has juice and he's wandered to La where a star-studded crowd has congregated on a Sunday night at the Staples Center he saw Cruz taking the fight on short notice already scheduled to appear here tonight looking for the upset [Applause] you okay you ready you ready the Bell round one Davis with eight first round Knockouts last one against Hugo Ruiz in February 2019 and Carson California's Cruz already lands a left hand for Cruz fighting the Lefty Davis he has faced only one southbound his eight most recent fights Diego Magdaleno who he starched in 53 seconds put himself on the map the same night Davis authored the 2020 knockout of the year against the previously unbeaten layout Santa Cruz one thing you have to like about what Cruz has done is at least he he came out and stayed true to his brand ripping the laptop the first thing he did so it shows you at least that moment didn't intimidate you enough for uh Davis he said he made weight easier for this fight than he has for any fight in a long time he hasn't had consecutive fights in the same weight class in his last five including tonight just as we thought the fight was going to start off you know Cruise pressuring who's trying to get in this punches in but Davis you know Davis just being the smarter fighter collecting data yeah low output high accuracy prodigious power Owen Davis stumbling there as Cruz and he has his fair share of supporters in attendance here in Los Angeles a huge Mexican-American contingent yeah more vocal than we would have thought In This Crowd and obviously there's a lot of geronte Davis supporters here across the country yeah a minute and a half left and Cruz with a great start here putting the pressure on Davis I like what Cruz is doing here he's not showing any type of respect towards Davis you know he came in knowing what he has knowing what he's capable of doing inside the ring and he's doing it so in this first round the head movement is important for him and you know it gave us what he does is we send it at the beginning of the show he collects data early in a fight not to be a boxer but to find a way to knock you out and when I mentioned Santa Cruz being previously undefeated he had never been stopped is what I meant to say thank you very much 45 seconds left here in the opening round and a great start for Esau Cruz and a nice nice left uppercut and he got left uppercut asked Leo Santa Cruz above that uppercut that punch could be foreshadowing for the future in this fight third Davis with the right hand and Bruce unloading on Davis and Davis again he's going the first round this was not rule to knock down it would be a slip uh yeah just a right hand that missed over the top and cruises off balance we're going to look at what these men need to do in this fight the keys to Victory first of all for uh Davis control the range using your jab which he tried to do in round one yeah the uppercut he already tried a couple of big ones and boy can he land that punch he has a terrific wide hook that punch could land against uh Cruz tonight move your head on the inside he did it very well and the left hook he came right out here throwing that punch so he'll keep cranking him up 15 850 of sold out Staples Center on a Sunday night for Javonte tank Davis against East Soccer Cruz I like doubt Cruz when he goes inside he moves his head and not not only that he's got a really tight close guard and he wanna he wants to keep doing that because David you know he's really smart in finding openings and much like his mentor Floyd Mayweather Jr Javonte Davis spends the first few rounds downloading that data and then goes to work and well he's been forced to go to work a little earlier thanks to Cruz you know Davis lands 40 of his power 47 of his power punches which is everything other than the jab he's very accurate when he decides to throw and that's how he gets those Knockouts Davis searching for his 17th straight knockout and we talked about Davis collecting data and he shows it you know he's a guy's not he's not throwing much punches again there it is really accurate punching let his arm go affect the punching from Davis no punch straight back let's go Floyd Mayweather Jr screaming keep boxing smart to Javonte tank Davis he saw Cruz right in front of him Davis able to evacuate jab and there's Davis [Applause] I was just gonna say part of the reason Cruz doesn't coming in is because he's worried about being countered by that right hook and look it happened just past the midpoint of the second Cruz attempts his own uppercut uppercut right hand from the Southpaw Davis oh man this whole building is waiting for one of those uppercuts to land by Davis they are waiting for the uppercut to detonate so they can explode and hands are free guys let him go back and to see what happens when it lands we'll choose to be able to take that punch or not and again the tight guard that the cruise has right now is really helping him you know for Davis not to land that open again don't don't swing don't swing ready let's go even though Cruz is the pressure Fighter's got to be a thinker in there he's got a lot of time to throw that jab when he when he needs to counter by Cruz that got Davis's attention as Davis looks to counter 30 seconds left here in the second round Davis good a version of those punches getting out of range with his head movement no punch no punch no punch let's go Davis has a fought a shorter fighter than him since he became a main event fighter so this is a different experience for him coming off the fight against Boris who was the tallest and there Davis launches the left and grooves along the ropes going to the body [Applause] this was one of those moments we look here it cranks up that left uppercut it kind of bounces off the glove and partially lands but didn't land perfectly for