from spooky old hotels whose halls hold the ghosts of the victims of mob hits two ghost towns where life seemingly continues far beyond the grave ancient burial grounds unimaginable monsters and even sinister talking animals lurk in the darkest corners of the Centennial state which is why the speakeasy is bringing you our second list of the most haunted places in Colorado starting with number 10 creek creek inn teller county wasn't much in its earlier days at an elevation of over 9,000 feet about the only thing that this valley was good for was grazing during the summer common trade in the area was prospecting and mining and many avoided the valley because of an incident called the Mount Pisgah hoax in which a rush to the area was created to throw competitors off by salting or sprinkling plain Rock with gold in 1890 a prospector by the name of Bob Womack discovered a rare and rich or starting a whole new rush to the area and in a short matter of time the independence ioad was discovered as one of the largest gold veins ever recorded the town's population skyrocketed to just over 10,000 people by 1893 and over 500 million in gold was retrieved in April of 1896 a fire broke out destroying half of the city including most of the business district just four days later another fire broke out and destroyed most of the remaining half the entire city was rebuilt quickly within months when everything was said and done tragically Womack died in 1909 without a single dime to show for his stellar discovery throughout the years those brave enough to explore the remnants of this area and surrounding shops and businesses especially at night report a host of terrifying hauntings hotel st. Nicholas was originally built as a hospital during the rush and many report the apparitions of a miner a ghost who smells terrible and a little boy named Pete the jail Museum acted as the county jail for 90 years and many report high EMF levels EVPs and disembodied laughter from the old solitary confinement room the Colorado Graham Casino and hotel shares its space with Maggie's restaurant and many report the ghostly apparition of Maggie herself accompanied by the sounds of old music disembodied voices and orders shouted from nowhere to waiters or waitresses long deceased number nine carter lake carter lake in Larimer County is a reservoir that stores one hundred and twelve thousand two hundred and thirty acre feet of water and was completed in 1952 after the construction of the Carter Lake Dam in 1950 the earthen dam boasts a ridiculous size measuring in at a height of 214 feet and a length of over 1,200 feet at its crest its massive size contributes to a shoreline of over eight miles Carter Lake is frequented by hikers campers and nature enthusiasts of all kinds and though it's the perfect spot to reel in record-breaking trout crappie and even occasionally sunfish you might want to vacate the area before the Sun Goes Down throughout the years many local legends and creepy tales have sprouted up from the lake and surrounding forests with many reporting strange cold spots areas where the forest is completely silent even dead and a feeling that someone or something is following one through the darkness the most famous local legend - sprout up from Carter Lake is that of a man by the name of old mr. Bennett as the story goes old mr. Bennett lived near the lake enjoying his privacy and the serenity of nature eventually others caught wind of the picture-perfect retreat and begin moving in and setting up houses around him on one fateful day Bennett got into a dispute with a neighbor and after things got violent he was shot and killed his spirit is said to remain restless wandering a road sharing his name Bennett Road and those brave enough to walk this dark stretch often report seeing the ghost of old mr. Bennett carrying a strange bag and while some claimed that he spooks easily vanishing if approached there are others who claim he appears as a modelled and rotting skeleton chasing any he encounters also reported hear strange singing voices across the lake orbs that float above the water before died with a splash and a disturbing sensation of a cold ghostly hand briefly grasping one's ankle from under the water number eight the Brown Palace Hotel the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver was originally built entirely of sandstone and red granite in 1892 Henry C Brown who homesteaded most of the Capitol Hill area was the original owner and the man after which the hotel was named it was designed by famous architect Frank ed Brooke and it is considered by many to be some of his finest work the lobby is still graced by two pieces of art as historically significant as they are astounding the works stagecoach and airplane travel both by Allen Tupper true are exquisite examples of art from the 30s one of America's most glamorous and also bloodiest eras throughout the years it's seen the likes of many notable guests including the Unsinkable Molly Brown of the Titanic Queen Marie of Romania The Beatles William Taft Warren Harding harry s truman Dwight D Eisenhower Ronald Reagan Bill Clinton and many more it's also built quite the reputation for its wide and often terrifying range of paranormal occurrences staff guests and visitors to this historic old haunt report lights and faucets turning on and off on their own disembodied footsteps knocking and scratching sounds coming from the walls and the phantom smell of cigar smoke in 1911 a man by the name of Frank henwood shot and killed a rival Sylvester Lewis Tony von phul accidentally hitting George Copeland an innocent bystander at the bar in the process it said that all three apparitions have been sighted here playing out their final moments leading up to the shooting and many have even claimed to chat with George thinking him just another bar goer until he vanishes into thin air the spirit of Denver socialite mrs. Louise Crawford Hill who lived in room 904 from 1940 to 1955 has also