[Music] hello i'm theresa welcome back to my channel today i'm going to be doing a bit more printing not so much focusing on the techniques of printing but more taking a look at different surfaces that you can print on all the different types of paper that you might have around the house that you could use i'm going to make this little journal today just using lots of different types of paper and cord that i've got lying around and i'll show you how to easily bind it into this little journal notebook at the end as well really simple techniques using a few stencils a couple of mark making tools and some acrylic paint so i'm going to move this out of the way get set up and i'll be back to show you how it's done a lot of people ask me about what is the best type of paper or cardstock to use when gel printing and my answer really is it doesn't make a great deal of difference there are certain things to avoid glossy photo paper will stick to your plate don't use that but anything else really you know within reason can be used things with a smoother surface are going to give a clearer print obviously if you've got a highly textured surface only the areas that make contact with the plate are going to actually lift the print that can give some nice interesting effects but if you're looking to get a fairly accurate representation of what is on your plate then something that is smooth is always sort of more recommended than that with the texture and today's project really is is hopefully just to show you um the different sort of things you can print onto the different effects that you will get as to whether it's plain or patterned or toned or white and and we're just going to make a nice little journal out of the random prints that we've made today that you can then go on to use you can use it as a notebook you can collage in it you can tear it up and collage with it um you know you know it's but you could just look at it as a reference even at sort of samples of different things that we use today so i've had a rummage around both here in my craft room and throughout the house and i've come up with a selection of different papers so to start with we've got the the simple printer copier paper this is just you your cheap 80 gsm standard copier paper comes in a pack of a thousand sheets pick it up pretty much anywhere i use this a lot it's really good it works well so i've got a couple of sheets of that next i've got this brown paper here and this was packaging um i had probably a delivery from somewhere like amazon you know they scrunch up paper in there to fill the box and this was actually a huge long piece and it was it's sort of perforated i guess it comes on a big role in the packing department so i've just got a couple of bits of those it's got a bit of a crinkle on it i don't mind that that's probably going to add to a bit of texture to the prints that we get but i like that it's a nice white paper so we've got some of that also in the sort of selection of packing things is this neutral paper here it looks like some sort of recycled paper got a bit of a gray tone some flecks again this was on a big long piece that was sort of scrunched up in a box so we've got a bit of texture in there so i've just grabbed a bit of that next i've got some paper here we've got um this is just some black paper i'm gonna see what happens there how bright the colors are gonna be the paints that i'm using today have a bit of translucency to them so who knows we'll find out what sort of results we get on a black paper and this is just like a craft paper better quality obviously than this that was for the packing this is more for drawing on but again just a nice tone we've got some of that next up i've got some vintage magazine pages i've got some old magazines these but this one's from 1956. i like the colors um you know it has got that lovely aged effect and of course it's got this print already on it so be interesting to see how much of that shows through whether that enhances um the prints that we get today so a couple of sheets of this here i've got a scrap of this is some scrap booking paper it was a 12 by 12 sheet obviously i've used a bit for something but again it's fairly neutral i'm sticking with neutral things today but it's got this text on here it's got a stripe on the other side let's see what happens when we print on that i've got a nice quality piece here of ivory i'm going to say heavyweight paper lightweight cardstock but again it's not white it's you know but it's got a nice rich color let's see what that does as well you know it's a smooth surface we can print on that i have also from the vintage drawer some music um score this one this page here is seen better days but that's fine you know we're going to cut it down but again if you know we print onto this we've got the music notes this one here is a little bit smaller scale but fits in nicely we'll give that a go if you don't have things like that you may have something like this this is just some graph paper double-sided graph paper i'm going to print on that i know that you can go online and download music score paper and graph paper you know print it out yourself this is just some that i've got i've got a page here that's just been torn from a sketchbook this is like a nice sort of cartridge paper good weight a sort of off-white color and finally i've got this piece of ledger paper here this is not a vintage larger paper it's just like a regular pad that you can buy nowadays in a stationery store but again just got a bit of interest it's only printed on the one side but that doesn't matter but as you see i've got a whole selection different types of patterned and plain papers here all with a very sort of neutral color scheme no reason why you can't print on different colored papers at all it will obviously in some respects affect um the results of your printing if you can see the paper through the you know the original colour of the paper but it's all about trying it out and having it go today i'm not going to be focusing so much on the actual printing technique at the end of this video as always with my jelly printing videos i will link to a playlist of all the ones that i've done lots of ideas for specific printing techniques using different types of products materials mark making tools i'm going to basically be just whizzing through at speed making some prints on these um papers i have a selection of things here i used these when i made the cushion cover recently if i think on i'll link up to that in the corner so i've got some sequin waist this is just some plastic packaging it was out of a box that had glue sticks in it we've got some corrugated card we've got with a wavy pattern or your standard straight and of course some bubble wrap all good for creating some pattern and texture on your gel plate also got a selection of stencils shopboard stencils this large one here is annoying me it keeps getting tangled up on everything but you know just some different patterns um i think let me see this one i don't know where this one came from all the rest are from joggles but just different designs may use all of them may just use some of them but we're just going to be creating some simple prints and using acrylic paint today and then we're going to take a look at what the results are with these different papers and when i'm finished i'm going to trim the papers down and we'll bind them up into a little journal paints