Applause] all your presence [Applause] is is [Music] [Music] lord lord revive us we pray meet us here continue to work by your spirit by your hands lord amen amen thanks for joining us for worship this morning i want to take just a minute to talk about where we're headed as we move into the month of september next sunday i'm going to start a new series titled the four habits growing as disciples of jesus in a word this series is about discipleship but not just learning about what a disciple is but about engaging in the habits that help us become disciples i think a lot of christians experience what's called a great disparity between the life the scriptures promise and the life that we live but being a disciple is not just about embracing a set of beliefs but about putting those beliefs into practice in our relationship with god and with others in the course of that series two weeks from today on september 19th we're also going to celebrate baptism in both of our services and if you have not been baptized there is still room for you to be a part of that just go to browncroft.org baptism and sign up today finally let me say it's going to be a celebration of the 19th really looking forward to seeing many of you that i haven't seen over the last many many weeks and months hope that you are here even bring a friend around our services we're going to have treetown cafe which is going to be outside catering sandwiches a snowy ice which is going to have shaved ice and cotton candy and downbeat percussion if you were at our parade this year in penfield they will be here after both services it'll be a lot of fun hope to see you here on the 19th now as we continue in worship i just want to pray for our offering please join me as we pray god and father i thank you for the opportunity to be here today we thank you lord for all that you have done in our church even in these last many months and lord we look forward to all that you yet want to do and accomplish in us and as we come this morning both in person and and online we we come to worship you and now and to give of our of our offerings our tithes and our offerings we pray that you would receive them lord and that we as a church would use them to continue to see the gospel spread in this community and through our church around the world and we love you and we thank you in jesus name amen [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] good morning whether you're at home or right here with us this morning welcome and happy labor day weekend to you wow summer is over uh okay a time of grieving for all of us um great to have you here with us this morning and you know as rob said in that bumper video he is going to be starting a series here uh next week that's going to go on for a few weeks about discipleship now discipleship is kind of this churchy word um but believe me i've seen his notes this is just between you and me i've seen some of his notes and they are really good so you're not going to want to miss it okay but this churchy word discipleship let me kind of break it down a little bit for you it just basically means the process of following jesus and becoming like him that's the the heart the essence of discipleship and now following jesus requires all of our being it requires our heads our hearts and our hands that's the process of discipleship in other words it requires a our minds our thoughts it requires getting a sense of our emotions what's underneath the surface of our lives and the actions of our lives as well now in american christianity if you've grown up in the american church sometimes we really focus on the head part of this discipleship every once in a while we talk about the the hands the the outward focus but today i want to focus on the heart of discipleship because i think without the heart in understanding the heart of discipleship it's so easy to go off in the wrong direction so we're talking today about the heart of discipleship it was several years ago now but right around this same time of the year that i ran my first tough mudder race anybody ever done one of those races before ever anybody ever see them on social media typically people covered in mud right my race was 11 and a half miles up and down hills you had to crawl underneath barbed wire over large obstacles that i am quite frankly too short for and had to have people boost me over um you know all through all of this stuff right and at the very end of the race i i come to the this moment there are just hundreds upon hundreds of electrical wires for about 40 yards in this pit of mud and the idea is you charge through this to the finish line okay so you've just done 11 and a half miles you are beat tired but i'm sitting there and i'm like oh great and people start running and i'm watching people go and just like charge through it and i'm like well everybody else is doing it it's got to be cool so uh at the end of each one of these wires you get a little charge right i didn't know this but occasionally there's a few of these wires that had a little more amped up volume than others and i start charging through this bad boy in the mud slip and sliding the first one hits me i'm it's it feels like someone's going pop to my shoulder ah and i'm like okay that's not that bad and i keep on running pop pop again pop pop and i'm i'm i just keep on running to the very end and i get pop right to the head only it was one of the ones that got a decent big charge to it face first as you see this picture right there that's me knocked out at the finish line in the mud that's me thankfully there was a photographer there to catch this moment right this is my glory shot of my tough mudder experience pop in the back of my head face down in the mud my guess is this okay i don't know where each of you are coming from here this morning but as i thought through who in the world comes to church on labor day weekend or even watches online on labor day weekend i got two types of people that came to my mind probably really committed right some of you here are just super committed you're all in on church you're all in on jesus and some of you are just really hurting you feel like you're at the end of this race like you're face down in the mud right now and there might be a few people that this is your last shot you're like god i need you to speak to me now and you know the hurt that i'm going through if you don't show up in some way this is all i have and no matter where you're at and you could be really a combination of those people as well sitting here i want you to know you're welcome and this is a place for you and i hope the passage that we're looking at this morning will help meet you where you're at this