Ghostwire: Tokyo - Story Explained

[Music] hello and welcome to the latest installment in the law and order video series the video series where you look at and unpack stories from games in this one we'll be looking at the story behind the latest release from tango gameworks ghostwire tokyo ghostware tokyo is an action-adventure game with horror elements it's not scary in the slightest but the combat was entertaining underneath the combat though is an intricate and sometimes confusing storyline absolutely steeped in japanese culture so i'll do my best to unpack it in this video this game has literally just come out so if you haven't played this game and you want to i'm not entirely sure why you're here but there will be spoilers in this one you have been warned okay let's jump in [Applause] [Music] shibuya tokyo a young man named akito azuki has been involved in a motorcycle accident people look on as akito lies helpless and motionless on the ground one man feels something invisible hit him and a voice exclaims that they can't use a live one this invisible presence turns its attention towards the motionless body of aquito with akito hovering somewhere between life and death the presence enters akito's body and possesses him akito wakes up and sees something has happened to him alarming him after encountering three people who ask him if he's okay they run off after seeing him understandable and then he hears a voice inside his head and confused as to what is going on the voice tells him that he whoever he is needs his body the three people who run off seem to get enveloped by a strange fog and there remains literally nothing of them afterwards this is an event known and referred to as the vanishing the fog moves towards akito but it doesn't seem to affect him akita sees a group of what appear to be malevolent spirits known as visitors just walking through tokyo and the voice inside him tells him to hide this voice is a spirit called kk akito sees a man on a screen wearing a hanya mask appear and tell all the vagrant souls basically the souls of all the people caught up in the fog that he is their salvation and their souls will form the foundation of the world to come he also says that a suitable vessel has been readied and awaits their arrival the vagrant souls of the citizens who were hours earlier going about their lives rise from their piles of clothes and their souls become enclosed in a sort of box which then disappear into nothing kk after indicating that he knows who the man in the mask is tells akito that he is already dead and if he leaves his body he will die for good akito tells kk that there is something he needs to do and that's to go and see his sister mari in the hospital she's been badly burned in a fire and is unconscious akito is confronted by a group of other worldly spirits known as rainwalkers who try to attack him akita realizes that he has now gained ethereal powers thanks to kk spirit inside him and kills the visitors throwing these elemental attacks are an ancient spiritual process known as ethereal weaving which uses something called ether a type of energy that stems from the underworld but more on that later they make their way to the hospital through the deserted streets of shibuya and in the hospital they see a pair of visitors sealing even more souls into boxes kk tells akito that this is in order to drag them to the underworld or maybe even to devour them akita finds notes in the hospital indicating that the staff had been seeing shadows wearing masks indicating that something strange has been happening in the hospital for a while after encountering some more paranormal phenomena they reach his sister's room but they're not alone akita is thrown into what seems to be an otherworldly dimension and the man wearing the mask who is simply referred to as hanya is standing over murray hanya states that mario's touched the other side yet she remains alive and well and he refers to her as a potential observer kk appears outside of akito's body and hanya recognizes it hanya says to kk that he liberated his spirit from its prison basically meaning that he killed him and hanya was surprised that he still clings to his mortal flesh kk replies that he came back for revenge on hanya after claiming that he is maori salvation akito and kk run at hanya but are captured by hanya's cronies known as the faceless all sporting creepy as hell masks themselves hannah then punches a hole in akito's chest gravely wounding him and then he watches as hanya carries off his sister and disappears winding up in a field somewhere kk stands over akito telling them that he is dead time that passed in the mortal world while they confronted hanya was only three seconds in reality and kk tells him that one more breath and he's gone akitou says that he can't die yet as he's not finished as he needs to find his sister and save her kk says that he can help him and enter zakito's body saving him they get to work and kk tells akito that in order for hanya's plan to work they'll need to hold a massive ritual but the akito is too weak at the moment to face hanya kk says that he has a safe house from his time when he was alive on the way akito and kk encounter what appears to be a torii gate tori gate if you don't know is a traditional japanese gate most commonly found at the entrances of shinto shrines marking the transition from the mundane to the sacred anyway they see a strange blue energy around it and they use their power to cleanse the gates this action seems to remove the mysterious fog from the surrounding area making it safe for them to travel through it seems these tory gates are some sort of conduit for otherworldly spiritual energy known as corruption they enter the shrine and find a type of paper called a katashiro a doll shaped piece of paper or