the debate has raged on for decades does
violence in mass media have a direct impact on aggression in the humans who are consuming it
some researchers state that it unequivocally does While others insist it does not a 13-year-old
boy in China killed three of his family members and it was claimed that programs he watched
on television taught him how to carry out these murders and to dispose of the bodies
in Wisconsin two 12-year-old girls brutally stabbed their friend 19 times allegedly
to appease the internet created fictional character slender and in 2016 Australian
teenager Britney Jade DWI brutally stabbed her grandfather to death claiming she had been
inspired by the popular horror television series American Horror Story however the way that DWI
carried out this murder has led many to wonder if she was being honest about her assertion
or if there was simply something very very wrong with Britney J DWI on a much deeper level
Britney's life started like many others she grew up in a quiet Suburban neighborhood surrounded
by family and friends but her path would take a much darker turn than her peers today we will
explore the events that led a seemingly ordinary teenager to commit an unthinkable crime one
that sent shock waves through her family and community and made headlines throughout the world

August 8th 2016 police were called to the craigm Adelaide Home of 81-year-old Robert Whitwell
at around 11:30 a.m. Robert had been found in his home stabbed multiple times and he'd been
left by his assent to bleed out and the way he was discovered was actually because a neighbor had
gone to check on Robert after this neighbor became worried when an unread newspaper had remained in
Robert's driveway for more than a day and this was out of character for Robert who was described as
a perfect gentleman by those who knew him a man who was incredibly independent for his Advanced
age who kept his home and garden in Immaculate condition and neighbors also said that Robert had
won hell of a sense of humor he could always be counted on for an entertaining chat and a funny
story Robert's wife Joyce had been diagnosed with dementia and she was living in a nearby nursing
home and according to Robert's grandson Ryan his grandfather still treated his beloved wife like a
queen the same way he treated her throughout their entire lives together every day at the same time
Robert would visit with Joyce at the nursing home he would hold her hand talk to her and brush her
hair even though many days she had no recollection of who he was but his presence seemed to calm
her even so Ryan remembered a time when he was young and he looked at Robert and Joyce as the
true definition of Love Robert would always hold doors open for his wife he would call and book her
weekly hairo for her but Robert treated all of his family with an immense amount of kindness and
love and even though he lived alone in Adelaide he did all he could to stay connected to them
especially his grandchildren Ryan and his sister Britney when Robert got his first cell phone he
wanted to practice so dozens of text messages were sent between himself Ryan and Britney messages
filled with humor joy and unconditional love but according to Ryan at some point his sister Britney
stopped responding to these messages and in fact her life seemed to have taken a turn for the worst
Britney had grown up like any other kid playing soccer blowing out birthday candles spending
time with her older brother who she was very close to and going to school but as she reached
her teenage years something seemed to interrupt the Carefree and innocent nature of childhood
Brenny's mother Tanya said that in high school her daughter had made a new best friend Shelby
Holmes and the two girls would become obsessed with knives and violence Tanya said quote I think
they are a little bit dark as in they would do things in cemeteries and go to Cemetery tours and
dark things there were some things with blood and knives I think they had a bit of an obsession
with some dark stuff end quote and Shelby Holmes herself would later refute these claims saying
quote it was just what any other normal teenager would be interested in like horror movies and
things like that nothing alarming end quote and I do agree with Shelby on that aspect a teenage
girl or a teenage boy being interested in going to cemeteries doing Cemetery tours kind of being
interested in horror movies and things like that completely normal I still like to do those things
I go to cemeteries and sit there to relax and be alone and like write or read I enjoy being in
cemeteries I find them very peaceful I don't find them terrifying I like reading the gravestones
I like you know kind of thinking about the lives of the people who are buried there based on their
gravestones and coming up with different stories about who they were how they lived who they
loved so I don't find anything innately dark or concerning about the things that Britney's mother
said she was into however Britney's mother also did say that she was into you know dark things
like knives and violence and the things that she described like going to Cemetery tours and things
like that didn't really explain the knives and violence interest but we're going to talk about
that in a little bit Britney's brother Ryan said that he and his sister had always been close they
really enjoyed playing together and spending time together as children and even as adults they
lived together for a short time before Britney moved in with her friend Shelby however in the
months leading up to their grandfather's murder Ryan said his sister seemed different it seemed
as if she wasn't really taking care of herself or practicing basic hygiene like showering or
brushing her hair and when they'd planned A Mother's Day brunch for their mother at a fancy
hotel Britney had showed up looking disheveled and had made no effort to dress nicely which Ryan
noticed kind of upset and worried his mother Ryan was also very close to his grandfather Robert and
he often flew to Adelaide whenever he had a break from school or some time so that they could spend
time together the last time Ryan had seen Robert had been in March of 2016 to celebrate Robert's
81st birthday and during this visit they went out to lunch and paid a visit to to Nana Joyce who was
94 years old at the time over the next months Ryan kept in touch with his grandfather through their
texting conversations and everything seemed fine and normal so he was stunned when he received a
call from his mother in August of 2016 telling him that Robert her father and his grandfather was
gone he'd been stabbed to death and the police were investigating Tanya told Ryan that his sister
Britney had already been informed of this tragic news and they were going to meet at the airport
so they could fly to Adelaide and be with Tanya's family during this terrible time of loss and grief
Ryan said that when he saw his sister Britney at the airport her eyes were red as if she'd been
crying and she looked as if she hadn't slept or showered in days Ryan also remembered arriving on
Edward Avenue in craigmore at his grandfather's house and seeing police tape roping off Robert's
house and he remembered that when they walked up The Path and approached the front door Britney
broke down sobbing uncontrollably so distraught that her mother had to hold her up and help her
inside inside of Robert's clean and well-kept home Ryan saw a card addressed to him sitting on
the kitchen counter ready to be mailed out Ryan's 24th birthday was right around the corner and
thoughtful as always Robert had made sure that his warm birthday wishes would reach his grandson
and give Ryan a bright spot in his day the police also told Robert's family that when they had found
his body they'd also found his computer a laptop that had been propped open displaying old family
