fuck me that was awesome
The SFX at times was a bit too much, only on 2nd viewing did I notice that '20s music is playing in the background when Alastor is summoning his tentacles because I couldn't hear it over the slapstick sound effects of the egg minions rolling around.
I'd also have preferred to see the cleansing since its horrors are the main motivating factor for the heroin.
But all in all very nice and entertaining. Alastor is the best character but everybody seems interesting, the story is intriguing enough, and I want to know more about this setup.
Holy hell, that was a lot to unwrap.
Quick first impressions
Pros:
Stellar animation quality as expected
Audio mix was better than I expected
Funnier than I was expecting
Nice use of Ed, Edd, and Eddy sfx
Voice acting is on point
Al completely steals the show in the second half
Dialogue was snappy
Songs were quick, catchy, and to the point
Definitely left wanting more
Most importantly, fun and original idea. Would watch an entire series based off of this
Cons:
Lots of characters introduced. Not a lot of time for proper introductions.
Scale /size of characters is kind of all over the place
You can tell lots of different animators had a hand in this.
Some mic quality issues still exist from the clips, though they mask it well with music and sound design
Due to how infamously hard it it to get ahold of Stamper, it's unlikely Pen will be back
Niffty and Husk get kind of shoved in at the end.
All in all, that was a fun little romp. Now it's time to watch the whole thing frame by frame a million times.
I liked it. Excellent use of a half-hour... Just curious about how the culture of the fanbase will be when this gets more traction.
The sound design was stellar. We saw some of these clips before, but the sfx really gave them a fresh coat of paint!
My only complaint was that there was maybe a little...TOO much character design flexing. This is taking “spot the main character” to the extreme. Every character looks like they could be the MC, but they’re only on the screen for a few seconds before another gorgeous creature of fur, eyes and legs walks in. I get that the point is to emphasize that Hell is overcrowded and I much prefer these designs over generic crowd blobs, but I found myself not giving a hoot about Charlie’s plight because Nameless BG Club Demon looked like a feathered dinosaur wearing hot pants and I wanna see the rest of THAT design, but oh those goat demons look so cute and hold still Camera Guy Vaggie knocked out, I wanna see you and look at that demon with the-you get the idea.
Still, this is some high quality shizz. If they eased up in the distracting designs for seconds-long BG characters, I could see this being a hit.
Welcome to Hazbin Hotel! After four years in developement, it was worth the wait.
That was a lot of fun. Charlie's very likeable, and her bubbly, naïve personality makes sense; seeing as how she was born in hell and is therefore the only person who didn't actually commit any sins to get there.
Vaggie's nice too, not that we really got to know anything about her; hopefully if the show gets picked up she actually gets a backstory. Angel is irritating, but he's clearly supposed to be an annoying douche so that's fine. There were also a couple of moments that hinted at there being more depth to him.
Alastair is appropriately menacing, and I like that he's transparently only helping them out of a desire to watch them fail (though he probably has a long game planned as well). Also, finding out that Gabriel Brown does his singing voice caught me off guard. xD
Some of the art/animation was a bit rough around the edges, particularly the first shots of the Sir Pentious' airship, but on the whole there was nothing that really dragged me out of it. I really hope this show gets picked up; I'd love to see more.
I got nothing negative to say. I thought it was really good from start to finish. I liked Angel far more than I thought I would thanks to his great jokes, and I was surprised how much Alastor stole the show in the 2nd half, not a bad thing mind you.
But overall, yeah, this was amazing. A TV quality animation that would fit right in on Adult Swim. Congrats guys.
