all right mud lovers what an amazing sight that is that's a drain canal i'm in central london that's victoria park just over there and this is the regents canal we've been invited along by the canal and river trust to help clean up some of this river we're going to take out the plastics in any metal work and hopefully there'll be a few good finds to find as well so without further ado let's get some luck in the muck [Music] a big field crew here today didn't know so popular lovely old barge there being used as a rubbish dump the regents canal was first used in 1816 and was designed to bring in bulky cargo from the thames at limehouse such as coal to supply the numerous gas works eventually the round network grew and the canals fell out of favor despite a brief swansong during world war one and world war ii it is now used mostly by leisure boats here we are is the uh first stretch of canal the cass is liking what you're seeing [Music] all right my lovers today i'm with iona from the canal and river trust and we are doing some litter picking today we pick up all sorts of stuff that's been dropped in the past uh it's an organized event we've got a nice crew of us today and ironer can you tell us a bit more about the canal river trust okay so the canal and river trust as our name would suggest we work around the canals and rivers this patch is in the central area so we're on the hartford union attached to the regents canal and the river lee this canal has been drained to do some scheduled maintenance to the walls just to reinforce them and make sure they are safe and it's provided us with a unique opportunity to head on to the bottom and clean up some of the stuff has been lost over the years so there we go guys so let's see what we can find in the clouds [Music] the stretch we are in today is the hartford union canal and was built in 1830 as a link between the regents canal and the river lee but it was a commercial failure it cost too much and didn't claw back enough in tolls and was taken over by the grand union canal company today both canals are looked after by the canal and river trust who have invited us down today and if you come across any shops just like me or one of my colleagues we will deal with it don't uh try and pick them up or handle them yourselves okay cuffs has just found a coin not even down there yet there we go probably a 10p but still [Music] i'm just gonna film you struggling mike you're right we just got down and mike's already sinking literally whereas i float on the mud jacob he's actually quiet you're right yeah just twist your foot twist your foot smells lovely mike it smells like pond in probably the worst spot mike i found you i've got your tempe mike yeah i'll make you sure put your put your arm on my knee all right put your hand on my knee that's it here we go well you're right yeah oh drama anybody just started yeah hold that for 10p [Laughter] all right can't find a 10p now i might not go back over [Music] first piece of litter [Music] [Music] modern [Music] very close to me [Music] very nice little tea light elephant tea light yeah pretty good nick as well yeah but we came off the maximum bow see the buddha over the other side as well look at the other side of the bank there's a buddha underneath there i'd love to take that home that's awesome this is definitely the coolest thing that's come out let's pray for good finds i'll just do this a little bit it's like an old um oh birdcage how cool is that hey cuffs victorian bird cage let's get out put some uh crabs in there we found that someone up there uh yeah that young lad just there oh nice little horse shoe yeah and i only told you there's a bit of a story between the connection between the horses and the canals so the history of horses and canals starts in the industrial revolution and what happened is canal boats before they had engines they were powered by horses that would be tethered to the boats and walk down the towpath and that's why we have a lot of old buildings and such called the stables by canals because that's where the horses will be put to to rest or to stay overnight now a fun fact is the one challenge caused was that the horses couldn't go through tunnels so you had people who would walk boats through tunnels so essentially they would unhitch the horses and they would lie on top of the boat or be pressed against the side of the boat and use their feet to just walk the boat through i've seen that before yeah that's really cool yeah um and they even used to there are some sites if you look at the towpath while many have been filled in you can see areas where the towpath would have dipped slightly into the canal and that's if a horse had fallen in it would allow them to get back out oh wow that's really cool great little facts so this could be 200 years old oh easily i'll fall right the regents is 200 years old oh there we go any other fines been made down the end uh we've got a broken ipad and a phone a samsung tablet down there and a wallet oh nothing in the wallet so this is quite a fun time please thank you that's awesome yeah nice that's so cool i know exactly it's a great find in there one of those brass yes i think so it is clean up lovely yeah and you go from lovely to the absolute grotesque i can't see a name on it i hear the good [ __ ] venus venus my god you should have seen us [Music] do the time six bells bring out your dead [Music] it's a lovely ring too isn't it [Music] up [Music] [Music] go on [Music] nice [Music] thank you this is my 1960s 70s shopping basket complete with milk bottles from the same era that's a nice old bucket huh dan's found a grappling hook it's gonna untangle it and it should be good for looking at big lumps of iron like that if he's a good aim oh that's a good shot to me oh what a star oh that's the trouble in it end up catching yourself if you're not careful do you want to win a prize if you get it yeah hey cod bottle is it broken i think i found a broken cupboard we're going to check that in a second it's a good shot oh look at that oh that's quite an old virus quite vintage by the look of the handlebars that's nice yes oh that's awesome that's pretty cool though well done look at that sometimes they got the little um shield still on the front of the uh oh yeah [Applause] yeah we'll have probably there oh it's all gone a little rusted find