pictures the detectives said that they weren't sure what had happened to Robert even though he'd
been found with four stab wounds they said Robert could have taken his own life or it could have
been an accident he may have been the victim of a robbery turned violent now Ryan knew that his
grandfather would never harm himself and nothing in the house seemed to be missing including a
great deal of cash that Ryan knew Robert had hidden in his home Robert had saved for years
to store away $111,000 all in cash and he kept this entire life savings in a secret drawer in
the shed in the backyard of his home the door to the shed had been found open but the money
hadn't been touched none of it made sense but that was the job of the police to figure out while
the family of Robert Whitwell focused on trying to Grapple with this strange and sad new reality of
a world without a man who was larger than life in the aftermath of Robert's death Britney DWI cried
and talked and laughed with her family about her grandfather's life she said that it couldn't have
been murder because everyone loved Robert he never had an enemy in his life Robert's Brothers Jeffrey
and Peter consoled Britney who was clearly very affected even though they too were distraught by
the loss of their beloved brother one day during the Wake which took place at Robert's house
a neighbor Steven clay was out walking his dog when he came upon Britney sitting on the curb
outside of Robert's house on her phone he stopped and asked if she wanted to pet his dog and Britney
looked up and told Steven clay in a deadpan voice that her grandfather was dead later Steven clay
said quote I said to her that I was sorry for her loss and hoped that she was okay I then asked
her if she would be all right and she said that she doesn't know what's going to happen to all her
grandfather's money now at the time I didn't think much of it but a bit later I thought it was odd
that she would mention the money so soon after a loss end quote 3 weeks later 19-year-old Britney
was arrested for the murder of her grandfather along with a young woman named bernardet Burns
who her mother and brother had never even heard of as it turns out Britney had become aware that
her grandfather had a great deal of cash stashed away in his house she'd heard her mother on the
phone begging Robert to put the money in the bank where it would be safe but Robert like many people
didn't trust the banks didn't trust that his money would be safe in the banks I do think that this
is an older person thing sometimes because you know they they lived through times when the banks
would run run out of money and then just shut the doors and say sorry we can't give you your money
so Robert really felt much safer with his money in his own house where he knew where it was he
knew where he could find it and nobody could deny him his money and so after Britney heard
this conversation she hatched a plan with her friend but the initial plan had not been put
together with bernardet Burns it had first involved her best friend Shelby holes who would
also be arrested shortly afterwards and charged with criminal trespassing so here's what happened
on April 30th 2016 Britney DWI and Shelby Holmes drove over 120 mi from Queensland where they were
living to Adelaide with the specific intention of robbing Robert Whitwell before leaving the two
girls packed a sports bag that contained bolt cutters tin snips a knife a hammer gloves a torch
and some cable ties when they arrived in Adelaide Britney and Shelby checked into a motel near
Robert's home and they began watching him in his house to get an idea of his movements they wanted
that $111,000 but Britney was just not sure where her grandfather kept it so she sent Shelby to keep
an eye on things while she waited at the motel for news as Shelby cased Robert's house she sent
Britney text messages keeping her apprised and one text message read quote he said hey to me OMG he's
lovely end quote referring to Robert who was known to be incredibly friendly with a kind word and
a smile for everyone even a strange teenage girl who was hanging around his house with nefarious
intentions now Britney responded back with a text and this text absolutely blows my mind and is
going to contribute to the you know conclusion that I have about Britney but Britney's text said
quote he is very lovely don't get attached to him he might have to Die end quote like I said this
is crazy to me because Britney is acknowledging he's a lovely person he's very lovely she's not
saying H actually he's not as lovely as you think or he's actually a super violent or aggressive
person or he's not a very nice person he just puts on a mask she's not saying any of that she's
acknowledging my grandfather is a very lovely person don't get attached to him he might have to
die which makes me feel that even though Britney knew her grandfather was a lovely man even though
she knew that she at least acted as if she loved him I don't know if she really did I don't know
if Britney at the end of the day was attached to her grandfather who she had known for her entire
life on May 2nd Shelby and Britney returned to Robert's home and they scaled the fence that led
into his backyard but the security light flashed on and then they started hearing a dog barking
at a neighbor's home and this spooked the two girls into abandoning their plan they rushed
back to Shelby's car and they drove away from there Britney sped to Brisbane for a Mother's Day
brunch during which she would appear unkempt and out of it now here's a little Wrinkle in the story
because according to Britney she and Shelby were more than just friends they were lovers even
though Shelby Holmes denies this we're going to talk a little bit more about this later but
either way at some point shortly after the failed robbery attempt the relationship between Shelby
and Britney whether it was friendly or romantic it broke down and Britney moved out of Shelby's
Place and she moved into the house of a new friend burnadette Burns who apparently she had met on
Facebook and then a few months later Britney reged grouped and planned to return to her grandfather's
house to steal his money the following August but this time she would be accompanied by bernardet
Burns now at this time court records show that Britney was not doing well financially and on the
day that she and bernardet took the long drive to Adelaide her bank account was overdrawn by $24
the following day it was overdrawn by $70 and by August 5th the bank account was overdrawn by $470
and this was the day that Britney knocked on her grandfather's door wearing gloves and concealing
a knife while bernardette Burns waited in the car at the curb touching up her makeup Robert was
so happy to receive this unexpected visit from his granddaughter and he invited Britney in the
two had a quick breakfast and then Robert began showing Britney photos on his laptop computer
photos of her grandmother photos of herself and her brother Ryan as a young child as this was
happening Britney texted bernardet and told her the plan was off she couldn't go through with it
but bernardet told Britney toughen up they'd come all this way after all court records show that
5 to 10 minutes after this text exchange Britney told her grandfather that she had to leave and
like the gentleman that Robert was always known to be he walked Britney to the front door to see her
off as they approached the door Britney removed her knife from its hiding place and stabbed
Robert in the neck in shock Robert spun around he turned towards Britney and placed his hands
on her shoulders at which point she stabbed him again in in the chest and in the neck a total of
four times Robert was stabbed court records show that Robert asked Britney why she was doing this