Davis wait don't try to go under right now here all right take a little deep little deep breaths here and Abner that he is not at all intimidated by the the fighter that is Javonte tank Davis and all of the highlights that he's put together no definitely not intimidated you know not showing any type of respect from Cruz and like Al pointed out not not a guy that throws a lot of jobs and he might not want to talk guys yeah exactly he doesn't want to risk that he'd rather come in with that close guard and try to work his way in that way Davis avoids the sweeping left hook although comes up Davis's body and Davis going to the body with a lightning quick combination [Applause] finds a home to the body Davis backing up Cruz putting the pressure closes the distance [Applause] and he understands that and you can see he's trying to make an effort he is he is but you got to give it to Davis too we talked about you know him having trouble or problems with guys but he's doing really good he's counter punching really well either fighter has been on the canvas in their respective careers counter right hook by Davis upstairs Javonte Davis felt this was a fight in which he could show the more of the nuances of his boxing skills and he's trying to do that against his rugged guy coming after him Barry hunter wanted to jab from him and uh Davis he hasn't gotten that on track as much as he would like probably left uppercut right hook combo Nation by Davis look good in the corner and he talked about it in the opening of the The Telecast uh that you know Davis can knock you out with different punches any punches and he has in the past exactly right and he does it in different ways classes different weights in his last five fights proved that he could carry the power up to 140. late into the fight against Mario Barrios under 30 left here in round three yeah and he needed that knock knockout [Applause] oh counter left hand bouncing off the nose of Cruz and gervante tank Davis now as Cruz doing what he has to do has to make it rough and double disrupt the Rhythm listen for the Bell listen for that Bell [Music] let's bring in Steve farhood Mo Javonte Dave is still a young fighter but he's won at least some form of a world title at three different weights 130 135 and 140. and look at the company he's keeping here some all-time grades listed here including a few fighters who were considered number one pound per pound in their primes like Chavez and Mayweather and Pacquiao tonight of course Davis defending his title at 1 35. [Music] foreign Calvin Ford instructing Davis to quote protect my Dome that being Davis has had and uh you know you talk about raw power but it's his timing the reflexes the speed and he says above all else it's his accuracy that is the key to his power there are key key of power is timing right because please position right right place and cruise I mean Davis does that really well and you know it's worth noting that you know Davis is showing a lot of movement in boxing uh Cruz has had problems with that in recent fights he's won the fight but has had a problem with collateral movement when he's facing it and Cruz trying to land that right and then the left to the body of Davis and Davis using lateral movement using defense lulling Crews into the ropes and while taking some shots to the body Chris is doing a good job of going downstairs even when Davis is on the move and that's a little surprising and catches Davis with a jab as Davis exited okay we're okay right here yeah you want to invest in the body of your cruise you want to break Davis down but Dave is using the ring really well using lateral movement really well not giving Coos an opportunity to really let go of his punches Davis says no what does that mean usually a minute and a half left here in the fourth Cruz has had a nice start though to this fourth round even while they have a sponsors don't do that again all right let's go referee Taylor warning Javonte Davis backing up Cruz coming forward High guard Davis initiates that attack and there again the left uppercut is a rare jab from Cruz he doesn't want to try that punch too often and the left uppercut tagging Crews on the jaw shoulder strike in the cleansea he does measured by Davis uh giving you something to talk about and and he does that from time to time to run through there this is not uh you know spending the rules a little bit I think uh that's a good point yeah why not oh there's that left uppercut again and Cruz wearing it well so far yeah so far and you know we I got caught saying when Leo Santa Cruz got knocked right when he got down he said so far he's dealing with the power pretty well in that moment he got blasted right to the body by Cruz trying to keep Davis from using his lateral movement and gave us now popping the left there's a wrong one the checkbook I gave us at the end of the round [Applause] Davis trying to get those uppercuts in and here he winds up with one and they're a very conscious effort by Crews to block that punch uh with that was kind of impressive wasn't it because that punch gets in and he tried to come back with his own Punch Yeah we have this whoa whoa whoa let's try to finish here on the body because that's what he's uh that's how he loses his power okay just keep working there keep the pressure on the body and then you change it to the top [Applause] Bell round five Esau Cruz senior fought champions for an enforest and Junior winner Cruz's grandfather Naval Cruz beat world Champs Pepino Cuevas and Alfredo escalera his older brother Diego is active so it is a fighting family the cruise family and Crews hoping to record the fight of his life here tonight pretty good wins by his granddad I wonder what brown Will Davis change the temple we sat against Leo Santa Cruz you know Leo was backing uh Davis