today we're going to be ranking my favorite characters in hasb been hotel from least favorite to my absolute favorite my name is imput and even if you don't care about my opinion I still care about yours because it helps us with the algorithm when you put it in a comment down below so let me know your favorite and least favorite characters right now so you can see how your list compares to mine as you watch and if you haven't seen it yet we did put out a short special sort of fake amation involving mcut and my alternate deep sonas go check it out if you haven't yet Link in the pin comment down below now starting with my absolute worst on this list belongs in double hell I'm going to put Carmela and zesti together Carmela quickly became a fan favorite character but I honestly had a little trouble understanding or appreciating her I felt like Carmela was introduced similarly to one of these seven princes in hell of a boss which is usually epic and dramatic but with Carmela we had very little context meeting a sin comes with a history of assuming they are evil and the reveal that they are a complex person who has simply been born into a position of power is very interesting but Carmela didn't have that same kind of hype since overlords are generally Sinners we already knew that there could be more Nuance to her character than just being evil but she and zesti were introduced a little too friendly for me to really understand they immediately start singing with each other in overtly emotional ways carmilla saying no one should disrespect zesti and zal trying to be an encouraging friend to Carmela when it's revealed that she killed The Exorcist these moments just feel like they would have landed better if we really knew what zesti does as an Overlord and there was just a little bit more of an ominous buildup to them right now they actually seem like two of the nicest and softest people in all of hell and while nice people can become overlords perhaps even through mostly positive means it just didn't have the same effect as introducing one of the Seven Sins or even other characters in hasbin hotel that we'll be talking about later next up on my list moving to the forgettable rank we have Adam Adam was not present in the pilot where most of the main cast was introduced and a lot of overlords and such at least had shadowy appearances in the background and with little scenes here and there Adam instead was introduced as the primary obstacle to Charlie's Grand plans in episode one of the Amazon series I actually find him really fun overall though some of the jokes are a little too flat and on the nose some people think that he was essentially meant to be forgettable an Expendable character meant to be killed off fast in order to set up the plot for the much more interesting character of luk but more on her later at the end of the day Adam may come back and if he does he might become a lot more interesting depending on what they do with him but for now he seems like he played his part as a sometimes funny obstacle and I find that I don't really miss him despite my theories of him potentially returning as a sinner next up is Cherry Bomb Cherry Bomb was a character I was extremely excited for after the pilot and especially after the addict music video where she was shown to have a more emotional side and potentially a dark backstory on the surface she was a fun character She's Not Just Angel's best friend but she's constantly in turf wars in attempts to become an Overlord as well as per the addict music video she also helps Angel when he is in his really dark places comforting him when he's having a breakdown and generally being a really good friend in the actual Amazon series however she is portrayed quite a bit differently she's not some sort of fun bad influence but someone who legitimately is pressuring Angel into doing more and more for no real reason instead of comforting Angel like we see in the addict music video with Angel crying in his bed Cherry dismisses Angel's problems and tries to get him to stop talking about them so she can enjoy her party atmosphere some more and get him to indulge in more Vice this seemed like the opposite of what had been set up from the previous works and ultimately that is fine I Believe by the end of the show Cherry Bomb will probably be one of my favorite characters again she just needs time to have her story explored now that it has properly been set up until then however season 1 made her seem like someone who is just forgettable instead of someone you're really hyped to learn more about but once we get that backstory I'm sure I'll love her again next up is husk who like Cherry Bomb I had more interest in based on his appearance in the pilot the voice cast switch up from the pilot to the show was pretty solid in my opinion I loved Michael kovet but Blake Roman was able to handle the series as a musical quite well and most of the cast felt similar enough to their original voices even outside of Angel but husk was a bit of an exception here and that's okay especially when again you consider that this is a musical series and that husk Gruff voice from the pilot probably wasn't going to sound right for moments like the big duet of loser baby but the pilot voice just worked for me and added a sort of authentic roughness to husk character that informed every little moment that he was on screen what I particularly liked