been seen on numerous occasions in the room even waking startled guests by slowly pulling the sheets from their bed she's been known to call employees using the switchboard as well also reported here ghostly children throughout the hall a spectral hotel waiter in the elevator and even an otherworldly string quartet that has played old timey Tunes for staff and guests number seven Helen Hunt falls Helen Hunt falls in Colorado Springs was named in honor of Helen Maria hunt Jackson a poet and writer who later became an activist for the better treatment of Native Americans by the government the Falls are located along Sheyenne Creek in North Cheyenne Canyon Park and are the perfect place to dip your feet in the summer the park is consistently packed and for good reason just make sure you get out of there before sunset in recent years Helen Hunt Falls has become notorious among locals for some pretty spooky happenings activities said to get strongest at night with many reporting extreme cold spots a strange fog that descends just around the Falls and disturbingly in human sounding disembodied voices what is believed to be the ghost of Helen herself has been cited on numerous occasions as a woman in white her appearance has encouraged a local version of the story in which Helen actually died at the Falls this is false however and death records show she passed away in California from stomach cancer at the age of 55 regardless it's a well-known fact that the seemingly simple and serene trails surrounding the Falls are deceptively treacherous with at least one person dying there nearly every year and it said that the souls of more than a few of the victims claimed by these dastardly descents are still hanging around with many also reporting various apparitions in clothing from many different eras wandering the area with a lost or confused look on their face on several occasions hikers have even claimed to stop and chat with said apparitions for periods of time before walking away and turning around to realize they've vanished lastly and most disturbingly many report to shapes of bodies falling from the cliff side and even gruesome thuds as they hit the ground with a handful of witnesses even calling the authorities who have arrived to find of course nothing their numbers 6 st. Elmo st. Elmo in Chafee County was originally named Forest City but underwent a name change when the council discovered the name was shared with many many budding towns of the era st. Elmo was chosen by Griffith Evans a founding father who chose the name based on the book he was reading at the time at one point the town had so much as multiple saloons five hotels a town hall and even more with several main railroad lines running straight through it like many Colorado towns of its day its main economy was mining and prospecting with most of the population employed at one of the many operations in the area while not as big as some of the other mines we've covered a mine by the name of the Mary Murphy mine took over and pulled a respectable 60 million in gold all other mines eventually fell into decline and shut down and when the railroad finally closed down itself the Mary Murphy went with it the town population also began to dwindle and though a handful stayed in the area the town was officially considered abandoned in 1952 after the death of the long-standing postmaster in 2002 the Town Hall burned to the ground along with several of the other buildings but reconstruction started shortly after in an attempt to fully restore the hall to its original state now this ghost town plays home to tourism and all manner of auto sports namely dirt biking and for wheeling with the general store even opening for the summers for a ghost town it certainly is lively but that's not to say it doesn't have its own skeletons in its closets throughout the years many have reported spooky happenings in and around these aged structures in the st. Elmo hotel staff and guests report light switches flicking off and on by themselves extreme cold spots and furniture heard and found moved across entire rooms in the general store many especially late at night report the unmistakable sound of disembodied boot steps making their way slowly across the floor also reported here ghostly figures throughout the streets the sound of old saloon music and on several occasions lights and figures suddenly popping up in the old windows of all the dormant buildings as if the town was suddenly springing back to life number five Georgetown Georgetown in Clear Creek County was officially founded in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush by George and David Griffith the griffiths were prospectors from Kentucky and the town named Georgetown was eventually settled on as George was the oldest brother in 1864 the town went through a growth spurt assured in by the discovery of silver veins and it formed into a sort of mecca for miners and prospectors in the area catering to thousands of new mines sprouting up all around Georgetown was officially incorporated On January 10th of 1868 and just a few months later Stoll county seat from Idaho Springs through the 1880s the town was booming with many considering life prosperous and almost enjoyable at one point the population hit a booming 10,000 but after the collapse of the silver boom it dwindled harshly in the 1950s skiers began to stop in Georgetown and it tasted the roots of success once again in the 1960s a historic museum was established in the former hotel and it began to pull in tourism where those interested could get a feel for what life was like in Georgetown from there on it slowly grew into the place we know today with such a long and turbulent history it's no wonder there's more than a few souls that still linger here with many visitors to the area nearby residents and shop staff reporting disturbing happenings in the troyius restaurant formerly cafe prague the ghost of a man by the name of sham lee is said to make frequent