all right I decided to do one more really simple turning before I see the doctor which is in only a couple days but this should be simple and at the end of this video I'll let you know what he had to say maybe he's going to put me on r r for a while I just have no idea but I got this piece of wood at a garage sale probably five years ago I don't even know for sure what it is I think it might be Maple and I think it has some Burl in it well this could be a candidate for a bull from a board but I don't have time to do that I do have time to make maybe a a big plate or a platter that's the plan it's about 15 by 15 but it has a big saw cut it came with that it also has a big notch in here it came with everything you see has a bar conclusion and there's a crack in that I don't know how far it goes I'm going to try to cut a round circle out of this and get the largest platter we can out of this so I'm going to go ahead and get it bandsawed mounted on the lathe and will make us a real quick turning I've got it mounted on the worm screw and I got it down to about 12 and a half but the thing of it is I've got a notch here I didn't clean up I don't know what's going to happen there I know it's going to be less than 12. not sure what it's going to end up but it's still going to be a nice size little platter so I'm going to keep the tail stuck against it because the worm screw doesn't go in all that far but if I went too far I'll have a hole in the bottom of that hole and we know we don't want to do that so I've got the lathe running about 700 RPM and I got my 5 8 Bowl gouge we're going to get this round and we'll get a shape on the bottom and get it flipped around sounds pretty easy [Applause] thank you well another piece that is planned out on the Fly I've stopped I looked at the possibility of putting a recess in here but looking at all of this grain here I'm not going to do it it'll just break it up too much I will hot glue a Tenon onto here and that's how we'll finish it I'm gonna go over it with a negative scraper right now and decide if this is okay I know I can't turn past that so it pretty much has to be okay let's just kind of smooth it up and have a good look at it [Music] foreign pretty flat right here because I hope she fills this with my favorite cookies and I don't want it tipping over wow that is some nice grain yeah I would not want to I would not want to break that up right here I like it keep thinking I should put some CA in here maybe I'll put some down this direction and if it comes out that just means I need to clean this up some more I'll be back after I do that and then we'll sand this and I've already got a Tenon ready I'll hot glue that on and we'll get it flipped around you can't see it on the edge here but I feel this crevice with some shavings and some thick CA glue the star Bond and I'm not going to fill this I don't think I have to when I turn the top side I may have to do more work on that hopefully I don't have to take anything off the diameter I'm going to go ahead and get this side sanded I'm going to start with 120 grit we'll get it sanded up to 400 and I'll hot glue that Tenon on and we'll get it flipped around running in Reverse at 300 RPM and like I said that's 120 hertz all right so I'm using a four inch disc here just for added support because of the diameter of this piece you can see I've got it flipped around now and the first thing I want to do is see how much stock I have here and that's actually has not changed that much we're still at least an inch so had holes drilled down no more than a half so that's going to be an indicator when I'm getting close to the bottom so once I hit that I want to start making sure I double check everything I don't think I want a half inch bottom maybe a 3 8. so this is just going to be a simple turn this out and get a shape on it we should have a nice little cookie tray let me get that face shield on again and what kind of our family can run now I'm going to stick with 700 it's still maybe out of balance a little bit because that's not flat [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] from about this point inwards I'm flat down there so I I don't really want to go deeper here yet until I get this out of the way and I can measure it really good but this definitely a chops I'm gonna go ahead and move the tail stock back I kind of played around with this area here looking at this spark inclusion and what it was doing with the rim and and over here I think I'm going to stop right where I have it and I'm probably 3 8 of an inch right here I don't really want to take any more of that because it's going to become a really big hole I think I'll probably end up taking this off and maybe put some coffee grounds in there let's see hey I don't know if I should use decaf or not and I see what I have so I think what I'll do right now is go ahead and get this down to size and that's going to be blending from here down to past that hole where that hole is drilled just a little bit let's go ahead and do that and uh and maybe I'll work on something here go back to the 5 8 full Dodge and see what we can do I think it should work out 740 RPM [Music] ah much much better it didn't really change that can I see this really just amazing grain it's just going everywhere why it's not cleaning up like you'd like it because it's so swirly but we'll get it [Music] you know all I see here is and I feel it in that spot right there here to here and we have it foreign [Music] maybe right there but I think I'm so close that we'll want to use the negative rake scraper here I'm gonna go put a new Burr on this and we'll get this all finished up let's see how this works all right I don't want to do too