be part of the Mario franchise long before that in the original super mario bros mario was gonna ride Yoshi through multiple levels but they couldn't quite get the design down in Super Mario 3 the idea of Yoshi was represented through the frog suit power up when the animations weren't right what players never knew was the formation of yoshi has begun years before in a game entitled devil world the main character in the game is a small green creature who looks similar to Yoshi the character collects crosses and tried to ward off the devil's spirit wow that's pretty dark the game was only released in Japan and never ported to the United States as graphics improved this character was drawn upon again using many of the same attributes but featuring an updated sprite if Yoshi was ever included in the original Super Mario Bros this would have probably been a close representation of what it looked like but the character's name in devil world was tama gong and we think yoshi is a much better ring to it battling koopa troopa and goombahs is a little more family-friendly than demons from the devil anyway Yoshi's gender one of the great mysteries of the ocean character is determining exactly what gender the dinosaur is through the years many people have assumed Yoshi is a male but nothing is to find the character as that I mean you simply can't just lift up the dinosaur's skirt kanya the green colors are skewed more towards a male but they've also showcased Yoshi creatures and all different types of colors even throughout multiple titles and solo releases like Yoshi's cookie Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Epic Yarn the true gender has never been revealed maybe Nintendo needs to throw a gender reveal party but the fact that Yoshi can lay eggs has many believe the character is female but the debate rages on Nintendo has officially stated that Yoshi can lay eggs asexually only making things more confusing toss in Berto and the things are even more complicated gated Berto is introduced from Super Mario Bros 2 as a male character who dresses female confused yet the gender of Berto is often left ambiguous in various game releases as well and Alberto and Yoshi have a relationship together but it's undefined as to who actually plays which role in the couple but hey it's 2017 so you know multiple theories have been released but until Nintendo officially confirms it we're gonna assume that Yoshi is just himself a green dinosaur named Yoshi we here at the gamer just don't like labels anyway Yoshi feuds with Donkey Kong Yoshi may swallow enemies whole and help Mario when the going gets tough but overall Yoshi is a nice character with good morals and a friendly demeanor through the years Gio she's gotten along with the likes of Mario Luigi Princess Peach and other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom this is why it's so weird that Yoshi once had a feud with Donkey Kong himself maybe it's all about who's higher on the evolutionary ladder huh the feud between Donkey Kong and Yoshi wasn't exactly about personal feelings towards each other it was more of a battle between game developers with different styles in mind when donkey kong country was getting developed rare relied on pre-rendered graphics which gave the game a nice 3d effect Yoshi's designer Shigeru Miyamoto wasn't a fan of these graphics and went so far as to present Yoshi's Island with simplified graphics which even included crayon drawn designs and styles not only did both games feature clashing styles but both had references to the other characters Yoshi was featured and then pre-rendered graphics and Donkey Kong showcased the 2d drawing naturally the evolution of gaming continued on as both characters made amends and entered the true 3d world starting with a Nintendo 64 and continuing all the waited in the Nintendo switch can't we just be friends everybody come on a love of seafood when riding Yoshi in Super Mario World it never gets old controlling his giant tongue to snatch up enemies spit them out or even swallow them whole Yoshi stomach is seemingly able to digest anything but in the North American version of the game there are some objects you cannot eat including the flying dolphins but you won't see that on planet earth get your hands on a Japanese import of the game and it's a whole different story the Japanese culture differs substantially on sea mammal life compared to the United States this is why game designers didn't think anything when Yoshi was able to eat and swallow the flying dolphins all at once in a single level alone Yoshi can opt through and swallow over a dozen doll Bin's in a run-through it's a little different when you're dealing with real and protected animals rather than fictional characters like goombahs goombahs aren't on the endangered species list are they thanks to digital versions of super mario world with imported roms players have been able to play the japanese version of the game and see this under life with so many fictional characters it's kind of strange the developers would include dolphins in the game and as an enemy nonetheless see he has Yoshi hunts his prey the elusive dolphin which provides him sustenance enough to get through the window Yoshi's full name names have always been tricky in the Super Mario universe we all know how Princess Peach was once known as Princess Toadstool before settling on the fruitier option and said for many Yoshi's always been known as Yoshi but it's actually a mere nickname for the sake of marketing character selection screens and other overall frustrations Yoshi has used the majority of the time his actual true name is T yoshisaur munchakoopas we're not making this up that took me a couple takes to read to an official Nintendo character guide was released in the early 1990s so marketing companies could properly promote the Nintendo characters and everything they stood for it was in this little booklet where Yoshi's real name was revealed much like Yoshi eating a bunch of apples it's a mouthful but it's pretty interesting to hear the full name look at the end of it - munchakoopas is Yoshi a long-lost relative of the Koopa family what other secrets is the unassuming dinosaur actually hiding Yoshi's got some skeletons in his closet as Nintendo fans continue to dig through historical archives it'll be the final hit showcased blood splattering out of the eye before the pupil completely detaches every hit after that delivers extra squirts of blood before Kirby finally delivers his final blow it's like a Tarantino movie or something despite all the blood the original game was released with a rating of E for Everyone future releases of the game had the ratings changed and altered for example in the release of kirby's dream collection special edition Kirby's Dream Land 3 received a rating of e 10 plus meaning that it was only recommended for players over the age of 10 and due to the bloody nature imagine how graphic it would look like with an updated 3d release rated M for Mature Kirby's gun control Kirby's powers are completely unique at first he was only able to suck in objects and blast them back out but things have dramatically changed over the years Kirby has the ability to take on other characters powers and use them as his own while he's able to use swords tools and other weapons he never showcased the need for a gun if you were to watch Kirby right back at you it would be a whole different story Kirby gets a little trigger-happy the animated series starring Kirby and his pals originally aired from 2001 to 2003 it debuted in Japan but also at episodes dubbed in the United States as well when comparing the two series you would see a lot of differences especially when it comes to gun violence in original episodes guns are often used by Kirby in one episode Kirby plays a police officer where he blasts off multiple rounds of a machine gun even for a cartoon the show was incredibly violent so it's no wonder why it was heavily edited for the United States oh so completely relevant now though right along with the gun use another episode showcases king to day day wielding a chainsaw and using it as a weapon we've got another Leatherface on our hands that's great as if the violence wasn't enough Kirby and his friends even seen casually enjoying cocktails together and underage drinking okay nothing like a little guns and booze in a Saturday morning cartoon hey mom Kirby hates link Kirby seems to get along with a lot of his extended Nintendo universe friends but this wasn't always the case long before Kirby participated in Super Smash Bros battles he was waging war against one of Nintendo's most beloved heroes linked in 1993 the gameboy gained the legend of zelda links awakening was released in the adventure title link battles as usual foes and makes his way through typical dungeons but a big surprise comes in one of the castles as link makes his way through one of the corridors he comes across a familiar looking face oh it's Kirby himself don't get too close though because this version of Kirby isn't friendly he will use his powers to swallow ling colon and spit him back out with damage applied luckily Kirby can't be fought off and killed with a few swings of the sword fans in the united states were upset by the evil version of Kirby and actually referred to him as anti Kirby even though his character named in the original Japanese release refers to him as just Kirby oddly the Kirby character only appears once in the game and there's really no explanation for him being there other than a doormat link and cause a little extra trouble on its journey his appearance is even more evident in the Game Boy Color version of the game the secret stage may be the focus was placed too much on franchises like Zelda and Mario but Kirby developers got away with a lot when sneaking in adult content to their games shocking one of their more risque releases was Kirby's Dreamland - for the Game Boy in 1995 in level 5 five players can access a secret door that leads to a drop-down bonus level as you drop through the level you'll notice a number of platform blocks scattered across the sky at first the blocks seem random but if you follow the level closely you will notice a pattern it starts off innocently enough with a smiley face until you discover the elements directly below it are formed into the shape of a woman's chest oh my it gets even more revealing from there as the rest of the female anatomy is shown avert your eyes kids it's nothing too gratuitous but pretty revealing for our 10 year old selves discovering the level while playing on our game voice and then maybe discovering ourselves while it may be hard to find a cartridge of the game now a full version of Kirby's Dreamland 2 was released for the Nintendo 3ds console with a quick download you can travel the world five and discover the secret stage for yourself you might even feel like a kid again and reveal Kirby's secrets to all your friends Meta Knight in the iron mask one of Kirby's greatest foes through the years have been the Meta Knight the masked fighter loves some good swordplay but he also has some mystery to him it's rare to see the Meta Knight without his mask on but when it is removed we can see he's basically a clone of Kirby himself while Kirby is pink in color Meta Knight is appeared with both black and blue skin color with more modern versions of Meta Knight appearing in blue skin although we've got