but she didn't answer the jury in Britney's trial would hear that Robert then stumbled into the
kitchen to get a Band-Aid which Britney helped him apply before handing him a washcloth and
then walking away she went to the sink where she proceeded to do the dishes as her grandfather bled
out and died alone Britney then texted bernid at two words it's done bernardet Burns then entered
the house and she and Britney began to search for the $111,000 that they knew Robert had stashed
somewhere however even though they entered the shed in the backyard they did not locate the
hidden drawer where Robert kept the majority of his cash and they ended up leaving with $11,000
that they'd taken from Robert's wallet along with some collectible coins and two digital cameras
that's it $1,000 around noon less than an hour after stabbing her 81 one-year-old grandfather
to death Britney dwer posted on Facebook and she posted quote the story of my life I knew better
but I did it anyway and I have to wonder this glimmer of regret Britney seemed to be feeling in
the aftermath of Robert's death was it because she had killed him was she feeling regret because
she had killed him or was she feeling regret because she'd been unable to locate his money
and she realized that this man who had lived a good life who'd been good to everybody around him
for 81 years a man she'd known a man who had loved her since she had been born he died for a thousand
bucks he had died at her hand for a thousand bucks and some coins back in Queensland Britney and
bernardet returned to their lives but it seemed that someone was having some difficulty wrestling
with what had happened to Robert Whitwell and it wasn't Britney it was bernardet Burns Britney
and bernardet shared the house they lived in with two other people jod grees and and her boyfriend
Jamie Dennis jod would later tell the police that bernardet had told her the reason she and Britney
had driven to Adelaide was to Rob Britney's grandfather and jod said that bernardet told her
before they' left Britney had joked to bernardet that she was going to kill Robert jod said that
at first bernardet had thought britty was joking but as jod and bernardet were talking about
this bernardet burst into tears and confessed everything jod Greaves told police quote bernardet
then told me it took about 20 minutes for him to die and Britney did the dishes while he was dying
I was pretty silent for a while after she told me this as I was totally shocked I told bernardet
that I was shocked and I wasn't sure if she was playing a joke on me bernardet told me it wasn't
the first time Britney had killed someone she said that Britney's friend caught herpes from a bloke
and Britney went and killed him and dumped his body in a lake end quote as we would come to find
out bernardet Burns was not the only person that Britney discussed death with over 19,000 texts had
been exchanged between Britney and her old friend Shelby hommes over the course of the previous 2
years and these messages had been deleted from Shelby's phone but law enforcement would recover
them from Britney's phone as it turned out just months before the murder the two women had been
discussing some pretty dark fantasies prosecutor Amy Fisher would reveal during a future baale
hearing quote there are numerous texts between the two of them where they talk about slicing
the throats of people going on mass Rampages and killing people at Rave parties end quote fiser
continued on saying quote I appreciate that may well be just a flippant conversation between
two friends but in the circumstances where an elderly man has been in fact murdered police
have no choice but to take these conversations very seriously end quote I don't know about you
but I don't have flipping conversations with my friends about slicing people's throats at Rave
parties nope never have not at all never not once Shelby and Britney also discussed in texts and
in detail the plan to Rob Britney's grandfather even making light of the whole situation during
one text exchange the pair discussed a mutual friend who had suddenly come into some money and
Britney joked quote maybe they beat us to poppers end quote they also talked about stealing drugs
from Shelby's mother who was a Veterinary nurse so technically we have three people involved in
some way with this robbery/murder plot Britney DWI bernardet Burns and Shelby Holmes and they were
all subsequently arrested and faced a variety of charges 19-year-old Shelby Holmes was charged
with one count of serious Criminal Trespass for her part in watching Robert Whitwell for several
days during which she received a text from Britney telling her to not get too attached to the lovely
old man because he might have to die Shelby Holmes was charged with criminal trespass and sentenced
to 17 months in jail with a non-parole period of 9 months initially she was denied bail with
her lawyer Andrew George announcing that this decision would be challenged in the Supreme
Court saying quote my client has been caught up in the murder allegations in relation to her
friend but she's not charged in relation to the alleged crime it's absolutely unfair that Bale
was refused her parents are pretty upset they want to go home she's not involved in the murder
end quote Oh her parents are pretty upset and they want to go home okay are her parents are pretty
upset that she's not being given bail are they not pretty upset that she uh took part in a plan
to rob an old man of his money during which she was told straight out and explicitly that he might
have to die or that not upset them they just want to go home they just want to go home I think
you see this pattern of lack of accountability that parents place on their children and these
children going on to do things not necessarily violent things not necessarily committing murder
but things that you know lack a moral compass now Justice David LEL would later allow Shelby's
parents to bail her out despite the prosecution and the South Australian police voicing their
concerns that her release might interfere with the murder investigation they said that Shelby
could potentially contact key Witnesses Shelby was allowed to go home with her parents where
she was given strict conditions which included a curfew and orders to not contact any prosecution
witnesses I don't know if those are really strict conditions but okay like you have a curfew and
you can't intimidate prosecution witnesses Shelby these seem just like the bare minimum but okay
it didn't really matter because Shelby sentence would later be suspended on the condition that
she' be on her best behavior for the next 3 years now the following November Shelby Holmes
appeared on 7 News Spotlight do you want to say sorry yes um sorry that all this ever happened anything you would say to Britney anything you would say to T that I'm sorry that I went there in April
but you know if I had known what she was planning to do I would have warned her but
I had no idea so I wasn't able to warn her and anything you would say to Robert sorry 22-year-old bernardet Burns was
set to face trial for murder but on the day her trial was scheduled to begin she decided to
plead guilty to murder she'd been charged with two counts of murder under separate sections of
South Australia's criminal law consolidation act her guilty plea related to count two under
Section 12a which similar to felony murder in the United States found her to have caused
the death of Robert Whitwell while committing an intentional act of violence while carrying
out another offense and in this case the other offense would be robbery even though the first
count was dismissed what bernardet burns pleaded guilty to still came with the maximum sentence of
life imprisonment with a mandatory non-par period of 20 years now Bernadette's lawyer Anthony Allen
