hi there folks I'm going to give you a look at a little piece of firewood harvesting equipment which I use and this is a gasoline powered portable capstan winch and it's manufactured by a Canadian company called portable winch incorporated and basically what it is it's a little Honda four-stroke engine there and it's coupled to a 100 to one reduction gearbox and a capstan winch which is this component right here there's the the nameplate on it portable winch company and they're in Sherbrooke Quebec and the little winch comes equipped with a couple of hooks on the backside here I got the forestry kit I've had this for a couple years now and you can put a strap onto the hooks there and attach it to an anchor point in this case I've got an anchor to a tree comes with a second strap the forestry kit also comes with a rope bag you can see here and the rope bag has a bunch of this non-stretch rope and the Rope is basically a this is not a wound cord rope the rope is actually fibers inside which run continuously straight from one end to the other so it's it is very little stretch which is what you want for a load pulling situation like this the Forester kit also comes with a a snatch block here which you can use in conjunction with your other strap if you want to change the direction that you're pulling or to multiply the force that the machine is exerting and this is I think a hundred feet of rope I think that's about the maximum that they say you should use so I've got the rope strung out here over to a tree which I'm going to pull out and we'll just have a walk into the woods here it's probably not even worth pulling this tree up with the winch because it's kind of close by but it's more or less for the purposes of showing you how things work here we've got the little spruce tree down the kit comes with this choker chain as well got that looped around the end of the piece of material here and very important piece of material that comes with this kit is this nose cone and the nose cone keeps what you're pulling from being snagged up as you're moving it out through the woods and looking inside there we've got a up there which I gonna have to undo and we got the hook at the end here which we're going to hook onto the chain after we put the nose cone around the log and then I'll show you that in a second okay here's the here's the nose cone set up on the piece of wood we've got our chain run us through the hole in the end of the nose cone and we've got it hooked up with the hook here which is tied on to the rope now we're going to go back and fire up the winch and pull this piece material out of the woods alright let's have a look at some of the controls on the winch we've got our ignition switch off and on gas cap on the top of the fuel tank which is sitting here a recoil start our throttle here down is slow up to the top is a high speed here's the shut off for the fuel tank that's the off position that's the on position and over here we've got the choke that's full choke that's choke off so with everything in the correct positions that's fire it up see what it sounds like all right the basic idea behind a capstan winch is that friction provides provided for by the tightening of the rope actually on the pulley there's a guide out front here we're on the rope through this guide then we wrap the rope around the pulley we run it up through this guide here so basically as long as there's no tension applied to this piece of rope the rope that's on the pulley will slip as soon as we apply tension on this the Rope will grab and the winch will pull that's just kind of a quick demonstration of how the the friction of the rope on the pulley actually locks the rope on and provides the necessary traction on the rope for to pull the load out so I'm going to move the camera back a little further and actually I think I'll go over to the log and we'll show you some footage of it being pulled there you go it pulled that piece out pretty easily it'll carry quite a load that winch I have to go back and look at the specs to find out what it is really rated for but a good little machine they're not cheap though they do have a feature which is kind of handy they have an automatic shutoff in the engine should you tilt the machine too far where the oil sump is not pressurizing the engine it'll automatically shut itself down so like I said good little machine useful for small-scale firewood forestry lots of other purposes pulling any kind of a load out or you don't have access to for instance an electric winch this is usable anywheres where you can carry it and as for the specs is for weight and how much it'll pull I would suggest you go have a look at the manufacturer's website if you want to see any further details or information on that because I'm pointing me regurgitating what they have to say anyway thanks for watching we'll talk to you later