was how he would push Angel away but still get read at the end of the pilot when Angel flirts with him yet again it felt a lot more nuanced than what we got on the show which kept the idea of pushing Angel away until suddenly he drops all of this to play as Angel's new BFF and when he isn't playing that role I honestly forget he's an independent member of the story next up is my mid tier where we first have Vox I know I'm I know everyone loves him and I actually do too he's just not that important to the story in season 1 and that's still okay I know I keep saying this for low-ranked characters so far but it's true these characters especially Vox are characters with bigger plans for the future with season 2 and onward probably being not just more about Vox but more insane because of that extra focus on him the overlords thus far have been rather United Alistair and Rosie are Pals they go to meetings with and zesti who also happen to be besties and they hold a big old business meetings where overlords all chill together except for the three V's who I will be essentially looping together here with Vox for the record sorry guys but if you want a bigger breakdown request an overlords ranking video in the comments and I'll try to do that before murder drones Madness begins but for now I just mean to say that he and the other V's will probably make season 2 and three a lot more interesting with how they interact to the other overlords who they are essentially oppos to next up is Charlie herself Charlie is the main character not forgettable but a bit mid to me so far in terms of her exploration the show has so much to set up in season 1 that outside of the pilot Charlie mostly became a machine built to move the plot forward she's fun she's cool I'll enjoy her next season as well but probably not as much as the next character on this list Emily now it's no mistake that I put Emily and Charlie together on this list because I think what is going to make the two of them more interesting overall is how they interact with each other at the end of the day Emily and Charlie are more similar than they first appear and the differences they have seem to stem more so from where they actually reside according to the series writer Adam nen the form a character has changes based on where they are assigned to live even angels like Lucifer while Lucifer can look like a s off angel with his six wings even in hell he has a noticeably different color palette than Sarah or Emily and of course instead of just growing more eyes like Sarah Lucifer's fight mode if you will is clearly more demonic because he has fallen as Sarah calls it Charlie living in hell looks more like her father having horns that come out when she fights but if she was able to actually live in heaven she would probably look almost exactly like Emily in terms of color and such they also have very similar personalities and when singing side by side we can see their key differences are just visual where they are assigned to live showing that in heaven or hell you can have a pure entity just like Charlie it was by putting these two characters side by side that we saw that the Heaven and Hell systems are flawed that good people end up in both places and yet the ones in hell are punished suffer and then end up dead through extermination season 2 will undoubtedly deepen their Dynamic and I can't wait to see how that plays out but for season 1 the characters were just kind of mid for me next are characters I find just good for which I would begin with Nifty I know it probably seems weird to have her outranked Charlie especially since she gets virtually no focus in season 1 but she is the perfect background character in my opinion Nifty undoubtedly has some sort of crazy backstory explaining why she is so sadistic and messed up but for season 1 she was able to play her part as an Ecentric hotel guest quite perfectly she was great for jokes while everyone else is being serious and she was also an amazing little troublemaker that angel had to look after when they all went out to the club at the end of the day it doesn't matter what they do with Nifty in season 2 because she's already the best version of herself in my opinion next for me we have the king of Hell himself Lucifer now I had been theorizing for a while now that Lucifer would actually be evil in our older videos but I had known for quite some time before thanks to the leaks that Lucifer meant well when he gave Humanity the fruit of knowledge because of that I wasn't disappointed by his portrayal in the show and he actually got more development and screen time in season 1 than I initially expected as I imagin the show to be saving Lucifer for season 2 at the end of the day Lucifer is most interesting to me because of his place in the lore I actually like the opening story book narration to episode one where we see his Origins a lot more than his actual appearance in episode 5 what I did love in that episode were the hints of history in his room where we can see photos of him with a demon that he had become friends with as well as the little scene where we see Charlie as a child and this interesting little duck becoming a six-winged looking Phoenix there's this big question mark over Lucifer's ultimate purpose in the story and it's these little details that allude to what he is ultimately up to that I find the most interesting about his character season 