so this is Wiley he's a to Maskin dog which is essentially a husky or a shepherd type dog he is a double coated breed which means he has two layers of coat the soft fuzzy undercoat down here and then these top black guard coats you can see he is shedding profusely so I'm gonna show you how a groomer would brush out your dog in the salon without bathing them [Applause] [Music] wilee and i are gonna be showing you how we line brush and line brush means going through each line of the coat and gently brushing away the undercoat that's sticking out this gets rid of a lot of dead coat without having to bathe and blow-dry your dog or paying for an expensive groom the three tools I'm going to be using here we have a pin brush this is the Chris Christensen breezy brush the pad is the firm one because I find it works best for this guy's tough coat next we have the Safari undercoat rake this can be ordered on Amazon it's an excellent undercoat rake for thicker double coated breeds like Wiley and finally we have our Greyhound comb these can again be purchased on Amazon the Safari ones are excellent as are the andis ones this is my favorite grooming spray this is the canine competition nano mist spray you can pretty much use any brushing spray meant for dog but tropiclean is most often found at your average pet store yeah okay so with Wiley he is dry he is shedding like crazy so we are ready to go so what I'm gonna start out by doing is just dampening his code a little bit with the brushing spray of your choice doesn't really matter which one and he isn't work fine then I'm just gonna kind of give it a little bit of a fluff with my hand and make sure it's all inside the coat I'm gonna take my undercoat rake first and I'm just gently going to go through the coat falling the way the hair grows and this will help remove a lot of coat before you even start getting to the line brushing now what we're gonna do is start the wine brushing so I'm gonna start with his hip and his bum here this is where a lot of the big fluffy double coats shed a lot of coat so we're gonna give it a little bit of a spritz and what I'm gonna do is hold all this hair up with my hand take my pin brush and just gently start brushing down layers of coat and anytime we get to a drier spot just give it a little bit of a spritz once we finish with the pin brush and the undercoat rake we go through with a fine-tooth comb I'm gonna start at the wider end and I'm just going to do the same thing I did with with the pin brush and if I hit any snarls I go back and make sure just to gently brush it because you don't want to be tearing out a coat and if your colors getting dry just give it another spritz so when I hit these snags here I can see that there's undercoat still left in so I switch back to the wider portion of my comb and give it a few more brushes before I go back with the fine toothed section so now we have his bum all combed out with the comb and we're gonna move further forward on his body I'm gonna ask him to sit sit Twila good boy and so I start again with the pin brush we'll just go through so as I'm brushing I'm just letting layers of hair falls down back into the brush and then brushing it again a little bit dry so this has all been brushed out with the pin brush so now we're good to go ahead with the wider tooth comb and again just going through and the way I'm holding my comb I'm holding it between two fingers so if somebody came up behind me and hit the end of my comb it would fall out of my hands and that's how you know you're holding it right you shouldn't be jamming it in and yanking on the skin cuz that's not comfortable for your dog and it's not comfortable for you so hold it between the two or three fingers and just gently go through you can see we have some static so again a little bit of a spritz good boy you're doing so good and then finally we'll go through with a fine-toothed portion girl act Italy so how you know you're done brushing a certain area is when you comb through you should only get about 10 to 20 hairs you shouldn't have tons of hair coming out but don't brush until nothing's coming out so this area right here on a lot of double coated breeds doesn't get a lot of attention paid to it but it gets very thick and very packed with coat it's also a little bit of a more sensitive area so when you are brushing just be careful and don't pull or anything but you can see how much coach is coming out of this just little area here so you can see how just with an undercoat rake a comb a pin brush and some spray you can really make a huge dent in your dog shedding all it takes is a little bit of elbow grease and some good tools [Applause] [Music]
