Southern Pacific Railroad is now docked off of North Harbor Drive in San Diego Bay and boasts the title of being the first propeller-driven ferry on the west coast when it first launched it was the largest commuter ferry in the entirety of the United States Berkeley ferryboat was originally constructed in 1898 by Union ironworks of San Francisco she began service the very same year ferrying many across the bay on October 3rd of 1900 the ferry boat was involved in a collision with a coastal passenger liner due to a mix-up in signals the ferry was quickly repaired however and would later serve in assisting refugees of the 1906 earthquake in crossing the bay into Oakland in 1958 she was set aside for repairs but was never returned to service as Southern Pacific closed their ferry lines later that same year the ferry boat was purchased and briefly owned by the Golden Gate fishing company who intended to run her as a whaling processing facility but they never got the chance the old ferry was eventually purchased by Bill Conover who docked her in Sausalito and converted her into a small shop called trade fair in 1973 she was sold once again to the Maritime Museum of San Diego who had her towed to San Diego Bay there countless hours were spent in restoration the berkeley ferryboat now serves as the main building if you will at the Maritime Museum of San Diego over the years a number of visitors to the trade fair workmen and now museum goers have reported a wide range of happenings that have led many to speculate the old ferryboat maybe holding more than just relics of the past a number of these reports entailed disembodied voices from empty corridors shadowy figures caught slinking about between sections and doors as well as various hatches opening and slamming shut on their own most who set foot on the ferryboat report immediately feeling unwanted a feeling they often find hard to shake and a number of staff members report literally having to deal with this feeling every day just to get through their jobs describing it as downright distracting even oppressive at times also reported on the ferryboat or objects moving on their own sometimes within lock display cases and empty bathroom stalls consistently locking themselves many of these eerie happenings are speculated to be the work of an entity seen often across the Berkeley the ghost of a man described as donning a long old-timey jacket and fedora this strange Specter is often cited in areas guests are not supposed to be in and on several occasions when confronted by staff he promptly vanishes into nothingness in recent times some of theorize this may be the ghost of one John own or b'm a man who died in an explosion on board in 1911 after a small combustible in his pocket was ignited number four the old point loma lighthouse the old point loma lighthouse is a historic lighthouse turned Museum located within the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma Peninsula right at the mouth of the San Diego Bay this location was originally chosen for a lighthouse in 1851 with construction starting just three years later in 1854 the project was completed in just over a year the light lit for the first time in 1855 the Point Loma white house also played home to the keepers as well as various staff members over the years eventually an additional small building was constructed for storage after its ignition and initial opening the lighthouse boasted the reputation as the light with the highest elevation in the entirety of the United States in 1875 the additional storage building was fully remodeled and converted into an apartment for the assistant lighthouse keeper over time however the feat it boasted its impressive elevation action became its potential downfall as it was often quite literally obscured by the cloud level in 1891 the light was extinguished the new point loma lighthouse constructed to take its place in its current location in 1941 at the break of World War two the lighthouse was painted in camouflage green to keep it hidden from potential enemy threats through the 1980s however its appearance was reverted and the lighthouse was refurbished entirely to more accurately reflect as 1880s appearance the light is now open to the public as both a monument and museum though it's uncertain why or by whom over its existence a number of reports of strange occurrences have led many to conclude the old point loma lighthouse is in fact quite haunted these occurrences include reports of disembodied voices from empty sections or across the grounds extreme cold spots in the middle of summer and strange electronic malfunctions such as phones and cameras instantly dying many report hearing the sounds of heavy boot steps in the upper rooms and near the stairs the feeling of someone unseen rushing past is common eerie shadowy entities have been spotted sulking about and a number of witnesses report sighting a strange misty apparition that sometimes appears through walls are in reflections startling any nearby also reported from the light connected building and surrounding grounds or disturbing moaning sounds as well as strange orb like light seen in the sky over the coastline lastly and most infamously the full-bodied apparition of a man in positively ancient garb has been sighted mainly after dark through the area as well as captured in the backgrounds of several photographs and video some local legends tell that this is the spirit of juan Rodriguez Cabrillo the first European to explore the Californian coast while others claim it's simply the spirit of a former Lake keeper we may never know for certain however as those who attempt to approach him are always greeted with a quick glance and a stern look before he fades away into the night number three the Davis Horton house the Davis Horton house formerly the William Heath Davis house is located in the Gaslamp District of San Diego and boasts the astounding reputa of being the oldest standing structure in the downtown area William Heath Davis the man and legend traveled to San Diego yearning for a new settlement near the positively gorgeous Bay Area in 1850 he ordered pre-built homes from Portland Maine which were promptly shipped in the Davis Horton house itself was among these very homes this modern settlement of sorts became known as new town San Diego surprisingly enough that Davis Horton house was actually in a different location at the time sadly William never actually lived in the abode and his claim on the area never really became popular by 1853 most of the shipped homes had either been moved to old town or literally dismantled for firewood we're guessing times were pretty hard the Davis Horton house however