in some cases wood which would have been used in japanese sorcery since the ancient times usually used to absorb harmful corruption in limbs etc they can be also used as a vessel to house divine spirits inside them they put this to you straight away when they see two rainwalkers trying to capture souls and after defeating them they managed to contain the souls inside the katashiro instructs akito to find phone booth and after finding one and entering a special number the phone mysteriously opens to reveal a contraption underneath kk reveals that his friend ed warren built the device called a spirit transmission device and it allows souls to be transferred through the device to relative safety somewhere outside the barrier the barrier around shibuya kk mentions that anyone the fog turned into a spirit should then go back to normal again after they send them back essentially it helps them find their bodies again anyway they eventually make it to kk's apartment well it's not an apartment really it's a safe house you see kk was a private detective who worked cases regarding disappearances in the city and then ran with a crew at some point prior to his death but we'll discuss his backstory in more detail later on akito obtains a special bow which channels ethereal energy as they are leaving the safe house a sort of barrier seems to block them from leaving the complex with the intention of crushing the building with them in it akito and kk despite experiencing strange hallucinations they managed to find the source and destroy the barrier stones thinking they can catch the culprit who set the trap they need to track them down but first they need to clear fog around the area so they cleanse some more torii gates after obtaining brand new fire and water skills they track the culprit through a huge shopping center which leads them through some subway tunnels to a very large underground area underneath shibuya they were then attacked by one of hanya's masked accomplices they are transported to another realm again and they have to do battle with this accomplice who is somehow transformed into a visitor known as asujasuki after defeating it kk is astonished and slightly furious to see that hanya has used kk's dead body as a vessel for a malevolent spirit we'll discuss the particular spirits later in the video but for now back to the plot the energy manages to pull kk out of akito locking kk spirit in a cube and throws akito back into the mortal world leaving him with just his wits and no powers surprised that he's still alive he manages to make his way back to the safe house to figure out what to do next more otherworldly happenings occur when entering the safe house and this is where akitou meets rinko rinco was one of kk's team a team which devoted themselves to putting a stop to hanya's schemes at some point prior to the events of the vanishing she died now a spirit she gives akitos something to give to kk and tells him that they are both still connected even though they are apart akito follows a black trail to a shrine and after defeating the visitors gardening it akito manages to free kk they decide to work together to achieve their mutual goals and after gaining new powers given that they are now properly in sync with one another they experience tremors and notice something in the sky a bright yellow light shooting up into the sky it seems that hanya has started his ritual ceremony problem is that the ceremony has been a restricted part of town and we need to cleanse most of the fog around the area so they can get there another problem is that one of the tory gates they need to cleanse in order to remove the fog is invisible due to low ether levels akito and kk here are pay phone ringing so they pick up and it's rinko she tells them the source of the fog from that tory gate is coming from a specific building making their way through the building they encounter the same hallucinations as they did in the apartment they reach rinko who is using a device that messes with ether levels so they can find the tory gate she manages this then disappears after cleansing the offending gate another barrier comes up trapping them inside it just like back at the safe house only this time it's bigger they manage to clear it by finding the barrier stones causing it and they push on kk is now becoming suspicious of rinko given that someone always seems to be one step ahead of them all the time kk tells arkito to find a phone booth with a distinctive marking on it and using that phone booth they contact kk's friend ed while technically it's a recording of ed which directs them to a parking lot they arrive and find a voice recorder which features a girl named erica running off somewhere and rinko going after her whilst aired and a man named dale leave shibuya shortly before the vanishing happened brinko left a key inside a rental locker at shibuya station so akito and kk go to the locker and find a key inside it they go to an apartment and they use the key they discover some residual energy that rinko left behind and it reveals that while she was there another of hanya's accomplices named koamote captured her and disguised herself as rinko they realized that they are working with a fake kk suspicions were right karemo transports them somewhere different entirely and after hallucinating again they reach rinko and are able to free her spirit speaking to her through a phone she identifies the next tory gates they need to cleanse in order to progress through hanya's ritual site the final gate leads them to a secret entrance in a underground lair in this layer they see hanya in there he describes both akito and kk as beyond salvation and reveals that murray has taken her place atop the final stage whatever the hell that means it seems like hania's plan is to harvest human