back but you know Davis chose one push him forward you know later on in the rounds I'm sure he's going to do that against Cruise tonight now there was a lot more give and take Santa Cruz shot but you're right essentially it was the same thing lead left hand scores for Davis you know the straight leather left yeah the straight land left Marvel was Landing better than the upper country Davis tonight yeah there was a lot of Baldwin punching from oh and the jab and the right uppercut as Davis was leaning forward by Cruz Davis showing controlling sportsmanship there not restraint restraint is the word as Cruz goes to the body and again continues to attack the body so far right up for cut by Cruz so far 15 body punches landed by Cruz to 750 so Chris has gotten some work done downstairs for sure [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] another Warning by referee Taylor that's the one Davis to wrestle with Cruz let him go on the clinch I also want to point out Davis got a lot of new tattoos though great work and these two packs showing each other 30 seconds left here in the fifth lead right by Cruz and then the left uppercut on the inside by Davis and that chopping straight left again scores upstairs and now the speed of Davis on display it's been a good round for javonta Davis uh he's shown us a little bit more as Abner said kind of coming out of his offensive shell and good defense head movement accuracy great rebound for Javonte Davis as we head to round number six at Staples good job his mother standing the entire fight all night you gotta turn around keep feeding in the jab underneath gonna be wide open he's leaning his whole torso home his Lane good job good running after it when I need you to let go just don't push him down at some point that's vitamins no I know but I need you to put in my little bit here well here is gervante Davis landing and then doing what we've seen his uh promoter do a nice right right hand got in but the left hook um is made to miss by Davis okay [Music] round number six scheduled for 12. get off his head you know even though Cruz had five weeks notice for this fight he was training already as you pointed out for a 10 rounder on this card so they feel like he should be prepared for this match gave us a secondary Titleist at 135 pounds and they begin round six by throwing heavy leather and there's a sniper-like straight left hand by Davis and a right hand by Cruz and a left that's the shortest right hand I've seen Cruz fight land ever he's always a roundhouse right hand well Davis was right there yeah gave him the opportunity let's see if we see a little bit more volume from Chris this one I know we haven't because Davis has been doing the angles working angles really well not giving Crews a chance to let go of his hands Good Hat movement Cruz is throwing much more compact punches and has been doing that in better recent fights but in this one he's done a very good job of that right hook by Davis and then the exit so utilizing the angles like you mentioned Abner and again missing with the left hook was Cruz as defense on display by Tank Davis and that left uppercut Crews walked into it no punch no punch let him go it's always there waiting isn't it oh yes Davis is doing also he's standing right in the center of the Ring using the center of the Ring a little bit more we're just waiting for Crews to make a mistake Lee Right Hook by Davis [Applause] [Music] let him go let him go let that arm go straight left upstairs scores for Davis and that uppercut Again by the left hand and Cruz continues to come forward 45 seconds left Cruz tried his own uppercut there and it didn't get there but brought you through that with bad intentions Davis has landed many many uppercuts but yet not the right one a clean uppercut [Applause] no Cruz has been known for leading with his head and that hasn't necessarily been the issue here tonight no you know what he's he's kept a great High guard and he's had good head movements so he has you know he he's done a good job with that for the most part now Davis working from range looking to use angles in the jab as we head to the second half of this 12-round affair right there [Applause] in the early moments of that last round uh Cruz had a couple of good moments here's where he gets through that's that short right hand that we talked about unlike what Cruz normally throws but as Abner pointed out it was there for him and then later on in the round that's the uppercut and again it lands a little bit after your point not perfect right not yet clean not perfect I think if he would have you know Isaac Cruz would have been down but you know showing great chin Isaac Cruz he has yeah he has taken many shots from tank Davis and he's taking him well yeah you don't do it babe [Music] he's gonna fall [Applause] let's go seven of gervante Davis 24 Knockouts have come past the fifth round for esoc Cruz he has two Kos in the sixth or later you know Cruz has gone the distance four of his last five fights so while we talk about him as a power puncher uh he's often gone the distance and wet now that he's moved up to a different level of competition Let's uh go to Steve farwood for his unofficial scores Mo I think what the judges are seeing is that Davis is fighting mostly off the back foot as a result he's limiting his own punching and limiting cruises punching to one shot at a time so which shots of the more effective shots I think Davis's left hand has been the more effective punch I have him ahead four rounds to Two On Cue 58-56 nice counter left hand but as Steve was giving up the scores Davis was delivering a series of left hands but now Cruz corralling Davis momentarily in the corner left hand we talked about the fact that it's not just the uppercut he's throwing or David Strong a very good