welcome along today we are going to do a transit of Gatwick controlled airspace and what better way to do it but having a Gatwick controller in the right seat welcome Sam he's going to make it all look easy no pressure welcome aboard and a warm welcome to my new followers and subscribers in my little corner of YouTube here I share the joys of private flying and also the things that sometimes don't go so well as always before any flight I run through the six pages on my checklist from the exterior walk around through to the vital actions just before takeoff fuel will change to the right tanker I normally cut these out of my films because they're obviously a little bit repetitive cover after heat cold I just took a control check we're going to attempt to cross London Gatwick Class D controlled airspace we're very close here at Biggin Hill so things are going to happen very quickly okay so we're going to get an early call we're sending a takes 8 minutes or so to get over there so get an early call in well we'll cruise slightly slower so it doesn't really get much time I might get you to change the DME if you can - would you be able to do that once we get early eighties they're done yeah once we've changed frequency if you would mind yeah okay in the UK to enter Class D airspace you must get a clearance I know that's different from procedures in some other countries brief takeoff runway two one begin that would be right turn after departure we've got a noise abatement turn two two two zero straight after takeoff if any the problem on the runway we will stop the form ATC we've lifted we'll try on our back and if we can't know about we will select the glide and look for a field off the nose any question [Music] shuffle scurry around might see one right turn to take off here far three throw to be to 12 months right sir here take off two one go for strumming I know how the flesh in corn in there again okay okay feet to the floor your phone these are in the green in Cherokee traffic inbound for the field of being a filmmaker s piece coming alive just 15 okay look out for three charities outbound requests to charities an assist to walk five to a bounce in the field downtown from the fields to thank you being able to be admired to one in public I'll live to 191 continue to triple the glide 41 qnh one zero zero to seven again I did a little encoding ever I'll just be at nine to one so 303 Bucks are up temperatures pressures and the green altimeter wants every absolutely what the derivative ever get EP 9 conference right up to the Bravo basic report passing chemicals your lady active or delivery Lonnie report passing sent me an hour leveling at a few thousand girls with your brother officer me likewise full parking kami basic service whatever you funny humming altitude 2,000 feet Wilco conference for me zero is closed departing aircraft make initial contact on frequency one to one decimal 8 surface went three two zero one zero visibility what's zero kilometer or more 1806 gabite plus 2 th one zero zero feet the poet receipt of information picked up and advised aircraft type sponsors contact get a Twix information pickup driver sits traffic just there as well yeah there it goes alright Rochard Sam's an air traffic control watch manager in the tower at Gatwick and he's told them we're coming through so the terminal controller already has most of our flight details if you happen to be calling up blind as would normally be the case you'd probably need to pass your information over the radio Gatwick director golf Bravo Hotel Oscar Romeo request Sound Transit Hotel Oscar Romeo's four three seven five run coward Kieran H is 1 0-0 ain't squawk 3 7 1 5 qnh one zero zero eight office Romeo 3 come on five one three seven five one go Oscar oh man normally coming this way Gatwick clears you overhead the field via the Buckland visual reference point that's what Sam and I have briefed for but as always in aviation you have to expect the unexpected I mean what everything looking for southbound routing overhead willow go for scrub what gloomier thank you if you can arrange your flight to route to the east of the field by about a mile mile and a half two thousand feet the fi0 traffic Southview by a team of two thousand feet routing west mountain range two routes to the east of the field approximately 1.5 miles not about 2,000 feet VFR and looking for traffic ovals for me so he wants us to be east yeah so just this side yeah just east of the final approach oh we've got a watch out for Red Hill aren't we yeah so I suggest we go to Buckland and then correct or you let me record Piper pa-28 co-host Robin thank you I haven't been explicitly cleared to transit the Red Hill ATZ so I continue to Buckland to route around it however the controller checks my routing when he sees me continuing westbound I mean I'm presuming what these having me to go to Buckland oh no problemo to the east of the field to the gala careful will be on your right Roger you'd like me to route to the east of Red Hill go for scrubbing no to the youth of Gatwick Roger that will take me through the Red Hill 87 I think I could have been given a more explicit routing here however we check again with the controller and finally we're all on the same page he's kidding if you don't let turtle fulfill vow that will keep you clear a theoretical local flying area another point is I hadn't heard the words you are cleared to enter controlled airspace so I thought I'd best check that too if you're ever in any doubt always ask and go Oscar they confirm their 20 controlled airspace have none of a 2,000 feet CFO three times of controlled airspace not about 2,000 VFR coursework okay great never fly having wind that was a weird term it's not the standard routine that we return 36 left there's probably nothing on final or be effective that's why we keep them one a half miles to the east so we don't need to call the tower see well the tower frequency in there one 245 radio on I'm not sure I think will probably remain on this frequency actually for the whole transit okay come on try million I control