Hasan: You got snacks, right? Snacks? Hey, I’m Hasan Minhaj and this is Watch With Me So, I'm a child of immigrants, and my mom would always pull out movies from the library. So anything from the library we could watch but going to the movie theater was a big deal. It was one of the first times where I really felt the power of what cinema was. [90s funk music plays] Hasan: What I loved about Rush Hour is Chris Tucker... You know, during that era was kind of my generation’s Eddie Murphy. Charm, charisma, comedy. Chris Tucker: I’m the king. I’m Michael Jackson, you Tito. Even what I love most about the movie is he has the physicality to it. just the– You guys remember that. [Hip-hop music plays] And then he looks at Jackie Chan and says Can you do that to the Beach Boys? Hasan: TV and movies are an opportunity to show people things they've never seen before. Chloe: I didn’t know you were Muslim, Muslim. Ramy: Yeah. Hasan: When I saw Ramy it was so refreshing to see my lived experience on screen. Chloe: I asked you, “Do you want another glass of wine?” And you were like, “No I’m at my limit.” Ramy: Well, I was at my limit. My limit is just none Cause I’m... Muslim. Hasan: And so for Ramy to take the specificity of being, you know, a young Muslim kid from Jersey trying to figure out his relationship with the modern world and with God. That's like what my life was like growing up! I have a three-year-old and a one-year-old. And me and my daughter are super close now. And I just can't wait for her to get to that age where we can watch movies together. I remember watching A Bronx Tale
with my dad and one of my favorite scenes is when Lorenzo tells his son, “There’s nothing worse than–” Lorenzo: wasted talent. You could have all the talent in the world but if you don’t do the right thing then nothing happens. You hear me? Calogero: You’re right. Hasan: Maybe this is my dad's long con to get me to stop doing comedy and eventually go to law school. Chris Rock: Oh, Lord! Hasan: One of my roommates was watching Chris Rock's Never Scared. My parents basically had this rule, growing up– no cable. All of the, like, the formidable TV shows and movies that shaped a lot of my contemporaries in comedy I missed out on. And then when I came to college, it was this huge revelation and it changed my life. Honestly. Chris, if you're watching, it changed my life. Me as a speech and debate kid I saw this comedy special and I was like “This is funny speech and debate.” Chris Rock: I love rap music, man. I love it! But I’m tired of defending it. Hasan: Rock is basically in forensics. he’s just making a comedic argument. Chris Rock: And in the old days,
it was easy to defend rap music. It was easy to defend it on
an intellectual level. Hasan: It just made me feel like, wow there is value in what I'm interested in and I–I could do that. I want to do that. Chris Rock: It's hard to defend,
“Move... get out the way.” Hasan: Honestly, if it wasn't for Chris Rock’s Never Scared I don't know if I would even be a comedian. Hasan: I've been touring the past ten years of my career. And whenever I'm in a hotel You’ve Got Mail is on. Computer Voice: You’ve Got Mail! Hasan: It’s sweet, it’s charming, it's beautiful. Joe Fox: How about some coffee or you know,
drinks or dinner... or a movie? Hasan: It's all about how they're looking for connection and love. Like, it's a really sweet, funny, touching movie. Joe Fox: For as long as we both shall live. Hasan: It does have the same love story that Bollywood movies have. [Bollywood music plays] Hasan: People oftentimes think Bollywood films are one note. “Oh, they're just musicals.” They’re not. The storytelling is actually deeply layered because they hit all the core emotions that human beings and families just deal with: Anger Jealousy Love I don’t think people understand actually how dope the storytelling really is. Relationships are also a core comedic sort of tent pole. It’s part of our act. I think you should definitely watch Ted Lasso. Hasan: Sudeikis is great in it. It's this oddly heartfelt, endearing comedy. [car horn honking] Ted Lasso: Hey look this car’s got an
invisible steering wheel! [car horn honking] I’m just kidding It’s my man Nate here running the horn! And if anyone is in the, you know in the mustache communities... he looks great! [Rock music plays] He looks great. My watchlist is all about rewatchability. What's something that I can turn on, and just watch over, and over, and over again. It’s comfort food for movies. Hey so it was so great hanging out with you. If you want to watch with me and see more check out my watchlist on Google TV. [funk music plays] Watchlist. Done. Finito. [Funk music continues]