survived the purge and went on to act for a time as a military barracks in 1867 Alonzo Horton moved into the old home with his wife albeit temporarily just until their custom home was finished Alonzo actually instigated was now considered one of the largest and most influential mass moving parties to the area and is actually now credited with being the father of new town San Diego in 1873 the home was moved to a new location and it was purchased by Anna shepper shepper repurposed the old structure as a hospital eventually through the 1930s the Davis Horton house found its way into the hands of one George Deyo Deyo treasured the home through his life eventually leaving it to the lanuza family in 1977 the family not needing another property but understanding its value did what would ultimately result in its indefinite preservation they donated the old home to the city in 1984 the city moved the house one last time to its current location where it underwent extensive renovations modernisations and additions such as you know electricity good for them the property was slowly transformed into the Gaslamp museum hosted at the Davis Horton house and was used to showcase the history of the home its various owners the city and gave any curious a glimpse at how life had evolved throughout the area over the past century or two not surprisingly with such a history came men stories of the supernatural and over the years a number of local legends suggest that the old premesis was haunted by former residents as well as a number of souls who were lost within during its time as a hospital the full-bodied apparition of an unknown woman in Victorian era clothing has been sighted all throughout the house as well as some of the surrounding area she's been known to appear randomly mainly for staff members startling any nearby before vanishing into thin air even in its earliest days a number of stories told of both candles and oil lanterns extinguishing or igniting on their own throughout the home this paranormal tradition has continued into modern times with visitors and workmen commonly reporting lights and flashlights turning on and off by themselves the full-bodied entities of a couple consisting of a man clad in a suit and a woman donning a beautiful white evening gown had been sighted on the top of the main staircase and the spirit of a little girl named Lillian has been encountered wandering the house often always darting just out of sight shortly after discovery also reported throughout the old home are strange scratching and tapping sounds disembodied voices and moans thought to be former patients still hanging around in the curious sounds of a cat meowing or scampering about even though there are no fee liens on the property orbs have been captured in the backgrounds of photographs and videos sometimes zipping around rooms violently ghostly children have been caught playing in the kitchen and strange mists have been sighted darting about with seeming cognition many visitors report finding disturbing EVPs in video and audio captured within the home in a number of accounts detail the witnessing of objects moving on their own even floating through the air lastly the spirit of a woman dubbed mrs. mountain is said to haunt the children's room as local legend has it she lost her children in life leaving her soul Restless her entity is said to be friendly and on several occasions has even led lost children back to their worried parents to go to thank the mysterious woman only to find she's disappeared number 2 the cemetery of El Campo Santo the cemetery of El Campo Santo or Holyfield Cemetery is a graveyard located just off of San Diego Avenue in Old Town that boasts the reputation of San Diego's second oldest boneyard it was originally established in 18-49 as a Catholic cemetery through 1880 and by what records were found at least 477 bodies were laid to rest there in 1889 several headstones were removed and a horse-drawn streetcar line was installed through the middle of the cemetery sounds like a great idea in 1933 the cemetery had begun to show its age and was described as run-down crumbling fortunately the San Diego Historical Society intervened restoring much of its original aesthetic disturbingly and possibly due to budget issues locals to the area reported that during the renovation the new walls were set nearly 20 feet from where they had originally been leaving a number of bodies buried outside of the official graveyard unmarked unremembered we're not judging but based on the scary stories emerging from here we see a couple of errors that probably could have been avoided in 1942 the old streetcar line was paved over to complete San Diego Avenue while also covering about 20 graves this just keeps getting better and better in 1993 after over a century of abuse and neglect the locations of lost bodies were marked by small metal discs stating simply gravesite today the entire area is open to the public almost not surprisingly both historic and haunted tours of the cemetery are available and what you ask might one expect to encounter should they take one of these tours or even go it solo according to reports a host of haunting activity including phones and cameras going dead instantly car alarms going off for no reason and when no one else is around and even vehicles of those simply passing by dying right in front of the gates many who live or work near the graveyard report lights within buildings flickering almost consistently with no known cause as well as the feeling of being consistently and closely watched by an unseen presence the spirit of the infamous Jim Robinson who in 1852 was hanged nearby then buried within the cemetery has been sited across the grounds sometimes pale with rope marks around his neck also reported throughout the yard or extreme cold spots orbs cotton photographs and strange lights seen floating in the skies above on several shocking occasions those brave enough to enter the cemetery after dark report sighting glowing apparitions literally gliding from graves and into the open night air some missing the upper or lower halves of their bodies several passerby Asst have reported being approached by these entities even charged at only to watch them vanish at the moment of would-be impact shadowy figures are commonly seen prowling about strange malformed shapes are caught in the backgrounds of photographs and video and a number of reports detail those disrespecting the cemetery getting scratched by invisible claws disturbingly it doesn't stop there additional reports suggest the cemetery may play home to a number of cryptids demonic entities and other paranormal manifestations these accounts tell