This is probably the darkest Alice In Chains song.
It's about the great pain Layne went through. It's about Laynes dad who got Layne into drugs again because Layne wanted his support.
It's about how him trying to get clean but feeling hate and shame toward himself because of what he became.
When he stopped using he felt all the emotions heroin had suppressed. He could barely deal with the hate and shame so when he used again it was sustenance for Him.
As this happened people treated him bad which worsened the effect. He was a great person and the drugs thwarted his vision.
He went through some of the worst pain and his suffering went on so long.
Everyone should let this song be a warning to not do drugs and stray from them. Layne believed people could be good and doesnt want people to suffer as he did.
I have found in the past that even the smallest addictions which seem insignificant can bring you to ruin.
I always thought βDiedβ was their darkest. Singing about Demri dying and leaving him alone.
What about Frogs. Or Sludge factory those are both pretty dark, especially frogs it even sounds creepy af
This song is dark alright, but I think the darkest for me is "Frogs". It's incredibly painful to listen to, because it's so fucking beautiful but at the same time it gives me intense, nerve-wracking shivers. Especially the chorus and the spoken word(?) section. A lot of the self-titled album makes me feel so unnerved to be honest, there's something really biting about songs like "Sludge Factory", "Head Creeps", "Shame in You"... even the tracks Cantrell wrote are fucking unnerving as hell (the lyrics to "Grind"...)
"Died" is also fucking morbid, especially if you account for Layne's lack of teeth for the recording. I can never listen to it because it touches a nerve I don't want to elaborate on here. "Get Born Again", written around the same time, deserves a special mention too.
God damn though, I think the band's acoustic EPs deserve a lot more credit for their dark, bleak songs. I'm talking about "Rotten Apple", "Nutshell", "Don't Follow", "Am I Inside"... maybe those are more sad than dark?
As I said in a different comment on this thread though, I do agree with "Hate to Feel" being dark as fuck though, especially with the extra context you gave it. I think it especially works together when you consider the other songs it was intentionally paired with- "Junkhead", "Dirt", "God Smack", and "Angry Chair".
Bonus shout-out to "Love, Hate, Love". Freaky lyrics and one of my favorite songs ever.
IMO Am I Inside is the darkest AIC song.
Head Creeps is up there too
Am I Inside. I love it, but it's a depressfest.
Get Born Again though