argued that his client should receive a non-parole period lower than the 20 years because she had not
been the one who actually committed the murder he stated quote she did not plan The Killing and
was not present when the physical offense took place she did not have the intention to kill or
do Grievous bodily harm she feels great shame and sorrow for what she did end quote I guess he just
wanted to completely ignore the fact that Britney was like uh plans off I can't go through with
it and berned out was like come on man we came all this way you're here you know toughen up
harden up don't be such a baby just kill your grandfather right and I think that this is very
important not necessarily important because of what she's said right because Britney's still
completely responsible for her own actions but let's take a quick look at this whole scenario
if were to believe Bernadette's lawyer she went there with the plan to just Rob Robert right to
just take his money however she sat in the car while Britney went inside and Britney went
inside wearing gloves and holding a knife a knife that bernardet knew Britney had and it's
not like Britney and bernardet went into the house together had breakfast with Robert together
sat down and looked at pictures with him and then you know because there was two of them and only
one of him said all right Robert we're here to rob you thanks for breakfast thanks for the walk
down memory lane but uh we're going to need you to sit in this chair so we can ziptie you and keep
you secured and then we're going to go and and get your money and tell us where it is right of course
not that's not what happened if your plan was only to go there to Rob this man why did you wait in
in the car and then when Britney texted you and said oh I can't go through with it AKA killing
him you told her toughen up we we came all this way got to do it man and then you waited for her
to text you to tell you it was done and and that this man was dead before you walked inside you
knew that Britney was going in there to murder this man Britney knew she was going in there to
murder this man the knife wasn't uh you know a scare tactic something to threaten Robert with
because then what right you walk in there you tie him up you take his money but then he's going
to tell someone right he's going to call your mom Britney he's going to call the police you're
not going to get away with this you knew both of you knew the only way you would be able to get
away with this was if he was dead so I find the minimization of Bernadette's part in this to be a
little offensive to our intelligence and Robert's memory so Bernadette's lawyer alen he said that
bernardet had been addicted to methamphetamine at the time of the murder and now she felt a deep
regret for her part in it and she realizes what she has done is unforgivable but he also said you
know she's got a 4-year-old daughter who's not an Australian Citizen and you know give her a lower
parole period because after her release Burns is going to be deported back to her home country
of New Zealand and it feels like he's kind of saying don't worry you can let her out sooner
because she won't be Australia's problem send her to New Zealand right and then they can worry
about whether or not she's going to reoffend in November of 2017 bernardet was sentenced to life
in prison with a non-parole period of 13.5 years and that that pretty much means she's going to get
out in 13 and a half years um you know she's not going to serve life in prison there is no chance
that this this woman's going to be in prison for life and you know very very likely chance that
she's going to get out after 13 years now to be fair I do not necessarily believe that either
Shelby Holmes or burned at burns are a danger to society and I I highly doubt that either
of them will go on to murder anyone right I definitely don't think Shelby Holmes would hurt
anyone um I think that she probably got herself wrapped up in Britney's plan and when Britney said
oh don't get to attach to him he might have to die and then they didn't follow through with the plan
and then they went home Shelby was probably like thinking about this and kind of being like Oh
that's really [ __ ] up so that's probably the reason that the relationship between Shelby and
Britney deteriorated shortly after they went to Robert's house Adelaide however Britney dwire is
a completely different story Britney would also be sentenced in November of 2017 but months before in
July she told a psychiatrist that her grandfather had molested her as a child an assertion that
prosecutor Jim Pierce told the judge was very convenient considering quote in those extensive
records of interviews where Miss dwira was putting her cards on the table to police she put forward
her version of events which developed over time it started out with her saying no I wasn't involved
to eventually in the second interview saying yes I was there I did it I was the perpetrator then
in the fifth interview she was pressed further about her underlying motives in all of the
interviews there was not one syllable uttered by her on any occasion that her grandfather had
done anything to her or that she had gone there as she tells the psychiatrist to speak to her
grandfather about these issues end quote Yeah Britney told the psychiatrist that her grandfather
had molested her for years and that she went there that day to confront him about it and that's
why she ended up killing him we we know that's [ __ ] right that's absolute [ __ ] um the fact
that Shelby Holmes had texted her oh my God your grandfather's lovely and brandia texted back he's
very lovely instead of saying yeah he you know he looks lovely or he seems lovely but he's a really
bad person tells me everything I need to know the fact that she never told any friends or family
or anything about this tells me exactly what I need to know now pierce the prosecutor asked the
presiding judge who was Justice Nicholson to not take this portion of Britney's psychiatric report
that's serious seriously saying it was Insidious to a man who was murdered in such a way and Pier
stated quote in my submission the court would be entitled to infer with the absence of evidence
from M dwire about this that it is just simply an invention designed to give her an explanation for
why she acted as she did because the only other explanation is premeditated pre-planned almost
sociopathic killing end quote Britney DWI was represented by attorney Craig cicott although
you wouldn't know it sometimes from hearing cicott talk about her he told the court that his
client was not sure whether her sudden flashbacks of abuse at the hands of her grandfather were
real or not and they would not be including these claims as a motive in the murder which
makes absolute sense that you wouldn't include these claims as a motive in the murder because
you have no evidence of these claims like you said your own client doesn't know herself whether
they happened or not you would however try to use them as a mitigating factor for her sentencing
you might use this alleged abuse as a way to to get her a lighter sentence kott said quote the
motivation is obviously robbery of money from Mr Whitwell but it seems to be to a certain extent
motivated by a TV program called American Horror Story that aspect is very troubling end quote put
a pin in the American Horror Story thing because we're going to come back to it later but first
let's hear what else Craig cicott had to say about his client Britney DWI he claimed that Britney
had a troubling childhood and she was currently suffering from borderline personality disorder
while also on the daily abusing a heavy amount of substances according to Britney every single day
she consumed large amounts of cannabis followed by a bottle of vodka with a cocaine and ecstasy