souls in order to connect the mortal world to the underworld kk reveals hanya's motive his wife died five years prior to the events of the vanishing and he's trying to bring her back it's also revealed in this meeting that hanya is using the bodies of his wife and daughter as vessels to facilitate his plan of beckoning their souls back from beyond anyway hanya swans often leaves komo to do his dirty work komo transforms into a cat-like creature and draws out and swallows kkk spirit leaving akito without powers again after identifying the weak point as the tales of the creature and pulling the core from each of them komo is defeated back in the mortal world again akito runs at hanya and tries to slap him in the back of the head but gets thrown backwards violently by a burst of energy it seems that hanya has resurrected some sort of ancient giant known as daedara bocce and then he disappears kuromo stands up and kk sets the spirit inside it free and receives its kufuda a sort of talisman or a spiritual anchor carrying dark power speaking to wrinkle on the phone she thanks them and tells them that hanya is making progress with the ritual but the kifuru they got from komo can help them find the tory gates they need to cleanse the tatsui shrine but of course nothing is ever that easy the giant summoned by hanya is disrupting things and calls a large group of visitors to the shrine they defeat them and look into the distance but they realize that due to whatever it is that hanya has created they can't get nearer as it'll rip their souls out kk has a plan however he remembers that rinko has an old bike stored in the garage a custom ride which can cut straight through the fog only problem is that it needs special parts to run a special turbine which they manage to find from a luxury sports car and instead of regular gasoline it needs a special fragrant underworld oil to run it they managed to get some from a tory gate which looks a lot different to the rest this has something to do with the underworld's influence being particularly potent in that area still with me i hope so anyway they arrive at the gate which seems to be a portal to the underworld and retrieve the oil they fit it to the bike and they're good to go they're cutting through the fog but are attacked by yasio toko the thin man who damages the bike but akito keeps going this is until yasiyo toko pulls down a road sign causing akito to come off the bike he runs off and eventually arrives at the tower of tokyo ritual is well underway now depending on how your game played out akito and kk come across rinko who is sitting at the place where she died she departs and moves on they go to ascend the steps towards the tower but tsugumo is standing there so naturally yep another fight in a different dimension with a huge spider anyway after he rips its core out and removes its kifuda this one is done and dusted and akito and kk can finally go and confront hanya who's standing over mari hanya says that by liberating their souls from their shells or their bodies they return to their true form he puts up a force field between him and akito and says that he has all the souls that he requires for his ritual and that he will use them to shatter the barrier between life and death merging the two worlds together akito furiously and desperately tries to break the force field down but hanya asks him that because maori's body is burned badly from the fire what makes him think that she'll want to return to that shell anyway akito drops to his knees with kk telling him to get up as hanya's ritual is nearly complete he grabs maori and jumps straight into the giant's mouth into a place called the void akito has a choice to make and he's asking mari what she wants in the hope that she'll answer but as he does this yasiyo toku enters the picture again and crawls into the room yep it's fight time again round two with the sojitsuki goes as expected after a swift victory and after removing yasiyotko's kifuda akito and kk follow hanya into the void the void which resembles something out of the evil within leads akito through a lot of hallucinations recollections of his and mari's memories it gives us a backstory for akito and his sister but we'll dive further into that in a bit akito at some point climbs a snowy mountain in a storm and reaches a set of doors behind which hanya resides arriving in yet another dimension nakitu confronts hanya performing his final actions on murray nakato tries to stop him but hanya summons visitors who try to stop akito all of a sudden a flash of thunder crashes through a tory gate striking murray and causes something to happen the gate to the underworld has been opened but something is wrong red spider lilies which in japanese culture signify final goodbyes and tend to grow where people part ways for good start to sprout up from the ground and the visitors hanya summons start disappearing mario is floating above them hanya realizes that something is wrong but says the ceremony cannot be stopped and tries to destroy the sphere around her which is protecting her he is then thrown backwards into the gate of the underworld and maori falls to the ground he thanks sarkito but then passes away in true hanya's style interrupting akito's time of mourning he emerges from the underworld with a couple of klingons the immortal shells of his wife and daughter are attached to him he's still very adamant that he's succeeded in his plan given that the two realms are connected and that he and his family will live together in eternal paradise he then yep you guessed it pulls akito into another dimension and transforms into a being known as hangon a messed up freaky mix of all the vessels that he's used for his evil deeds merged into one one by one akito pulls their cores out of the handgun defeating it for