glimpses of Meta Knight there is still a lot of mystery behind the character he obviously goes through a lot of struggles and even though he is Kirby's enemy he has helped him on numerous occasions he loves to test Kirby through battles sword fights and numerous challenges this begs the question about meta Knights origins he looks like Kirby he's assisted him on multiple occasions and still feels the need to hide his identity is he related to Kirby somehow what was his childhood like isabetta knight an evil clone struggling with his identity or maybe evil Kirby from the darkest timeline the mystery grows year after year's Nintendo continues to remain quiet meta Knights most recent appearance in the Kirby franchise is in the Kirby battle royale in the fighting game Meta Knight can be unlocked but all of his deep dark secrets remain buried for now an angry kirby how angry can a little pink blob get just as the North American marketing team for Nintendo in Japan Kirby appears on his game cover releases and advertisements as a happy character floating around and ready for his next adventure in North America things are a little more serious on multiple game covers Kirby's happy faces Rin replaced for a more aggressive one he looks angry changes his body bows and even holds extra weapons in some of the covers you won't like Kirby when he's angry some of the prime examples of the difference in moods can be seen on the GameCubes release of Kirby's air ride and the we release of Kirby's Return to Dreamland the North American release of Kirby's Epic Yarn was one of the rare titles to feature a happy kirby in North America another crazy example of the angry Kirby syndrome came with an advertising campaign for Super Nintendo in a brandade Kirby appears in a fake mug shot illustration to help promote both Kirby's Avalanche and Kirby's Dream course not only does he have an angry look on his face but he has stubble on his pink face though five o'clock shadow the ad is paired with the quote he used to be such a good boy the old jail theme attempted to give Kirby a harder look so gamers would think the game just caters to young children it was weird a competitive advantage Super Smash Bros was one of the most inventive ideas Nintendo could create mixing different series like Mario starfox Pokemon and Kirby created a great world addictive gameplay and awesome multiplayer options when first glancing at some of the massive rosters in the Super Smash Bros series you may think that characters like Link Mario or Sheamus are the most powerful once the tears are broken down this isn't the case at all in multiple versions of Super Smash Bros you can find Kirby and other Kirby characters near the top of the performance test meta Knights role in Super Smash Bros Brawl puts him in his own tier because he's so powerful and strong in the game Meta Knight is so strong in the game he's actually banned for many tournaments because of his unfair advantage Kirby is nearly just as high causing lots of damage to his opponents and enemies and matches his only drawback is that he's a light character who he's easily send flying across the map think it's a random drawing some lucky powers it was actually all done on purpose the creator of the Kirby games Masahiro Sakurai is also the developer of Super Smash Bros and his love for the Kirby characters has clearly been transferred into Super Smash Bros in reality there are a lot of other characters with more strength and power than Meta Knight but he still built as an unstoppable monster for Super Smash Bros Brawl it's it's just totally unfair really Kirby the detective other countries do a lot of strange things with Nintendo characters while video game content typically remains the same from country to country it varies a lot differently when characters are used in print for the German Edition for the Nintendo fan club Kirby was introduced as a tough detective in a comic series wait what with no explanation Kirby started taking on a ton of different cases each one with a noir theme and some very dark subplots while doing work in his office it wasn't uncommon to see Kirby pull out a cigarette and have a puff or two but the illustrators know how much blowing power Kirby would lose due to extended smoking plus it would stunt his growth looking closely at comic panels you can spot even more questionable items there's a whole ashtray full of cigarette butts making Kirby look like a chain smoker next to that is a shot glass with a bottle of hard liquor it could be whiskey or something else but it's definitely not kool-aid another surprising part of the comic is the introduction of SUSE Kirby's female companion who's never been seen in the games Susie looks similar to Kirby with one defining difference being the bow attached to her head that's really all you need to make somebody a female in Nintendo the full detective case was released in 1996 as a whole comic book in an issue of the german club nintendo magazine the magazine was never released in other countries but copies were obtained scanned and shared online thanks Internet Kirby defeats Mario when it comes to Nintendo and awards Mario typically takes the prize he's won many awards throughout the years from all types of publications they are usually well deserved due to Mario's impact on the gaming industry and the variety of games the former plumber has appeared in while it may seem like a lot of characters such as Luigi donkey Khan and Kirby are always living in Mario's shadow this wasn't the case in 1993 but his statistics have been pretty clear since the beginning the pink creature only stands around 8 inches tall while the short character design works for all of Kirby's solo games it's a little bit different when it comes to other titles for example in Super Smash Bros how can the 8 inch tall Kirby stand toe-to-toe with other characters like Pikachu the answer seems pretty simple Kirby has taken some type of growth hormone unless he's stealing mushrooms from Mario Kirby is involved in some type of underground steroid ring no wonder his rankings are so high in the games and dino has never really provided an explanation for his size difference other than relying on players to suspend their disbelief it is a video game after all this would make a little sense if Donkey Kong and Bowser didn't appear as big as they do in the games something's up with Kirby because if he did appear true to his size he would get crushed like a bug from the competition if he were to appear Mario and eyeball that rolled through a haunted house level the intense music that accompanied the rolling I only made things worse Mario Party 8 had the disturbing I brawl minigame that sent players into the deep woods to do battle with a collection of floating eyes the ominous eyes lacked the same whimsical factor and fun that other minigames in the series featured when a player lost in the level they would be surrounded by a collection of miniature eyeballs that would circle and haunt characters rumors have persisted for years that the single eye symbolism featured in Nintendo games is directly associated with the Illuminati another example comes from the Nintendo 64 controller the middle grip and analog stick is said to be designed off the Illuminati eyeball placed inside of a triangle either way those games could give you nightmares pales in comparison to the horror stories of the Mario Party palm blisters if you ask me though the all-seeing zot to the massive world of Pokemon is Pokemon trainers have used saw - to give messages in the past or to see grim views of the future he uses his psychic abilities to do battle with other Pokemon but when he's not battling his visions caused a lot of disturbances this includes all of the terrible tragedies in the world and even your own death I've known that Pokemon was dark even way back when I got pokemon blue for the first time but it just never ceases to amaze me well good luck playing with him kiddos [Music] Donkey Kong was beat up Donkey Kong may be a lovable hero with his own franchise now but it didn't start out that way the barrel tossing villain of the original Donkey Kong was not just an angry ape he was an abused one according to the game's official manual Donkey Kong was Mario's mistreated pet the mistreatment obviously went too far in Donkey Kong sought revenge getting sick of the abuse Donkey Kong escaped the clutches of Mario kidnapped a woman and tried to explain his injustice to the world unfortunately his communication skills were a little subpar and Kong ended up just throwing a bunch of barrels instead oddly enough anyone that played the original Donkey Kong was in control of the animal abuser himself Mario it's surprising that the game wasn't criticized by PETA back in the day apparently the two of made amends as Donkey Kong is now what have Nintendo's biggest heroes he's teamed up with his former owner on numerous occasions and the two can often be found racing against each other in the Mario Kart series Mario has seemed to turn a corner from his animal abuse days but it may be a good idea to send Yoshi a small warning about his owners shocking past although maybe Yoshi already knows what with all the midair ditching Mario cheated on Princess Peach there's no greater videogame love story than the long journey between Princess Peach and Super Mario they have had countless adventures where Mario rescued peach and the loving couple sailed off into the sunlight with nothing but their love for each other kill bad Mario tainted the whole thing by cheating on peach with Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land Mario diverts his attention from Princess Peach to help the kidnapped Princess Daisy it's all good to save any princess you can but Mario's motives were clearly a little shady after Mario saves the kingdom and rescues Princess Daisy the two fly off together in a private rocket ship I know what you're thinking they're going to meet up with peach and tell their harrowing tale nope as they fly together Mario clearly joins the mile-high club with Daisy as a heart appears it may have been one of the biggest twists in Mario history not only did he cheat on peach but Daisy main love interest of Mario's brother Luigi the whole affair has an episode of Maury written all over it maybe Bowser was the better option all along drowsy the Dream Eater Pokemon may spend a lot of time inside their pokeballs but they need to get loose to eat every now and then while many Pokemon enjoyed meats vegetables and other normal foods drowsy takes a page from Freddy Kreuger drowsy is known as a hypnosis Pokemon using psychic abilities to put his opponents to sleep drowsy must eat dreams to survive but oddly he can only eat the dreams of children the way he does it is just pure frightening a sleeping child will feel an itch on their nose as the nose acts as a portal to their dreams who comes up with this stuff drowsy remembers every single dream he eats making him even creepier for the massive invasion as if eating dreams wasn't scary enough drowsy is incredibly scary to look at he looks like a mutated tapir complete with three cloth toad things in each hand drowsy has been featured in multiple Pokemon games along with movies and animated specials when there aren't enough dreams drowsy suffers through terrible nightmares maybe you should save drowsy for gain time gaming only or maybe just don't use the creep at all