1 did a good job of setting him up and I'm really curious to see what they do with him in season 2 and three as he will undoubtedly have the most epic backstory when we start to fill in the gaps next up is Alo who I found far more interesting than Adam or even Lucifer overall L immediately had context to her character as a sidekicked Adam she is someone who follows orders but every action she takes also speaks of her relationship with Adam who she seemed to refer to as Daddy in episode 1 she clearly looks up to him and his death is devastating to her at the end of season 1 which as I said before really only seem to set her up to be an even more interesting character in Season 2 Season 1 was already laced with little moments where we see her supporting Adam yet having her own ideas of how things ought to be and to end the season with her giving an order to Lila herself to go down to Hell and stop the hasbin hotel elevated her to such an interesting level before season 2 even Begins the next character up on the good tier is vaggie vaggie has always been an interesting character and one who has been redrafted more than any other from her original form in the zoobia comic strips the reveal that she is an angel right in the middle of season 1 was pretty climactic even for those of us who had been theorizing about it for years at this point it wasn't about the twist or the Fallout but just how well done it was cinematically having vaggie get absolutely wrecked by Adam and Lou after having shown Mercy to a child was so satisfying adding a moment that was more dramatic than the reveal itself one question this raises is just how much of her story is left to explore however though there are some questions left about her identity in terms of whether or not she was born on Earth first and then became an angel or if she was made by Adam as he seems to indicate but despite that she feels like the one character who had their big big surprise thrown out in season 1 and that's kind of a good thing while most of the other characters are set to glow up in seasons 2 and Beyond vaggie's reveal was something that could satisfy us until then really stealing the show so to speak for season 1 next up is Sur penious this was a character from The Pilot who I initially really hated I was happy when I had heard that he wasn't intended to recur and then extremely disappointed when I heard that Vivy poop liked him so much that he would become a bit of a regular I would actually say that he's one of my favorite characters in terms of just goofing around now and being funny across the entire season particularly once they go to the club and he's buying everyone's shots and nervously trying to flirt with cherry bomb the fact that he became an angel was cool don't get me wrong but Sur penious is just an example of how good writing can win you over on a character that you didn't know you wanted to like and the potential he has for humor in heaven is going to be hilarious while allowing Angel to perhaps get more of Charlie's focus in season to at the actual hotel next up first in my Great Character category is Rosie who is hard not to love and unlike carmilla her lifestyle has a lot of dark energy to it she eats people probably innocent people probably unsuspecting victims even and she enjoys it but she's also extremely empathetic and that empathy is what allows her to play matchmaker allowing her to feel the problems of the people she connects with in order to find solutions for them she feels a lot more like these seven sins in hell of a boss in that she had a bit of a thorough introduction simply through implication which made for her more easygoing Persona to be seen as endearing not that zestral isn't endearing either but I still don't actually know what he is the overlord of other than making random people on the streets go crazy while this is a cool setup for his character it doesn't really make him established enough that being a good guy is now suddenly interesting without having a real introduction being an important figure in a cannibal Colony just has so much weight to it and then being all Pleasant and nice becomes this great surprise as you start to see how she compartmentalizes those different parts of herself without the more explicit Darkness for Carmela or zes it is hard to appreciate why they are such positive figures in a hellish world next up in the great category is Sarah who is sort of the inverse of the deadly sins and Rosie Sarah comes with the backstory of being the creator of humans and the head Sara in heaven the sins are judged by bad guys standard wherein because they are evil we enjoy them being portrayed as good even if we can see that beyond the nice presentation they have they are still creating a toxic and oppressive system to suit their needs Sarah on the other hand is judged by good guy standards she is the highest embodiment of the supposed good outside of the spirit of good itself that the angels are said to worship every little thing she does wrong is examined to an extreme degree because it is where she is wrong or even outright bad that she becomes more interested in and layered the way it clashes with what her ideas of good are and how trying to maintain those ideas pushes her to Dark Places with very little introduction but very overt signals we are immediately able to see Nuance in the character of Sarah and that's why she is on the list