morning it's a very familiar story it's a story of the prodigal son now we're going to actually look at a picture along with the story from the bible this morning because i'd love to engage this on a couple of different levels this picture is called the prodigal son by rembrandt now let me give you a little history from rembrandt okay this is an art lesson i'm not an i'm not a uh you know professor of art but rembrandt is a really interesting guy one of the most famous artists of all time obviously and rembrandt one of the interesting things about him was over time his self-portraits actually increased in their accuracy so if you look at his self-portraits early on it's kind of like he took them with a snapchat filter for all of you you know you know up on the latest technology right he he he kind of gives a a really glowing picture of himself but over time he becomes more and more accurate it's like he's looking beneath the surface of his life and sensing who he truly is and that's reflected in his art and in the very end of his life he returns to an image and paints probably his final picture and that's the picture that we're going to be looking at this morning the return of the prodigal son and i want you to take a look at it it's going to be up on the screen right here and we're going to look at the different characters in this piece of art but before we do that i want you just to take in this piece of art and say how is this speaking to you right now what what does this image conjure up inside of your your heart as we're sitting here this morning and as you're reflecting on that i'm going to take a moment to start reading the passage together that this is based off of it's in the it's in the book of luke in the bible luke 15 and the religious leaders of jesus day come to jesus and they ask him a question basically it's this why do you hang out with scumbags they they didn't say scumbags but you know that's the john and mayo version of this okay and jesus says that's an interesting question you know what let me tell you three stories he goes into a trilogy of stories that he tells the first one he tells is about a shepherd going after a lost sheep the second story he tells is about a woman uh going after a lost coin in her house and the final story that he tells is the story of a lost son and that's the one we're going to read this morning luke 15 11 is where we're starting says this jesus continued there was a man who had two sons the younger one said to his father father give me my share of the estate so he divided his property between them not long after that the younger son got together all he had set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living after he had spent everything there was a severe famine in that whole country and he began to be in need so he went and he hired himself out to a citizen of that country who sent him to his field to feed pigs i mean we're talking the lowest of the low if you're in this society right now he longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating but no one gave him anything when he came to his senses he said how many of my father's hired servants have food despair and here i am starving to death i'll set out and go back to my father and say to him father i have sinned against heaven and against you i'm no longer worthy to be called your son make me like one of your hired servants and so here we find the younger son in this story we're going to go back to this painting once again now take a look at the image just of the younger sun in this painting okay this morning i want this to be an interactive experience between us okay so if you're watching us online you might want to write this in the chat but for those of us here i want you to to just give me a little feedback this morning when you look at this image of the younger son what is the one word that comes to your mind yeah go ahead forgiveness okay what's another one tired oh so such a good one yeah exhaustion tired yo man how many people can identify with that one right now right yeah oh yeah yeah you're just identifying i got it that's good it's good anybody else relief yeah healing hands nice broken yeah loved wow such good ones you know as i thought about this one the the term broken did come to my mind as well so many of what you guys are sharing is really resonating now imagine in this story right this younger son is with the father he's with him he's experiencing the love of the father and he does something so insulting he looks at the father and he says i wish you were dead i want your stuff more than i want you i mean what he does in this moment is the pinnacle of pride and rather than his dad saying oh yeah you want me dead huh and then slapping them upside the head his dad says okay i'll let you i'll let you have your way and so the younger son gets all of his stuff and he decides i'm going to go i'm gonna keep on walking i'm gonna get as far away from my dad as i possibly can and he ends up here in this foreign land and for a while he is partying he is having the time of his life right here right but eventually all of the fun goes away after all the money goes away and there's nobody around him anymore anybody know what it's like to live here in this land yeah yeah a lot of us do right this is fun for a time and then you start to feel the ache and that's what happens to the younger son the ache starts to set in and he starts to think about what it's like to be back at home with his dad now here's my here's what i believe about discipleship about the christian life all of us if you're gonna follow jesus you need to hit that point at some level in your life you need to get to the point where you're like i can't do this on my own it's not possible for me to get to god on my own for me personally i i was raised in a christian house so i i knew all the stuff you could know about christianity pretty much from an early age right my dad was a preacher so i had it really bad i went to a christian school i went to christian college but for me it wasn't real in my life it i never embraced truly following jesus because to me i hadn't gotten to that point yet it wasn't till after i graduated college that it really hit home i started to have this inner ache all the ways that i had tried to kind of fill that gap inside of my soul were coming up short performance in all sorts of ways you know all the ways that i was trying to fill those that gap was coming up short in my life and for some reason i i started reading the bible again and i was reading the bible more and and two things were happening inside of my heart during that time one level i was really really feeling more and more empty but on another