Mario kills mushroom people in Mario's never-ending quest to save Princess Peach he's also rescuing captured citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom it's too bad that the heroic plumber doesn't realize how many mushroom people he's killing in the process in the original Super Mario Bros the manual states that the evil Koopa used black magic to turn the mushroom people into special stones and bricks yes those are the same stones and bricks that Mario's been smashing for over 30 years not only does this include bricks that Mario smashes just for the heck of it but it also includes the question mark bricks that Mario hits for gold coins and power-ups essentially Mario's getting paid to kill off as many mushrooms as possible it's like a mass killing when he gets his plumbers hands on a block that has multiple coins in it the poor deaths of the mushroom people only got worse in later versions of the games Mario gained the ability to freeze with and torpedo through bricks as he made his way through levels yay Cubans skull origins Cuba may be considered one of the cutest Pokemon for his small size and the way he wears his skull on his head fur armor the creepy part the skull a Cuban wears is actually his own mother's Cuba lives on fighting the good fight for his mother that obviously had some sort of grim death the skull not only honors his mother but acts as a great piece of armour when the Pokemon is battling it adds a lot of strength and defense when going up against other monsters unless they're water types as if that isn't creepy enough when cubone isn't battling he's constantly crying howling at the moon and mourning the mysterious death of his mom his mother's death has never been explained but it's clear that cubone either witnessed it or was traumatized in some way in some sick twist cuban could have been the one who actually slayed his own mother in another twist cubone carries around a sharp bone that he uses as a weapon hopefully the bone weapon isn't her femur Mario karts giant rock many levels in the Mario Kart series feature gorgeous scenery including the often used peach Beach the peach beach level is a great scenic ride that features ocean waters idealistic views and a place that many people would like to vacation at the sand based course is available to race on in both Mario Kart Double Dash on the Nintendo GameCube and Mario Kart Wii each track is exactly the same with updated graphics featured in the Wii version the next time you take a ride through peach Beach take a closer look at some of the rock formations one area in the level features a very large phallic-shaped rock not only is the inappropriate rock shape clearly visible but players must drive under the center of it to get through the course two large stones sit at the back of the rock and dip into the ocean waters a large cylinder shape extends from the two rocks into a curve the app alright I think you get it that's a penis dot jpg the view is very hard to miss and it's any wonder how gaming developers missed this formation in both versions of the game link and Peter Pan one of the most iconic heroes in the world of Nintendo is link it's too bad that all of Link's inspiration actually came from Peter Pan the similarities are eerie there's the green outfits pointed ears and the seemingly inability to ever age when link was first created for the NES his design was limited to the basic graphics on the console as the character became popular illustrated versions were clearly a ripoff of Peter Pan not only are both of their looks the same but each hero has a weapon of choice the sword sure links sword may be longer and more powerful but no one is really comparing the two the zelda franchise also decided to introduce the character of Navi a fairy that was clearly based off of Tinker Bell Navi sticks by Link's side helps them in tough situations and uses a little magic to get through their adventures together oh and don't forget about Peter Pan's shadow and Dark Link next thing you know link will do battle with a gear ahim that is a hook for a hand waluigi is like the black sheep of the Super Mario franchise he seemingly came out of anyone that has played Super Princess Peach it's obvious that she's tapped into some crazy emotions that have led to obtaining multiple types of powers the game takes place on vibe island allowing her to vibe into these powers but there has to be some way she can use them off the island and help escape the wrath of Bowser these powers include joy where she can fly through the air create weather effects and use powerful punches the power of gloom allows her to spread powerful tears throughout worlds allowing bad items to get destroyed and good items like plants to grow up through the air peaches best bet against Bowser would be her rage power the massive amount of anger inside of her can transform into a giant flame and that would easily destroy Bowser in a fight hopefully peach gets another chance to showcase her powers and actions in a future game Bowser saves peach Bowser's usually the enemy against Mario and Peach but there have been times where he puts his evil nature aside and truly decides to help the one that he loves throughout all the Mario games there are two instances where this has been made clear the first came in Paper Mario the thousand-year door originally released in 2004 for the Gamecube the game introduces the ex knots and the evil characters plan on sacrificing peach and killing her off feeling jealous and offended Bowser sets off to rescue peach himself as he feels like he's the only one who's allowed to take her it was a heroic move that was eventually foiled once he crossed paths with Mario another example of Bowser helping the princess comes in Super Mario maker Bowser is a playable character for multiple levels and players have the option of using him to do the 100 Mario challenge in this challenge players have to defeat a set amount of levels with just 100 lives every character that reaches the princess by the end of the we'll receive a special message when Bowser arrives to save the day she states oh my Bowser did you not the Mushroom Kingdom mario has to defeat a villain who is not Bowser and save a princess who is not Beach so while it's technically different it's essentially the same as every other Mario game to might not like all the games which is completely understandable but for the most part Mario is a beloved of video game icon the same can be said for the rest of the characters Donkey Kong hell everyone is still raving to this day about Donkey Kong Country calling it rare wares best game franchise peach is one of the first video game princesses and is beloved by fans cosplayers and artists journalists covering the game even thought Daisy was a different localization of peach for Western audiences however love for Daisy would soon turn around when she made a more prominent character in some of the Mario spin-off games articles started coming out praising Daisy she was put on lists of characters who need their own games and similar topics Destructoid even put out an article titled why Daisy is better than peach now that is some shade movie star so how many of you have seen the Super Mario Bros movie none of you yeah thought so don't feel bad this film has gone down in infamy as one of the worst video game movies in history the film was released in 1993 and was Nintendo's last attempt at making a film until the recent rumor of a new super mario bros movie being in the works let's hope this movie will be better considering it's made by illumination studios we're not holding our breath nevertheless the 1993 film took a lot of liberties with the source material too many to name in one entry but the film decided to make Daisy the main damsel this time around instead of peach keep in mind this doesn't make the movie any better but perhaps this was a way to market Super Mario Land with Daisy sera Solon being featured just four years before and with her appearance in other games Daisy was new and fresh on people's minds Princess Daisy was played by Samantha Mathis who would go on later to appear in Law & Order SVU and lost among other shows well if there's one thing this film can do it surprised us aside from writing in Daisy the talent they managed to drag into this is an accomplishment all on its own here's hoping Nintendo can learn from their mistakes and make a better movie this time around and those were ten weird things you never knew about desi you fact that he's the polar opposite of our plumber hero Mario doesn't help matters he's a character that doesn't get a lot of love and rightfully so join us as we take a look at ten weird facts you probably never knew about Wario Wario is not Mario's evil twin it's pretty easy to see why people get the history of Wario mixed up it's also easy to see how people may actually think that Wario and Mario are siblings unless you're really into the backstories of the characters of Nintendo although Wario is the fatter and more self-absorbed version of Mario they are not in fact twins or brothers at all Wario was introduced to the world of Nintendo in 1992 and he was originally designed as an arch rival to Mario because let's face it fans could only do so much with Mario and Bowser so there needed to be a new villain as it was revealed Wario was Mario's greatest rival in their childhood through the super mario con manga and other various comics the rivalry became a major theme and it was also mentioned in the instruction booklet of Super Mario Land 2 6 golden coins the Nintendo Power magazines occasionally stated mario and wario were cousins but there's been no confirmation and it could also been a mixup in translation it wouldn't be the first time this happened it all stems from his journey of Mario's popularity at a young age and his competitive nature makes him one of the greatest nemesis to Mario Wario inspiration came in 1985 seven years before he was designed we're sure there wasn't just one place which created the inspiration for the masterpiece known as Wario but what we do know is one strong possibility is from a character named spike in a 1985 game called wrecking crew he doesn't bear too much of a resemblance to spike but there's a strong chance their personalities are almost equal Foreman spike appeared in the bonus stages where he has to compete against Mario to collect coins and after the first bonus round spike will begin to appear in some of the phases from the game wrecking crew his weapon of choice was a golden hammer Mario runs to the foreground while spike runs around in the background and instead of entering doors he smashed them open and tries to knock down Mario Mario was able to also knock spike to the ground but spike could only be permanently defeated in the game if he was trapped by Mario the instruction manual had no photo of Foreman spike but from the video game you could get an idea of his appearance and it wasn't quite what Wario would become seven years later but we can't see the vague resemblance with the beard crooked teeth and yellow clothing he wears Wario loves peach this one is probably not too weird but really when you stop to take a moment to think about it it is Wario has been in love with peach for quite some time but maybe not as much as he loves collecting gold coins and winning the first time were introduced to the idea Wario is a type of feeling other than loathing is