appearances as the local legend goes Shamli murdered the local butcher henry thede after he was brought to custody it was discovered he was also wanted for rape in a different County he was held in the jail for only one night before a posse of vigilantes broke him out of the jail and hung him his emaciated dirty and broken form has been sighted in the hotel in reflections and slinking about the surrounding streets in the museum staff and visitors report extreme cold spots to the point of seeing one's breath phantom tobacco smoke and the feeling that an unseen presence is always watching lastly in the Hamill house report ghostly lights strange dark figures and disembodied voices emanating through the night one documented occurrence tells of an independent actress who was upstairs practicing singing for her role when all of the sudden she saw a white Victorian era dress flit by an open doorway number four Victor Hotel Victor hotel in Victor was originally constructed in 1894 by brothers Frank and Harry woods shortly after construction the railroad came to town and the hotel accommodated all manner of guests in 1899 a fire burned most of the business district leveling the hotel and associated buildings reconstruction started the same year this time out of stone and brick with the new version being bigger and located on the desirable bank block in 1906 a small hospital was operated from the fourth floor and during the winter when the ground froze to solid four burials bodies were carted up the elevator to store on this floor as well as a sort of makeshift morgue for nearly fifty years the building catered to many different businesses which it housed on the first floor including photographers candy shops trinkets tops and even several bars over time the businesses slowly faded and in 1960 it was completely closed down it fell into a state of disrepair until 1991 when Victor hotel LLC purchased the old building and under the supervision of Marjoe deep and Emir restored and renovated the entire property the process took just under a year and it paid off with Victor hotel now sporting all modern accommodations well except for the fact that they still boast the original elevator which is now the oldest running elevator in Colorado as local legend goes much of the Paranormal Activity experienced here comes from that very elevator as well as the fourth floor where the bodies were stored and many who are staying on set fourth floor report disembodied voices throughout the halls footsteps and full-bodied apparitions that are very pale in old-timey clothing wandering about aimlessly these are believed to be the spirits of the displaced bodies confused and looking for their final resting places room 301 is another hot spot said to play host to a ghost named Eddie as the story goes Eddie died when he accidentally stepped into the elevator shaft before the elevator had arrived he can often be seen stepping into the elevator donning a sudden surprise look then tumbling right through the floor with a blood-curdling scream also reported here ghostly doctors and nurses hurrying around the halls attending patients that are long since dead number 3 Colorado State University Colorado State University in Fort Collins was established in 1870 and is the perfect school to attend if you're interested in both agriculture and the paranormal many of the buildings on campus have stood the test of time with most of them being constructed in the late 1800s or early 1900s throughout the years it's become very apparent that more than just agriculture is growing in the dark places of this spooky old school with students and faculty members reporting some pretty disturbing activity on campus Johnson Hall was built in 1936 it served as a headquarters for the Student Union and has an attached ballroom those brave enough to venture here especially after dark report cold spots shadowy figures and the disembodied voice of a woman singing the Student Service building was built in 1948 and many here report disembodied footsteps orbs and photographs doors opening and closing on their own chairs rocking by themselves and disembodied whispers from dark rooms in a man Hall which was built in 1922 disturbing reports have sprouted up detailing otherworldly giggling growling and footsteps sprinting around the atrium as local legend goes when Ammon Hall was still a recreation center a woman drowned here and many think the giggles and footsteps are her spirit forever searching for those who didn't help her in time Centennial Hall was built in 1950 and many who enter it report disembodied footsteps on the main staircase strange wisps of smoke or fog and a dark shadowy apparition that slinks about and what about Old Main sadly the original Old Main mysteriously burned to the ground in 1970 during a peace rally and though arson was suspected the reason was never truly discovered lastly all across campus students and faculty reports shadowy figures at night unexplainable bursts of wind and what looks like old lanterns floating through dark and closed down buildings on more than one occasion students have reported seeing other students who are wearing old fashioned clothing and have even claimed to converse with these students at great length before watching them disappear from existence number two Riverdale Road Riverdale Road stretches from Brighton to Thornton and appears at first glance like any other backcountry Road in the area the drive is really quite scenic with tall trees pale grass and winding canals bordering the roadway there are several ruined structures at distant points in an overpass ominously sitting midway on the drive the speakeasy has covered some places before that we describe are magnets for paranormal occurrences or hotspots from multiple hauntings over time but none quite compare to what we've heard read and researched about Riverdale Road with those brave enough to travel this dark drive reporting otherworldly fog seemingly descending