[Music] hello this is shannon with black sheep house in today's video i'm sharing a complete makeover of this dresser it's going to be very detailed and nice and slow so you can follow along i'm also going to be sharing my one step paint recipe which if you've been around black sheep house for a while you know is a great way to save money and it's a wonderful finish i'm also going to be sharing a type of hardware that if you hate filling and sanding holes is going to be a lifesaver for you flipping this piece is going to be a lot of fun the first thing you notice are these outdated chippendale or batwing style hardware and i want you to remember that that's the first thing you notice that's the thing that really stands out about this piece and makes it look old and ugly so just updating the hardware is going to make a huge difference and it breaks my heart when i see furniture flippers taking the hardware off stuff like this spray painting it black or gold or something and putting it back on oh it breaks my heart because it ruins the makeover you really are losing so much money for for selling pieces or interior design you're you're losing so much aesthetic when you choose not to update the hardware so do yourself a favor invest in some hardware and i'm gonna have lots of links for you guys for hardware on my channel and stuff so just get new hardware okay i'll get off my soapbox now speaking of soap i'm cleaning this piece with dawn you could use palm olive i like that one a lot i'm using a scrub daddy and warm water and then i have this dollar store scrubber that really does a nice job of getting in the nooks and crannies and i've found that getting in those nooks and crannies really makes a big difference for bleed through which um my pieces i would notice bleed through happening a lot in the nooks and crannies and that was because i wasn't doing a good enough job of getting in those crevices and cleaning them now hardware um is hard to get a good look at without drilling holes and stuff like that so sometimes it helps to have an extra set of hands somebody that can hold the piece there for you while you check it out and ideally you want to put the hardware you want to decide where your hardware is going to be before you paint the piece because you can use the existing holes for a reference point and when you go to drill them and stuff like that i know that's not always an option and you might not always have an extra pair of hands so one other thing you could do is lay the dresser on its back and you can test out the hardware that way because it won't move around on you [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so the next thing that i'm doing is using this multi-tool that i bought at walmart for around twenty dollars it's done a great job for me i you know i only use it on a handful of projects but it's handheld it's not intimidating and i really like it for altering these types of legs i have the wood cutting tool on the edge and that's the one that works the best for me of course i try to get these um as straight as possible but you know don't stress yourself out if yours is a little wonky or a little funky in a couple of spots most times it really is something so small and doesn't matter i also don't completely fill every single ding and chip on a piece of furniture for the prices that i'm selling my furniture in general between you know three and four hundred dollars my clients are ecstatic they're so happy and they care so much more about the aesthetic and design than they do about a perfect finish or a completely flaw-free piece of furniture trust me on this and i guess you probably are a little like this if you follow this channel but perfection is so much less important than something being pretty it really it really is and so give yourself a break as long as you're making a pretty piece of furniture for your own home or to sell people are going to be very happy don't over criticize your work i'll give you a little story and for reference i was a dancer for many years and there were so many people in the dance world who were great technicians is what they would call them their technique was just perfect but they didn't really have the artistic expression that really made the dancer stand out and so think of it that way that you could you can be a great technician or you might be a better artist i am the latter i'm definitely much more creative than i am like super detailed and technique driven although i do appreciate those things so there is a place for people like us as clearly as i've shown you guys in this channel i do well with furniture refinishing and you can too even if your stuff isn't perfect so here is that hack i was talking about laying the dresser on its back and trying out different hardware this works for me sometimes you just need to really get all the hardware that you own out and try it all to see which one you like the best on the piece all right so now i'm gonna share with you guys my one step paint recipe and if you already know how to make this great i tried to make this as clear and easy to follow as possible so hopefully i did let me know if i missed something but basically you need one cup of paint one cup of primer one cup of poly and then you're going to use a little bit of calcium carbonate mixed with water in fact i've got it down like detail oriented as i could these are all water-based products that i'm using water-based paint i'm using the ovation paint but you could use any paint that you like any leftover house paint that is water-based um that you would like to use it does not matter the sheen it could be matte satin semi-gloss that all is fine mixed together then the primer is water-based as well i've used zinzer and i've used kills primer but i have no experience with any other brands of primer so one cup of