in Mario versus Wario at the birthday bash Wario receives an invitation to Princess toadstools birthday and he's determined to get peach the perfect gift he rushes off to buy her Samus doll because Samus is perfect for any true feminine hero but unfortunately when Wario rides back at the store he discovers someone with a big black moustache already purchased in Wario believes the description fits Mario so when he leaves he grabs a creepy jack-in-the-box to take to the party he unsuccessfully attempts to switch is creepy gift with Mario's a few times and eventually does so when peach opens up his gift she discovers sinister jack-in-the-box and throws it away in horror this completely crushes for Wario until he discovers Mario also got her a creepy jack-in-the-box and it was actually Luigi who got her the samus doll oh sweet sweet Luigi Wario was introduced first in a video game not a comic is some believe as we're well aware by now Wario didn't actually get his first appearance in a videogame until 1992 we still think that's pretty shocking actually it feels like he's just been a part of Mario for the entirety he appeared in Super Mario Land 2 6 golden coins great game but here's a common misconception some still believe it was his comic book intro which gave him his fame when in fact it was the opposite this comic followed up the widely popular 12 part Super Mario adventure comics and the comic book arc was created to give him a past because it was so vague in the video game volume 44 of Nintendo Power Mario vs. Wario included his troubled past with Mario although it all basically turned out to be a miscommunication the comic showcasing Wario's past became popular another one was released featuring the character called Wario versus Mario the birthday bash we're so happy to see Wario so well liked by his fans he became a staple of the series and it was definitely nice to see him get a well deserved backstory even if we are secretly rooting for him as closeted Wario fans Wario's backstory took almost a decade to flesh out it's kind of weird to think about all the history between Mario and Wario and where it begins is even stranger Wario is a playable character in Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land which was released in 1994 and then in 1998 Wario Land 2 was released there was a span of four years between these two games we aren't going to count the attempt at a game in 1996 called Virtual Boy Wario Land because it was a flog although it was released a year prior to Wario Land 2 in 1995 there weren't enough differences in the 1995 game to really make it stand on its own two feet the final game of the Wario Land series was shake it in 2008 which meant altogether there were eight games with Wario and in every piece of these games we were given just a small glimpse into Wario's life but it took quite a long time to get there if you ask us we're looking at a span of 16 years just to get into the Enigma of Wario but we feel like it was well worth the wait now we're just crossing our fingers some amazing development company will start working hard on either a shake it remaster or a Wario maker game to make our dreams come true Wario's secret battle with alcoholism this one doesn't come too much of a surprise if there's one character we would peg as an alcoholic it has to be Wario call us judgmental but he just fits the role perfectly and it's obvious the designers felt the same way as we did in Wario Land 2 you might vaguely remember Wario's transformation to crazy Wario Wario even warns us that if he gets hit by a ball in the game he will start acting strange but here's where the weird stuff really happens if you were playing this exact same game in Japan Wario would be getting doused with alcohol by those evil penguins apparently using beer for the Western title was too much for children but throwing what appears to be explosive bombs is okay we'll ignore this and continue with Wario's alcoholism problem Wario turns into a weird shade of purple and then becomes impossible to control when he gets hit with either the ball or the beer he stumbles around on screen clearly being drunk and probably not acting as the best childhood role model but who knows maybe Wario has changed his ways after all it only takes one beer to get this 300 eight pound guy drunk so maybe these AAA meetings have been working after all the name came first you know the old saying what came first the chicken or the egg well we were wondering what came first with Wario the design or the name Hiro Zeki Otaki the game director for wario land said in all honesty it was the name that came first and the design followed shortly after the Japanese word for bad is Hwa Ruby so they combined it with Mario to come up with Wario if you flip the M upside down you could also get the W and so it would work in countries which didn't have the same wordplay kyo da he also said they wanted to make the game even weirder but eventually decided to pull back from the idea we still can't get over the time they decided to add weird mario sound effects and an alien as the main antagonist we're pretty sure this was weird enough the first draft of Wario wasn't well-received because it wasn't mario world enough so the designers went back to the drawing board and came up with the design we are now so familiar with although Wario has gotten a modern makeover he stayed pretty true to his original roots Wario was planned as a playable character for super smash bros melee do you know how awesome it would have been to have Wario as a playable character in super smash bros melee instead we had to sadly wait another six years for the release of Super Smash Bros Brawl to get Wario as a choice there was a poll for who would make the best newcomer in the second smash game and Wario has voted the third most wanted character overall with 66 votes unfortunately both Peach and Bowser beat him out somehow peach would go on to die Wario with 66 votes and Bowser ended up with a hundred and 69 votes - a beer in super smash bros melee the choice was to leave him out because it would have been too many Nintendo newcomers in one title however Wario was referenced in the game since his colors can be seen on Mario the only changes are his M is blue and the rivets and buttons were white he was also his own trophy in the game which could be unlocked by beating all-star mode on a difficulty level without continuing so even though fans felt a bit disappointed including him in the next brawl game definitely made up for it seriously who didn't fall in love with his fatal smash form as Wario man all he had to do was consumed garlic to turn into an insane unstoppable antihero while Luigi is in Wario's brother this one came out as a shock when we first learned of its truth but apparently while Luigi and Wario aren't brothers si remember when we talked about how Wario got his name from the Japanese word waru meaning bad well the same can be said about while Luigi they took Luigi's name and added an W to it to match Wario's but not because they're related did we already say that sorry we just can't get over the shock wall Luigi first appeared in 2000 in Mario Tennis and didn't have a developed backstory there does seem to be quite a rivalry between Luigi and waluigi though while Luigi is considered to be Wario's partner in crime or perhaps even a sidekick a cult following is certainly followed while Luigi but as for now there's no definitive thing which says while Luigi and Wario are brothers one interesting thing about the development of waluigi for mario tennis was that it sparked some other propositions like war opechee which translates the peach and even possibly owaru ii which would have been the evil counter to princess daisy both of these ideas were unfortunately dismissed by Shigeru Miyamoto the craziest thing is that while Luigi was created to be Wario's partner but hasn't been featured in a single Wario game since he was created hopefully this will change soon Wario may have been the inspiration for super mario odyssey if you're playing super mario odyssey and it feels familiar there might be a reason for that is it a bit like playing a game from the Wario Land series the new game feels like a classic Gameboy era game with quite a few modern updates and we couldn't be more ecstatic about it the transformations and even the new character designs feel as if they could easily been pulled from wario land 3 and added to the game you might remember the character named dunk from Wario Land 2 he was a rabbit who played basketball and was one of the bosses who would throw basketballs at Wario there was also the other bunny boss named chute who appeared in wario land 3 this rabbit however enjoys playing a game of soccer with a koopa troopa like tortoise as his goalkeeper Wario has to jump on shoot and turn him into a ball and kick him into the goal the brew dolls could have easily been pulled from the bunny bosses idea of Wario Land 2 & 3 and stuck into a pirate ship which was a major part of the Wario Land Series games if you were feeling moments of wario land nostalgia when playing super mario odyssey now this is why hmm glad to have your attention toad has been around since the beginning of the Mario franchise and is a staple of the Mushroom Kingdom sometimes toad is a single character and other times there are plenty of them from toad to toadsworth and toadette Pete sure has her hands full today we'll take a closer look at these odd creatures and learn some you and interesting facts without further ado here are five weird facts you never knew about toad presto change-o Bowser's scheme is pretty standard at this point get the princess get doesn't undo the curse on the poor toads within the game but let's think about this for just a moment sure it's a video game and nothing really matters but within the context of the game you have innocent minions being turned into inanimate objects most of which mario has to destroy in order to get to the princess this game was marketed to kids mind you really if you think about it this was one of the games with an early form of perma death might have to think a little hard about it though the toad suit mario has a lot of different forms with the release of Mario Odyssey Mario has been everything from a t-rex to a tree in mario 64 we saw a new slew of upgrades with a flying cap and metal cap in the earlier titles Mario was a bit more limited to mushrooms fire flowers in the occasional star this all changed in Super Mario 3 when we were given new suits like the Frog suit and the hammer brothers suit apparently in the game's code there was going to be a toad suit there's no description for it but it was revealed to just be an error and a mismatched hammer suit that you would find in world 7:8 even if it's not an official suit you have to admit it would be interesting to see what the toad suit could have done if you remember in Super Mario 2 when you can select toad he was the strongest character in the game for some reason perhaps the toad suit allowed for Mario to lift blocks and throw them like he did in the previous game maybe he got to run around crying out his own name in that horrible toad voice in any case it's fun to imagine what could have been in this already amazing game what's under the cap has been a strange debate regarding characters with famous headgear we've rarely seen link without his hat until breadth of the wild came