of encounters with everything from what some would describe as skinwalkers to a mysterious woman in white seem nightly floating towards the south wall before slowly fading away lastly the spirit of a Native American man dressed in early 19th century garb is often cited through the graveyard sitting high on stones or floating several feet from the ground usually gazing off towards the sunset or sunrise those who have encountered him claim he doesn't seem to notice the living and disappears quickly when approached number one the Whaley House the Whaley House or Whaley House Museum is a historic home turned Museum located in the heart of Old Town San Diego that boasts the reputation of the oldest two-story brick building in the entirety of the city and if we're being honest really needs no introduction in the world of paranormal investigation to kick off this absolutely classic haunted houses history it was set to be built on the grounds that previously acted as the city's gallows Construction lasted from 1853 to 1857 with the initial print including a granary a small store and of the home itself the Whaley House was built for none other than Thomas Whaley his wife Anna and their children in 1858 just months after the death of their infant son a fire destroyed the shop portion of the home the family devastated left to San Francisco but not before putting large-scale renovation plans in motion they were able to move back just a decade later in 1868 that same year the upper portion of the home was turned into San Diego's first commercial theater and it hosted local groups for a short time through the 1860s and into the 70s the city of San Diego actually rented a portion of the old home out and used it as a court room in 1882 violet Thomas's daughter married her second cousin the engagement was short-lived however as he left abruptly in the middle of their honeymoon he would go on to confess he never truly intended on staying with her it said that violet fell into a deep depression to further her State Society of the time shunned her in 1885 after years of torment and at only twenty-two years old she was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the tragedy and after much scrutiny Thomas and the remainder of his family were forced to move they used their resources to quickly construct a home downtown and upon its completion the old Whaley House was left abandoned later in 1890 Thomas would die in the new house in 1909 Frances Whaley son of Thomas decided to return to his old family abode it said that he fell in love with the place all over again and began meticulously restoring it later transforming it into a tourist attraction Frances and his siblings George and Corinne Lillian along with their mother Anna all moved back into the classic house in 1912 a year later in 1913 Anna passed away a year after that in 1914 Frances also passed on these deaths in quick succession bred too many rumors of some form of family curse or possibly something evil surrounding the house itself George would pass away later in 1928 while Corinne Lillian would seemingly dodge all supernatural succumbing --zz and died much later peacefully in nineteen 53 in 1960 the home was open to the public as a museum it's acted as such ever since giving the multitudes interested a chance to glimpse the family's history the houses past and better understand the development of key aspects of the city of San Diego itself if you're interested in checking out this dark DeMint's you're in luck as a number of tours of both the historic and fact that the Whaley House has been featured in a number of television programs formal and informal paranormal investigations magazine articles books blogs and more to further this notoriety it's widely accepted in many circles as one of if not the most haunted house in the entirety of the United States if not North America in our professional opinions we think it may be tied with a couple of others but this is still a pretty impressive feat activity on the property includes the sounds of babies crying from empty rooms disembodied voices and the strong smell of old-timey perfume on numerous occasions staff and visitors report hearing what sounds like large parties glasses clinking music the whole shebang as if some variant of life is happening just beyond the veil out of sight one of the most commonly reported apparitions within the Whaley House is said to be that of Mary Ann Reynolds great-granddaughter of Thomas and Anna Marion passed away elsewhere but it's said she spent a great deal of time on the property and loved it also reported across the premises for the sounds of children's footsteps giggling and even small apparitions seen in the peripheral always darting just out of sight into empty rooms or around corners not all of the spirits here are said to be harmless however and a number of more disturbing tales tell of restless spirits of those who were hung on the grounds before the house ever existed many cite these spirits dangling sometimes flailing from various beams inside gasping for air reaching for shocked onlookers for only moments before vanishing into nothingness mentioned earlier the spirit of Yankee Jim Robinson has been cited throughout the home on numerous occasions many also reporting hearing his heavy boot steps this Specter is perhaps the home's oldest apparition and several journal entries from Thomas himself suggests he may have been appearing since it was first constructed old Jim met his fate at the end of a rope can you guess where also reported through the old home our shadowy apparitions slinking about extreme cold spots and doors and windows opening and closing on their own lights commonly shut off on those and enclosed rooms leaving them in total darkness and orbs followed by strange mists are often captured into backgrounds of photographs several full-bodied apparitions those of a younger man a younger girl and an elderly woman have also been sighted throughout the Whaley House but their identities remain up for speculation some claiming their family members others that their various guests from the property's history a ghostly dog has been heard from distance as well as sighted darting across the grounds and it's thought this spooky canine may have either belonged to soldiers in the area long before the houses construction or possibly to the houses original owners themselves the ghosts of violet Whaley has been cited on numerous occasions on the second floor while the spirit of a small girl is often seen in the kitchen some claim these ghosts are both violet manifesting is different ages from different points in her life last but certainly not least the spirits of none other