paint so far one cup of primer trust me it is misleading looking at this video that they're equal parts so far but i promise you they are equal parts one cup paint one cup primer you saw me pour it it just looks like there's way more paint because of the way it kind of settled into the container and then i'm using one cup of water-based polyurethane and i have used several brands of this verithane bear um minwax and whatnot so it works great one cup of poly so so far you have one cup of paint one cup of primer one cup of poly i like to mix those up together on their own and honestly you don't even need the calcium carbonate that's purely a bonus ingredient that just gives it a more matte finish i prefer a matte finish so i really like adding it but it is not necessary for your paint to adhere or be durable or look great but you will need to mix the calcium carbonate in with water so it's 1 8 cup water mixed with 1 4 cup calcium carbonate and i mix those in it it gets like this kind of goopy consistency um it's but get it all blended in before you add it to your paint mixture so it's this watery consistency and it um goes in after you have stirred the other ingredients now i store mine in an airtight mason jar in a cool dark environment dry environment also and that they have stored really well for me but i can't promise that they'll store great for you i don't know how long the shelf life is for any of this stuff you know use at your own risk i guess i should say i'm not a scientist or anything like that but i have had great success with this paint personally and a lot of people have responded to me in messages and things like that saying that they love this paint and that it saved them so much money and i just enjoy sharing the word because i know it can be really helpful anytime i share this recipe i get asked if it would work really well for a kitchen cabinet makeover and honestly i you know i'd feel fine using it for a kitchen cabinet makeover but i would probably prime first and i would do a clear coat so i don't know if it would save you as much time as you might think if you did it the way i would recommend but kitchen cabinets get so much abuse and they have so much water around them and they get scrubbed so much that i just would want to be on the safe side and prime first and do clear coat afterwards and so that's just me personally anyway um this hardware that i'm using is the the wood stuff that i was so excited about because it covers up the existing holes and so it's going to save me so much time i don't have to fill and sand any holes because it's just going to cover those right up and if you're like me and you don't love filling and sanding holes this hardware is a great hack to have on hand the other great thing about this hardware is that it is wood and so you could it has a clear coat on it but you could sand that off and stain this hardware any color you want or you could paint it so you have a lot of options as far as the look you're going for now i did consider whether or not i was good because i'm going to be putting baskets in this dresser and i wanted them to match perfectly i was lucky enough to find baskets online that matched perfectly but you know if you were gonna do like a wood top and stain it you could do the handles to match and that would be a really nice look yes it's finally time to paint i did use 220 grit sandpaper and then i finished off with 400 grit sandpaper because i had so much wood filling that i did on this piece i did mention i didn't fill every single hole but i filled probably like 80 of them i don't mind a lived-in look for the furniture if it's like too perfect i feel like sometimes it looks a little weird for my pur my personal decor taste okay and the type of stuff that i sell and work with designers on the two designers that i work with tend to do like studio mcgee one of them does like a studio mcgee vibe and then the other one does this french vibe and so the type of the way that i refinish things they love anyway um i do a paint on and then a roll-off method i uh you know it takes a little bit of finesse and practice to get the hang of this and to really master it but i have done that and you can too you just gotta keep at it if you still notice that you have a lot of texture when you have painted a piece you probably had too much paint on your roller too much paint on your brush so you really have to master thin layers for this technique to work you want to imagine if you've ever sprayed well i'm sure you've used spray paint if you haven't used a professional paint sprayer before and you know how thin the spray paint goes on that's how thin you want your paint to look after you've done the paint and roll-on method so it takes some practice and it also takes keeping a couple of rollers nearby to refresh your roller because it will over time as you're doing the piece it will get saturated with paint and then you'll start to notice more and more texture what i personally do is i keep about three rollers nearby and you know a third of the way through the project i will it's usually like each coat right so like i'll do a coat of paint i end up doing about three coats of paint when i do this method um i'll do a coat of paint and then i'll switch the roller out i'll wash the other one so i reuse rollers you know definitely reuse them and i've had a lot of success with the whiz foam rollers from lowe's they say cabinets and doors on them not the furniture rollers i did a big video where i tested out a bunch of different sponges and rollers and you can see in that video that the finish is far superior using the whiz foam roller now i am looking for an amazon dupe especially now that i have an amazon storefront and i'm going to be trying to like you know rally everything gather everything together for you guys in one