along and we've never seen a toad without its cap well of course one theory is that the red and white spotted caps are just their heads and they're born as mushroom headed freaks it would make sense considering they get their name from the mushroom toadstool which is an actual type of mushroom however there is one instance of a Toby without his cap and it came in the short-lived Super Mario Brothers Super Show cartoon and also in the adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3 there's a brief scene in one episode where toad is seen without his cap on in the scene toad is being carried away by a giant bird he's dropped and the only way to get down is to use his giant mushroom cap as a parachute to everyone's shock he's bald sorry guys toads do not have long flowing Mane's under their caps at least not this one coincidentally total is voiced by Jonathan stocker in both shows who also voiced link boy the range on that man is impeccable of course he did not provide the voice for the games which leads us into our next topic hello similar to link from The Legend of Zelda toad has a very unique voice despite the fact that he says very little the difference being that toad actually says a few words most of which are hello and hey and other one sentence expletives hey at least it's better than just shouting yeah and other random grunts right although I would take that any day over excuse me princess well someone obviously voices them but who for the most part the job was Jen Taylors for the early games she voiced toad for all the major games from Mario Golf Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games from there onwards toad has been voiced by Samantha Kelly which includes Mario and rabbits and Mario Odyssey now if those names sound familiar than you annoying fish from the Super Mario franchise but there's a lot more to that simple fish than we may realize learn the deep history of the character some surprising facts and things which will never Zuma when no one else was around the boredom project for shaggy Romy Amato not a single person knew what the story contained except me Amato who the story was presented to before it was added to the game the storybook became a fun addition to Super Mario Galaxy and it was even brought back in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where a similar book appears in the secret ending of the game the difference is this powers like surrounding the comet observatory with a horse field to make it basically a starship for transportation you just can't touch her which is also proved when a player attempts to jump on her and the bubble appears there was a bit of speculation Rosalina would be paired with Mario or even while Luigi but it's all just talking she's much better as a standalone character a strong independent woman she just doesn't have time for a guy with all the planetary duties and awesome advice to deliver to the Mario series gang Selena is wise legend has it Rosalina is a parallel version of peach itself in quite the same way so you'll see if this is the case it means both the characters and the stars can be reborn showing us that Rosalina was peaches daughter in one of the previous cycles of the universe who knew a Mario game could be so deep in complex Rosalina was in the Marvelous Misadventures of flapjack well sort of the last place I thought I'd ever see Rosalina was in cartoon network's popular animated series the Marvelous Misadventures of flapjack the show created by throb van orman back in 2008 and start flapjack the young boy raised by a whale named bubby and mentored first appearance in Super Mario Bros in 1985 he has had a successful 30-plus year run which is quite impressive in the video game world the original creator of Bowser was Shigeru Miyamoto although it was an accident that he even designed the cover art which has now been changed to reflect the Bowser we have all come to love or hate me Amato strongly considered asking a professional manga artist or illustrator to do the art for the game but since time was running out he ended up drawing the original box art himself he used inspiration from an anime film called Journey to the West and found the Ox demon King to be the perfect reflection of what he felt Bowser should be the original design included gray blue skin and a lack of horns but the design would be revamped one coj kitab a a hired magazine solely for entertainment and was cited as Bowser's wife there isn't much background information on her or whether the two were still married or separated but they certainly have their issues there have been theories saying she may be mother of both Bowser Jr's and the Koopalings the Koopalings aren't exactly Bowser's children which means Claudia either had a husband before their marriage or was seeing someone on the side man this is steamy either way we know Claudia isn't around anymore she's hidden herself far away from the Mario Bowser and peach drama and we can't blame her getaway girl you just keep running maybe she left because Bowser was always busy trying to kidnap another woman of a different species which we can definitely see as problematic for any relationship you don't need therapy to see that one artists and fans love to make up theories about what claudia is doing now one of our favorite versions of Claudia is the made-up one by FK central she's a typical mother who cooks cleans and makes sure her children are raised properly the conflict between her husband and Mario is ridiculous and she wants no part so she moved out of the castle to avoid the drama she knows her children also want to fight Mario but she hopes they won't go down the same path as Bowser Anna sounds like an HBO special sight Mia Bowser really loves peach since the beginning we've known Bowser kidnaps peach it's just part of their story and a lot of fans argue he only does it because he wants to rule the Mushroom Kingdom that does make sense but why would he continue to try to kidnap Princess Peach over and over again failing each time if he had no romantic feelings towards her unless his character is going through some weird technical glitches it just wouldn't make sense for him to do this to gain control over a bunch of toads and turtles there are two instances where Bowser makes peach more and a property than an object of romance in Paper Mario the thousand-year door he says under no circumstances is anyone allowed that peach without my say-so and then again in Super Paper Mario he says will I marry peach are you kidding me the answer is yes the Paper Mario series shows us how strongly attracted to peach he actually is it's a little bit creepy it doesn't in an immediate way of course as we get to see Bowser's diary full of peach related material super creepy he also kisses a poster of the princess and confesses his undying love to the poster okay super extra creepy it's all humorous but also really sad to watch he's pretty confident he's gonna be with peach but it's his selfish behavior that makes her despise him in the end we just don't think a fire-breathing dragon turtle and a human girl would be able to make it work but hey love knows no bounds three korean dishes were inspiration for Bowser's name if there's one we know it's that Bowser loves food almost as much as he loves coming up with master plans to beat Mario and rule the Mushroom Kingdom pretty tough competition if you ask us we're happy to see Bowser score the top spot because after all he's a part of the best-selling video game franchise of all time after all the time it has taken Bowser to plan his elaborate kidnappings we definitely feel he deserved the rightful seat on the video game villain throne he's one of the most persistent villains and it's no wonder you should be crowned king of the video game villains after over 30 years of conspiring against Mario I bet you that's older than most of you watching the runner-up GLaDOS was barely beat out for the spot and only a small share of the votes kept the AI computer system from snagging the top spot sadly Wario didn't even crack the top 50 list no love for Wario huh Mario is the family-friendly face of Nintendo but even a company like Nintendo has some skeletons in their closet what happens when the gaming company for people of all ages doesn't always appeal to all ages whether they're shady with their games or their business practices Nintendo has not always been rated E for Everyone today we'll be looking at the things to Nintendo may not be so proud of streaming streaming has changed the video game industry back in the day you had to read a slew of reviews from a variety of game publications that were either biased as all heck or just plain wrong today's video game journalism is no different but what has changed is how the gamer can be both informed and entertained all with a face attached to the content streaming platforms like twitch and now YouTube hosts a variety of personalities who showcase games for millions of fans there is a little-known gray area with streaming and video games on paper video game companies and devs can take down a streamer stream for potential copyright infringement since they are streaming a game largely for free to a wide audience thus devaluing the product like we said on paper devs and companies can do this but in practice they let it happen because the marketing streamers provide is just too valuable can you think of all the games that have become Smash Hits because of streams pub G would like a word on this subject however one company just doesn't get the memo and it's Nintendo streamers and let's player is big and small have called out Nintendo in the past for de modernizing their stream Santa floats prominent youtubers like its run it's shocking so the same system that brought us Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy also brought us carnival games for Wii this all seems very strange because way back in the nineteen when the NES was dominating the market Nintendo had a very tight grip on quality control for their games sure there may have been some bombs that slipped through the cracks but all in all Nintendo had their eye on quality and as a result the NES remains one of the most memorable consoles in the history of gaming it really gives you some contacts at how drastically things have changed Nintendo a standalone Titan on the gaming world now has its spot for the top contested with every generation of consoles the we may have brought some new ideas to the table but if the table is filled with copies of story our fairy tales I think the progress is just lost in the sea of mediocrity she won that one in Tendo scarcity anyone who's even looked at an economic book knows supply and demand when supplies our low demand is high so on and so forth but we're talking about video games not stocks and bonds right yeah we're we're a video game channel yeah okay the thing is Nintendo has come out with some fantastic products in the past some even give nintendo fans anxiety attacks today it all comes to a head with amiibos you remember that was right well they're still used today but we bet some of you forgot just how scarce these little fellas were on launch there was a mad dash for some of the amiibo figures and by the time the stragglers got to the mall all that remained were Luigi's Lynx and Mario's no peaches Zelda's or even Kirby's this intensified when games would come out with an exclusive amiibo which would be