out the maker but i think it's all gone huh it's a local maker basically a great spot it's like it says sue prima you put it near it we can find some light in the shed i'm sure oh yeah baity that's a nice lemonade bottle obviously uh been smashed so they could get the marble that's nice i think it says supreme on the side there cool we'll keep that one in the concrete that's right it's going to come out i think we could chip that off yeah this will come out the cuffs have spotted this a little uh stoneware hopefully we can uh well the top's gone oh there is this is archaeology there you go oh whites is it yeah yeah it's well in there got the concrete that if we're going to get that out with the concrete no i think that's i think that's going to stay there for another generation never mind they still little bit behind for the next if you had it if it was a rare one we'd probably make more of an effort but these ones are fairly common probably worth about five quid if you was to buy in a antique shop online it's like a probably three iron there he goes a sandwich cleveland it's a sandwich do you know what it's a sandwich and we're just about to eat our sandwiches i'll do you mike we have a sandwich whilst eating your sandwiches you do not now [Music] there's going to be a base to it something would be enrolled on that complete with a support sock [Music] nice nice bit of cast iron cast iron rollers it may look like i'm just stood up here filming everyone there's not a hole and i am just for now otherwise we're going to miss it all someone's got a field with this and it's got to be me i'm getting stuck in here though it's a it's a flat screen telly this is like a really bad version of bullseye but if you do win the boat run a canal that's a really good find yeah you've got fish francis you was just about to leave and what did you find uh i found a bb gun i think i don't know it's not a real man it's not real nowhere it looked real cause it was like that was all in there [Music] don't you think you're ever going to clear all this stuff do what we can well there is a little lantern nothing's particularly old well they could be challenges i don't want to take anything away today so uh just bin this one plus it's very very rusted cool little fine though let's put in the rubbish eh so there are a few older fires knocking around so this is an old um old jam jar 1920s sadly broken i don't think that's going to do any real damage sitting there so that'll probably be right as it's not plastic and this i'm not sure what that is might be a little desk ink again sadly broken i thought was a pot lead at first the teapot lead well marcus find a world war one helmet you sure it's not told us you sure he's not taught us awesome we'll have a close up look at that later i don't think he dare he doesn't want to mess up his lovely hair [Music] well maybe they'll let you borrow it and then or maybe they can borrow and give it back to you yeah all these lovely houses backing onto the canal there's another little pot but sadly it's broken just there all right lanyard over there don't sink i want it it's his name brendan something who's a volunteer oh what can river trust uh what's outward i did if found you found please call this number five pound reward that'd be nice that seems the right thing to do maybe you won't want that bill you might want the card yeah i think it makes them what is that it's like a looks like a uh sewing machine yeah this is a lock collar and that goes around the post of the lock and it's the brace for the gate nice yeah oh cool i might bring that back to the stable uh yeah we'll bring that we'll put that in the pile of interesting stuff show me the pile of interesting stuff yes um uh heritage pile it's the part of anything heritage and now we can look at the interesting pile of heritage things that we uh we're gonna have a mull over and see if there's anything called now is that an old collar from a lot yeah a bottle from the 60s a horseshoe and a world war ii helmet yes cuffs you can talk about your helmet [Music] yeah if it's like airaid one it could be it's funny that's the point of the day and it's even got the spring is a bit it's even got some of the uh insides left so there's leather in there as well that's all that foamy leather [Music] that's awesome sometimes you've got to make this marker they in the inside but i think any world war one or world war ii experts out there that would like to be able to help identify the age of this feel free to comment below [Music] that was day one we'll come back tomorrow and do it again this time with the girls okay well it's day two of the river cleanup we had a spectacular day yesterday loads of amazing things came up and we had a good time in the process let's see what today unfolds so nick you excited about going down onto the muddy depths of the canal today yeah but i'm very very excited yes i am you know what we'll find i know i can't think of anything else i'd rather be doing to see what treasures lie therein so we are going to be doing this section of the canal here [Applause] that's pretty good you give me gloves get down there all right i'm just trying out my wages you know i want to make the most of them get my money's worth are they working yeah they're brilliant yeah it'd be a terrible time to find out nice stoneware bottle here brilliant yeah it's james cox of bethnal green awesome years and years and years of rubbish years of detritus and i'm not likely i don't think to find any clay pipes in here [Applause] what's this what's this oh it's a little guitar oh sound a little guitar [Music] little guitar a little broken guitar [Music] that's the method right there just belly crawl all the [Music] i'm way myself out [Music] all right [Music] oh [Music] oh yes excellent lucky me well it's beautiful daily down here in the drank now [Music] what could be better getting up to your knees in mud clearing things up looking for anything cool in the process well we just found a bag we're gonna rake it out and see if there's anything in it so we have the bag out i'm gonna glove up see if there's anything in it probably just a school bag uh you never know might be full of coins from the heist simon's being hopeful here oh that's insane the main section is empty looking that mud oh empty oh here we go empty bag but one less bit of crap in