Chaser I mean that would explain why she was broke and why her bank account was constantly overdrawn
right because she said she was smoking an ounce of weed a day and I don't know what it's like in
Australia but here in the US an ounce of weed can run you anywhere from 60 bucks to over $300 and
she was allegedly smoking an ounce a day that's an expensive habit along with all these other drugs
all these other hard drugs and alcohol those are expensive habits but even Britney's own lawyer
wasn't buying her claims like I said sometimes he would talk and I'd be reading the article and
I'd be like oh isn't this Britney's lawyer and then I'd be like yes it is Britney's lawyer he
seems to not really be buying any of her [ __ ] Craig kott said quote the amount of drugs she was
talking about taking is a near impossibility she talked about smoking an ounce of cannabis a day
even hardened cannabis users would normally smoke an ounce a week end quote and listen that's a very
hardened cannabis user like an ounce a weak even is a lot now cicott claimed that it may have
looked from the outside that Britney was part of a loving family but there were aspects of self
harm in her life that turned into a life of drug taking Justice Kevin Nicholson questioned these
claims saying that from everything he had learned Brady had a pretty good upbringing a nice family
a good education describing the murder of Robert WAW well as callous and inexplicable Justice
Nicholson said quote I have to consider whether dwire is a very dangerous person who at 19 has
gone from zero to premeditated murder this was not a crime of passion there's no alcohol or drugs
involved this is just a straight out I'm going to do it end quote Nicholson went on to say that it
deed Britney lacked empathy stating quote when someone is of that nature it's hard to measure
Contrition it may be that she's just not capable of it which is a worrying Factor end quote and I
believe when he says when someone's of that nature he's describing Psychopathic Tendencies because
who lacks empathy who lacks empathy people like narcissists Psychopaths and this is something you
can't fix you can't teach somebody to feel empathy when they just don't right this is not something
that you can heal or cure somebody from so yeah Justice Nicholson even you know Britney's own
lawyer none of these people seem to really be buying into what Britney is saying and if Britney
was expecting Compassion or understanding from her family members she would end up being greatly
disappointed Robert's brother Jeffrey talked to the court about how he and his brothers were
all very close and he would speak to Robert on the phone often but now he would never pick up the
phone to hear his brother's voice on the other end of the line he also discussed through tears how
his family had mourned with Britney after Robert's murder saying quote we welcomed you into our home
embraced you comforted you all the while you wept fake tears and made comments like my poor Papa I
now know that I had been embracing and comforting my brother's killer you are a master of deception
I will give you that I will never forgive you you are a cruel deceitful person with no regard for
human life I believe you are dangerous and Evil and deserve the highest penalty end quote and
I mean like this is one of the most horrifying aspects of this case that Britney literally
allowed the the people who were closest to Robert to comfort her after his death to you know
rep their arms around her because she was just so distraught about it and and try to you know put
their own pain aside to make her feel better and can you imagine being in the shoes of Robert's
Brothers knowing that knowing that this this woman had taken your brother's life just days before and
now you were embracing her and and you know trying to make her feel better this is truly psychotic
what she did what she put people through briny's own mother Tanya agreed wholeheartedly telling
Channel 7 quote I think she deserves 20 years in jail she did the crime she admitted to it she
pleaded guilty what are the signs that I missed what did I miss what didn't I see what didn't
I pick up on it was a person I trusted that I brought into the world that I raised to be a good
person it's like a nightmare that I never wake up from every day I think when is this nightmare
going to finish and it doesn't it's my life end quote now Tanya did mention something from
Britney's childhood that may have foreshadowed her future actions according to adelaid now.com
when Britney was 8 she would chase her older brother Ryan around the house with a knife and
13-year-old Ryan was so afraid that he would lock himself in the bathroom while his younger sister
waved the knife under the bathroom door any said that both Britney and Ryan didn't tell her about
this incident until almost a decade later and she said quote I didn't think much about it at the
time other than it was the kids talking about Past Times end quote and this is not normal okay I
I am not going to sit here and blow smoke and tell you that an 8-year-old chasing her 11-year-old
brother around the house with a real knife and then when he locks himself in the bathroom and
and is upset and scared because you're chasing him with a real knife you you decide to put the
knife under the door and wave it around at him that's not normal that's not normal behavior and
you know I've seen my own kids do this kind of stuff like they'll have fake Halloween knives
and they'll you know play like Jason or Freddy or you know Michael Myers and they'll dress up
and stuff around Halloween and they get into it never in my life would I look at my daughter
who's six now chasing her older brother around the house with a real knife to be a normal thing
that I should not be concerned about ever so I do think that that sort of does indicate Britney
had some things going on with her even before she became a teenager and started hanging out in
cemeteries and started doing drugs and you know all of these things even Britney's own brother
Ryan announced that he did not believe his sister deserved leniency in her sentence because their
grandfather had always gone above and beyond for both of them as he did for everyone in anyone he
cared about and at the end of the day I personally didn't know Robert but from how his loved ones
have described him I genuinely think that he would have willingly and gladly given Britney money
if she told him that she needed it because he's 81 years old what's he saving $111,000 for he's
not saving it for himself he's 81 years old he's not you know traveling the world he's saving this
money so that he has something to leave behind for his family when he dies that money a portion of
it at least was most likely intended for Britney anyways and Robert would have just looked at it
as an advance on her inheritance she could have gone there had breakfast with him looked at old
photos and then said pop pop you know I'm in a rough spot man I am overdrawn in my bank account
I'm really stressed out about it I can't pay my rent can you loan me some money and he probably
would have gone and gotten the money and given it to her without any push back without any questions
now Britney would be sentenced to life in prison with a non-pro period of 20 years like I said
once again this girl will probably not see life in prison she'll probably be pared after 20 years
and there was a blog post that Britney's brother Ryan wrote and he says that she deserves this he
also says that on Christmas and on his birthday he will receive cards from Britney and they've
written a few letters back and forth but she's never explained her actions after her sentencing
Britney reportedly expressed sadness and regret for what she had done she said she would take it
all back if she could empty and Hollow words if I've ever heard them but mostly Britney seemed