sold out within hours no matter what Nintendo did to resupply it was never enough it got to a point where fans accusing Nintendo of creating artificial scarcity to drive up demand while the amiibo situation eventually solved itself kind of the other products in the Nano had in store were not so lucky pining for the glory days of 16-bit graphics Nintendo released the SNES classic a smaller and sleeker model of the original console these babies sold like hotcakes actually hotter than hotcakes because like some of the exclusive amiibos retailers sold out of them in a heartbeat even pre-orders for these were out in mere hours yet when the day finally arrived Walmart had to cancel every single pre-order because of a technical glitch in their system needless to say people were pissed and got the same outrage over artificial scarcity all over again get your pitchforks and torches we're going mobbin perhaps the solution of this problem is twofold perhaps Nintendo could make enough product for an initial launch or maybe fans can better temper their expectations we should know better by now online play online gaming is a modern innovation we often take for granted while PC gamers have been enjoying online play for the better part of three decades console gaming is still a relatively new concept dating back to the early 2000s back then we had no idea what online gaming could really do aside from Kinect players across the globe back then the Internet still required a landline and would be disconnected with a phone call mom get off the phone but today we have gamers who have all of their content streamed to them over the Internet in the short time it's been around for consoles Nintendo has found a way to do it the worst the worst the first console Nintendo released with online play was technically the Gamecube but even then it worked for maybe two games and required a separate adapter you had to buy shocking meanwhile the Xbox blew everyone out of the water with Xbox Live what could have made online gaming worse for Nintendo two words for you gamers friend codes hahaha Nintendo's online system require you to enter a friend code if you want to add someone online yes we said that in the present tense because even on the switch you still need a friend code think about that for a moment to add someone online you need a 12 digit friend code a code which is easily forgettable and manually enter it in so simply making a profile and adding someone is too easy for a Nintendo so they need to make this needlessly convoluted like making friends in real life despite the horrible user interface with online play Nintendo is finally in the online gaming circuit but its competitors have a good 10 year head start in perfecting it and innovating online gaming underpowered if we were to look at Nintendo and pick out its best qualities you would pick it's amazing IPS and franchises if you look at the company's timeline you'll see flagship franchises like Mario The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon still going strong to this day some might even say that like a fine wine they're getting better with age however there is one Department Nintendo falls short in almost every time power if you were to examine the specs for the last few major Nintendo consoles and compare them to their peers Nintendo comes up short every time like every time let's first look at the Gamecube during its run it had to compete with the Xbox and ps2 the GameCube CPU was no match for the Xbox and the same goes for the audio input despite this the Gamecube was still a contender and could go toe-to-toe with the ps2 and Xbox where the divide seems to become more apparent is in the gen afterwards with the Wii the processor for the Wii was just barely better than the GameCubes and ran at 480p at best when the other consoles were already pushing HD not to mention the graphics for the week could not hold a candle to the ps3 meanwhile the original Xbox 360 was too busy red ringing to compete again which brings us to today's generation of consoles the switch Xbox one and ps4 the switch as it stands is woefully underpowered compared to the other systems as far as games go Nintendo can't be beat right now but as a console the switch can't even compare to the competition regard to power as a tablet it's actually pretty powerful but not as a console Bertos unmentionables for being a family-friendly company from a large conservative country Nintendo can be weirdly progressive with a few things though he or she might not be wildly known now Berto was a character who made her first appearance in Super Mario Bros 2 as a boss this Yoshi s creature has been described as trans or at the very least gender fluid given the fact she is actually a he but refers to himself as a she hey it's 2018 you'll fit right in Berto in any case Berto has been a minor character in the Super Mario Canon appearing in sports titles spin-offs and other games often she's paired with Yoshi because they appear to be similar species however she's been in a few Japanese exclusive Wii games one of these is the obscure and often overlooked captain rainbow in this very odd game Berto is wrongly imprisoned for using the woman's bathroom which is a play on the whole gender fluid thing to get Berto out of jail the player has to go to her house for something to prove she is a female when you go to her house you find this proof under a vibrating pillow the game never says exactly what it is but we can kind of fill in the blanks we need evidence someone who's female and the proof is right under a vibrating pillow Wow Nintendo feel like I need to clear my internet history now keep in mind in Tendo has also made a game where you can marry other people's knees on the opposite sex only so it seems to Nintendo can't make up its mind about whether or not to be fully support the LGBT characters and this left at a vague kind of the Virtual Boy this might not necessarily be a secret but it's certainly something Nintendo is trying to forget and more of a rough patch in the company's history fans and gamers love to remember hey remember that it's hard to believe virtual reality is here in the modern gaming world okay admittedly it's still a little buggy and in its infancy but it's a virtual reality we always wanted ever since the concept was first proposed way way back in the 80s you see early Nintendo was buzzed with peripherals and product marketing people often think of the super scope as an item in Super Smash Bros but it was really a gaming peripheral use for shooting games long story short it was better item into Super Smash Bros than in real life peripheral some of the more popular ones include Rob the robot the toy that came with one game and served as a player - yeah Rob is a more memorable Super Smash Bros character than a peripheral - isn't it weird how so many past Nintendo products made it into Super Smash Bros well one product eludes the shameless Super Smash Bros plugin is the Virtual Boy ahead of its time in concept not so much in execution you see while this little toy gave us the first glimpse into 3d it came with some caveats first you could only really play this for about 30 to 45 minutes before players started getting headaches and eye strain the games were displayed in this blood red and black which is not the best thing to be staring at for hours on end perhaps what is most appalling about the Virtual Boy was its library of games it barely had 10 games for its entire run and none of them were particularly noteworthy if Nintendo ever steps into VR using the Virtual Boy name and correcting everything wrong with the previous rendition would be amazing if not they could just put it on the next Super Smash Bros the Nintendo PlayStation you never thought you would see those words together or if you did you think it'd be an elderly person who doesn't know what consoles are like the ex station and the play cube but we assure you at one time the Nintendo PlayStation was a real console back when Sony was just getting into video games Nintendo and Sony came to an agreement to try to make a console together this unheard-of partnership led to the Nintendo PlayStation know that PlayStation is two separate words here it's important now this PlayStation was going to use a CD drive instead of a cartridge system Nintendo had been using up into this point but they felt it was time to make the switch however the two companies began to butt heads over who would get the rights to the games on the system Nintendo would do something so underhanded it would forever change the landscape of gaming as we know it because of this disagreement Nintendo went around to Sony's main competitor Philips to develop a super disk system so at the press conference where Sony was going to announce their partnership with Nintendo and making the PlayStation Nintendo instead announced they would be making what would become the Philips CDI yes Sony was pissed obviously beyond pissed really as a result of this backstabbing Sony naturally pulled out of the deal and went on to make the PlayStation now one word and the rest is history Luigi may look like the goofy and unassuming brother of focus on attacking Mario so much instead the events actually happened in the old PC game Mario is missing taking a break from snatching up Princess Peach Bowser decides to kidnap Mario but Luigi isn't having any of it he goes full-on liam neeson on Bowser during the closing moments of the game Luigi finally gets to confront Bowser atop his castle balcony not afraid of fire or his giant claws Luigi what was under the mask in the most random way possible while presenting a tennis trophy to shy guy in Mario power tennis shy guy approaches the stage and trips whoops this causes his mask to fall off and thanks to a frustrating angle we cannot see the revealed face only Luigi's frightened reaction to it luigi is so scared he actually falls off his feet what did he see what's under that mask whatever it was it must have been a lot worse than the shy guy ghosts from Luigi's Mansion in the game they removed their mask to reveal nothing but glowing eyes Luigi's Mansion was released before Mario power tennis so Luigi already knew what to expect there but what he saw was completely different was it a young link of you into his dark future luigi may play a part of the fool but he continues to hold these secrets away from everyone including Mario keep it tight lipped luigi a lover not a fighter it's clear from games and actions that luigi is not as aggressive as Mario if a these shows were kind of cheesy I mean it was the 80s the thought of having a Legend of Zelda reboot today would be amazing come on Netflix we're looking at you Soul Calibur Lincoln brawl with the best of them help we've seen him smack Mario into the heavens in Super Smash Bros but believe it or not link has been featured in other fighting games as part of a promotion for Soul Calibur link was featured as a bonus character for the Nintendo release and it was super awesome in the game link dishes out all his classic moves we've come to know and love he can use his bombs boomerang and bow and arrow along with the classic Master Sword in addition to his already impressive arsenal you can swap out links Master Sword for other iconic Zelda weapons like the Megaton hammer the great fairy sword and the bug catching net the story of Soul Calibur is a little vague so vague in fact that link could