allay gluto gluteny's championship sunday run at genesis will go down in history the general of the french smash army that descended upon san jose this weekend took down four potential top 10 players in a top eight run that will go down not just as one of the best european performances at a smash major but as one of the best runs ever today we'll take you through the big combos brilliant bait and other disgustingness that made gluteny's historic run possible saturday was business as usual for gluteny he didn't drop a single game until he ran into the buzz saw that is mk leo in winner's quarters he bounced back from that loss to hand one of his regular european foes siskiy his seventh loss in his many sets to advance to top eight with that performance gluteny had already matched his placing at genesis 7 where he picked up wins over mudase goblin and nairo among others but if gluteny was going to beat that run he was going to have to push through some bracket demons the four players that he faced on his run to grand finals cola zomba light and spargo owned a collective 8 and 4 record over the frenchman entering sunday's action arguably the most difficult matchup of the four was glutanese first not only did cola own a three and zero record against gluteny but all of those match-ups had come from the past half year with cola taking out gluteny twice to win ceo 2021 and adding another win in a collision 2022 top 8 qualifying match the set count doesn't tell the whole story though gluteny won at least one game in all three sets and two went to a decisive fifth game even in his loss at ceo 2021 he pulled off one of the hottest clips you'll ever see you see the still there's the perry too it wasn't enough though as gluteny simply could not find his way out of the corner against cola's oppressive roy and he tried just about everything where the ceo sets were defined by cola's ability to keep gluteny on the ledge genesis 8's match up between the two was defined by gluteny's explosiveness both with and without waft cola was still fantastic at the ledge particularly when he was hitting the devastating two-frame dare bear combo to catch wario's ledge grab but gluteny brought a number of tricks this time holding down on his up specials to hit through the ledge using high bikes and using well-timed ledge drop aerials to mix things up in a way that was lacking at ceo as a result he was able to survive long enough to find devastating openings gluteny opened cola up for at least 40 percent a whopping ten times over the course of the four games an average of two and a half per game two were devastating waft combos one to end game three notably coming after gluteny managed to slip past a cola ledge trap and one a half-loft combo to take cola's second stock of the final game but that means that 8 of those 10 big damage combos came without waft gluteny was absolutely deadly off of just about every hit at the low and mid percent and he was able to pile on huge damage without loft enabling him to save waft for the final stock or to secure a big lead rather than as a tool to play catch-up next was zomba who had sent gluteny to losers just weeks ago at glitch infinite in their first set gluteny had no clue what hit him zomba 3 stalked him in game 1 and in game 2 zomba took a huge lead forcing gluteny to use waft to catch up and he was unable to find the final stock as zomba lived to 137 percent and root to sealing the second game you can't blame this one on rob's big chassis gluteny had a nearly spotless record against rob players before running into zomba while our character data is incomplete he owned a 91 game win rate against the robot prior to facing zomba at glitch according to the pgstats.com database that includes heavily positive records on top eu rob players like vidad and longo and a 4-0 set record against wadi it was clear that zomba's movement with the character was something entirely new to gluto he was able to make adjustments though even with that losing effort gluteny was even able to force a game 5 and wario's most terrifying situation rage and waft on deck and both players on their last stock but zomba had simply built too much of a lead for gluteny to finish the reverse 3-0 the momentum gluteny was building in the end of their previous set carried through to the genesis 8 set gluteny used wario's superior air mobility to position himself perfectly to perry near after nair and gluto's punish game proved to be too much as with the cola set there were two critical waft combos the game winners in games 1 and 3 respectively but gluteny was able to find 5 other openings of at least 40 percent throughout the set including these absolutely demoralizing cross-stage combos on zomba's first counterpick kalos pokemon league in game two uh if he can just do it on the center but it's not gonna be oh oh i love the ford error to set up and man pluto's punish game is just getting better and better wow and right now we talked about zomba oh hey yo the run back the run back on the platform again again again oh my god luteny is opening zomba all the way up gluten in light his loser semi's opponent have gone about as back and forth as you can go after gluteny won 3-0 in pools at ultimate summit 2 the two traded game 5 sets light took it at prime saga gluteny won it congo saga light took the run back at congo saga and losers and gluteny took their first post-lockdown set at ultimate summit 4. but on this day light would prove no match for the runaway train that