concerned with her old friend Shelby Holmes who was Den ding that the two of them had ever been
romantically involved Britney's lawyer said that she was distraught by this stating quote she's
going to spend the next 20 years in custody and that's an incredibly long time for someone who
is only just turned 20 years old um side note it's not an incredibly long time for somebody who
brutally murdered someone in Cold Blood that's not an incredibly long time for that but anyways let's
continue on what else did Britney's lawyer say he said quote she knows that through her actions
she has lost her grandfather her entire family and now her girlfriend who will not admit that
they were a couple end quote it kind of seemed like Britney lost Shelby far before the murder but
okay now this statement came after Shelby gave an interview to channel 7 during which she insisted
that she and Britney had never dated I don't know if they did or not I don't think it matters first
of all um it's not Britney's place to tell Shelby what she needs to admit to the world if Shelby
is not ready to admit that this was a romantic relationship if she's not even ready to admit that
you know she's into women then that's Shelby's business Britney has no place to be getting upset
or feeling um you know put out or discarded that that Shelby will not admit this to the world and
Britney has no place to feel anything about Shelby because you murdered your grandfather dude you
murdered your grandfather and Shelby doesn't want to have anything to do with you at this point so
do you see what I'm saying here Britney's like I feel bad that I killed my grandfather and like I
deeply regret it and like if I could change it and do it all over again I'd do it different but I'm
really pissed off about Shelby not admitting our love like that's what I'm going to focus on here
brinny doesn't have any empathy for anybody else she doesn't care about anybody else not even
Shelby what Britney cares about is how Shelby made her feel like a typical narcissist what
Britney cares about is what other people can do for her like a typical narcissist now I have
one last thing to tell you before we move on in this video and I don't know if it's a sad thing
or a happy thing honestly I it is a sad thing but it could also be I guess kind of hopeful shortly
after Robert's murder his wife Nana Joyce passed away in the nursing home she was in her 90s and
she was suffering from dementia but I believe that something else may have contributed to her
death and that something else would be sadness you know sadness that the man who had treated her
like a queen for years the man who came to see her every day to hold her hand talk softly to her and
brush her hair he stopped showing up I don't know what I believe about what happens after we die
I don't know what I believe about an afterlife or reincarnation or Heaven hell things like that
I I don't know but if there is a heaven I hope that Robert and Joyce are there and that they're
together and that they're once again strolling hand in hand she's leaning into him looking up
into his eyes laughing he's looking down at her with love in his eyes he's cradling her face in
his hands and placing sweet kiss after sweet kiss on her lips and they are together forever as
they were always meant to be a gentleman King with his beautiful queen what Britney J DWI did
to her grandfather is unforgivable and it's not justified by any alleged drug use or money issues
and I truly believe that only a deeply depraved individual with Psychopathic Tendencies would
be capable of doing such a thing but that does bring us to something that Bernie's lawyer said
the fact that her actions had been partially inspired by the television show American Horror
Story American Horror Story is a highly popular and critically acclaimed Anthology television
series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad falchuk the show first premiered in 2011 and has since
run for multiple Seasons each season with its own unique story line characters and setting while the
specifics of each season Barry the series is well known for its blend of horror drama and Darkly
Twisted narratives with common themes including Supernatural occurrences psychological Terror
and many many evil and violent characters now as far as I know the connection between American
Horror Story and Britney DWI was never explained outside of this brief comment made by her lawyer
but then again many aspects of Britney's case were never revealed to the public including almost all
of those 19,000 texts she sent and received with the exception of the few we've discussed in this
video now I would venture to say that there was discussion in these text messages about American
Horror Story with Shelby Holmes you know Shelby and Britney were into horror movies which means
they were probably into American Horror Story they were into going to cemeteries and taking Cemetery
tours and into dark stuff so they most likely discussed American Horror Story they most likely
talked about maybe you know things that were happening in the show that they would do like for
instance the whole throat slicing at a rave thing sounds very American Horror Story inspired it's
it's got an AHS aesthetic to it so I guarantee you that's where this was brought up but we don't
know for sure we don't know for sure what the American Horror Story connection was however this
does open the debate about whether violence in television movies and video games causes violent
behavior in people which has been a complex and ongoing discussion for decades becoming the
subject of research public policy discussion and controversy now in this next section of
the video we're going to get into psychology right some psychological studies we're going to
discuss and explore this topic so if you simply came here here because you are interested in the
case at hand and the psychology Behind these cases doesn't interest you and you're not into it you
know you can you can shut off now you can go and watch another video but if you want to know more
and if you want to dive deeper stay with me and we'll talk about it but I don't want to hear any
comments in the comment section being like H this psychology talk is so boring it's actually not
but if you find it boring then you should click out now I'll give you a second all right let's
dive in okay there have been so many studies done on this you know violence in media thing that it
would be impossible to discuss them all it's it's impossible to um really go as deep as I'd want
to but you can find evidence and theories that support either argument like some people say that
it does some people say that it doesn't I have my own beliefs which I'll discuss at the end in 1969
after 15 years of consistently disturbing findings about violent content in children's programs the
surgeon general's scientific advisory committee on television and social behavior was formed to
assess the impact of violence on the attitudes values and behavior of viewers and they found that
children who watched violence on television may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering
of others they may be more fearful of the world around them and they may be more likely to
behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others psychologist Albert bandora's research
in the 1970s revealed that a child's aggressive Acts were partly influenced by what they observed
bandura found that in general the more aggressive the people or films observed by the child the
more aggressive the child would act this is because children decide how to behave through
social learning by watching and then imitating others research started in the 1980s by multiple
psychologists found that children who watched many hours of violence on television when they were in
