this video contains spoilers for half-life alex as humanity has grown and evolved over the years it has always sought to create the next best thing that could help in its future endeavors even during the combine occupation of planet earth the bright free minds of humanity continued to build the most incredible contraptions and machines in secret over the years one of the most useful machines was built by a leader of the resistance and over time this robot became not only a vital part of the resistance movement but also a loved part of its close family who created this robot how important was he to the members of the resistance and how does his story end here we explore in the law and story behind dog following the invasion of the combine empire the brutal alien force rounded up the population of planet earth and placed them into controlled territories based on the region of the planet they lived in trapped within these sectors the combine could then monitor control and even assimilate the weaker members of humanity into the armies to consolidate the holding of the planet within sector 17 of planet earth the combine constructed city 17 a new home for the population of this territory to be crammed into while most of humanity and vortigaunt had bowed down to the leadership of the combine empire at this point there were many who had not the select few would then go on to form a resistance against the combine in the hope that one day they could get their planet back and be free from the alien empire as a survivor of the black mesa incident and now the leader of this resistance dr eli vance had seen many things in his time he had been instrumental in the black mesa incident a mistake that had essentially begun a domino effect that had brought the combine to the planet years after their invasion dr vance had not only his fellow resistance members to care for but also his young daughter alex as her mother had not survived the incident eli cared for her alone in a terrifying world since eli acted as the leader of the resistance he needed to find a way to keep alex safe when he went out and scavenged materials protected the vulnerable and caused problems for the combine and so with his understanding of theoretical physics and knowledge of how to develop complex machinery eli decided to build alex a protector as the resistance went out into the wasteland they would come against the combines technology and equipment designed to monitor and keep humanity in line capable of defending themselves and shutting down these technologies eli and his team would then bring back these scraps to their resistance base and use them to adapt their own technologies and study the combine equipment to create an equal playing field for a potential future fight having salvaged many parts over time eli got to work on creating alex's protector using a combined city scanner as a headpiece to start with eli moved on to construct an aperture eye with the idea that when it focused in and out the robot could in a sense display a thought process and his state of emotion with the head developed eli moved on to the rest of the robot over time and through various stages piece by piece it grew in his designs eli chose the robot to physically resemble a pack animal to which he finished the initial construction of the robot to resemble a dog a creature that alex would likely feel more comfortable around moving forward he named the robot dog a simple name to pronounce for a not so simple machine now with the first version of dog physically complete alex would have a companion and friend to spend time with when her father left her to accomplish resistance missions as dog learned to navigate his surroundings his artificial intelligence became smarter with each interaction where his own personality and intuition emerged standing at only one metre tall this small robot would grow to become a great protector for alex and later aid the resistance greatly in their fight against the combine empire as time passed and alex grew up she took a keen interest in using salvaged combine materials to create her own contraptions just like her father over the years dog grew as she did with a stream of stolen and salvaged combine materials added to the scrapyard of black mesa east and with plenty of time on her hands alex took the many wires pipes metals and circuitry to improve dog using the toughest and strongest metals to construct arms and legs for dog he became quadripedal where he could use his arms and legs together to move around quickly and strike those that offered danger while his plating offered great protection against any threat with these adaptions he went from standing at a mere 1 meter tall to 2.5 meters as alex turned 24. during these hours of construction dog and alex's bond became deeper with each minute and although dog was a robot his feelings and protectiveness towards alex felt real alongside his visual enhancement dog's ability to communicate with those around him also improved after the installation of a sound box with the ability to make noises similar to that of a combine strider dog could now alert and communicate with alex and the resistance in a manner similar to a real dog in addition to these adjustments an antenna was also installed giving him the ability to detect and even boost local radio waves and signals for each feature added to dog he became a much more vital member of the resistance and their cores as eli continued to develop new technology to aid the resistance in their fight against the combine he explored zero point energy field technology having created a gravity gun he could easily manipulate objects in the area using this contraption and so eli thought it would be best to give dog his own variation constructing this technology onto dog's right hand this already combat efficient robot would now have the ability to manipulate the gravitational pull around him where he could pull and launch nearby items at ease a useful feature for when a threat refused to come into close proximity of his giant fists with dog's artificial intelligence having also adapted and learned over the years he gained a sense of self where a personality grew just like his body the more he learned about his surroundings and the combine the smarter he got where at one point the resistance described him as having a sixth sense when it came to an upcoming combine ambush when these rare occasions did occur he was noted to run off to prepare for and help those affected by it while these hunches appeared odd at first alex under the resistance grew to trust dog when these occurred in the likelihood that his intuition could save a life with this sixth sense dog also had the unique ability to find alex wherever she may be a perfect trait to have as her protector although dog still was classed as a pet and bodyguard of alex the traditional relationship of a dog and its master had long since gone and their relationship had developed into a true friendship regardless of their species completely capable