FULL SUBTITLING WORKFLOW with Subtitle Edit

let's set things straight automatic subtitles are great true they're cheap and timesaving also true but are they as good as human translators well no not yet and something I recently realized is that there's ton of misinformation around that and I will tell you why I've heard plenty of people say they see no difference but if you're familiar with this word and maybe you watch subtitled content on a daily basis or you're a translator and subtitler then you will know it's not something we do randomly without any rules so the goal for this video is to show you the differences between automatic and manual subtitles through my workflow and also to explain to you everything you need to know and do to make them perfect so let's go I will use a video of my friend Rafa which you can find here on YouTube so the first step will be to open subtitle edit and create automatic subtitles so we can have something to start from open the video up here add the sound waves in case the software won't do that for you and then head to video audio to text if you haven't watched my tutorial on subtitle edit I would recommend you to catch up with that one so you will know how to properly use the software in that video we also learn how to change the settings but I will quickly show it again head up here on options settings and make sure to set stuff like the characters per line according to the guidelines again the client might give you specific rules to follow so you can change the settings according to those otherwise you would want to stay around 45 characters per line let's wait for the software to create the subtitles and let's have a look at those to see why they're not perfect okay so we can go through the first minutes of this video and I will just hit play so we can see what changes should be made next I've always wanted to know how much YouTube creators get paid and how it works to be monetized here on YouTube I've watched videos like this before but they are usually from very big channels uh so it was hard for me to understand what to expect for my own channel my channel started growing recently it's still somewhat small so I want to share my journey as getting monetized I finally got monetized about 3 months ago and I want to share with you my first paycheck and all the Analytics and stats so you can understand a little bit more of how YouTube works and how YouTube pays its creators I don't know if you also noticed but in some cases the software couldn't pick up the audio and there are no captions available it's often split incorrectly and sometimes there are too many characters per second meaning that the subtitle is too fast and that makes it hard for people to read the whole caption properly so what I would do from now on is go through each subtitle individually and see if there are mistakes to correct I've always wanted to know how much YouTube creators get paid in this first case what I will do is end the first subtitle after get paid so that the whole sentence has its own meaning in one subtitle the reason why we do that is because subtitles need to be a formal support in order to follow a video as easily as possible splitting it after a linguistic unit allows the human brain to properly catch the meaning of the sentence while interrupting that sentence and continuing it on the next subtitle makes it way more annoying so as you see creating subtitles means not only respecting technical guidelines but also following specific syntactic rules creers get paid and how it works to be monetized here on YouTube this one is pretty much perfect again something you should consider are the sound waves which can actually help you understand where to end the subtitle you can see a tiny gap between this one and the next one I would also split the two lines like this so after the comma let's keep going uh so it was hard for to understand what to expect for my own channel my channel started grow I am going to adjust this subtitle slightly so that it's perfectly synchronized and I would split this one into smaller subtitles because it's pretty long as well make sure you also check the length of the captions up there on the list and this one is around 6 seconds I am actually making two subtitles out of it because not only do we have this Gap but also to avoid putting too much text on the screen as you see here if you cut a part of the text from the previous subtitle you can click on add text from clipboard here so you don't have to type that all over again again so I want to share my journey as getting monetized try and split the sentence in the true lines so that you can respect the linguistic unit and also make them balanced meaning that there's a similar amount of characters per line I finally got monetized about 3 months ago you can see the process is pretty much the same every time I will always split the subtitles when the person stops talking and takes a breath we could say but always trying to give a whole meaning to it we don't want to leave the viewers hanging waiting for the second part of the sentence to appear on the screen let's speed up the process now because it's pretty much the same for the next subtitles another thing I would recommend is to always be precise with the punctuation as well because it gives a certain Pace to the reading and helps understand everything better as you can see here we have another very long SE title it's over 6 seconds and we want to avoid that whenever we can after listening to it we can decide where to split [Music] it [Music] [Music] if you exceed the characters spine the software will immediately highlight the subtitle in my case I'm okay with leaving the 47 characters in that first line because I have no specific rules from the client on the contrary if you must respect that limit then make sure you change it and split it [Music] differently [Music] on my f first day monetized I made $ 5320 okay this one is just crazy 12 seconds oh gosh let's change it right away you can clearly see where to split the [Music] subtitle same goes for the next three subtitles which all last over 7 Seconds this is how you should proceed when captioning a video and as you can see the automatic subtitles have several flows despite it being a good solution to speed up the process once you're done you can save the project and Export your SRT file as usual if you're working for a client you can send that file directly or you can choose to burn it on the video by using specific editing softwares thank you so much for
