Gifts & Ministries of the Holy Spirit 27 - Receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit ~ Dr. Lester Sumrall

[Applause] may be seated it's a joy to see you and we're delighted to have you in this class we have been studying the gifts and the ministries given to the body of Christ through the instrument of the Holy Ghost for the last several months in this class and we are hoping that it not only went into your mind but it went penetrated and went down into your spirit and and today's lesson is not that the finality of the group but it begins on page 87 it has to do with how you can receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit now it's all right to talk about apple pie but if you don't get any apple pie ain't apple pie you see how you're going to get your share of it and there's no need to talk about gifts of the Spirit if you're not going to reach out for yours if the body isn't going to reach out and say now we're living in these last days we're very conscious of these are the last days and what we wish to do is to reach out ourselves personally and collectively as a body and say we wish and desire to have the gifts of the Holy Spirit functioning in our midst for the edifying of the body and the Bible says these are put in the church for the edifying of the church not for the lifting up of a single person on his own but for the edification of the body and so we want to learn more and more about them we don't want to quit just because these lessons of being finalized we want this to be the time when we are set afire on the inside and and with great determination that what we have heard we shall now see manifested can you say Amen you can talk about salvation and nobody ever get saved you're not doing a lot and so you can talk about the gifts and the ministers of the Holy Spirit but if they don't get the gift and don't minister then we're not what God wants us to be and all the people said in your introduction it says our definitions and our identifications of the gifts of the Spirit are not just sufficient they're not totally for sufficient for us we must also know how we personally can get ahold of them receive them use them for the edification of the body in John chapter 14 verse 16 the Lord Jesus is and I will pray the father and he should give you another comforter that he may abide with you forever now this is a promise made by the Lord Jesus Christ that after his going back to heaven there would be a person called comforter and there are a lot of other names he is a called a teacher and one who reveals revelations and so forth but that he will be with us forever so that means the Lord Jesus said he would be here he is here he didn't just come for a short period and gone away he's in our midst today and and this we have to be conscious of and he is here to give gifts how can we get ours how can we get ours and and your point number one Simon Peter said in Acts chapter 2 verse 38 and 39 repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and so here we find the hundred and twenty had received the Twelve Apostles and all of those who are with them the hundred twenty had received the masses of the people that you find in an acceptor - beginning at verse 9 and the Parthian 's and the Medes and the Mesopotamians and the Judeans and it goes through and gives you the people from all over the world that were in Jerusalem at that time who did receive the power of the Holy Spirit he says now they said what can we do and though these were religiously inclined people and though they had come to Jerusalem for worship they hadn't come to Las Vegas to gamble and and they hadn't come as euros of the support around find pretty girls they had come to Jerusalem to worship their business in Jerusalem was one thing that was worship and Peter struck them like a dagger to the heart and said now if you want this first repent it isn't that amazing the more really religious you are in spiritual you are the more necessary it is to repent no we don't like that I know we don't you use of what could they repent up they may have had many things in their lives that were not correct maybe they were forgiven and not forgiven whichever but he says of the way and of this blessing is to get right with God and we have to still teach that today you say yes I want to receive the gifts of the Holy Ghost then we say look inside of you get rid of that which is which is not spiritual get rid of that which is carnal unnatural or sinful and and get right with God that beginning of it is repent and now I know that there not many churches that understand that we're capable of teaching that but if you're gonna move into the mistress of God and anointings of God and the power of God gets her insides right you know it's alright say yeah I'll take a gift put him up like yeah I take a gift no don't we begin on the inside not the outside so he said repent if you're going to get into these gifts he says first repent and and then he said be baptized now these people possibly only news sprinkling at that time or some form but he said John Baptist baptism the Greek word here for this word baptized us in the Bible means to dip put under and so it does not mean three drops of water on your brain it means get everything you got underneath you know like one farmer in Arkansas that I baptized he started into the river his wife yes is my god you got your pocketbook and your pocket they get it out it'll get wet he's an arm baptizing that too I don't think they've been very many people that ever baptized their pocketbook but