good and one by one the souls that were trapped in the underworld rise up and will go back to their bodies again and everything will go back to normal a flash of white light takes akito and maori to a forest where their deceased parents are waiting akito hands mari over to them for them to take her to the other side keke then asks akito for one last favor to find his wife in sunan to tell them that he never gave up keiki then passes on himself akita is alive the world is saved and everyone is at peace the game then ends so like i said a pretty complicated and convoluted plot with a lot of things to unpack and discuss so let's start by looking at the event that kicked this all off in the first place [Music] so we learned pretty early on that this weird event that basically makes everyone disappear is called the vanishing it's pretty much self-explanatory and that everyone literally disappears but how did it start but in the ghost-wide tokyo prelude visual novel the earliest we can see the fog appearing is through reports one in particular where a kid states that his best friend disappeared down a manhole this kid describes a strange fog which at that point in time would appear and then disappear again i guess this was just a sign of awful things to come as we can see at the start of the main game when the fog obliterates shibuya now quite what the science is behind it i don't know but it contains and is full of spiritual energy from another dimension entirely spiritual energy is so strong that it literally separates people's bodies from their souls powerful stuff discussing corruption it's probably best left to ed take it away ed and speaking no matter where one is they'll always find variegated ideas pertaining to psychological and religious impurity consider for example a house where an occupant dies being seen as unlucky however in japan the notion of corruption takes a peculiar form perhaps this is because it is in some way rooted in daily life so ingrained that people hardly notice and so it grows and festers unbeknownst to many if he is truly attempting to connect shibuya and the underworld then all the corruption that has gone unnoticed will come bursting forth this in turn will spawn huge numbers of visitors in a way you could say that it'll lift the veil on the real tokyo great thanks ed okay so what ed is saying if you didn't grasp that was that corruption has always been there but it's always just gone unnoticed until of course hanya opened the underworld and connected it to the mortal world then all the corruption rose up corruption is seen throughout shibuya as a tree-like structure remember ed mentioned that say someone dying in a house could make that house unlucky but a similar thing happens to a cherry blossom tree in shibuya sometimes in japan people were buried underneath the cherry tree now i'm not entirely sure why but it could be something to do with the fact that the cherry blossom or sakura represents the nature of life itself symbolizing both life and death the tree we see in the game had turned blood red as a result of corruption kk mentions that it's likely that the person buried underneath the tree caused the corruption stemming from their grudge and bad feeling leading to the tree's blossoms turning red when the corruption is removed via cleansing the tree blooms again corruption would attach itself to tory gates and shibuya which would in turn create the fog and therefore cause the vanishing and finally ed states that high levels of corruption bring about large numbers of visitors now we dive further down the rabbit hole and really far down actually in discussing japanese folklore as i said before this game is steeped in it and i had a great time researching and learning about a different culture to my own so here goes in the game right from the start actually we see an encounter malevolent spirits from another world hence the name visitors they do vary in appearance and some are actually based upon real japanese urban legends so that's slightly terrifying we won't be able to look at all of them in this video but i guess let's do a quick study and discover more about some of these visitors we'll mainly look at the ones which are based on urban legends as a lot of them such as the rainwalker the marionette and the relentless walker aren't urban legends as such but are just visitors born out of certain character traits such as violence rage and anxiety let's start with kuchisaki this is an urban legend full named kuchuzakiana which as the story goes possesses a large pair of scissors you know when you're approaching one in shibuya as the streets will go dark almost akin to silent hill and clear as soon as the monster is defeated appearance wise aside from the scissors her face is covered and this is because of the fact that she was an adulterous woman who was the wife of a samurai when the samurai found out about her infertility he sliced the corners of her mouth ear to ear this is best seen through the gucci's crimson counterpart makes sense that this visitor is described as being born from frenzied rage in the legend they asked the question am i pretty it's pretty much a lose-lose situation if you say no you fugly then she'll kill you with the scissors if you agree and say yes you are pretty she'll remove her mask she'll ask you again am i pretty if you say no she'll kill you if you say yes just slice your mouth from here to ear but apparently there is a way out by telling her that she looks average i guess the crimson version is the direct result of some poor schmuck giving the wrong answer wow what a bind moving on now this one was hard to research because shiromuku is the name of the long white kimono that the visitor is wearing now the story behind the shiromuku is slightly more intriguing purely because of its