the canal shots uh nice pepsi bowl just been thrown up we must be bastard i think you're right right there's a big basket full of stinky rubbish up to the guys to get rid of it cool just made it there just made it and then we get the next one let's fill this one up something else for you call for you hello mom i'm busy right now i'll call you back later mum's eh simon's got the big flat screen tv outlook i wonder if it's got um canal plus on it he didn't get my french joke did he to be fair to nick it was quite a funny joke but i didn't hear you and i didn't know that canal plus was a french tv channel hi hello well don't tell nick but i found a bit of pipe stem so i'm beating nick today on the pipe tally and maybe there'll be a bowl around here somewhere but who knows i find a tiny bit and i threw it away i'm the only one who's found it oh there we go i know there might be more around here it's quite interesting this area because it's been dredged so they can do repairs to the walls the whole reason why it's been drained really because they can do repairs so there might be something within all these dredgings you never know you never know exactly because it's a lock i guess people will be standing on the side maybe dropping stuff yeah i've had a look around there sadly there's not a lot i've got something very special i've got a question that's i just found that and chugged it back oh wow it's so carried around for about five minutes so i thought come on anna i have the chances of you picking that out though so much two around here i don't know i'm gonna put it on my tree are you good for you it's the ultimate up cycle right there there we go it's like a little um safety box there probably got nothing in it but sometimes they take the valuables and leave all the costume jewelry we can only hope that there's something inside i might take over to the side and crack it open a bit deep around here here's the sci finds what's he got oh love you you've got to share it with me oh look it's probably just full of mud just like the bag but sometimes if it's been stolen they'll take anything valuable potentially leave them behind like costume jewellery yeah something like that or maybe some identification or something so should we see what's inside it or leave it yeah let's see here i love your eternally positive attitude simon come on treasure what's gonna be in the [Music] box oh is there anything in there it's like another layer yeah oh that's a tray is it a chain mommy this is um slicing your hand open territories nothing there so far what does it look like like little handles yeah almost does a little slide out section well not this time but there's like another layer underneath it there's a box in a box see there's like that's not the bottom oh yeah okay like cemented in mud i don't think you're gonna that's right i'm not screwed rather look okay pipe no oh you got the tray out anything in there yeah oh no what is it [Music] yeah so just inside was a couple of bulldog clips look they would have held probably some paperwork perhaps a roll of money such inconsiderate thieves aren't they okay [Laughter] by removing rubbish from the canal it's a lovely bike uh actually that might belong in your studio oh i think it does you can fit him in there he hasn't got any hair but uh maybe a little hat oh he'll be so happy in the thames toys orphanage here we go hope he has a happy happy life he can be a canal cousin yes sir i've just found a broken new offering it's a broken hindu offering that's nice no head on him oh a padlock and a coin should be a penny oh you got a coin let's see 5p 5p okay well that's still 5p you got it mike yeah with love valentine's day has come late yeah well we'll take it out there we'll open it up yeah should have that when it's a bit dryer put your pocket i'll lose it oh [Music] okay [Music] not just me but there's a whole team of us so look at all this that simon has pulled out of the canal welcome does simon you've done a grand job there thank you yeah it's nice to give something back in it to uh to help the environment we do take a lot of stuff out the thames you know historically stuff but it's nice to you know take stuff out which has actually helped the environment so yeah feel good and help the rivers help the rivers well done i keep finding monkeys i think i i think it's a sign that's a gorilla do you remember i found a monkey the other day yeah so yeah that beach and i also found the stuffed monkey he's got whimsy too oh wow polar bear hello they found at the same little school they were at the same time maybe someone's uh i think their friends collection yeah they were friends now they're going to be separated they can have playdates oh wow that's awesome i like i think your 60s that's um last one anna danger you see something on the foreshore from time to time oh we have another we have a matching pair we've got a matching tree action trio oh what a beautiful trio [Laughter] down there dangerous your middle name i love that sausage bottle possibly yeah definitely have a later later version but definitely what about that sort of bottling stopper in sorry hold on someone's that's weird is that a screw through his nose oh yeah it's definitely been voodooed oh yeah today you're gonna take it i'm gonna put it in the air i'm not taking it home no toy sanctuary sorry she'll bully all the toys oh i'm supposed to say maggie was there one in toy story that was yeah there was that yeah one of the ones that belong to that horrible little boy next door look sorry oh yeah wow that's gorgeous oh how frustrated james cox and so where does it say bethnal green it says bethnal green of course it does yeah bethnal green fantastic that's a super fine neat well done quite cool old coal bucket this uh this was found the other day uh it's a sword of some description it's got a cool little bit on the handle so if anybody's got any ideas we don't know if it's well it's definitely got some age to it probably too long to be a bayonet but it's interesting now that would have gone around the wooden handle maybe if he was to grind that down or clean that carefully you'd get a maker's mark but it's interesting isn't it yeah probably it might be a sword officer sword yeah interesting any experts out there leave a comment below let us know what we found [Music] so [Music] so [Music] you