he was going to put the whole thing under and he and he did put it on there and says so you first repent what does baptism mean it means that out to the things of the world get buried then come come to life be born again you know with a new spirit so you not only repent but you submerge the old life and you come up with a new life and that's what God would have us to do repent be baptized everyone there they're no exceptions you see in the name of the of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and then at that point you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost so the the first part of the Holy Spirit is the gift first of the Holy Ghost being within you you're being able to speak to the Lord in a spiritual language that's number one after that comes these nine gifts that is not part of the nine gifts that is the infilling and that is your communication with the Heavenly Father you communicate with him and the language your mind doesn't understand your natural mind but your spiritual mind understands and it moves back and forth between you and the heaven and father and then verse 39 is a shocker to denominational people they they they don't ever like to read verse 39 because it says the promises of to you and it's also to your children and it is to all say all it is to all that are afar off where we have two thousand miles in two thousand years away from it so we're kind of far off alright but and it's promised to us the far off ones it's promised to us even as many as the Lord I got your call as long as God is calling people to repentance and the salvation and to heaven that same heavenly father is filling people the Holy Ghost there together you you can't you can't change them you can't move them around they are together when he is saving he's filling with the Holy Ghost you know he says the promises of those that are far off even as long as God is saving souls even as long as God is meeting people's needs as long as God is calling people to repentance he is also filling them with the power of the Holy Ghost so this is the promise of the gifts and we say we stand on the promises of God because they were made for us the gifts are for every believer then you point number two how are we going to receive these gifts first knowledge we know the promise if you're ignorant you don't know anything you know you don't know for this for you're not where one preacher says they died 2,000 years ago another preacher he says therefore today stop being ignorant ignorant read the Bible what a preacher says is not final what God says is final well hallelujah and let us get on the track of truth and live there and you'll make good speed there - all right yours your second point by revelation the Apostle Paul received the gifts of divine relation and directly from God now there are unique people on the face of this earth I've met people and a number of parts of the world that received the gifts of the Holy Spirit and did not know what they were they were seeking God with such fervor they were seeking God for such an anointing until they received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and even sometimes the gifts of the Spirit are functioning but I want to say to you one thing if I get to the spirit functions for you and and you do not recognize it or understand it it very likely will not function anymore it because God cannot continue to function and ignorance I told you about the three Tibetan men the God told that the church is having problems with this doctrine and and so God spoke to them and said if you go three days II you will find men of another language and another color and so forth and these men will teach you this truth now we were traveling every day we were moving every day only the Holy Ghost would know where we were because we didn't know where we would be either you say why would you know where you're gonna be man when the sun's begin against a set a you find the first little town and get into the thing and let them lock the door for you because otherwise you're the wild beasts and the and the and and the killers would would would you would destroy you you wouldn't be alive the next day so only the Holy Ghost would know where we were so here was some men that God spoke to you see the word of wisdom says if you would go three days you will find these men and they will be there and he these these two brothers left the church they were elders they travel for three days directly east and and when they got there they said we're looking for foreigners and they said well they were in that horse in over there and so they came over late at night and began to put a lantern around we said well what do you want and they said we're from three days journey away and we've come to find out truth says you have to teach us and and we couldn't say tomorrow morning they had a set right there with their Lantern in your face all night and so brother Carter and I got up and that we we always kept an interpreter with us he slept right by us we all had army cots and and so we sat there these men told us the problems of their church and and brother Carter began to give them the Word of God he didn't tell him what he thought he began to give them the Word of God that would straighten out that thing so they covered it down the Word of God and now it was almost daylight we said now rest a little they said we don't have time we got three days journey we got to go back and says we got to tell the church for you to what you've taught us they didn't even lay down to rest they got back on those