straight left hand right to the body by a cruise and let's be honest I mean let's talk about the pressure that Cruz is giving you know it could be discouraging also for Davis you know he's throwing a lot of punches no we're not allowed to punches infected punches and and there is no backing down in Cruise a couple of right hands to the body by a determined he saw Cruz and a couple of right uppercuts on the inside of it bringing the fight to javonta tank Davidson round seven Cruz is committed to that body work you know you got to give him credit for knowing that's a big part of his game a big right hand to the body by Davis and Davis now going upstairs right hook misses and we talk about Davis's versatility with power he's got a great ride okay Javonte tank Davis beginning to push the pedal to the middle but Drew's Landing a right hand all right Davis has downloaded the data as we talked about we talked about him changing the tempo of the fight and he's doing it in the seventh round pushing Cruz back choosing this punch as well leading with the right hook and a left hand that lands and he's almost freezing Cruz now with these shots they're all settled punches he said he knows setting up his punches really well and the head movement of Cruz less now good body work again that one may have strayed low though there's a right uppercut by Cruz goes to the body with the right round for Javonte tank Davis as we go to round eight right there [Applause] well uh some uppercuts are getting there and this one got there a very good one uh By gervante Davis and later on in the round we'll see more power punching by Davis straight left and and then he comes right with that right hook he's got great power in that right hook as well and good combination work by Davis yeah those were the setup punches that he was doing in this last round don't get desperate don't get desperate okay left and then right [Music] try to be intelligent when you go in there and do you know if you have to put the shoulders and put it in and downstairs keep working downstairs those are working those are working for you remember left and right and the body only fighter To Go the Distance against tank Davis Mexico's Herman and moraz in 2014. he's still active 64 wins 59 losses three trucks [Applause] and what a journey this fight is proving to be as we are in round number eight Davis targeting the head of Cruz Crews using the little more head movement and trips I like what David does at moments he uses Cruise pressure as an advantage [Applause] straight left hand picking off he saw Cruz [Applause] and the matadors putting it on Crows fans standing on their feet again anytime we see a surge in the offensive Javonte tank Davis they feel like something's coming and why not it often does with Davis 24 times it has happened in his career come on let's go right now David's trying to Blind Cruz with the jab before him delivering that lethal left again the uppercut by Cruz and because Davis has not gotten forced against the ropes almost at all in this round he's been very effective in the center ring where you know he does better work and yet you talk about low output both of them with a minute left here in the eighth yeah really disciplined in this fight Dave is showing us showcasing really different a variety of combinations of boxing skills she's choosing his punch as well I mean icing on the kick for tonight will be just a knockout and I'm going to let him get body work a moment ago Again by Cruz he's landed 30 body punches now he's he's done good work there it just is that enough to make a difference in this fight that's the question final 30 seconds of the eighth Cruz delivering some uppercuts they wrestle again at the ropes no knockdowns and Davis Warren Cruz remember it the way and his wife said you want to turn it into the dirty fight I'll make it a dirty fight and we haven't that's not been the case but there's been a lot of wrestling a lot of grappling as we head to round nine in the uppercut by Cruz he said if you can do it I can do it [Applause] [Music] and when you talk about low I'll put high accuracy you know that Davis took a page out of his mentors Playbook Floyd Mayweather [Applause] and you know Davis has long reminded us and told us guess what I'm not just a big Power puncher I have boxes kills an Airy avoids the left hook uh for crew of Cruz but you know Cruz had good moments in this round and and there he rips a uppercut or right to the body then a nice uppercut an interesting combination that's kind of a Mike tyson-like combination and uh Cruz made that a pretty close round I thought you could make a case for him winning that round Davis has been called a mini Mike Tyson and when you talk about his boxing Acumen of course another aspect of what made Floyd Money Mayweather so good as we begin round number nine Davis's secondary title at 135 pounds [Applause] [Music] and Crews going to the party again showing his hand speed but it's Davis that landsat sweeping left Cruz has never been down as a pro neither has Davis and kuza hasn't shown signs of him being hurt in any in any given time not at all he keeps coming keeps looking for that fight unofficial scores Steve Farah gave the last round two he saw Cruz gave us ahead by two on his unofficial scorecard to make a strong case of Cruz won that last round and Davis doing some really good work here uh from distance [Applause] Davis utilizing the range and all delivers that right uppercut right when Cruz was closing the gap right when he stepped in Davis chose to throw that up because he barely missed great great shot from Davis averages 32 punches strong throughout he's a little bit above that tonight not by a lot but a little bit and see Cruz is trying to get inside he's trying to work he's trying to do his thing but Dave is