but today how to replace a direct tv dish with an off the air antenna [Music] everybody is still do Tony like to welcome you to this episode of how to pick shirt 101 I'm tired of paying 150 dollars a month for TV that I don't watch so I'm going with off the air television this is gonna be fun guys it's really easy okay so here's the parts that you're gonna need to do this you're gonna need an HD off the air antenna I've got a preamplifier a a piece of cable some silicone grease you're gonna need some ends and then some cable tools basically to strip and prepare the end of the cable this is a socket wrench 13 millimeters to take down the satellite itself also needed a socket wrench with a 5/16 inch socket a pair of pliers and a heavy-duty cable tie oh yeah and you're gonna need a ladder to get on the roof okay the first thing you want to do is find this that's the power for the satellite dish you want to disconnect it unplug it from the power and then let's disconnect the cable itself this is the DirecTV Dish obviously we're gonna reuse this cable because it's connected to all the other connectors and all the other good stuff that DirecTV put in it's also grounded which is also very important so I'm gonna cut it off here just as close as I can to this little arm that comes up where the satellite receivers are okay we're gonna reuse this put a new end on it now next thing we're gonna do is take these three bolts out that should pretty much release the satellite dish now on this side there's a set screw that I put in here this one takes a 5/16 inch wrench that's a long screw that's what she said there should just lift off that's it say goodbye to your satellite this okay a little bit of a challenge here with this the DirecTV pole is actually thicker than what switched things around turns basically this inside bracket here around so that it's up against this flush and that gives me just enough space now to be able to get this over the top and wipe it down it'll it's not gonna go anywhere do the same thing with this bracket put the skinny piece on first put your clamping piece on okay so here's a better view of what I did with that bracket typically when you put this together this part of the bracket would be turned around so that these teeth would be facing the pole and grip it tightly but because this pole is a lot thicker and the screws weren't long enough to go the distance with this bracket turned around but with it facing this way I can still get good clamping action I'm not going to destroy this aluminum bar here this is gonna work out just fine now I checked Google Maps and just happen to know that our TV antennas you can't see them with trees and the clouds back there but throw over that way about 15 miles pretty good maybe okay next we're gonna want to install the pre app if you on here it has UHF combined that's the vo HF and VHF you could do VHF by itself and then this is the power outlet where it goes to the house so we need to make sure we get stuff plugged in in the right way where it won't work so before I put it together I want to use some of this silicon grease its dielectric it's a non conductive silicone sealer doesn't really dry up everyone right so I just want to put a little dab inside the connector I'm gonna fill it in like that that'll make it last for a long time so now let's go ahead and put it together I'm just gonna use a pair of pliers I want to have a good snug fit but you don't want to crush it either there we go they're just snugged up right there okay I want to mount this preamp right about in here this old cable tie is in the way so I'm just gonna cut that get it out of the way here okay now just like the antenna itself this preamps bolts were actually too small to fit around this pipe but I do have a large cable tie we're going to use and that will work just fine work that through cable tie part snug that up in a minute I want to go ahead and get this other so just like before I'm gonna put some of that silicone grease that dielectric grease into this cable this is the connecting piece connects the two antennas together it's got two bands I think ones for the UHF and the others for the VHF not really sure and just snug it up that's good go ahead connect this tighten up my cable tie here cut off the excess okay we're getting close okay so this is the cable that's running down into the house see it's way too long I'm gonna cut it off about right here we're gonna put a new end on it I think about right there looks pretty good okay so I'm gonna use my tool to put a new end on this just kind of pinch it down a little bit spin it around a few times what that should do is cut through both the plaque and also the yeah yeah see that's perfect it's just what we wanted it to do I'm gonna pray pull this braid down it's actually the ground and the shielding for this shove the cable into the end you want to shove it until the white inside is even with that bottom of the jacket okay okay now the next thing we need to do is cut this off this is way too long it should just be protruding a little bit above about there and now we should be able to stick it in the crimping tool yep it's just nicely and then crimp it give it a squeeze that's it nice and tight just like before we'll go ahead and put some of that dielectric sealer in here and then we'll attach it just go ahead and tighten down these wing nuts okay now it's time to install the preamp power supply it has to be connected someplace where there's power and then also connection to the general house cable wiring the cable to this TV is connected through this power strip that has a surge protector for the the cable if you don't have a surge protector that's no big deal just put it on any cable between the cable itself and the TV just screw this in and then plug it into the power strip or plug it into a wall outlet plug it into something so it gets power that's it you're gonna need to disconnect all of this stuff you don't need this anymore so here's the power let's unplug that Ethernet connection HDMI and then here's the cable port we're gonna need this nice when you take this part off so this is the cable that was attached to the back of the of the Direct TV DVR so I need to fish this out and get it up to the back of the TV okay so find the cable in this one says antenna cable in so you can pick an antenna up here or you can hook up your cable yeah yeah now we have to chant and scan for the chance set your chance [Music] information mortgage review I'm tool do