mules and back across the the way they went three days journey back home now if those men don't grow in God and if they don't increase in God and if they don't come to understand the gifts of the Holy Spirit it won't keep functioning in their midst you see it did that one time in a phenomenal way and one of the greatest ways I've ever heard in all of my life but if you don't have a knowledge to go with it you can't have a continuation of it so it is so necessary to be taught how many understand that it is so necessary to to be taught how to use these things and one of the biggest things to be taught about them is that these blowing in the church and you are part of the church and they're not for some satellite to be wheeling around in the atmosphere up there all by themselves claiming how great they are and everybody paying homage to them that's not what it's all about it is all about you and I being deep in God and deep in the body I have never known of anyone circulating out there away from the body every money that very much in my life and these things are to lift up the whole body when you're not loyal to the group that you're in you're not going to be any blessing if you're unhappy you're not going to be any blessing if you're finding fault you're not going to be a blessing it is in in first Corinthians chapter 12 the unity of the body he said these were not function without the unity of the body so the first thing we need to do is to realize God gave these in order that the body may be unified and that God would get the glory and the gift might function here today in their tomorrow here today in their tomorrow that we we don't have a superiority because guess function within us I was just thinking this morning is I was having some meditation time that that there was a man in this city his name is the covenants over here some of you met him he was converted under my ministry years ago and came in I think out of the Catholic Church and his wife and several others and he was one of the happy men rejoicing men I mean it was great and he laid hands on one of our people there they said they had cancer and he laid hands upon them and evidently they got healed he followed it up and they got heal he came to me and said well I can't stick around here anymore I have gifts of healing I said you have what he said I'm healing about it with cancer I said you can message you've got a lot of work to do I always said I have to start my own church and he went down Michigan Street then started a church and he finally went here and there in the front they finally got a hold of the little Hungarian Church out here if they've not given to us and I I felt sorry for he did so many things and most of them are good things but he he left the originating body had he stayed with the body god only knows how great he could have become but he immediately said you can't do what I can do then that's pride you know I couldn't say this one you can't do what I can do you might do it better God just told me to do it and I have to do it and and but it's it's not a thing for me to boast about and say hey look at me look at me I'm great none of us are great Jesus is great and and we're all the body and we let him function is he the Holy Ghost function as he wants to function in the body can you say Amen now the Apostle Paul we're on the number two the fossa Paul receive the gifts of the violation directly you ought to put that word in there there very directly you say what do you mean they he didn't instantly say to the Apostles not teach me all that you know there's something like that you've got to make a place for unique people in the body let's listen what he says himself in in Galatians 1:17 neither when I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles that means he didn't go up there for teaching he didn't go up there for them to establish him he says I didn't go I went into Arabia understand he was there around three years running to Arabia you said what is semi-desert up I'm with away from anybody and everybody else and he consumed himself in prayer and investing and in seeking you see and I returned again under under Damascus so out of Arabia he came back to Damascus then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter and I bowed with him fifteen days isn't amazing he he knew how long he was a guest there some guests forget how long they've been a sure place jesus said to Peter in Matthew 16 and 17 flesh and blood hath not revealed this to thee but my father which art in heaven now there are those like Howard Carter you know God revealed this whole thing that we've been teaching for all these months here to a man named Howard Curtis while he was in jail while he worked like a dog for the military that the reason they put him in prison was because he refused to fight he says I I'm sorry I don't have time to fight I just received the Holy Ghost I'd like to get the German saves and I don't want to kill in any of them and and the military got so angry at him they wanted to kill him you know this is that you're not law he says I'm more loyal than all of you I'm have my lawyer first in Jesus and second in the King they made him few potatoes they didn't they didn't have electric ones in those days this is World War he made him peel potatoes for eight hours for to feed thousands of men you know and and then and then when he had a quiet moment he went into the gifts of the Spirit he just sometimes half the night he was moving in through these gifts of the Spirit and God revealed them to him there are men that seek