Great Depression Cooking - Depression Breakfast

welcome to my kitchen I'm Claire I'm 93 years old and today we are making Mir from the depression [Music] good morning this morning we're making the depression breakfast the first thing we're gonna make is the sugar cookies measure out its required of a cup of sugar put it in the bowl yeah you be the three eggs beat the eggs and then you mix it with this sugar sugar flour and eggs mixing though the sugar and the eggs so you'll beat the eggs we need to take up and a half of flour in here mixing it the flour and the eggs mix it until you don't see any flour it's all incorporated to make it like you know dough think I need more flour put in a pinch of salt breakfast we had bread and bread and butter and coffee we should dip our bread in the coffee and even thought that was great but on Sundays we'd have cookies which was a big treat we didn't have cookies until Sunday I added about another cup and a half of flour to make no dryer yeah I had to make it thicker be generous with the flour on the board so they don't stick don't use grease on the pants because the don't got enough grease really I rolled them and I cut them and put them in pants now we're gonna bake them 350 degrees how my mother made coffee and that's what we had fresh ground coffee and we'd hear my mother downstairs grinding the coffee so it was time to get up times were different in those days but now when I think of it they were interesting the bottom layer I put it on top and put another pan is we're gonna make coffee in an old depression pot real old-fashioned way to make it first you have to boil the water it puts a coffee in between there's a little container you put the water in the next container and it drips and goes through the bottom of the coffee and it makes your coffee sometimes I like to look at old pictures see how we looked old man I probably didn't have any cheese my mother is the skin phonsavan bias right the clothes and everything I know how old it is the bee Republic this is a whole bunch of us that went to camp together that's my cousin and this is her friends that's me we went to Lake Geneva for a vacation and this girl came with us and we used to eat home you know make meal and then she going the restaurant and he's just we don't fit her and though one day we found her there easy I'm sorry but you guys don't eat that much and I'm ashamed in front of you so she's to go over there and eat after he home this is her yeah she's I said chunky my mom used to put a lot of milk you don't want to say I'm out of coffee put a drop of coffee most milk but we were happy gonna open the can of evaporated milk that's what we had that's strong enough and Sunday we would have wafer cookies that was a big treat and then we topped them my brother and I one for you one for me this was a 1 left or we split it in half it had to be even now I'm gonna pour some condensed milk that we used to have for our coffee cake ready for having our coffee and cookies that we just made coffee's nice and strong you made of depression flexus that's Sunday because we never had cookies out of the weekday just on Sunday thank you very much for watching [Music] you

My Great Grandmother cooked depression meals for me one day and told me stories from that period of time. I never knew that California charged $50.00 to enter the State from those fleeing the dust bowl and that people lined up on the sides of the road to attack them with bats, planks, and threw stones at them. Food was pretty horrible and was unhealthy.
