hi it's taryn and stella from nipple university today we'll be teaching you how to play furnace so hopefully you'll be in a position to play the game after finishing this video coming up now let's learn how to play furnace game design by ivan lashon and published by hobby world let's get to the table furnace is a game of industrial revolution era capitalism and in four rounds of play players will bid to own companies then run those companies to produce upgrade and sell resources whoever earns the most money after four rounds wins the game to set up each player chooses a color and takes the player piece and the four numbered discs in that color the player piece has no function in the game but reminds you of your color when all your discs are in play find and shuffle the 5 character cards which show this icon on the back and deal one at random to each player this demonstrates the special ability that you'll be playing with then find the five starting companies they show a company on one side and this icon on the other shuffle these and then deal one at random to each player face up each player then takes a one-off starting resources of whatever is printed at the top of their starting company card if you are playing with two players you will need to set aside one color of discs to serve as a non-player character the non-player does not gain a character card or a starting company shuffle the rest of the company cards into a deck with the non-upgraded side at the top this is the side that shows icons at the very top of the card and shows the bottom row of text with no color this one will be flipped this way when shuffled into the deck set up the general supply of coal iron oil and upgrade tokens as well as these multiplier tokens as the resource are not component limited choose a first player and you're now ready to play furnace is played in four rounds tracked with this round marker and each round is broken into two phases the auction phase and the production phase to set up for the auction phase first cut the company deck so that the card you've been able to see on top is not the first card dealt out then deal from left to right a number of company cards equal to the number of players in the game plus four this will be 6 in a 2 player game you do not count the non-player character then starting with the first player and going clockwise around the table players will take it in turns to place one of their auction disks onto a company in order to bid for either its ownership or use of that company there are only two rules when placing a disk a company card cannot have more than one disk of the same number and cannot have more than one disk of the same colour so red on its next turn could put this one anywhere there's no restriction black could then choose to place a 3 and could put it anywhere except for this company which already has a 3. yellow could then place this one choosing anywhere except this card which already has a yellow disk or this card which already has a one play continues like this until all players are out of disks there are special rules for the two player auction using the non-player character which we'll come back to at the end of the video next you'll resolve each of the companies from left to right across this row whichever player has placed the highest number disk on a company will earn permanent ownership of that company card but first you will resolve the compensation effect which is printed at the top of the card for all disks which are not the highest this is either a set of resources which the compensated player gains or a production effect which the compensated player may carry out the number of times that this is gained or carried out is equal to the number on the compensated player's disk so for the first company the yellow player would gain two iron before the red player took the company at the second company the black player gains two coal three times for a total of six before once again the red player earns the company at the third company the black player could exchange two coal for one oil up to twice bearing in mind that these are optional before the yellow player earns the company and so on until all of the companies have been resolved you'll then proceed to the production phase players may resolve their production phases simultaneously as they'll be playing with only their own cards and resources in this phase players may run each of their acquired companies once each they may choose to run them in any sequence and may change the sequence from round around when resolving a company the compensation effect printed at the top is completely ignored the player resolves only the effects shown in the bottom part of the card and if multiple effects are active they are resolved from top to bottom an effect with no color is not yet active two of the effect types we've already seen some will simply gain your resources this one for example gains too coal some allow you to upgrade resources here you could convert two coal into one oil and perform that up to twice this one here present on all players starting cards gains you want upgrade token the other type of resource in the game this type of effect here is how you convert the resources you've produced into money which is how you earn points in the game here you could convert to coal into two money and do that up to twice money has no function in the game other than serving as your victory points you cannot spend it on anything you simply accumulate it and see who has the most at the end of the game the fourth type of action in the game present only on the starting card is to upgrade companies to upgrade a company spin an upgrade token and a coal and then flip a company card over to its upgraded site now both of the production effects on this card are active if you haven't previously activated this card on this round you'll be able to do both effects immediately if you have previously activated the card you upgraded then you won't be able to do its upgraded effect until next round you may perform as many upgrades on the same round as you wish and your starting company is never upgraded once you've finished resolving all of the companies that you wish to resolve in this round your production phase is over at the end of the fourth rounds production phase the game is over and whoever has acquired the most money wins in the event of a tie whoever has the most leftover resources wins but otherwise resources left in your supply are not worth any money and so you need to make sure that your production chain has enough sales actions to cover the amount you're producing when playing with two players you will use a non-player color during the auction in order to fill up some of the spaces and create some extra competition the non-player will always place discs last in turn order irrespective of which of the human players has the first player marker to determine where the non-player places discs roll the six-sided die and then place the lowest legal number onto that numbered card from left to right having rolled a three here the three cannot legally be placed on this card but the four can and so the non-player would place the four while if there is no legal placement on the card which is rolled look at the next card to the right and so on until you find a legal card wrapping around from card six to card one if necessary so here it could not be placed here here or here and would therefore be placed on this card the non-player color never gains resources and so you won't resolve any compensation effects on cards that it doesn't win on cards that it does win the human players will take their compensations before any of those cards are simply removed from the game and that is how to play furnace we hope you enjoyed this video and we hope it helps you if you find this video helpful you can please help us by hitting the like button subscribe to us