fine and you have to appreciate the boxing of Javonte tank Davis and the sound utilizing the distance his jab the uppercut making a miss making him pay well said Mo yes sir under a minute left here in round number nine straight back straight back and the key thing for Davis is he stayed off the ropes where Cruz can kind of pin in there and work the body [Applause] froze has only been defeated once that was via decision [Applause] lead left scores for Davis 30 seconds left in the night very low right hand by Cruz he's throwing some South of the Border a few more of those he might get a warning but a lot of the punches are legal to the body to be strong there's a straight left right hook to the body by Davis crafty combination counter right hook land straight left Lance for Davis [Applause] listen for the Bell gentleman [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Davidson in that last round you know we talk about the variety of punches there's a left counter as Cruz came in and then he would show us some combination punching which people don't always associate with him but he can punch very well in combination the uppercut and then the jab that's a unique combination that you don't see every day and it gets there for Davis we're good no I need you to just pick and go pick and go here I know we already know that we already know that if you go inside with him right Boxing Day [Applause] round number ten [Applause] and it's amazing when you have a power puncher like Davis when you see a 10th round you think oh maybe it's a boring fight oh he's not fighting well my but he's showcasing a lot tonight those are some nice right Hands by Cruz he had a good moment there for himself thank you there's a right hand that lands for isak cruise [Applause] lead right hook to the body scores for Davis right hook upstairs lands for Davis Davis wants to move forward in this round and there he is he's going to do it even though Cruz has started out to run pretty well and it's amazing how he still has power towards the end of the round at the end of the fight I'm sorry well the last time he competed in this weight class he scored a knockout in the 12th and final round against Euro yorkas Gamboa of course against Barrios it came in round 11. yeah so really there's never urgency from Davis to look for a knockout it will come for Cruz he has no Knockouts past the seventh as we pointed out when he stepped up against better competition he started going the distance for the last five fights so he hasn't shown that power as you point out later in the fights [Applause] [Music] did you see those moments where Cruz passes I mean he could go in and throw punches but it's it's almost a No-No you shouldn't because he knows he's going to be counter punch yeah exactly and it's fascinating how Cruz only picked certain spots where he wants to jab his way wow punches from Nissan Cruz but gervante Von Davis takes a step back resets pause with the jab that left hook by kuzno was the best punch he's he's landed in the fight and Davis shaking off that right left and Davis now in front of Cruz right hand of the body by Esau Cruz right hook lands for Davis [Applause] at this point you got to take risks if your Coos you take the risk you go in there and you affected I mean being you're being risky but it listen it's paying off that's paying off in this portion of the round and the championship rounds are straight ahead as Cruz goes back to the body [Applause] that was an interesting round to boxing Davis early in that round did some great work with the right hook he just has such an excellent hook and that's one punch he's been able to get around that guard of of Cruz with but Cruz ended up having a pretty good round very you know he's working the body and here comes that left hook that was a good left hook he landed it wasn't perfect but he was able to get it in and he kept punching away in there ripping the body shots that's the way now you already demonstrated that you're here with them when you go in more punches okay let's go you're he's not that big of a figure you are let's go legendary Mexican Champion Julio Cesar Chavez toldy saw Cruz he has the courage needed to defeat gervante tank Davis well that's the second time he hits him with the great body shot walking in Cruise gotta keep throwing that body shot [Applause] there it is and of course the fans supporting Cruz appreciating the Bodywork there's a right hand and again just bounced off Javonte tank Davis face but it's Cruz putting the pressure and delivering the offense I like how Crews changed it up there he threw a nice body shot and then he kind of almost tricked Davis that he was gonna throw it again down there that's where he got him on top [Applause] triple jab by gervante Tank Davis [Applause] there's that lead right uppercut that lands for Davis [Applause] body right hook to the body by Davis and Ducks underneath that sweeping right by Cruz and our unofficial scores Steve Farah as Cruz making it a fight and you know the longest Davis has gone is into the 11th round with Gamboa the 12th round I apologize and Cruz is 1-0 in 12 Rounders also a fight where Gamboa fought with a rupture to kill these tennis yeah staggering that he was able to get through that [Applause] a minute left here in the 11th this is a close round early good work by Cruz and then Davis landed some good shots neither man's been real busy close fight it is I know what's going on the dad was working for you here I'm not telling you you have to use it just protect yourself a potential hand injury Abner and uh three minutes left the Mexican-American crowd chanting ccueda in the 11th yes you can do it for Esau Cruz and he's got to go out there and just let his hands go this is the last round really close fight full-throating proud at Staples Center