level jesus became more and more fascinating because the more i read about him the more i was like holy cow this is not computing to the way that i viewed jesus and one night i think it was about two in the morning i had just read at the end of the book of matthew there's a story about jesus dying and the words weren't audible to me but it was almost audible i don't know if some of you have experienced this before but it was like almost audible and i and i and i kind of got shook the words were john that was for you john that was for you and i'd heard that my whole life but it hadn't hit home in that way before and all of a sudden i realized whoa that was for me and i laid there in my bed for an hour struggling with what to do because i knew if i if i turned if i said yes to jesus in that moment that was a life-altering decision and it was a life-altering decision if i didn't but eventually i prayed the most inarticulate prayer you could ever pray for some kid who'd grown up in church his whole life all right i said this it was something like jesus i am so sorry from now on i will do whatever it is you want me to do my whole life is yours and i just started to like bawl and laugh and ball at the same time and something happened inside of my soul that was different i felt so different inside that i had to go to the mirror and look in the bathroom i'm not making this up i went to the mirror and looked because i thought something has to be different outside because i feel so different inside it's like god had met me in that moment and god can meet any of us in that moment if god can meet me he can meet you in that moment let's go on with this story together because here's here's the principle that i want us to to gain from this god is patient with our pride but he blesses our brokenness okay that's the theme throughout this whole thing god is patient with our pride but he blesses our brokenness so let's go on to the the oh the father in this passage we're picking up in verse 20 says he got up and went to his father but while he was still a long way off his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him he ran to his son threw his arms around him and kissed him the son said to him father i have sinned against heaven and against you i'm no longer worthy to be called your son but the father said to his servants quick bring the best robe and put it on him put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet bring the fatted calf and kill it let's have a feast and celebrate for this son of mine was dead and is alive again he was lost and is found so they began to celebrate let's return to the picture by rembrandt for a sec let's look at the the face of the older fob of the father here what is as you look at this what do you experience as you look at the face of the father here what one word would you just use to describe him disappointed interesting okay other other ones passion relief is that what you said yeah compassion compassion yeah what else overwhelmed interesting yeah forgiveness yeah so good so good yeah i think i think the the overarching theme here is how much the father's love is shown to his son here in this picture now the sun is still a long way off and the father is looking for his son to return from this passage he's looking and he isn't standing there with arms crossed as the son walks up he isn't like well you better have a good story and i hope you brought all your money with you because i expect to be paid back he is looking for his son to return and not only that he runs out to greet him now in the day that was no you don't do that as an older man right because you're wearing a robe and older men did not run because they'd have to hike up their robes to run right and there was no such thing as boxer briefs back in the day so they had to like run you just didn't do that it just was socially unacceptable but he does it anyway and he meets his son here and he says his son goes on with the story and he's like no no no no he doesn't did you notice that in the passage he doesn't even let his son go on he just says hey welcome home you're loved you're here let's have a party and celebrate and that's the heart of god that's the heart of god but why don't we experience god in that way why don't i experience god in that way i think for a lot of us it's because we we've never known that type of experience before right we've never seen it practically played out in our lives about 11 years ago i was in a counselor's office with my wife and we were just sorting through stuff in our marriage and the counselor was was super insightful and uh after hearing us talk for a while he paused pause the session and he said john you're hurting and i was like yeah okay cool i was like yeah intellectually i agree with that but i don't feel anything and he said it's okay you've just never been safe before i was like wow okay and we went on for a little bit longer and then we he paused the session everybody left the room except for me and i was letting those words sit over me for a while john you've never felt safe before and it hit me like a ton of bricks the truth of that and i just started weeping in the in the room alone i just started weeping and my wife comes in and she didn't know what to do with that she but because of what we've just been through she didn't say anything she just put her arm around me and just let me cry and just let me cry for a while and we look back at that as one of the turning points in our marriage because it redefined what safety looked like wasn't about having the answers wasn't about saying something magical it was about being there together and that was a transformative thing for me see god is patient with us in our pride but he blesses our brokenness let's go up to the the punch line of the story okay you guys remember the the reason why jesus is telling this story is because the religious leaders come to him and they say why are you eating with scumbags right and so jesus says hey let me tell you why and this is the punchline of the stor of the story pick it up in verse 25. meanwhile the older son was in the field when he came near the house he heard music and dancing so he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on your brother has come he replied and your father has killed the fatted calf because he is has him back safe and sound the older brother became angry and refused to go in so his father went out and pleaded with him but he answered his father look all these years i've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders yet you'd never give me even a young goat i don't i guess that's a big deal a young goat so you could celebrate with so i could celebrate