their face radar control over radar control service Kovas Columbia that really confused me yeah that didn't run in south of Gatwick Airport by a mile as a police helicopter operating at 1500 traffic not yet seen look it got what's funny this helicopter might be one of the reasons why we were routed to the east of the field rather than directly overhead I've got the traffic helicopters overhead Crawley is it yeah just about two o'clock it's just slightly low again nothing at the holding point we're not about to 2,400 feet you can read director alone about 2,400 feet reading routes direct will okapis grumpy me that police helicopter is here got it now west of you now by mile and a half one thousand for three hundred traffic inside go for a meal so here we can it's all doctor I'm here just approaching here to control their faith nothing female tried to affect can be a basic service report changing treatment leaving controlled airspace request frequency changed to Shaun approach one two three that's more one five zero that's approved by service terminates could be good they go for score Mia's call setup so Sam we can relax a little bit now Sam works you're at you're a watch supervisor at in the tower so people might not realize that what who we were talking to there was a controller based in spawning them of the area control center you work in the tower that meets your basic can't wait that's right yeah so when we have when we have our own transit or we need to speak to the approach control is this all by phone yeah phone line yeah people don't realize that either do they that you've got to pick up the phone talk to someone that's right so do you have to do anything with arriving or departing traffic to make route before a spam can like me to come through no we don't we'll just pass traffic information on you but what we'll do is we will be looking for a gap so we pax get out gaps in arrivals means we have a camp in the office to get the porches away so a single runway it's usually it's six mile so front six mole caps that means every impound aircraft will be spaced six miles that week and they want departure away in each arrival now if we're really busy inbound but we're not very busy out house which means they are crossing a VFR transit in a pack where the aircraft will find a freelance part is very tricky so it usually look for a six mile gap now we could ask the approach controller to give a gap let the transit across but usually it's just naturally it just occurs naturally we are have a gap in traffic or we would be operating one in one out so what we call one it went out which is six mile gaps one depart one departure lands one sorry one departure goes one arrival lands we just do that what anyone else know we call it so usually there would naturally be a gap there yeah for a departure and we usually cross the transit so we have a departure on the roll or about to rock so what do you guys think about people like me coming coming on the radio and asking for a transit through it just depends on our workloads my work goes high and we're very very busy and we're moving 55 lemurs off the runway sometimes we just don't have the spare capacity to take transit it could be the tower doesn't have the capacity to say the transit or the approach control it doesn't happen faster yet the tower would so we both both controllers have to have capacity to take the transit through work the transit so that's the first thing if we've got the work through is simple the weather the weather is also a big factor in it we can offer the through the eighty said unless we have five higher visibility it's 1500 feet or greater and the cloud ceiling is not the cloud base right correct and it's John explained ceiling because that's another misconception too so cloud ceiling is broken or overcast cloud base is few or scattered scattered layer so free of scattered a thousand which we could clean through if it was broken up we good and there are stricter rulings on now now we used we were looking at the weather this morning and it was it was whether that would have been suitable to come through Gatwick but it was scattered at 12 so that would have been would have met the AR guidelines for Class D transit but we chose not to come through I mean I mean my reasoning for that was we decided to wait until he got better because scattered you wouldn't see much through it and it would be on top of it if we got a clearance at say 1900 feet be on top of it would be able to see much of the ground so that was my basis for not taking dealt trying it until it lifted sufficiently yeah so really when you transit you want to be below the cloud because you're gonna have to be able to see an inbound aircraft I suppose you also need to take a reading on the competence of the pilot that's calling it - because we've all heard pilots on the radio they sounded a bit like I did just now front get a chance it who don't sound as if they know what they're talking about this they're not reading back there it says he correctly they're miss reading squawks I misread the squawk I didn't you 'only didn't hear hear the score he read me clearly enough it's a red flag to a controller isn't it if you're unable to do those things yeah it's a it's a busy busy of airspace Gatwick when we're really busy we really need pilot to be spot-on three backs fly as well because there's a lot of workload for us to get the to get the traffic through since you're a lot slower than sniper coming out the is but the only thing we we know as controllers is your voice yeah so if you sound like you're not confident and you don't know what you do then you miss stuff then our perception is that the pilot might not know what they're doing yeah [Music] come on squarely upon to want to laugh laughter I remember two months later line 23 1 0 ain't no it's laughs Columbia buggering this up a bit [Music] city to the end ok thank you so much for watching I'm currently working on a new miniseries which explores how I prepare for a flight that's coming soon until then safe flying my friends [Music] you [Music]