symbolism it was widely considered to be the symbol of purity but it's a symbol of death but before you go thinking it's all bleak and horrific it's not well maybe a little you see the white kimono itself would be worn by brides at weddings the death was to symbolize the wife leaving her old life behind then traditionally she would go and change into a colorful kimono symbolizing life or rather a new life with her husband in this case but with this the headdress is of more interest now you're thinking why is it so big given that the purpose of this headdress in folklore at least is to hide the horns of jealousy ego and selfishness and also given that the game describes this visitor as being born from feelings of profound envy ties this one together nicely now there are loads more such as the incredibly irritating shine dancer born from a sense of resignation and the rain slasher born from the deep entity that grows from personal conflicts in the workplace hr disaster lastly there are groups of visitors that walk around i was unlucky enough to get caught by one here and when they catch you they drag you to another dimension the only way you can get out is to fight but i guess that's it for this section if you think of any more then please let me know down below anyway moving on so before we jump into this section remember that somewhere in the story akito found a recording of a girl called erica running off well if you haven't worked it out yet erica is hanya's daughter the girl he killed during a ritual he ended up using her body for his evil vision and goal which leads us nicely into this section where we'll discuss the bosses we face in the game they're wearing creepy masks and these masks are traditional japanese no masks and the game refers to these characters by the names of these masks the collective term for these three bosses is the faceless i guess let's start with the faceless which inhabits the deceased party of kk this faceless wears a mask known as yatio toco this mask shows a gaunt man and this ghost by tradition is one that is suffering in hell and appears to be emaciated toko transforms into a large humanoid known as tsojiusuki moving on we get to koemote this one is born from an accumulation of animal spirits if faceless inhabits the body of hanya's deceased daughter erika don't worry we'll be diving into a story soon this mask represents youth and beauty koamu however becomes not so young and beautiful when she transforms into biotara a cat and creature thing and next okina this one possessed the body of hanya's wife who died of a mysterious illness five years prior to the events of the game the mask itself depicts an old man the transformation into this spider this thing was the result of high psychic energy and then we get onto hanya the haney mask is a demon mask which my guess is fitting considering the evil scope of his plan as we see at the end of the game hanya transforms into hang on a monster made up from all the faceless zealots he dragged into and used for his plan but let's look at hanya's agenda for a second now on surface level at least the game doesn't give us any clue about what hanya's background was which if you're a player who hates reading lore and listening to voice memos in games is a complete disaster but that's why i'm here anyway we find a few laptops scattered around shibuya which give us some valuable information hanya was once upon a time a scientist who lost the use of his hands for some reason and makes voice logs via a dictation program which a colleague developed for him starting today i'm going to test out a dictation application programmed by one of my colleagues i believe he meant it as an act of kindness given the restrictive movement of my hands he never directly says such things but he's certainly aware of the accident in any case i'm going to use this as a journal of my thoughts this morning my daughter asked if she could have a cat i suspect she asked her mother as well we'll have to discuss it when i get home taking care of a pet like that would be a good learning experience for her the issue with pets however is that they typically die before their owners i don't know that she fully understands that i also worry whether she would take proper care of it after some time the responsibility might fall on myself he mentions an accident of some sort which contributed to the loss of hand function another tape mentions that he hasn't slept in days and that his wife who had a condition has now worsened and that she is now in a coma he mentions that he finds the very concept of death difficult to accept and in this recording hanya says this today i can only stare at the hot cakes my daughter has prepared for me if my wife were here now she'd be hurrying me along so we could get the dishes cleared but she is not here with every passing second the hotcakes grow colder and colder just like her soulless body absurd things cool off because heat transfers from one source to another the energy itself doesn't just yes of course her soul hasn't turned into nothing it has simply left her body but where to where did it go i can save her i can do it in his last recording he states that he misled his assistance of his true reason for his plan essentially to raise the dead he saw the human body as a weak vessel which was a belief stemming from his wife's illness and then of course his own limitations due to his hands as we learned from the game hanya's motivation behind his master plan that he'd been cooking up for five years since his wife's death was to reunite with his deceased wife i mean at first it was just his wife he wanted to reunite with because as discussed she died of a lingering illness five years earlier but then this crackpot slowly lost his mind and decided that he would come up with a plan to