of understanding those around him dog became an integral beloved part of the resistance in black mesa east he could lift the spirit of his friends by playing fetch and on occasion he even danced with strong trust and friendship between the two dog would do anything to protect alex and this would be extremely useful during the uprising on a standard day approximately 20 years after the combined initial invasion of planet earth dr gordon freeman appeared having become somewhat of a legend after the black mesa incident and now sudden reappearance gordon became a symbol for the resistance and a major enemy to the combine within black mesa east dog woke up one evening to be greeted by gordon and alex after the scientist had made his way to the resistance base after being introduced to gordon by alex doug also recognized gordon as the symbol of revolution if alex trusted this man so did he and so going forward he believed that gordon must be protected at any cost shortly after his arrival at the resistance base during a game of fetch where gordon learned how to use the gravity gun with dog the combine struck everything dog knew was about to change and although his new home would fall to this ambush he would rise to the occasion and aid the resistance to the best of his ability during this fight combine units swarmed the base searching for gordon with their strikes weakening the foundation of the base the structure slowly became unstable where some of the hallways and floors even buckled under the strain as gordon dog and alex rushed through the hallways to find eli one of them collapsed separating alex from dog and gordon with gordon's safety in mind alex asks stogg to get gordon out of the base following her orders dog leads gordon to a tunnel to ravenholm a whole town once held by the resistance although the tunnel had been sealed years before after an awful event dog has no trouble lifting the immense barrier using his immense strength giving gordon just enough time to escape into the haunted town to continue his journey with gordon safe dog returns to the fight to protect his home and ensure alex's safety unfortunately black mesa did fall and eli was captured luckily alex managed to make it out safely with this dog made his way to city 17 as alex headed to nova prospect an awful combine prison to save her father with alex on a mission dog successfully made it to city 17 where he waited within the secret lab of dr isaac kleiner another strong leader of the resistance simply waiting for alex's return after the destruction of nova prospect and the disappearance of alex and gordon dog waited as time passed dr kleiner started to lose hope of their survival after the explosion but for one whole week dogs stayed hidden away from the combine just waiting some say that his sixth sense gave him the insight that alex still lived while others believed he simply never lost hope regardless as the war between the resistance and the combine truly began again the teleporter within kleiner's lab activated once more and gordon and alex stepped out unscathed with the war within city 17 becoming more volatile by the second and with alex safe the group decided it best for gordon to go and help out barney a resistance member now under enemy fire deeper within the city to this alex stays with dr kleiner to help him find his pet head crab as dog and gordon enter the now brutal streets of city 17. now dog could show the combine exactly what he is capable of as the combine soldiers attack dog picks up a wrecked vehicle and launches it at them killing them instantly as gordon watches a combine armored personal carrier attempts to run down the robot but as a testament to the construction and artificial intelligence he easily stops the vehicle kills the passengers inside and then picks it up with ease to throw at the additional combine units attempting to control the situation now with the soldiers dead and dog having shown just how powerful he is the duo attempt to move forward and deeper into city 17 to help barney with a combined barricade blocking the street dog once again shows off his strength and opens it just enough for gordon to squeeze through as the combine continued to attempt to control this already volatile situation they bring in more units with the help of a combined dropship to this and with gordon's safety as a main priority dog once again springs into action and attacks the giant creature in an attempt to survive this encounter with the robot the dropship launches into the sky taking dog with it leaving gordon to continue his journey alone having survived the ascent into the sky and battle with the drop ship dog continues with his mission and makes his way to barney as the battle of city 17 commences and the resistance moves closer to the citadel alex is captured by the combine thanks to his intuition dog believes that she had been taken to the citadel and that he must get to her taking down everything and anyone that would get in his way discovering barney they make their way through the plaza towards the giant structure and to later reunite with gordon who had rallied up many resistance members along his path with another combine barrier in their way once again dog uses his incredible strength to lift a small portion of the barrier giving gordon access to the tunnel below while dog could not continue any further gordon had proven his worth at this point in surviving unwinnable situations and so dog left the fate of alex in the scientists hands over the following hours the dark fusion reactor within the citadel becomes unstable after an altercation at the top with this a now war-torn city 17 begins an evacuation in anticipation for the inevitable explosion that will completely annihilate the city and its surroundings during the initial explosion on top of the citadel both alex and gordon had found themselves teleported by powerful beings to the base of the structure out of danger waking first alex finds dog and together they search through the ruins of city 17 to find gordon before even thinking about leaving themselves after dog finds gordon under a pile of rubble alex contacts eli and isaac to update them on the dire situation within the city but with the scientists now way out in the outlands the signal struggles to relay any information and so alex uses dog's antenna to gain a better signal following this conversation alex and gordon decide to re-enter the citadel in an attempt to slow down its destruction so that more refugees can leave the city but without a traditional entrance into the structure they improvise away using an idea formed by dog after finding an old car dog calculates that if alex and gordon were to enter the vehicle he could successfully throw them across the ravine into a small entrance of the citadel trusting dog's calculation but still with a little hesitation alex trusts the robot to safely get her over the ravine into the citadel and going with this trust he successfully launches the duo over from here dog wanders the