much here because like I say I want to work on that I just wanted to make sure it felt like a nice blend coming down here so I'm going to take the Chuck and all off so I can stand this up and try to make it look uh well it looks good the way it is but that's not going to be what I want here with that bark getting ready to pop off all right this is not real exciting and I have not really done it that much but I'm just getting some medium thick brown CA in here that's just in case it kind of gets into wooden stains that it'll look more like the rest of this if you have clear the finished will not really penetrate the ca so it'll really stand out a lot which I don't want I'm getting the ca in these lower spots and I'm sprinkling some coffee over that coffee grounds just going to Tamp it in I'll do this put it in back in the lathe turn that area down if it needs it again then I'll do it again this is real thick I wish I had fine grind and I might even hit it with some accelerator so that's what I'll do with this and hopefully it looks good when we're all done we'll see how this cleans up and we'll use the negative brick scraper for that foreign I think it's gonna work let's keep working on this so that it doesn't look like it's just laying there that it's wants to look like it's part of it so far not too bad all right I'll be back when it's time to sand this up well I'm actually very happy with how the coffee ground NCAA patch turned out it really looks halfway decent so I'm going to sand this inside here starting with 80 grit work my way up through 400 and I'll come back and show you the really easy finish I plan on using and I'm using it because it's easy and quick but I'm also this is one of the only pieces that I've actually made that's meant to be for food I've had done a few but not that many so we're going to use a food safe finish but it's still going to look really nice so let me get this sanded up and I'll meet you back here when it's time to put that finish on and this is a fairly good size diameter so I'm really going to do about 320 350 RPM it's all centered up it's time to put the finish on and I know I've been waiting for this so I'm using shellac based Sandy sealer I just dipped it in a little can down here well I don't know if that's showing up but it is just what I thought it's amazing oh boy wow that I I'm just not sure I'm seeing it in the camera but man oh man this is nice what a beauty you don't see that grain right now you will soon enough foreign let that dry and I'll sand it put one more coat on and then we're going to buff it out I did go over it with the action brace paste and polish but it looks so good I wanted to wait till the end to show you and that will be really soon but it just looks fantastic I'm going to go ahead and get the finish on as well on the back side and then I'll be back and I'll show you the whole thing and I think you're going to love it I sure do well it is all done as a matter of fact I finished it over a week ago today is Wednesday May 31st and I wanted to wait till today to show you this turning and then update you on my doctor's appointment which I just got back from CNE orthopedic surgeon and we'll talk about this first just look at that grain it's just amazing gotta get it kind of have to hold it and rotate it just to be able to see it there's so much going on right there it's really cool so is the underside yeah look at that so I don't know if this what is this this flame Maple fiddleback Maple I'm not sure exactly I just know it's beautiful maple it's a bar conclusion that I really didn't do much with and then I did a little work on this one just to kind of fill a little void over here and I think it looks nice like I was saying I think it might be a good little cookie tray but as soon as I mention cookies it looked like an alligator poked his head through here looking for those cookies wondering when I'm gonna put them in there yeah look at see that you're in there it's just cool it's 12 inches in diameter it's an inch tall when it sits flat and the walls are about 3 8. I use zensor seal coat which is a shellac based Sandy sealer and then I used ax abrasive paste and the Polish just to get all that it's just beautiful piece of wood so I think it's going to work out really nice for some cookies so what did Doctor have to say well we talked for a while he took a couple more X-rays and let me know what's going on and what I can do and what I can't do so it looks like I have rotor cuff tendonitis a couple little worn spots where things start grinding when you get old and some arthritis so he suggested if I want to to do physical therapy so that's what I plan on doing and all he said was you know pretty much don't do anything that hurts and try not to lift over your head and lift real heavy things but if you want to keep wood turning and it doesn't bother you then go ahead and do it we don't want to take all your fun away so that's what I plan on doing and you know it won't be all Cookie trays but I'll try to keep things a little more simple and I've got some plans on another bandsaw cutting fixture that I'll be doing oh I think that's going to be a lot of fun and I just wanted to thank everyone for your concerns on my shoulder and I do appreciate you watching my videos and I hope you enjoyed this one if you did like the video do me a favor click that like button and feel free to leave a comment both of those things will really help my channel grow I do lots of different types of turnings and you never know what might be next so be sure to subscribe if you want to see more and a special thanks to all my current subscribers you really mean a lot to me so until the next time see you later
