me when i call [Music] he knows my name and he knows my every thought he sees each tear that falls and he hears me when i call he hears me [Music] [Applause] good morning we had to have a reason for bringing the piano up on the stage takes about 25 men to get it up well really about 35 men to get it up and about 20 to get it down so nice piece of furniture and a really great song if not singer a really great song he hears me he hears me when i call so happy mother's day to beautiful lane thank god you're still alive lane every time i see her or write anything to her i just say live just live keep on living happy mother's day particularly to my faithful and fabulous sister tanya she's a great one and to michael antoine if she is walking watching that she's about what two hours earlier than us so i'm not sure if you are but i love you michael antoine mangan hennigan my firstborn mother of eva and gibson i love you you're unique and you're a strong force and i love you my lovely lexie dog mom to my granddog lincoln whom i lovingly call tank i love you lexie glad you're in my family and to all of you beautiful ladies i'm friends with the majority of all of you i'm a fortunate girl because i think that you are the brightest and the best in all the world i do and i'm smart hands down i get to hang out with y'all what a blessing you are in my life and thanks gentry thank you for those beautiful words you made me mom for the second time yes i had you on your dad's birthday talk about queen for a day he told me in the hospital anything you want mick i'll give it to you and you know what i said i was so dumb i said i want to go home how dumb was that gentry you know i had to fight for you by the way i don't know if you know that i had to fight for you your amazing and careful father came from the belief system that single children was one of the ways to confirm and to continue the oneness doctrine i'm not kidding i fought for you during a family discussion and a meal at the old american spirits down there one day he stated that he felt complete and happy as a parent to our one and only six-year-old daughter michael and that we would consider it for a year and one year only and after that we would just honor god's intentions due to the fact that we were in our ripe old thirties well you were created in that one-year span and my intellect tells me that any and everyone that knows and loves you is really glad that this mom's prevailing prayers was heard over the other prevailing prayers that usually availed much more than me by the way i love you gent i love you i love my boy and another extra blessing that i have this morning my boy rick is home for good [Applause] well i heard some of the funniest jokes uh just this past week anytime you hang out with madonna massey you're going to have the greatest time in the world and so i was hanging out with madonna and i we you know we can tell some jokes i'm telling you well we there was some yo mama jokes that came this past week you know your mama so this your mama so that your mama's so ugly your mama but i'm really i'm really a bit too scared to do that this morning because i'm scared i might get turned into the law or at least get called in for some rebuke lose my credentials or my husband's license so many things you can't do and say anymore yet there's some really crazy things that you can do right now that just blows my mind it's an outrageous bizarre but i did come across this cute story of four little guys who were trying to uh outdo each other with the stories of their birth and um of the moment that they were born number one kid said my mama told me i was the biggest child ever born in the hospital and child number two said yeah well my mama told me i was born with all my teeth number three oh yeah my mama said i came out walking all on my own and number four said wow well my mama told me i was tied all up to her with a biblical cord gent that's why you're such a good preacher i'll tell you mother's day begun officially in 1908 in saint andrews methodist church in west virginia is a beautiful time to remember and celebrate the women who have given birth nurtured children and left a profound legacy of undeniable love and selfless giving as well as a legacy of christ likeness and may i say thanks for letting us take out this day a sunday morning it really should be recognized i live close enough however to reality to know that this day isn't always quite that simple yes it's a day of joy and we should and we will talk about the joys of motherhood for many in this room this day is going to be made up of abundant celebration and happiness and recognition but for some it's a day of sadness and pain it's a day of longing and a day of grief there are some in this room who are experiencing this day for the very first time a mother's day without yours here i'm thinking of you some women and their husbands are yearning to even have a child at all some women had mean and hateful and degrading mothers and the memories of that are intense and painful some good mothers long for their children just to be responsive and considerate from time to time and some moms are grieving a wayward or a lost child that may or may not have come with them today on mother's day so it becomes my plight today to find a subject that's going to be relevant clear and personal to every one of us god help me there are several women in this word of which i could make an entire message and draw insight from their stories biblical characters and remarkable people that were gifts in which we can glean and we can learn from their lives the ones that would make the most sense for today's event would be okay mary mary the virgin mother of jesus what a story try understanding that kind of a conception when you're just a teenager being surprised by an angel and told that the child already inside you is the perfect plan and that this is the will of god for your life favored highly favored she could have been stoned for such not to mention a totally totally present mother a totally present figure in his life from birth to teenager to ministry to miracles to literally watching and staying with him through the most unjust act of brutality and murder ever known to mankind talk about commitment what a mother or what about eve the first mother of us all you know the one who made the colossal monumental mind-blowing the this affects everybody forever mistake she probably does deserve she certainly gets the bad rap you know just maybe she was the first one to partake of the fruit because she remembered where it was women just know where stuff is can you have a little bit of sympathy for the girl who didn't even have a mother to ask hey ma how were things back in the day for you she was the first one ever to give birth no teaching no proven path to follow yeah she made some hefty mistakes i had to have a couple of epidurals because of her some pretty hefty mistakes but she was the first mother who ever had to bury a child wow or how would you like