wasteland making his way towards the white forest resistance base where the rest of the resistance had traveled too on his way there and with his main priority to keep alex safe he discovers gordon and alex just in time as they wake up a fallen strider with a battle roar dog charges at the creature and prepares for battle in a brutal fight dog jumps onto the strider attempting to break into its shell as he avoids the attacks of its deadly feet with the many falls strikes and rolls dog eventually breaks through into its brain and pulls it out killing it although he had survived this deadly altercation the strain and damage he had endured from the strider had left him weak where he after falling to the ground after victory struggled to get back up running to his side alex begs dog to get back up and hugs him their bond showing more than just a dog and its master this bond showing love in response to this and with his remaining strength he hugs her back just showing his durability and need to protect his ward regaining his strength dog stands up and now operating back at full power he opens a gate to allow gordon and alex's car through to the final stretch of land to the white forest resistance base with such a short amount of land left dog once again shows off his playful side where he races their car to the base and whether he won this race is down to the recollection of who tells this story as time passed and the resistance worked together to finish off a rocket designed to close the forming super portal within the ruins of city 17. dog waited until finally the rocket was ready to fire from the courtyard of the resistance stronghold dog alex eli and gordon watch as the rocket hits the forming super portal and closes it giving humanity a chance to stop their oppressors although there should have been a momentous occasion dog detects something a little off and so to investigate he runs off ahead of alex gordon and eli over the next few minutes the trio enter the hangar and travel to the bottom floor and then combine advisors attack using their powerful telekinetic abilities they pin alex and gordon to a wall of the hunger and pull eli towards them completely helpless they watch in horror as one of the advisors murders eli although his intuition had been accurate to a degree it had not been enough to save eli's life but dog could save alex and gordon's as the advisor attempts to take alex dog jumps from the roof and strikes the creature severely injuring it saving alex's life with this he chases off the second advisor leaving only himself and the survivors in the hangar looking back dog watches as alex mourns her father helpless unable to protect her from the sadness she must be feeling a pain he could not protect her from in another timeline or adjustment to the current timeline dog watches as a beam of green energy comes from nowhere and strikes down the combine advisor holding eli saving his life as the advisor falls and the other creature retreats dog eli and gordon watch as alex vanishes with a hunch of who had taken alex eli takes a crowbar from dog and tells gordon that they have work to do now without his charge dog would do anything in his power to help gordon find alex and save her from whatever fate she had found herself in constructed by the resistance to protect the resistance leader's child dog became an integral much loved and major part of the resistance movement against the combine empire without him it is likely that the resistance would not have performed as well as they did with his main goal of safety of alex in mind he also saved the life of dr gordon freeman on multiple occasions keeping the symbol of revolution alive to fight another day to some he is merely wires and parts but to others he is his own person and a strong member of the resistance although his story is far from finished what we do know is that he will do anything to save alex and the other members of his resistance family now there is not much to cover in terms of behind the scenes content the main interesting feature i could find is that during the development stage eli owned dog at this point eli was called eli maxwell and alex would have owned an alien called skitch in other places she is called snitch for the purpose of this section i will continue to call her sketch unfortunately not a lot is known about sketch as she did not make it past the concept stage during the first year of development i love the dog that we received but after finding these images of sketch it is absolutely a shame that we did not get both dog is loveable but sketch looks amazing for some reason valve decided that sketch and dog should be combined into one entity and therefore dog became alex's protector and pet this could have added so much law to the world where did sketch come from was she from zen or another place that had passed the border world just like racex had anyway sketch was planned to have been met for the first time during the cut air exchange part of the game again as i said not much is known about this alien but i love her design she did merge with dog to create the brutal lovable protector we got in the commercial game from this image it is nice to see the main three characters eli gordon and alex in their concept forms with sketch at the front held by alex's leash and a silhouette of a much differently shaped dog in the background as dog became alex's protector and his role was solidified within the game it does appear that valve had a few design ideas for him personally i prefer what we have now but with these we can see here that his head was to be constructed from the unused combat the combo being the predecessor to the city scanner which was then used for dog's head he also has a wide range of colors here too in terms of design i feel that i do need to mention his updated design in half-life alex his best design so far much cleaner and darker i mean look out the difference not a complete change but a nice upgrade to the half-life 2 model dog is a great example of what can happen when a studio wants to create something new something memorable and something with meaning when dog fell after fighting the strider i was genuinely sad i had just like many others grown an attachment to the robot and just waited for him to get back up his whines and the odd noises he makes really make him feel more than just a robot he has emotions and i find it hard to believe that anyone did not have a connection with him during their play through of the games i absolutely did he wasn't human but his writing made his personality flow through i know i say this about every character i cover in the half-life series but again here's one of my favorites dog is a great part of my experience with half-life and i'm sure he was a part of yours too i'm hopeful that if we do receive a sequel to half-life alex doug will be there throughout the journey to help find alex and get her back from the g-man this was the law and story behind our favorite robot dog if you enjoyed this episode i would