connect the mortal world and the underworld together in the hope that his wife's soul would come out and that he his wife and his daughter erica could live in a paradise he had prepared for them i guess this paradise would have been located in another dimension entirely anyway he tried to use his daughter as a sacrifice i'm guessing in the exact way he used murray erica like maori died as a result of the ritual so as promised we're going to discuss erica's backstory so we know that erica is hania's daughter and that he sacrificed her as part of a ritual to reunite him with his wife but what happened to erica prior to this and how does she end up dead this is best explored through three after the end missions well when erica discovered the truth about what her father was doing and likely already having grieved her dead mother she walked away from her father and met kk and rinco and became a part of their crew kk was at this point investigating mysterious phenomena and missing persons reports over time erica developed a close relationship with rinko and they became like sisters or even as ed puts it mother and daughter erica took to adopting stray cats she absolutely loved them which is why the faceless inhabiting her body transforms into this weird cat creature this closeness between rinko and erica would prove to be catastrophic though at one point in time kk's crew had a plan to take down and finally stop hanya erika given her natural opposition to what her father was trying to do wanted to fight herself and asked kk to train her he agreed to meet her and taught her how to fight the day came when the plan was to be put into action but ringo had refused to let erica join their plan so erica ran off and rinco deviating from the plan ran off after her this caused ed and dale to leave shibuya and ultimately led to kk's death through the after the end mission akito and kk have to follow erica's psychic trail to work out what happened to her and how she ended up dead rinker had set up safe meeting points in shiboya should erica ever get into trouble so akita and kk goes to those locations after investigating they deduced that she never met up with ed like she was supposed to and that she suspect that she went straight for her father to fight him or i guess to stop him instead she got used as a sacrifice and died rinko died too at some point but remained tethered or changed to the mortal world until she could know what happened to erica after akito and kk find out what happened and free erica's body from the faceless residing within it rinco could then pass on so when it comes down to affinity there are five classical elements there are wind water fire earth and the fifth which is the spiritual element known as akasha if a person is responsive to this fifth element then they have what is known as affinity this means that the person can absorb ether into their bodies enabling them to converse with spirits amongst other spiritual giftings such as ethereal weaving the side effect though is that they see things that are otherwise invisible to other humans such as monsters through one such recording in the game we hear that erica asked ed about affinity and if it was hereditary or inherited ed couldn't answer and erica was disappointed see erica had affinity herself inherited from her father hanya rinko had it acted kk and akito and his sister which makes sense why hanya first needed erica for his sacrifice he needed someone with affinity and then for his last part of his ritual he needed maori people with affinity would experience hallucinations when in places containing high levels of ether very much similar to the way chiralian works in death stranding and its propensity to cause tears affinity whilst the person adjusted to it would experience blurred vision and headaches hallucinations and visions this is indicated at various points in the game after akito transfers large amounts of spirits to edge through the spiritual transmission device although we get glimpses of the reason mario is in the hospital it's only really made clear what their backstory is in the final part of the game when akito and kk venture into the giant or the void in a series of doors containing hallucinations and memories encompassing murray's life please tell us the following at some point after being an only child akita's mother and father conceived again and murray was born it seems from his earlier memories that akuto felt neglected by his parents and was no longer the focus of his parents affection anymore despite this he remained protective of murray but this eventually grew into him resenting his younger sister the favorite child and they gradually grew apart eventually their dad died and shortly afterwards their mum got sick and was hospitalized eventually passing away too this led to akitou and maori living together in an apartment until one day mary was sleeping and akita entered her room and locked the open window a fire broke out and mari couldn't escape out of the window she went to the door to leave the room but remembered her parents wedding rings were on the dresser she went back for them but when she returned to the door some of the ceiling buckled and blocked her only exit she was badly burned in the fire falling into a coma and this leads us to the start of the game akito had guilt about this little did the siblings know but they both had an affinity for ether it's not clear whether this was inherited from their mother or their father though but this does actually conclude this video on the story of ghostware tokyo i'm sure i missed some stuff and got some minor details incorrect but it's really quite deep in terms of law considering how much of it takes inspiration from japanese folklore on urban legends i really do hope that this video helped you understand