spot where you can just buy things and bonus i'll get commission and stuff but for now i'm using the lowe's foam rollers from wiz and they work really great so you can see through this finish you see how sheer it is right like i might put it on there in a gloop with my brush but then i blend i smooth it all out this doesn't work out in the sun this this type of technique you have to work in a cool garage okay if your garage is hot and dry and sun is shining on you this technique your paint will dry up too quickly one thing you can do is add phloetrol to your paint or another type of extender and that will work and that's what i do when i when i'm working in the summer months but in the winter the garage is nice and cool enough that i can get this done it also only works with the type of paints that i've recommended on this channel so this technique works really well with valspar furniture and cabinet enamel it works really well with rust-oleum milk paint although that's a bit more textured of a paint it works really well with my one step paint recipe it works really well with general finishes milk paint and ovation and bear paint so i can't really speak to how it would work with chalk paint i don't work with chalk paint anymore i think chalk paint is the devil and i wasted a year of my business maybe a year and a half my husband and i used to do this full time together and we used chalk paint exclusively and it gave us the amount of headaches and the amount of times that we would be out there spraying oh my gosh you guys like just i trust me i've used chalk paint i am very familiar with the product and i am very anti-chalk paint it causes so much streakiness when you go to apply your clear coat if you have had a lot of trouble with streaks in your finish you definitely want to avoid chalk paint and then you know this one step paint recipe is great you you've got to develop a little bit of finesse to avoid streaks in your finish one way to do that is going from one end all the way to the other with either your brush or your roller like i'm doing and you have to keep the paint the paint all has to be wet by the time you get to the other end if it's all if it's drying up on you and you're rolling over a dry spot then you are gonna have uh streaks or different looks in the sheen of it even if it's all the same paint even if it's all mixed together and stuff like that that's just how paint works um that that brings up another thing too is just make sure that you're stirring your paint as you move through your project that does help as well but basically you hear a lot of times keep a wet edge and to keep a wet edge you have to work quickly and go from one end to the other so if you do a roll and then you go for your next roll and it's right next to it that edge needs to be wet so that they can blend together if if it's dry then you're going to get some streaky looks and so just want to keep that roller moving you want to keep moving keep going it is hard when you're doing thin coats to keep everything wet but i promise you um you can do it you know just gotta keep practicing it doesn't matter as much on the first and second coat it's really that third coat your last coat of paint that really matters that everything be wet as you move from one side to the other especially with dark colors the lighter colors are going to be way more forgiving and easy for you so if you're struggling with streakiness you know keep practicing um the technique with the lighter colors because it won't matter at the end as much and then you know move your way into the darker colors [Music] [Music] [Music] i guess i didn't get it on camera but i did do a light sanding with a 400 grit sanding sponge before i did my last coat just to remove any debris that might fall in the finish not because i'm trying to smooth out the texture or anything but just to remove any debris hairs or things like that but do not sand after your last coat okay also my screws that came with the handles were a little bit short for these drawers and rather than going and buying specialty screws i'm just going to drill the backs of these um with this little attachment i it comes with if you have a drill like this then you probably have an attachment or you can buy one i'll make sure and link it i don't know what it's called but anyway it just like makes the drawer thinner in the back there i think they call it like inset or something okay it took me a while to find the exact size baskets and colors that i needed and i'll make sure to link these i got them i found them on walmart first but they were six dollars more than they were on amazon so i ended up buying them off amazon i did have to buy two sets because i needed two of the exact same size and so i spent about sixty dollars on baskets which is way more than i would normally spend on a dresser but i'm going to use the other baskets for my home so i really only spent 13 dollars per basket if you like kind of add that in and if you didn't want to use the baskets for your home you could sell them on facebook marketplace or whatever okay so let's take a look at the before and then uh wow it needed a lot of work didn't it but good and solid and here is the after i had some of that leftover faux cane from another project that i did and i just laid it on top it's not glued on or anything like that and i will give it to the person that i sell it to um that comes with it and the baskets will come with it you know i don't i'll charge probably around 400 for something like this and it's staged with um [Music] some pompous grass in a clear jug there and a thrifted vase and here is some nice before and after footage for you thank you guys so much for subscribing to my channel for watching my content for engaging and commenting i really appreciate each and every one of you i'm so happy to
