The ironic part of this scene is that while Will does have a point, he HIMSELF is doing the same -- just regurgitating what he read in a book, demonstrating KNOWLEDGE but not WISDOM. All he shows is that he's read MORE books than this grad student. Will's extensive reading is established early on in the film when we see a stack of 20 or so books in his bedroom that he's flipping through at a page a second. If he has any original thoughts on this topic, he certainly doesn't provide them here. And why should he? Relying on what he's read has been more than enough for Will to get through life thus far -- he's certainly more well read than his Southie mates, and he reads fast enough to even match the repertoire of a Harvard grad student. But getting Will to actually apply himself BEYOND this is actually part of the point of the movie.

Will tries the same trick with the shrinks he meets in the movie. He tells the one psychologist he read his book and has thus concluded he's gay. When he's in Sean (Robin William's) office, he asks him if he actually read all the books there. Sean asks Will in turn if he's read them all and Will has to admit he hasn't. Then he asks Will about a different set of books and Will very quickly and defensively claims, oh, of course, he's read those. What did you think, Sean asks? Will retreats and claims he's not there to make a book report -- because he's probably not read those, either. He tells Sean that since they are Sean's books he should read them -- and Sean says he has. Will is now back on his heels. Sean is more well read than he is, at least on the books in question. Determined to re-assert his mental dominance, he then claims Sean's books are the wrong books and he should be reading, for example, Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." Sean asks Will what about Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" and Will avoids the question again -- another book he hasn't read, so again he can't go toe-to-toe with Sean on the topic.

Later on Sean illuminates to Will the real truth, and that is while Will could give him the skinny on every art book in the world, he couldn't tell him what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. That there's something to experiencing life beyond what is inside a book and that Will has to embrace that if he's to put his intellect to good use and to have a happy and fulfilling life.