i'm using today are mostly the decoart media fluid acrylics doesn't matter what brand acrylic paint you use try them all out i've got cobalt turquoise hue hansa yellow light blue green light vermilion quinacridone magenta and green gold just toes the selection they're some of my favorite colors like those i've also got white i've run out of white in that brand so i've just got the americana acrylic paint in white it doesn't really matter as i say which brand you use doesn't matter whether they're all from the same brand or not just mix and match so what i'm going to do is move these out of the way i'm going to set up my plate today i'm going to be using my larger 8 by 10 inch plate but again use whatever you've got if you've got a smaller plate you can make smaller pages or you can piece your paper down several times until you've covered it it's entirely up to you i remember the day when we started talking we were kids and i knocked down all of your mobiles but you did not seem to mind at all we took our bikes to the lake after school this day and skipped many storms from the beach and one thing you said was this [Music] there's too much to be done [Music] haven't changed a bit in my heart your words have never been wrong you want my own safety zone you're solid like a granite stone [Music] [Music] i don't really see [Music] i know where we belong [Music] haven't changed a bit in my [Music] my own heart zone [Music] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] like i remember the day when we started talking we were kids and i knocked down all of your [Music] skip many stones from the beach and one thing you said was this i've cleared away my plate and my stencils and all the mark making things because you know i've printed on a selection of papers and most of them i've done on both sides i think there's possibly the odd one or two that i might have missed a second side on but as you can see we've got varied results on varied different papers different substrates and all that i need to do now there's one that i didn't do on the back um is to trim these down to a uniform size and get them ready to bind into a little mini journal i've still got a selection of these papers that are unprinted and i'm thinking i might just sort of intersperse printed and plain ones in there just to give a little bit of variety really so what i'm going to do is have a look at the sizes of the papers that i've got cut them down to an appropriate size ready for binding and i'll come back and just show you the basics of how to do that i've trimmed all my prints to eight inches by five and three quarter inches and i folded them all in half and as it turned out i thought i don't actually really need to put some of the plain papers in there this is quite a nice just little pocket size journal as it is now you can choose to make a cover out of something a little bit sturdier i've gone ahead and used this piece of um this was the cream sort of heavyweight paper lightweight card it's quite sturdy and i think that's going to be absolutely ideal to use as my cover so that's the one i'm popping on the outside as you can see as you sort of slot them together the edge becomes a little bit uneven but we can trim that afterwards once we've bound it no problem at all and i might just round the corners off with a corner punch again once it's all been trimmed the binding is going to be a simple pamphlet stitch binding easiest way i find to do this is i get myself the yellow pages just something that i can wedge these pages in they're all nicely lined up that fold in the middle is lined up and i just got a piece of card here that has got some holes punched in it evenly spaced this is what i used for my large journal videos that i was doing i'm going to use three of the holes don't need so many as a smaller book than the previous journal so i'm just going to line that up centrally so that this middle hole is in the middle and using a pokey tool go right through all those layers of prints i'm going to make a hole in the one above and make a hole in the one below the center and those three holes will be perfect for binding this small booklet together now you can use twine book binding threads some embroidery silks i've got so this is some linen um repair thread i like it it's quite sturdy and works really well for me and you want i know about twice as much as the height of your little booklet that will be more than enough for stitch you want to thread it through a needle this is quite a heavy duty needle i've got for i just keep this from a book binding but you're not using many pages today so if you haven't got a huge one don't worry about it and starting in the middle you want to go through that center hole to the outside leave yourself a little tail behind there for tying off we're going to go back in through one of the other holes like so and we're going to go straight across to the top hole back out to the outside and then just keeping that thread out of the way i'm gonna go back in through that center hole where we began and i'm going to end up with one thread on either side of this long stitch in the middle we can tie our two ends over the top of that long stitch to secure it down knot it two or three times just so you know that it's secure and trim the ends and there you have it just a little neatly pamphlet stitch bound miniature journal i'm just going to go over to my trimmer and just trim these pages completely flush and then i'm going to take just a corner round a punch and round the corners off just for a nice little finish and here's my finished little gel print journal i've just made a closure band here i'd got an off cut from this piece that i'd used as the cover and i just trimmed it down to an inch wide and matted it onto a bit of black card and then just folded it around for it for a secure fit and taped it at the back with some double-sided tape as you can see i've neatened up the pages at the edges and just rounded them off with a corner rounder punch and i hope that this just gives you an idea of what to do with some of the prints that you've got i hope that it clears up the issue of what can you print on because you know the answer is pretty much anything really we've got different effects with all the different colors and surfaces of paper that we've got in this journal here and then you know you can just use this for all sorts of things you know if you make atcs or collect atc's you could stick them in use it like a little mini scrapbook you could stencil and paint on here work actually onto the pages you could collage on you could pop stickers in here you know it really is um you know it's up to you what will you do with it if you've got some crafty friends this sort of thing would make a lovely little gift easy to pop in an envelope and send it through the post to somebody and i you know really enjoyed just doing this i might go through my draw mustache of the unused prints that i've got and make up a few more of these because they're quite quick and easy just to bind up into a small journal but as always if you enjoyed this video please leave me a thumbs up don't forget to check out the playlist for all the other gel plate technique videos at the end if you haven't been there and taken a look before but for now that's all bye when we [Music] down all of started mobiles but you did not seem to mind at all we took our bikes to the lake after school day and skip many stones