was gluteny we even saw the often overlooked buff that wario received in patch 13.0.1 uh neutral attack 1 reduced vulnerability that buff would be responsible for gluteny's first big opening of the set to beat light though explosiveness isn't enough gluteny's defense was an equally important asset against light not only was he able to beat light's usually airtight ledge traps over and over but he was also able to find some big punishes on typically safe options like fox's neutral air check this one from game two it's a good attitude option for uh for wario so yeah he kind of just instead of playing scared he's like i'm just gonna go ahead and drift and do it that's that's gonna be death yeah a big momentum swing after light had built up the percent lead on the first stock light had his chance to get back in the set and given the volatile set history between the two ludo did not want to risk a game four down nearly 100 percent on his second stock gluteny found the big opening at a mere 13 paving the way for a 3-0 and a trip to losers finals with the win gluteny tied his best s-tier performance ever his third place at evo 2019 the biggest smash tournament of all time the last barrier between him and a new personal best performance at a super major was spargo the pair had played three sets spargo took it two to one at the g4 smash invitational gluteny took the winner's set at delfino mazareta 2022 in a thrilling five games and then spargo slapped him down with an overwhelming 3-0 in the loser's run back wario has some great tools in the cloud match-up specifically his ridiculous air mobility and array of excellent aerials for edge guarding but on the flip side cloud's buster sword is as good as it gets at stuffing wario's stubby limbs in neutral and spargo's ability to avoid long strings in disadvantage has played a huge role in his post-lockdown ascendance as one of the world's greatest players in his win over mk leo at collision 2022 spargo only suffered seven openings of at least 30 percent damage and never more than two in a single game bioeth may not have wario's combo tree at her disposal but we've seen what leo can do with her that's something that few players will ever be able to accomplish against him so when gluto was presented with an opening like this you just know he had to take advantage and take advantage he did using wario's superior air mobility to force fargo into a checkmate situation and let's give gluto credit for this edge guard the fact that he was able to space his bike in a way as to not save spargo required some deft movement and timing despite a wrong-way waft that nearly let spargo back into the game gluto was able to hold the lead and prove spargo hadn't solved him back at delfino massa gluteny may have lost game 2 but buried in the loss were signs that he was truly figuring out spargo's defenses to seal spargo's second stock he made brilliant use of the armor on full charged waft using it to burst through a cloud down air and shock the entire venue he would follow that up with a 0-79 to put spargo in the danger zone before a mis-spaced upbeat cost him the chance at what would have been a devastating comeback win no matter with spargo ledge trapping and searching for the kill early in game 3 gluteny pulled the reversal that arguably turned the set it wasn't a waft combo it was just an incredibly clean play off the ledge similar to many of the plays that saved him against cola earlier in the day gluto would push the momentum and follow up with a 50 string and a nifty bike edge guard ensured that a whiffed waft didn't matter gluto may not have had waft on deck but cloud is always in the danger zone against wario in his huge selection of edge guarding tools and nobody in the venue was ready for it to be this one that sunk spargo in game four spargo tried to steal the stock with the fare but gluto was ready not even the last ditch limit could save spargo gluto would add another 50 opening his very first opening of the decisive game four which spargo pushed to the limit before finally falling for an absolutely brilliant bike from gluteny in the end gluto managed six openings of at least 50 percent in the four game set a truly impressive feat against one of the single most rock-solid players in the world his ability to get big damage onto spargo early and often allowed him to win the set despite hitting just one ko waft and even that came in the game 2 loss he only hit one other waft in the set the wrong way waft that nearly cost him game 1. there's proof of just how deep gluteny's punished game goes even with waft nearly taken off the table entirely he still had enough tricks up his sleeve to take down spargo even before the spargo win there was an argument to be made that genesis 8 was gluteny's greatest tournament run ever the spargo win ends any discussion glutini's best win at evo 2019 his previous best s-tier run was kame who peaked at 11th on the pgr uv2 ceo 2021 his previous best north american major finish had under 800 entrants and no mk leo spargo or tweak genesis 8 on the other hand currently stands as the largest event of the post-lockdown era and all four of his championship sunday wins could wind up as top 10 players when the next pgru season is said and done gluteny will get his chance to extend his hot streak this weekend as the smash season continues with pound 2022 subscribe to pg stats to keep up with all our recaps and analysis from pound low tide city and beyond thanks for watching my name is
