and be honest with you still nobody knows who's left in afghanistan so we've got senator kevin cramer of north dakota kind enough to come on uh he was in the hearing so senator we appreciate it uh very very much so as as i'm reading this i mean you tell me being in there millie and mackenzie basically say we wanted 2500 troops to remain they gave that advice to the president and the president i don't know he tells stephanopoulos um he never heard that advice i mean it's just kind of not a good story sir well you would think it's not larry thanks for having me i just came by the way from the from the classified briefing that followed the two sessions of open hearings so we're still learning about some details but with regard to to that number of 2500 or residual troops um that was consistent with with what general scottie miller told the committee in a classified briefing a couple of weeks ago so you know you've got now three four-star generals basically saying no it was not unanimous now they quibble over certain dates you know on august 25th they said it wouldn't be wise to stay beyond august 31st because of the the troop you know risk analysis well sure six days before you know the date i understand that but this is not a this was not a six week or a six day decision this was a multi-month uh really last year decision why do you think president biden denied it on one of the sunday talk shows or whatever it was you know larry it's hard to explain except that whenever i'm asked about what's in his head i i have a hard time you know analyzing it either there's a couple things one of the possibilities is that joe biden doesn't really know what's going on i think that's a very you know high possibility that he sort of sees the world the way he wishes it were instead of the way it really is he remembers things the way he wants to remember them rather than the way they really happened i think that's that's part of it i think the other part of it is he has very little regard for the truth he thinks that whatever's coming out of his mouth at any given time is the truth and should be taken as the truth it's very problematic and frankly it's quite chaotic and and it's also demeaning frankly to our troops who deserve a lot better um senator kramer also i hear the generals had advised um president biden that al qaeda was a problem a continuing an ongoing problem and uh president biden at several points said no al-qaida's not a problem anymore so they gave him more advice and he rejected the advice or didn't remember the advice or something yeah so really interesting point because you have a number of agencies or at least a couple obviously in the one hand you have the military on the other hand you have our intelligence agencies they're not always on the exact same page it's clear that isis k is our main concern even more so than the taliban at least the concern of the the generals when it comes to al qaeda um they're not quite as well reconstituted as they will be i don't think there's any question i thought i thought general mckenzie made one very profound statement and i called him on it in the second session and that was he said um you know we basically we're there's great certainty that isis k intends to attack the united states on our homeland now i don't know about you but that that sense shutters i mean with certainty they're convinced that isis k intends to attack our homeland now guess what that's what prompted my my follow-up question to him and that was okay but remember that 20 years ago on september 11th those terrorists came here with visas and now 20 years later we have an immigration policy that expands every possible avenue for people legally and illegally to come into the country not the least of which of course is at our open southern border so you know they don't have intercontinental ballistic missiles they don't have a navy they don't have an air force what they have is a is a lax immigration policy united states of america so if they want to attack us the only way for them to do it is to come here and unfortunately this president has made it really easy for people to come here but um sec def austin apparently i think it was he who said there are 4 000 americans left or slightly under 4 000 the number we had been hearing from the administration prior to this was a hundred or so that's a big spread 104 thousand is that right does anybody really know and does that include our friends and you know senator kramer let me just ask i don't mean to have a long-winded question but what about these 50 or 60 000 refugees who are here who are they and where are they going so so they kept saying and they keep bragging about the fact that this was the greatest airlift in them you know in history 124 000 refugees the problem larry is they basically landed the planes open the doors and as many people as could fill it up you know they shut the door and then they come to the united states now we have we have refugees in at some of our military installations committing crimes against children crimes against women assault of female military personnel so yeah where's the vetting in the meantime we leave at least hundreds of americans and thousands of afghan partners behind that have the credentials to have gotten on one of those airplanes so again it was chaos it was unmitigated disaster debacle it was not an extraordinary success unless you're just going by the numbers as opposed to the right numbers the right people well nobody likes to criticize the u.s military it's a great institution without question you know we always thank the soldiers men and women uh for their service and that includes me but i'm just saying this operation will not go down in history as a fabulously successful operation and i think attempts by the military or the civilian leaders to paint it as successful is quite wrong-headed it's very problematic larry and i think it's sending the wrong message i used the illustration from world war one where a german officer said of the of the british and the french french had never seen such lions being led by such lambs and that's a little bit how i feel we're looking right now and i i think somebody needs to step up and and um you know sort of set the record straight and then have the have the courage to stand up on principle rather than just defend a president who's made a horrible decision and frankly one decision after the other senator kremer last question sir appreciate your time as always um apparently general milley said to the hearing today under oath that all the national security people this was still the trump administration knew of these phone calls uh to the chinese generals one one general general lee i guess his name was their top guy right uh one a few days before the election and then the second one was i think a day after january 6th or january 7th um my intel kevin kramer you know i was there um i do that is not the case i mean i i have much admiration for general milley's service right i have some puzzlement over his behavior in the last six months frankly but in general you know i think he's a remarkable man but i can tell you i mean i'm not going to name names it's not my role here but i can tell you the senior national security people you know dod national security council president trump did not know he was calling the chinese general i'm sorry they didn't know well general miller implied or stated that that the actual secretary of defense at the time of the first call mark esper was actually that they actually con talked about the call prior to making the call and collaborated on the call and the same with the acting secretary on the second one and so that's why we've asked for documentation to demonstrate all that who all was on the call um you know what about the readout because he said he provided a readout of the call that they ran by his his advisors all of that but i think senator rick scott asked the most pertinent question why in sam hill are you talking to bob woodward while he's writing a salacious book about the previous president while you're the sitting chairman of the joint chiefs of staff it makes zero sense and it it raises great concern about his judgment in talking to the media especially a book writer we're not talking about what's going on today or tomorrow or plans for protecting america you're talking about the previous president and uh and talking to him about a book not just not just an article for tomorrow's washington post the rumor mill center is that because of these unauthorized calls if they were an author i mean chris miller who was the acting sector has said publicly that he never consulted with millie and i can tell you some other national security officials who would give you the same view i don't feel like putting them out there today but i'm just saying i know something about this but let me ask you this the rumor mill is saying that the byte administration is going to throw millie under the bus uh force him to retire or fire him and then they have some other people in mind uh for that position you hear anything like that i've not heard any of those rumors but it wouldn't surprise me at all larry mark millie's the obvious one to take the fall for them he wasn't his pick in the first place he was president trump's pick and uh and it makes perfect sense the only reason i believe that they haven't done to this point with somebody is because to throw somebody under the bus would imply that they made a mistake instead of instead of executing an extraordinary evacuation that was historical so their problem is you can't brag about it on the one hand and then fire somebody for it on the other hand so i think they've got themselves in a box this is why it's best to be transparent and straight up from the very first day and you wouldn't get yourself entangled in these rhetorical messes that is a very important point you just made sir very important with your once once in a while i hit one yeah you know with that i was going to say your midwest or upper midwest plain speaking logic i think kevin kramer you just nailed it thank you sir i appreciate it thank you always a pleasure