God but what they bring out of that they share I get it what he brought out of there is the rest of the New Testament so he he wasn't playing games he wasn't being arrogant he was seeking the Most High God directly and not from someone else most of us have to be taught by others I don't know why but there are once in a while a person that direct revelation comes to and it's from God it's not playing games and and it is not holding back no we're talking about how you can receive the guest number one recognize the promise this belongs to us now the time schedule is right that's your first point and you can receive just as much as Peter received Paul receives or any of the others that we in on it the Holy Ghost is not going anywhere he says I will be with you as long as God saves Souls I'm gonna be there I'm gonna be there filling over the Holy Ghost the gifts of God so we know we are on the right schedule timewise number two I had to sneak this in here on you because there are instances where God supernaturally does something and you have to include it so Paul receives his amazing revelation by seeking God in a desert for three years then he came back and he went up and kept it and compared notes with Peter and and Peter says it sounds all right to me and so the two of them had 15 days of comparing notes are you here and and and both of them liked what they what they had seen and heard and and so they were pleased with it all right and now when Peter said that Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God Jesus said you didn't get that from man you didn't learn that in and where my father which is in heaven my father in heaven revealed this to you and so there is a place of divine revelation on information from God and information from heaven but it should be received it well it and the 1st Corinthians chapter 14 it says if a prophet speaks that the other prophet standing by judge you know the sea for that came from God or it came from his own mind we must not let a person say well I had a message from God you have to obey me we don't do that we put it to the God's people and say let's look at this let's feed on our spirits if this is from God and not from God I mean thinks we ought to do it right and that there there's so many revivals in the past that have gone down and because they weren't done right the it was a human sight of it not the divine sight it was a human side that just didn't fit into God's program and so they they don't start with God then your point number three years you can receive gifts of the Spirit by the laying on of hands I don't know how deep a gift you could receive in that way whether it could be this the first beginning of it you receive the the spirit of speaking in tongues many places like in Germany at cars robe I call forth all the preachers that were there that had never interpreted that's the God a hundred of them came forth and then I took one of them on the platform a fine German young young pastor that's what you have never interpreted yeah that's it all right I'm going to lay hands on you for that gift before all of these people and then I'm going to speak in tongues and you are going to interpret it this is all right so I said Lord bestow under this young man the gift of the interpretation of tongues so that when tongues were spoken in his church he will have the ability to interpret it now Lord in the name of Jesus Christ my Savior I command him to receive this particular gift that he might be able in his body they're not in the body of Christ they're that when someone's fixed in tongues he will have the message that God wants them to have I said receive it now and immediately I spoke in tongues and he interpreted it so now and then I prayed for all these other pastors that they should have the gift and I don't know they might have been a dozen or two or three that that did receive it at that moment and and they would have to say that they received it by our special anointing in a meeting they did not receive it seeking God a pleading to God or anything but here in Timothy and first Timothy for 14 years says neglect not the gift that is in you which was given you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery and so it is possible for spiritual man now I wouldn't go around getting denomination to lay hands on me for something they didn't have themselves you cannot give anybody what you don't have you can try all you want to if you don't have it you sure God can't give it if a man needs a thousand dollars and you want to loan him a thousand dollars if you don't have a thousand dollars all you can do is wish you had it are you here if you don't have the gifts of the Spirit you're sure God can't give them to somebody else and so you must if when it says the presbytery here it meant a full gospel church one of the churches that existed at that time but he said I want to say to you Timothy of which is a successor to Paul and for a long time was a colossal blessing to the church after Paul went to be with the Lord and so he said now I don't want you to neglect the special gift in you now this could have been speaking in tongues in US and a Oh Durance to the public oh this could have been speaking in tongues as a message and then it could be the interpretation of tongues now we don't know but anyway I'd like to tell you the timer just ran out in that remarkable that life is that way one time all of our time is going to run out so we better stay ready for the run out and all the people said give the Lord a hand everybody real good and big [Applause]
