welcome to my kitchen I'm Claire a 91 years old today we are making meals from the Depression [Music] they were making pasta with peace it's a very simple dish but it's very tasty and it's good for you now I'm going to peel a potato I don't know where it came from my mother used to make it I guess they had it at her house before she was married it's not expensive and it's nourishing so that's the only thing I could tell you about it take a potato and dice it it take some onion now I'm gonna dice the onion in the pan with the potatoes I ate pasta with B since I was a little girl and then during this depression we ate a lot of it because off we ate is pasta most of the time with a little vegetable and that was our meal the depression was bad I got these two all chopped up and I'm gonna take olive oil a little olive oil in the pan after I put the olive oil in with the potatoes and the onions I'm gonna fry them for a while till they get a little softer watching they're my food now I'm going to open a can of peas when the potatoes are rosy then we'll put in the piece and that will be yes the more potatoes during the Depression and pasta but we survived it's hard what we're gonna eat tonight pasta with garlic what are we gonna eat - like pasta with peas what are the races I spot the woods is that's all we did a pasta with a vegetable go into peace now now I'm going to put some more mana enough to cook the pasta I have to wait till this boil and then I'll put the pasta in a real soft pepper then you simmer it until the pastas cook during the Depression the bootleggers came house the house to rent our garages to make whiskey of course our neighbors one of our neighbors said yes so that we had smelled whiskey all day long and my father would not rest and he says no I don't I'm not renting my garage to anybody and my uncle was living next door to us and he didn't rent it either but the other side they had barrels and whiskey brewing all the time the smell of yeast was all over the town so then when they decided to get rid of them they broke the barrels came with hatchets and chopped there's whiskey running all over the town that's true I'm putting the pasta in now that's gonna cook with the peas when the pastas cooked it's ready to eat you let this boil or we could just put a cover on it'll cook with me what's this heat so that's what we'll do turn it off in the depression we would turn off the gas and let it cook by its own heat so we would say gasps anything to save anything it's done but it lacks something so we decided to put a little tomato salsa my mother would make it with tomato sauce sometimes such time just playing without the sauce and a little more salt and pepper mmm it's good I made the pasta with beans just like we used to make during the Depression it's peas and potatoes and pasta and it's delicious oh then you put cheese in grated cheese that's it you have a meal [Music]