with my friends but when this son of yours he's not even my brother the son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home you kill the fatted calf for him my son the father said you're always with me and everything i have is yours but we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again he was lost and is found let's take one final look at this image the image of the older brother what word comes to your mind when you see this judgment okay disgust yeah that's a strong word yeah what's that pity disbelief ooh ooh nice what was that jealousy jealousy so good you guys are hitting home on some really important words okay here's i think what's happening this beautiful embrace is taking place and here in the darkness right the older brother is looking on and rather than celebrating he's just sitting there outside of the love of the father and this is a scary place to be now some people will will say that the church is full of judgment and i i'm not gonna argue with that i've grown up in the church like i said there's plenty of judgmental people in the church but it's not just limited to the church um let me throw out a couple of trigger words right now okay vaccine right mask right all i need to do is say those words and some of you are whipping out your phone right now ready what's his email i better write an email what's what's he gonna say about that you know it's like okay our whole social media feeds are filled with judgment right now and judgment in distance creates judgment distance creates judgment and the truth of the matter is the older son in this story is just as lost if not more lost than the younger son in this story isn't that the strange irony of this whole thing the older son is actually more lost but he's been with the dad the whole time he's been serving the dad the whole time but isn't that supposed to mean that you have it together no because his heart was not in the right place god is patient with our pride but he blesses our brokenness now realize what i said in that statement i didn't say god endorses our pride or god is cool with our pride i mean the bible speaks vividly against pride in our lives the bible tells us god opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble i also didn't say that god won't let you experience the consequences of your pride as the younger son experienced and the older son experienced the consequences of their pride the bible is clear about that as well pride goes before destruction haughty spirit before a fall these are all things that are happening but what god blesses is a spirit of brokenness at the end of that tough mudder race that i ran as i was sitting there knocked out in the mud i hear this voice and i've never had a brother but it's my brother-in-law who i was running the race with and we're basically like brothers and i hear him go bro are you okay and i go uh i think i got knocked out and and i crawled across the finish line and and he like helps me up he's like okay let's go get a t-shirt and so he like points me to the t-shirts and i'm like okay i'll take that one and i'm like and then he's like walking with me for a half hour i was pretty much incoherent right i'm not able to talk but he helps me and that was a great illustration of what we can do for people in our lives who are that way who are in the mud who are broken but what i want to ask you this morning is this where do you find yourself do you find yourself as one of those people who's sitting here this morning or as at home this morning feeling like i'm really committed to god god's pretty lucky to have me as one of his followers right we've all been there we could we it's okay to admit that is that the state of your heart this morning if so he's asking you to meet him back in the place of embrace to realize your brokenness are you in a spot like the younger brother maybe you've wandered away maybe you're just hurting for a number of reasons maybe those reasons aren't your own you know maybe other people have hurt you and you are you dragged yourself here this morning or you it just took every ounce of energy to just hit the button on the computer to say okay i'll go to browncroft online this morning if that's where you're at god is calling back you into his embrace this morning as well as a loving father who wants that relationship with you there's no better day than today to say jesus here's my life you can pray the same prayer that i prayed that same really inarticulate prayer of jesus it's not about the words that are coming out of your mouth as much it is is your heart jesus here is everything i'll follow you and this morning we're going to celebrate communion and communion isn't just an opportunity for us to have a sip of juice and a cracker together communion is at its essence this moment of the father running to us in us meeting him [Music] and embracing each other and his love for us that's the essence of what we celebrate when we celebrate communion so this isn't just something to get through this is a sacred moment that we're in right now so if you have business to do with god i would just say this is a perfect opportunity to do that if you're broken if you're feeling like that pride is part of your life right now if you just need to run to god and say god here's my life here's everything this is the opportunity so let's reflect on the picture of the prodigal son once more even as we engage in this together and put yourself into this picture as we celebrate communion where do you fall what is it that would describe your life right now are you back in the shadows are you broken on your knees before god jesus gave up everything for us so that we could experience this so if you're with us here this morning you received one of these probably you'll want to push down on this cup until it clicks and then peel back the top layer and that will give you the cracker let's put that to the side let's hold on to that for a second as i read these words that jesus read that jesus says to us from matthew 26 while they were eating jesus took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take and eat this is my body jesus gave up his body for us let's celebrate that together this morning [Music] then you can peel back that lid for the juice [Music] once again jesus was his disciples surrounding him at the last moments of his life says this then he took a cup and when he had given thanks he gave it to them saying drink from it all of you this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins jesus died for our forgiveness let's celebrate that this morning [Music] [Music] aren't you thankful that the father is patient with our pride aren't you thankful that he blesses