of great characters but not greater than the final entry in this tier Lilith Lilith really only appeared for a moment at the end of the season with everything else being a reference or story or memory instead of a legit interaction with her but screw you she's just great before we even get to know her there was just so much context how she ran away from Adam how she married Lucifer how she then became a sort of celebrity in Hell divorced her husband and then disappeared on her child despite Heaven being the literal only other place she could potentially go the reveal that she had been hiding out there all season was absolutely shocking it set the stage for one of the most epic characters in the show without her having said a single word yet but some shaping the entirety of the narrative with all her different choices made over thousands of years Lilith is the ultimate puzzle to solve every little detail we get of her in season 2 is going to be so interesting and I can't wait to see how that goes down finally for my absolute favorite characters we have the great tier the first is Alistair I don't really need to give a reason and it's kind of shameful for you to expect one he's just really cool but seriously if I had to give any reason Beyond him just being incredibly complex and fun from the moment he is introduced to the very end of the season I would have to say the absolute best moment is just his little song near the end of the finale where we can see him struggling to maintain his smile alistair's whole bit is that he always smiles and he's been hinting that he is really suffering and in great personal pain behind that smile his smile is his shield his way to maintain his composure and to keep other people guessing at what he is doing if he can smile through any pain possible he can play along just long enough to find a way to escape his pain without the other people catching on to what he is doing or stopping him from escaping having him nearly lose that smile and then pop up at the end with it just took a character that was already so great and showed just how far they could push him before resetting the scale for season 2 finally my absolute favorite character has always been angel dust it's actually because of Angel himself that I got into the show when I first saw the pilot I had enjoyed it but it was sort of foreign to me I was still pretty new to reviewing cartoons and honestly to watching American cartoons as a whole as I hadn't watched a lot of Western animation up until that point what was beginning to draw me into the sort of Western cartoon culture we have now was the sudden appearance of complex and emotionally resonant stories such as with Steven Universe and eventually haspen Hotel I had grown up liking anime because of how much more serious it would be compared to most of the western cartoons around but shows like Steven universe and hasbin hotel and such began to introduce much more serious and dramatic elements without trying to copy the style or tone of anime as is often the case when Western animation does get more serious I remember liking the hasb been Hotel pilot enough to watch it twice but still not quite feeling that sort of fandom immersion you get when something resonates with you you sort of begin to think about the greater aspects of the story and the world that moment came to me when I saw the addict music video like the pilot I found the majority of the music video to be just interesting but it was the reprise at the end that really captured my attention the moment where Angel begins to sing in his much more sad tone with the little piano notes replacing the Techno took this very Bugs Bunny archetype and made them this tragic outcome of a complex and uncaring world it was emblematic of why I was beginning to love Western animation as a whole captured in such a short moment because of Western animation's potential to exploit the more silly and real formulas and tones it has by juxtaposing them against very real and serious moments that all resonate with us this is the kind of Storytelling that I feel elevated western style animation to the best medium genre and tone to tell most of the stories that I enjoy the flexibility of the characters allows for so many different styles to tell these stories the comedic aspects allow for you to brush over the things that liveaction shows have to spend entire episodes slowly explo exploring in order for the audience to take seriously and then after building you up with laughs and more fun cartoony atmosphere they punch you in the gut with some intense feelings and the comedy just makes it hurt even more in that very good way and Angel's character carried that over into the show perfectly with his focal episode and his song Poison just like adct this took a character who had been nothing but punch lines and then gave him an increasingly tense music sequence that ends with the promise that at some point angel will end up dead from this poison this musical sequence really captured the promise of the premise of the show the one that was reiterated in addict and which I think was really one of the best songs in the entire season but to see what my absolute favorite song is you'll have to go check out that video over on random Universe where I rank the songs from season 1 or check out the animation of mcut hanging off of the cliff see you guys [Music] there [Music] [Music] my