only on the road black spectral dogs believed to be hellhounds and disturbing ghoul light creatures roaming the nearby fields on several occasions reports of more infamous beasts of surfaced and several have reported being chased or even attacked by the likes of the disturbing and mythical Windigo skinwalkers sasquatch-like creatures and even werewolves another local story tells that the road was built over a Native American burial site and that when it was disturbed spirits became Restless and took the form of half-human half-animal creatures that prey on any foolish enough to travel through the dark on foot another legend surrounding the road is that centuries of dark magic cursed the area and many report ghostly witches shrouded in black mists animals found on markers without heads and the smell of sulfur suddenly filling the air it's also said that a man who once lived off Riverdale Road became possessed by a demon and burned his house to the ground with his family still inside his spirit has appeared deranged and angry and has even been known to attack any who approached the old foundation one of the most famous occurrences on this insanely cursed road is reappearing small bloody handprints on the road signs as the story goes a little boy was walking to school along the road one day and was hit by a car and no matter how many times the signs are washed or even replaced the handprints eventually show back up along this hellish byway one can also find the hanging tree a tree rumored to have hanged many witches throughout the years and any who dare step foot near this tree or go under its branches claim to feel sick scared or even like they're dying on numerous occasions investigators have been sent running after dozens of spectral bodies appear hanging from its branches among other reports here are a ghostly jogger full standing and terrifying demonic creatures and strangely enough talking animals believed to be nature spirits awakened when the old burial ground was disturbed if you check out this creepy crossroad and run into a grave Fox who tries to talk to you it said that you were an extreme danger and should leave immediately it represents pure evil but if you run into a coyote it said that you're safe and that will watch over you number one Grand Lake Grand Lake in Grand County is a name shared by both the lake claiming the title for Colorado's largest natural body of water and its bordering small lake town established in 1881 the town of Grand Lake started as nothing more than outfitting and supply stop for mining settlements in the area it was officially incorporated in 1944 and sitting right at the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park it wasn't long before it became a desirable tourist getaway many local legends have sprouted up throughout the area both concerning the lake in the town itself including strange glowing orbs over the water almost every night shadowy apparitions that sneak around the edges of the lake an abnormal fog that descends around the entire area the rapids Lodge was built in 1915 and boasts over 30 different owners throughout the years it was used for a variety of purposes including gambling prostitution and illegal booze it's said that the ghost of a mischievious old woman haunts its halls playing small pranks on guests by turning lights on and off and moving personal possessions in locked rooms the Spyder house is another notorious stop in the area it was dubbed as such for its spider web-like design and was built by Warren Gregg for his wife Mary O'Brien Gregg and their five children in 1904 while Warren worked in his woodshop and their oldest boy was at dinner with the local judge Mary shot and killed the four children at home before turning the gun on herself Warren continued to live in the home for nearly three decades many exploring this historic abode are simply passing by report the disembodied sounds of family talking the apparitions of children playing across the grounds and the sounds of little giggles more terrifyingly others report the ear-splitting sound of four gunshots followed by a long pause and then a fifth many who near the Spider House report feeling a very dark very ominous sensation history also tells that a great battle between the otay and Cheyenne happened near Grand Lake and in a last-ditch effort to eat a scent their women and children across the lake in rafts for safety but a fierce storm started and many of the rafts capsized with many of the families drowning in the middle of the night another tale tells that the first white inhabitants that moved here were warned by natives that the land was haunted possibly even cursed and to this day especially on foggy nights it said that the spirits of the women and children lost the lake appear floating across the water and roaming the shores searching for their families as if this wasn't enough the very streets of Grand Lake are said to play home to some pretty odd occurrences with locals and visitors reporting shadowy apparitions that stalk Walker's at night strange winds that seem to wrap around and attack individuals and exceedingly high EMF levels throughout the entire area hikers nature enthusiasts and campers on the surrounding trails and dirt roads report some pretty frightening occurrences as well ranging from strange creatures that have chased and even attacked those wandering alone at night to sightings of full-fledge to UFOs and otherworldly flashes of light in the sky lastly and most disturbingly another local legend tells that the ghosts of old Mary O'Brien Greg still roams the streets and outskirts of town after bedtime looking for any children who were still out so she can take them to replace her own so if you find yourself staying in this haunted little hamlet and the Sun has already gone down it may be best to think about getting indoors with the overwhelming and truly horrifying nature of the haunting stemming from this eerie lakeside villa in the tragic and brutal