hannah now that's a good one she's so well known as the woman who couldn't have a child so she stayed in the temple and took her request to god in powerful prayer until until prayer until stayed until god gave her samuel talk about stickability but what i think i love the most about hannah if you follow the whole story is her ability to show restraint with her words she knew what to say and she knew what not to say her character was tested when her husband mind you called her a drunk but once again hannah demonstrated grace and poise and humility through her words she was a passionate yet humble woman and those two qualities are difficult to blend she's certainly worth a sermon or a jock a bed chocolate you just got to give it up for her what a creative force she was because of her act of civil disobedience moses is born and lives and thrives and changes jewish history now that's that's movie material right there yeah i believe it was in fact but oh the determination and ingenuity of that desperate mother i love the story of jochebed here's a good one really good one the proverbs 31 woman the perfect total woman 22 lines of an acrostic poem in the bible the holy bible that does not lie a poem that speaks of an imaginary woman a false illusion in the bible okay i'll give it to her she never sleeps and she always works that's true for some for a lot but in this poem in the bible the last chapter of proverbs this woman manages a fleet of ships how am i going to do that she runs a farm she manages a staff she sews like gloria chatanye she shops for the best prices she cleans she homeschools her children [Music] she has a feast waiting on her husband when he arrives home from his whatever job she's fiction she's fake and she made the bible any woman who's ever tried to emulate the woman of proverbs 31 who totally understands what all it says will totally understand that often famous beginning who is like a virtuous woman well you think who can find her there's other real women in the bible like naomi elizabeth ruth beautiful characters real characters of god's word with genuine substance whose stories teach and tell us the pain and the glory of motherhood but today i've chosen one that is a bit unusual not so well known overlooked in fact maybe intentionally her story is a really hard read there's so much tragedy so much injustice and much of it was perpetrated by people who were supposed to be good people people who call themselves followers of god but it's an important story because it shows that god cares about mothers because it shows that god cares about us because it shows that god cares about you her name is hagar she's a slave girl from egypt another teenager far away from home her history can be found in the book of genesis 16th chapter to be exact the story begins with abram before he was called abraham god promised abram the blessings of an offspring the blessings of land and protection he was blessed in order to be a blessing to all of humanity that all sounds good unless you're nearly 100 years old and you don't have a son abram is a good man but he was imperfect now siri abram's wife had borne him no children so she decides that she's going to take future in her own hands and she says to abram behold now the lord hath restrained me from bearing so i pray thee go in unto my handmaid that i may obtain children by her and abram hearkened unto the voice of his wife now nowhere do we read in this book that hagar was ever consulted ever told ever asked why she's a slave it appears that she was not given a choice in the matter quite sad isn't it now when hagar that she was expecting a child the scripture tells us that trouble set in and she began to despise her mistress siri this was wrong but i somehow i find it an understandable human reaction sarah's response however was even worse she mistreated and she abused hagar to such an extent that hagar left the scripture says she fled put yourself in her sandals for just a moment how would we feel she's a victim of circumstance far beyond her control absolutely no say in her life's decisions a concubine to an 85 year old man persecuted by the very one that she had served graciously served and stood by sounds maybe a bit like some of us doesn't it trapped in a painful and unfair circumstance wishing we could flee from the pressures of troubled relationships unfair work overworked do you know today 40 percent of women who have children under the age of 18 are the primary bread winners of their family that figure in 1960 was only 11 and while 92 women were married in 1960 today only 68 percent mothers with children are married it's a tough job being a single mother it's tough anyway even with help especially if you care and are concerned about your motherhood and the role you play in forming a life quite honestly i've not ever met a single one single mother today that does not subject herself to grueling and unfair expectations the judgment the worry the picture in our heads of being super mom the worry that we just aren't good enough the regrets the regrets the regrets back to hagar fleeing from sarri this is where her story becomes extraordinary she's the first person in the whole word of god to whom an angel of the lord appears he finds her by a spring he asks her two questions where have you come from and where are you going i'm running away she said it's just too much then the angel of the lord tells her go back to your mistress and submit to her whoa that's difficult advice to swallow causes me to think of the many i know and that i'm acquainted with the mothers who are overworked they simply have no choice they have to go back to work some working two jobs then having to go home to their third job and many times many many times it's the only option there is no other way but then god gives hagar an amazing promise you return be obedient have your baby and i will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to even count i will bless you she's virtually given abram's promise she becomes a part of the plan right there god already knew the deepest desires of her heart and he promised her something that went way even above her expectations god then gives her a name for her son to be born ishmael which means god hears she responds to the lord by saying you are the god who sees me for i have now seen the one who sees me i now hear the one [Music] who heard me in a much similar way god wants us to know the very same thing he sees me he hears me in the midst of it all pain unjust circumstances misery misunderstandings he makes himself known where are you where are you going i care about you he begs for us to identify his presence in every one of our needs so as the story go the angel tells her to return to her mistress and as i said she was obedient she has her baby boy ishmael and she accepts the life of a certain servant once again to sari and now the plot thickens god changes the name of abram to abraham and sari to sarah they're promised a son and they laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh it's funny they're old really really old people impossible god had a plan and in chapter 20 of 21 sure enough sarah sarah has a baby and she calls him isaac whose name means laughter actually i think ishmael sounds nicer it's got a nicer meaning but that's irrelevant but the celebration is bittersweet for hagar because another sun means that ishmael is not the apparent heir any longer so as the story goes ishmael is on the verge of being a teenager and one day ishmael teases and mocks the toddler isaac his half-brother sarah sees this and the struggles between she and hagar that was dominant at one time but now lies dormant and had been for a whole decade the struggles resurface and sarah urges abraham to send agar and ishmael away abram concedes and even gets a message from god that they're going to be okay so he sends them out of the camp once again no choice no voice in the matter no home he sends them out but without much water hagar and ishmael started to die of heat exhaustion in the desert now one might argue that in sending her away abraham was setting her free from the price of her slavery but in any case he sent her away with limited supplies and the provision ran out the scripture says when the water in the skin was gone she put the boy under one of the bushes then went off and sat down about a bow shot away for she thought i cannot watch the boy die and as she sat there she began to cry god heard the boy crying and the angel of god called to hagar from heaven and said once again faithful god god has heard you and he's heard the boy crying lift him up take him by the hand for i will make unto him a great nation [Music] and once again at the lowest point of her darkest hopelessness god heard hagar he hears her he even provided a well of water to drink from in the previous encounter god taught her that he saw her every move but this time god taught her that he heard her every cry both amazing revelations that god reserved for a mistreated slave woman lastly we read that god opened her eyes she saw the well of water she saw provision and god was with the boy as he grew what a story [Applause] sometimes when we are going through a difficult trial of life we are tempted to believe that god is not with us maybe he's oblivious to what's really going on in my mind and in my life perhaps he doesn't even really care i've come to him time and time and time and time again perhaps he's given up on me maybe my problems aren't significant enough for him and he's handling other more serious situations he has forgotten me i believe today that god wants to prove himself to us in this room today he'd love for us to be assured that we are not forgotten in the desert [Applause] you know he shouldn't have to prove himself but still faithful god he's concerned over us it hurts him when we feel isolated it hurts him when we feel disconnected it hurts him when we're tired and weary his desire is to free us from slavery and this ancient story from a time very distant from ours from a culture very different from ours from customs very different ends up having something to say that is true of our god right now as in then i think it was about a week or two ago i was celebrating some news with lenora the news was that eva is coming back home that's really great news we're really happy we sure are and um and i love it because she said i'm i want to come home i was talking to lenora and i told her the news and i was really happy about it and i and i thought that she had hung up because i didn't i didn't hear her on the other line when lenora gets to cry and she gets the snubs and she said is it good news i've been praying and praying and praying and she said it it just really looks like she calls him big daddy in the sky like big daddy in the sky was paying attention first of all the things that we've learned is that god does pay attention [Applause] god sees what you're going through he sees the struggles that you endure he knows every sacrifice that you make he knows of every thankless deed of goodness and kindness that you've done yet he feels the same long-sufferingness and unconditional love that you pour out and don't get anything in return you give and give and give he knows that because it's the same love that he has for you he sees you he hears you he hears you when you call upon his name secondly our god is a god who keeps his promises yea and a man who comes through in the end who does not fail no hagar was not abraham's chosen wife she was not even in the covenant abraham did a foolish thing having a child with hagar he didn't trust god and neither did sarah they moved ahead of god a grievous mistake still god came through god came through and on all the mistakes he blessed hagar and though isaac would be the chosen one from israel and from where the church would come god chose his amazing love and grace to bless ishmael to prove to every one of us in this room he hears he sees he cares he unexpectedly blesses us and he over abundantly blesses us he comes through in the end he just always comes through he is for me he is for me [Applause] hiding under a bush he is for me thirsty and longing he is for me he will provide he will sustain he will empower he will heal he will restore he will redeem he will vindicate oh [Applause] and when we proclaim his great name and put the name of jesus in the middle of our issues be they large be they small be they sickness be they addictions be they lost children be they dried up finances when you put it in the hands of god and trust him he sees he cares things change when you give it up i trust you because you hear me god reserved these very special revelations of this truth of himself and the amazing promises for the future he reserved it for an insignificant little slave mother who was caught up in a life of unfair circumstance and cruelty and he wants to do that again today he delights to do the same thing today so whatever your situation cry out to god in the desert cry out to god you need water you need refreshment you need refreshing when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the lord believe that he sees you where you are he sees your secret scars he is the friend of a wounded heart he desires to reach your heart touch your life and make your story a part of the plan the perfect plan like hagar he heard her he hears me he hears you and the song says i want to hear you louder than the noise i want to feel you closer than the air i breathe deep within my soul burning speak to me let my heart be awakened by the whispering of love pull me close to your heart let the silence now be filled with your voice oh god found in surrender my heart is fully yours caught in the moment captivated by the unseen your loving heart for me is revealed the words i hear you say you've been speaking them for a long time but i hear them today for all of time all of time you're with me you're you're with me you're for me you're for me yes and you have a plan for me and i will