elementary school were more likely to show higher levels of aggressive behavior when they became
teen teers in young adults it was discovered through long-term studies meaning they will start
you know tracking subjects from a young age and then track them throughout their lives subjects
who watched a lot of violence on TV at the age of eight were more likely to be arrested and
prosecuted for criminal acts as adults in 1998 the national television violence study reported
that 60% of television shows included violent acts and I would say that in 2023 that percentage
has probably shot up dramatically I remember even just five seven years ago seeing you know violence
depicted on television and kind of being shocked by it and now I I see violence all the time on
television even in network television and it's way worse than the violence I was seeing you know 5 7
10 years ago on TV but even I am desensitized to it I'm not shocked any longer a National Institute
of Health study published in 2007 suggested that exposure to violence in television movies video
games cell phones and the internet increased the risk of violent behavior on the viewer's part the
same way that growing up in an environment filled with real violence increased the risk of people
behaving violently and we know this to be a fact right if you grow up in a household that is just
marked by violence or abuse there is a likelihood that you're going to be more violent because you
mimic those behaviors you think that they're okay you think that they're normal we have studies of
children who grow up in war torn countries exper experiencing horrible acts of violence in front of
their eyes and they either become just incredibly traumatized by it or they go on to repeat this
cycle the NIH states that this kind of exposure can have both short-term and long-term effects on
a person now the short-term effects of exposure to Media violence are mostly due to three different
processes which are priming arousal and mimicry priming occurs when an individual's exposure to
a certain stimulus influences their response to a subsequent prompt and this person will have
no awareness of that connection for example in word association tasks a subject who's presented
with the word doctor and then presented with a list of other words will pick out and recognize
the word nurse much more quickly than the word cat unconsciously our brain makes the link between
the words doctor and nurse the field of psychology claims that priming can have a large effect on
our decision-making and behavior and Studies have shown that we can be primed to behave in many
ways based on what we've read watched seen and heard and this is due to something called schemas
which are pieces of information stored in our long-term memory that form a cognitive framework
which helps us organize and interpret information schemas are basically patterns of thinking and
behavior that people use to interpret the world around them and these schemas can be activated by
sights smells and sound and when the schemas are triggered memories become easier to access priming
is the concept that certain schemas are activated in unison together and once relased related
schemas are activated and more accessible it becomes easier for us to make a connection between
the two so that in the future we react faster with related information when a unit of information
is activated so basically you're a kid right and you uh don't understand that the stove gets hot
when it's on and so you touch it and then you get burned and you only have to do that a couple
of times before your brain makes the connection between the stove and getting burned makes a
connection right between the stove and a high temperature so now in the future when you see the
stove immediately your brain's like stove getting burned right stove hot these are things that our
brain does to basically save us a lot of pain and in torment now the more these schemas are recalled
in unison the stronger the connection when media violence primes aggressive Concepts aggression is
more likely for example the sight of a gun becomes inherently linked to the concept of aggression
this is called the weapons Prime ring effect where the mere presence of a weapon whether
in real life or on TV or in a picture leads to more aggressive and less pro-social thoughts
and behaviors in humans now the second process is arousal the NIH states that media violence can
provoke psychological and physiological arousal through emotions like anger and fear which could
lead to disinhibition and or provocation transfer and that results in aggression so arousal is an
essential element in many influential theories on emotion and they state that the differences in
arousal levels in people lead people to be either extroverted or introverted now basically their
Baseline arousal is the same uh an introvert and an extrovert are going to have the same Baseline
arousal but their response to stimulation is different right so for instance if an extrovert
walks into a party filled with people and noise and stimulation uh they they're going to feel
almost energized by that they're going to be like yeah this is my [ __ ] This Is My Jam I love
this an introvert's going to walk into that same party and feel overstimulated and feel like okay
how long do I have to be here before I can leave and go home to my quiet house and read a book by
myself in regards to violence observed by a person aggressive behavior can become more likely in the
short term for two reasons excitation transfer and then General arousal first a stimulus arouses
an emotion such as anger and this anger may be perceived as more severe than it is because some
of the emotional response stimulated by the media presentation is misattributed due to provocation
transfer so once again for instance let's say you're watching the news and this happens to me
all the time by the way because I read about and research terrible things and I get like really
angry about it you know and so I'll use myself as an example then I'm in my office all day reading
about this horrible murder of like an innocent child and I'm really upset about it and I'm really
sad about it and and then I become angry about it the more I read and then I leave my office and my
husband's like oh hey baby um how is work don't forget that we have an appointment later and I
snap at him I'm angry with him well it seems like I'm angry with him I yell at him and I'm like why
I just stopped working can you give me freaking five minutes to collect my thoughts before you
just come talking to me and putting yourself in my face get the hell out of here right let's say
I did that now I'm not angry at him I'm angry at the things I just read about the things I just Ed
myself in but I'm taking my anger out on him that is excitation transfer so basically the degree of
anger that's experienced by a person is determined by the level of physiological arousal elicited by
whatever provoked them in this context whatever was seen in the media we have to go a step
further and understand that aggression is divided into two types proactive aggression which is go
directed aggression organized aggression without provocation it has historically functioned as a
means to to gain resources or attain domination or to protect yourself or your family or your
tribe and then there is reactive aggression which is impulse and emotion driven and involves
High effective physiological arousal this form of aggressive behavior occurs as a hostile response
to interpersonal provocations or threats Studies have found that those with Psychopathic
Tendencies are far more likely to engage in reactive aggression which causes them to hurt
innocent people people right so a serial killer for instance a serial killer like the Green River