easily be inserted into the war if you go through the arcade mode and beat inferno as link you will be given a short cutscene where it talks about how link came to the world of Soul Calibur in order to defeat the great evil that was the sole edge in order to protect his own world okay that's a it's a little convoluted this is all well and good but in reality fans were just as excited to play as link in a 1vs1 fighting game no story required Peter Pan when you look at Link's attire you have to wonder why Nintendo decided to go with all the green getup well shaggy Romeo mato had made it no secret that he's a big fan of Disney films and who could blame him Mufasa is death still brings a tear to my eye but more importantly he was inspired by Peter Pan to make what would eventually become our favorite Hylian warrior I mean put the two side-by-side and the similarities become blatantly obvious an eternally young boy aided by a magical fairy and a sword great he can't fly unless he has certain items but it can't be a perfect one-to-one comparison way back in the eighties the NES his graphics were not so crystal clear so as a result the sprites had to pop up and stand out Miyamoto drew inspiration from Peter Pan's pointed hat to help link stand out more as an icon and the design is stuck ever since if you would like to infer more references people have linked Navi the fairy from ocarina of time to Tinker Bell but that seems a bit farther from the original game where all these decisions were made of course Navi is 100 times more annoying than Tinker Bell a Link to the Past so as anyone ever wondered why link is called Link well the game a Link to the Past will shed some light on this the aptly named game was supposed to take place in a far more distant future and Link was supposed to be the link between the past and the future if you do some digging on Google you'll find some scrapped concept art of Zelda looking a bit more sci-fi than fantasy in fact in the far-off sci-fi version of Hyrule the Triforce was supposed to be the three computer chips and link was to bring them together or link them hence his name it's clever it's a play on words link instead Miam otto and his team decided to make two fantasy worlds except the one is where Ganon got his way and corrupted the land in the future and one is the present-day Hyrule so no unfortunately we do not get a game where the Master Sword is a lightsaber no matter how cool that may be it's sad really all of this past and future talk is made even more ridiculous when you consider the Hyrule historia the long and very convoluted storyline that links all the Zelda games together get it linked together all right fine on to the last point moving on your link is not my link with The Legend of Zelda spanning 30 years in a mountain of games you would have to be insane to try put all these games in some sort of timeline this is where the Hyrule historia comes in it's the official timeline spanning all the games and how they all fit together the timeline is pretty straight forward until we enter the world of time travel via or kareena of time from this game alone we get two different timelines and one of them splits into a child era at all they're this split hinges on whether or not link is successful in defeating Ganon what is the most amazing thing about this timeline however is at the very first game in the franchise is put near the end that's right the very first Legend of Zelda takes place near the end of the current timeline on the path confused much in this timeline the hero of time is defeated Ganon is revived and the legendary hero arrives late this also means of course that the link in one game is not necessarily the same link in a different game it is even referenced in Wind Waker that link in that game is the descendent of the hero of time from the past games talk about confusing we've all played a Mario game at one time or another and have learned to love him through the hundreds of games he appears in but do we really know the mustachioed plumber by diving into his history we'll learn about his time spent in the war his love interests and a Mario special even worse than the Super Mario Bros live-action movie now let's hop down the warp pipe into five weird facts you never knew about Mario Mario fought in the Vietnam War Mario loves to take on any challenge that comes his way including alien invaders countless enemies and of course Bowser but did you know that Mario also stepped up to the frontlines to take on enemy troops in a war you would if you had the classic Mario game known as Mario's bombs away the title was part of the Nintendo Game & Watch series a collection of handheld games released in the 1980s this 1983 game release features Mario in a combat uniform while fighting enemies in the jungle after retrieving a bomb Mario must make his way past four enemies without lighting the bomb on fire to make matters worse one of his own comrades smokes a cigar near a collection of spilled oil if the bombs are delivered without getting lit then they're tossed into an enemy tree if the bomb gets lit Mario blows up in a cartoon fashion if this happens three times Mario loses the game smell that fire flowers Sun nothing else in the world smells like that I love the smell of fire flowers in the morning this was some pretty gritty stuff for the typically family-friendly version of Mario the release of the game and the graphic designs make it seem like it was definitely set during the Vietnam War we're surprised this Soldier uniform wasn't included with all the other costumes in Super Mario Odyssey Mario Returns to Pauline Mario's love life doesn't seem very complicated on the surface for years and years his only love was known to be Princess Peach it's pretty common knowledge that the first female he rescued was a woman known as Pauline and this was in the original Donkey Kong arcade game many people assumed Pauline was out of the picture after Donkey Kong but this isn't the case the year was 1985 this was four years after Mario and Pauline were involved together in Donkey Kong and when the first Super Mario Bros was released another launch title with the NES was pinball Mario was featured on the cover of the title as he was mainly featured in a bonus game during the bonus game Mario would use a pinball to break away a platform and free Pauline from an enclosed area so romantic so technically at the start of Mario's romance with Peach he was still hanging on to his lingering feelings for Pauline maybe this is why Peach has been so hesitant to tie the knot with Mario and make a full commitment to the two-timing plumber Mario's original power-ups Mario abilities have really grown through the years the simplicity of mushrooms and flower power have evolved into some crazy things he's worn raccoon tails propeller hats and learned some crazy ice powers now he can transform into nearly anything thanks to his new sidekick Cappy while we love exploring all these new and different power-ups could have been completely different if the game went ahead with some of their original developmental plans instead of jumping on the heads of his enemies Mario's initial actions were to kick them if that didn't work then players were going to be able to get guns and shoot down their enemies can you just imagine how different Mario would be if guns were an essential part of the game it's not that hard for me I played a few flash games in my time Mario's movements in the game were supposed to be a lot different as well the speedy jumps and runs were going to be replaced with a flying jetpack Mario could wear the jetpack allowed him to seamlessly fly across levels and would have likely included a lot more in air enemies to battle against thankfully just seven months before the game's release the guns were packed away the jetpack was abandoned and the Mario we know and love was fully developed Mario's on thin ice when you think of live-action Mario content the horrible Super Mario Bros movie probably pops into your mind followed immediately by the absolutely terrifying Goomba faces as bad as the movie was it may seem a little better after seeing yo Mario performs on ice back when people had a bit more interest in ice skating shows networks would air in annual Ice Capades with performances tricks and novelty acts all on the ice the 1989 edition was hosted by Jason Bateman and Alyssa Milano hamming it up every time they appeared on screen never played video game you play video games with the video Mario on Ice may sound cool at first until you actually witness it Bowser opens up the segment singing about how beautiful he is and how he loves to do the bad things he does then we're introduced to a bizarre version of Princess Peach with a New York accent and a lot of attitude on top of it the costumes are so bulky and movements are so short you wouldn't even know the whole thing took place on ice it's incredibly cheesy Luigi launches some type of smoke gun at the enemies and Mario literally does nothing while Luigi gets all the credit Mario's age while playing Mario games as a child we simply saw a grown plumber with a moustache it's easy to assume he was in his early 30s or 40s just by the look alone imagine the shock that came in 2016 when Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced Mario's actual age to be somewhere between 24 and 25 years old what the what this changes everything you knew about the character like many cartoons he hasn't aged over the years this would also make Luigi around the same age considering they're fraternal twins but Mario's the one who was born first one of the oddest parts of this fact is looking back at the Super Mario Bros Super Show during the live-action segments of the show Mario was played by wrestling legend captain Lou albano Lou was nearly 60 years old when he played the part of Mario something doesn't seem right there we guess Mario's been spending too much time basking in the Sun without proper sunscreen a little longer and he might look like the movie maybe shaving off the mustache will make him look his proper age again either way you can only imagine what's in store for the hero once he turns 30 Zil de is one of Nintendo's most iconic female figures but even the most well-known characters have a few dark secrets of their own her family and background is shrouded in a cloud of mystery we can't wait to master of disguise probably one of the biggest debates centering around Zelda is whether her disguise as chic is female or male in all honesty it could go either way since we know Zelda has the magic to transform herself so it isn't too much of a stretch to consider she has used magic to change into a completely different person on the other hand she could have just been wearing male clothing the whole time in posing as a guy either way her ability to disguise herself is pretty invaluable and most of the Zelda franchise the main reason Zelda has to disguise herself throughout the series is for her own well-being both her disguises have been pretty influential as she can or korrina of time she was basically a ninja who teaches you songs in order to advance and she or he depending on what you think Zelda has become helps link and is an important asset along the way then one of our favorite disguises is tetra in Wind Waker we can't help but love and adore tetra even though she can be a bit bossy and headstrong tetra also proved Zelda is such a