Killer why did the Green River Killer kill all of those women what was his problem with these women
personally well he didn't have a problem with them personally they done nothing to him he didn't
even know them he was angry about other things happening a relationship with his mother maybe an
exgirlfriend or an ex-wife who had done him wrong and this causes him now to take his anger out on
somebody who he doesn't even know it's been shown that people who have higher levels of self-control
experience reactive aggression far less than their counterparts so basically uh you see something
on television that causes anger in you and you lash out in an aggressive manner towards another
person the third short-term process is mimicry which we've already discussed briefly because
evidence has shown that human and primate youths they have an innate tendency to mimic whomever
they observe observation of specific social behaviors around them increases is the likelihood
of children behaving exactly that way specifically as children observe violent Behavior they are
prone and likely to mimic it now the long-term effects of exposure to violence in the media are
due to observational learning and desensitization observational learning states that a person's
social behavior is controlled to a great extent by the interplay of current situations and
that person's emotional state as well as their schemas about the world their normative beliefs
about what is a appropriate and the scripts for social behavior that they have learned during
early middle and late childhood children encode in memory certain social scripts that guide their
behavior and these scripts are going to come from observation of family peers community and mass
media for instance if you grew up watching one of your parents openly being unfaithful to the
other you might believe that cheating on your spouse as an adult was something that everyone
did something that was completely acceptable to do and in kind extensive observation of violence has
been shown to bias children's World schemas toward attributing hostility to other people's actions
which I totally get because the more True Crime that I ingest the less trusting I am of others
the more I look at others with suspicion even as an adult which means that it's very powerful
now this is supposedly increasing the likelihood of children behaving aggressively because if they
look at other people as enemies as people who are potentially nefarious they will act in aggression
towards them now most of us are already familiar with the concept of desensitization which is
the idea that repeated exposure to emotionally activating Media or video games can lead to
negative emotions in response to violent or gory scenes declining in intensity after many exposures
so this means that usually the normal response when you see something terrifying or scary or
horrifying or violent you have a certain physical responses to this you have an increased heart
rate uh increased perspiration and self-reports of discomfort these things usually accompany
exposure to blood and gore but with repeated exposure it has been proven that these physical
reactions reduce you don't start getting a fast heart rate you don't start perspiring you don't
start to feel discomfort by what you're seeing and a child can think about and plan proactive
aggressive fact without experiencing negative emotions and this has actually been proven by
scientific studies now obviously as I said this is such a complex and contextual issue we've just
barely touched the tip of the iceberg but I will say that I don't completely dismiss the theory
that violence seen on television in the movies and video games the news social media increases
violence and aggression and decreases empathy as well as in my opinion sensitivity and compassion
I think that if you know anything about the brain this is common sense I think it also has certainly
been proven but like any other mitigating factors the end result is still up to the individual
right because I am a person who really does enjoy horror movies I like the horror genre I
like being scared I like going to haunted houses I enjoy it like millions of other people around
the world who consume violent media every single day but me and those other people aren't showing
up to our grandfather's house and stabbing him to death I personally believe at the end of the day
selfcontrol control and self-awareness along with enough positive social influences to balance out
the negative ones are the things that set these two groups of people apart the people who can
consume this kind of media and understand that they cannot go and act it out there is going
to be something different about a person like Britney DWI right something different about her
brain maybe a lack of impulse control um maybe a lack of empathy maybe all of the things that you
and I have which are empathy and you know just a general dislike of causing harm to people that
prevents us from seeing these things and thinking huh I would like to try that right but if you do
see these things and you think huh I would like to try that that is concerning and you should seek
some help okay that's all I'm going to say because I know that there's people out there like that
and they may be watching this video you should seek help unless you don't care and in that case
you should seek help that's the only thing I have to say but now I'm interested in hearing what you
have to say what do you think about Britney Jade DWI do you think that like me you know there's
something wrong with her that she may be maybe a little bit of a psychopath maybe a little bit
of a narcissist maybe there's something in her brain that just didn't you know allow her to have
any impulse control or self-control do you think that Shelby and bernardette should have gotten
harsher sentences what do you think about Shelby and Bernadette's part in Britney's murder of her
grandfather what do you think about this whole debate over or whether violence in media causes
violent behavior in others do you think there's anything to it are you completely against it
do you believe that there's no possible way that it could be true and it's just a way to you
know control and monitor what we're allowed to watch and just a you know government overreach
what do you think about everything let me know in the comments you know I love hearing from you
guys in the comments but before we go let's do Stephanie's small business showcase and today's
small business showcase comes to to us from Kelsey pain and the resins rejects so she says my name
is Kelsey I've been watching your channel since I was in college working my shitty retail job in
my time there I did a lot of shipping out orders in the back of the store and would listen to your
videos for hours while I worked I'm a few years out of college and still listen to you and now
crime weekly while I pack my own orders I have two different small shops on Etsy one that is resin
based focused on spooky horror and witchy items like the ghost figures floral skulls keychains
and more my other shop which is the one I'm more excited about growing is my sticker and stationer

and it says please be nice I very nervous I love these and I love that a lot of them are inspired
by you know popular media popular horror movies there's items inspired by Jennifer's Body like I
said the ring Beetle Juice she has a final girl magnet and that's basically just uh you know it's
a scream reference basically I think it's pretty much a horror movie reference but it's a scream
reference there's also a holographic sticker that says strange and unusual which I'm definitely
going to have to get because if you guys know I have a strange and unusual series that I do
throughout the year I think both of these shop are awesome the resin reject and the reex paper