master of disguise that she's even fooled herself into thinking she was someone else if you could see Zelda disguise to someone else who or what would you like to see her disguised as in the next game she's incredibly powerful we've all seen the chaos and destruction Ganondorf is able to unleash upon the world in the Zelda games but what we've yet to see is the ability any of Zelda's incarnations have and yet Princess Zelda for the most part becomes an essential staple in defeating the final boss in many of the games it leads us to the question of why she's always hiding if she has these amazing abilities many of Zelda's incarnations were introduced as a very strong and gifted figure she usually has a name psychic or magical powers like telepathy or pre-k and we've also seen her have the ability to cast spells remove barriers and seals and she's pretty amazing with a bow as a weapon we also can't forget when disguised this tetra she's able to wield the Master Sword even if it's just briefly in the game she's one of the few characters besides links shown to be able to wield the blade of Evil's Bane it only allows for someone untouched by evil with a pure heart to use it which makes us question why she even needs link to rescue her all of the time we didn't get to see how well she could use the sword and we're sure she probably wouldn't be able to wield it as efficiently as any of the links could it does put her on another level though Navi was supposed to hate Zelda there was once an interview with Miyamoto which briefly discussed the origin of link and what the inspiration was for the character Miyamoto explained how the designers wanted to create a character who is recognizable and as a result sprite designer Takashi Tezuka looked for Disney as inspiration while putting together the design for link we could only think of one character link resembles and that's Peter Pan the green garments pointy hat and elf-like ears are a dead giveaway but there's also the fact he has a heart of pure gold and a fairy is a best friend anyone else think Navi is like the last Annoying version of Tinkerbell speaking of Navi that was some backstory to her character which never made it into the game but is still intriguing Navi was supposed to have developed a crush on link as their story progressed she's also going from a form of hatred towards every Zelda incarnation not because Princess Zelda was an evil character but because she wanted link all to herself it would have been a cool little addition to the story but the games are so complicated and adding girl problems to links already substantial list of issues didn't seem like a good fit so Miyamoto tossed aside the idea although we would have loved to see the comical twist of Navi hating Zelda for all the wrong reasons we're kind of glad because she may have just become as annoying as Tinkerbell was in Peter Pan Zelda is many different royal female characters fans of Zelda want to pull their hair out when they try to go into exactly who Zelda is and it becomes even worse when trying to explain to people who've never played the Zelda series that link is not zelda now let's get down to business shall we zelda is never the same character but it's the name given to several of the female hylians usually members of the royal family of high rule and they always play an important part in the series even though link is the main protagonist the royal family is the governing monarch family of Hyrule and consists of a reigning male sovereign a princess typically named Zelda and on occasion a prince no Queen has been introduced in the games although we do get a brief mention of Zelda's mother in the Legend of Zelda breath of the wild Hyrule has some pretty dark secrets of its own including the fact that it broke out into a hyrulean civil war has tribes ward over the all-powerful Triforce but finally the king of Hyrule United all the tribes under the banner of the Hylian royal family is this a video on Zelda or Game of Thrones one of the biggest mysteries of the game is Elda's mother's death as it has been claimed it was either accidental or an illness since it came on suddenly Zelda's mother's death was detrimental to Ganon's return we already know the queen of hyrule is a mysterious entity throughout the game since we only see any mention of her and her daughter and husband's diaries found in hyrule castle she also hasn't given a name but we know she is deceased by the time the game's events take place she lived at least six years before the birth of her daughter since its stated zelda was only six at the time then just beginning her training we see hints throughout the diary entries that the Queen cared deeply for zelda and knew she would become a strong figure with unlimited potential oh what a good mom although not explicitly stated in the game the Queen's death played a significant part in her husband and daughter's life and the downfall of Hyrule Zelda was saddened by the sudden loss of her mother but refused to cry about it her father believed this was because she was told her duty was to be a valiant and steady princess however we later see her internal struggle and how deeply affected she is by her mother's death especially when zelda can't awaken her powers and she becomes hopeless and distraught believing her mother was incorrect in her claims she had unlimited power and potential Princess Zelda turns to the study of ancient technology refusing to listen to her father about training harder but knowing the great calamity and the imminent threat of Ganon's return is upon them her father is killed and Hyrule is thrown into utter chaos sins eldest struggled to awaken her powers partially because of her mother's death it contributed to the fall of Hyrule and becomes an integral part of the Zelda series the prince of hyrule continues Zelda's legacy we've pretty much established the royal family is shrouded in mystery because we see many versions of it but if we go back to zelda to The Adventure of Link it gives a bit more insight into the mystery the king of high roll at one time possessed the United Triforce but decided to secretly seal one of the pieces away the Triforce of courage so when the Prince of Hyrule would ascended the throne there would be a missing piece this leads us to a few questions did the king of I will not trust the prince with the United Triforce or did he know there would be bad figures working at the Great Palace who would use the power of the Triforce for evil either way we discover Princess Zelda was entrusted by her dying father with a secret she couldn't divulge she knew where the location of the Triforce of courage was but after refusing to tell her brother their father's secret the magician threatens to curse her and put her into an enchanted sleep this dark magic causes the magician's own death the Triforce of courage was kept secret until a new hero could find it and begin the path to bring the kingdom back to peace one theory states the magician may have been one of the alter egos of Ganon similar to a Gangnam in a Link to the Past or he was under Ganon's command since he knew the secrets of the Triforce Zelda's brother was devastated by his comatose sister locked away in the castle and agreed to honor her by naming all daughters born to the royal family as Zelda so their history and tragedy would not be forgotten of course it's Linc who saves the sleeping princess zelda and it's her brother who continued her legacy throughout the series possessed zelda is the scariest figure in the game one of the darkest moments of The Legend of Zelda series is when were introduced to Ganon's puppet Zelda otherwise known as the possessed Zelda she becomes one of the bosses in the Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess which link must defeat and there's nothing more terrifying than hearing her speak in Ganon's voice so how does a powerful figure like Zelda become possessed by Ganon well it happens after link and Midna returned to Hyrule Castle after restoring the souls to their rightful place and finally defeating Zant Lincoln Midna discovers Zelda's lifeless body suspended in midair with Ganondorf seated in the throne Ganondorf taunts Lincoln Midna and then transforms into the Twilight particles Minda attempts to revive the lifeless Zelda but sees the Twilight particles enter her body as she becomes possessed by Ganondorf her eyes turn into a luminous yellow her skin becomes paler and she develops twilit symbols on her body as her hair darkens the possessed Zelda summons her sword and creates a barrier separating link and Midna so they're unable to help each other we basically see Zelda as her most dark and powerful self she is an easy defeat but if Lincoln managed to deflect the energy balls back at her Ganon will lose control of her body and Midna is able to revive Zelda who will help link defeat Ganon in the end this is one of those rare moments where we get to see the true power within Zelda which is unleashed in its darkest form but it's another reason why Twilight Princess is such a great title in the series Zelda gets stereotyped as a damsel in distress by Nintendo the most frustrating part of Zelda is that we already know how useful she is to link by playing previous titles where her role in helping him becomes essential in defeating Ganon will become so bothersome though is her lack of screen time in most of the games we already know she's powerful enough to wield a part of the Triforce and she could easily finish and solve most of the puzzles of the game and defeat the bosses yet we need link to save her and be the true hero Nintendo most likely underutilized Zelda's powers because there would be an outcry by fans who enjoy link being the hero after all he is no backstory and barely speaks because he's an easy way for players to step into the role of the hero and if link is always changing Nintendo found it pointless to give him much of a backstory the worst part was Elda is her best character representations are in disguised characters like tetra and Sheik where she appears to be powerless and link doesn't even know it's Zelda who's helping him it's a way for a Nintendo to balance Bo's Elda and Link's powers but if you're going to make Zelda a descendant of a goddess then why give her such limitations it's almost too early for Ganon to capture her which is just another point in the game which becomes bothersome and as the Zelda series continues there's an outcry for a title game which will either allow players to play as zelda or an additional female representation of link Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma released an official response to the female hero questions with these statements if we made link a female we thought it would either mess with the balance of the Triforce that's why we decided not to do it and if we have a princess Zelda as the main character who fights then what is Lincoln to do this obviously didn't answer the question of why fans are given an opportunity to play a Zelda or female hero but at least intend o gave us the ability to play as some of our favorite female characters from the Zelda series in Hyrule warriors we do have to admit it's sort of a strange dark secret from Nintendo not to allow Zelda more screen time and opportunities to battle alongside link it is 2018 after all it would be an interesting change to the series we hope you enjoyed checking out some of to Zelda's
