madonna lived in stood in nazareth in palestine who brought it here tradition says the angels modern academics say the crusaders fascinating journey to the most sacred roots of christianity [Music] for at least 700 years the city of laredo has attracted those devoted to the madonna millions of pilgrims flocked to this hill from every corner of the world to pray and pay homage to the madonna within the house where as a girl she received the announcement from the archangel gabriel accepting the divine will these inviable and eternal stones whose walls saw jesus grow have always been the focus for extraordinary events that man cannot explain so over the centuries laredo has become a cosmopolitan city that was born and evolved around the sanctuary as if in a protective embrace around mary's holy house here everything speaks of her the house stands in the center of the immense basilica under the coupler painted by makari it is a pearl set in a magnificent marble treasure chest designed by brahmante the entire basilica is a true masterpiece here the greatest artists of the italian renaissance worked for the glory of what is believed to be the house of mary francesco di giorgio martinio giuliano de maliano bramante antonio and juliano da sangalo are just some of the artists who from 1469 onwards worked on this magnum opus when you step over the threshold the gloomy silence is only lit by candles and one is immediately struck by the humility and the simplicity of the walls that form the house it is formed of three stone walls dark with smoke and time inside there is an ancient altar known as the altar of the apostles and an aperture in the western wall called the angels window marking the point at which the archangel gabriel entered the house to make the annunciation what did the house of mary in nazareth look like are the walls we find in laredo truly those of the house of the annunciation which took place more than two thousand years ago for many centuries scholars from many disciplines have attempted to find answers about the authenticity of the three walls venerated in laredo the research was first carried out by analyzing numerous documents held in archives throughout italy the 20th century also saw archaeological geological and architectural studies father giuseppe santerelli director of the universal congregation of the holy house is considered one of the most important scholars of the sanctuary of laredo this capuchin friar has compared the results of archaeological digs under the holy house carried out between 1960 and 1965 by the famous archaeologist nereo alfieri with those executed in nazareth in the basilica of the annunciation between 1955 and 1960 the first question the pilgrim asks is what was the house of mary of nazareth like her acoustics then in front of the grotto there were the stone walls that formed the house of the madonna itself because the grotto the archaeological digs in nazareth have shown was especially used for storage according to the centuries-old tradition of lurato these three walls in laredo belonged to the house in which mary of nazareth was born and lived they were brought to this hill which at the time belonged to the city of rakhinati in the night between december the 9th and 10th 1294 and were placed on the ground without foundations on what was an ancient public road the archaeological digs in laredo confirmed the tradition [Music] the house of the raider has no foundations and this is very unusual the experts on house building in makei region say that a house is never built without foundation why was it built like this why no foundations and why on a public road it's as if to show that this house is not rooted here that this is a hospital that belongs to a voyage a public road that is open to the east having no foundations it was a fragile house and that's why it's been necessary to defend it because otherwise it would have fallen what is more archaeology has shown that the northern part of the house was partly laid on a ditch probably a drain beside the road that is the reason why it was necessary to build supporting arches under that section of the wall in the 13th century and then there are strange construction elements in this house it has only one door which has been filled in but we can still see the beam well this house here in laredo is directed north and the local people never build towards the north because the winds are north another in nazareth however it would be perfect these characteristics also tell us that this house is not local that it came from another part of the world the original door in the northern wall was later filled in here in laredo in order to open other doors which would make it easier for the many faithful to enter the holy house the position of the original door was on the longer side of the house and not on the shorter side as was more usual in italy if we ideally transport these three walls from laredo to the grotto of nazareth every dimension every size and every proportion match perfectly and the result is that this is a typical house from 1st century palestine the most significant confirmation of the palestinian origin of the house is to be found in laredo and comes first of all from the analysis of the walls in the original part up to approximately three meters from the ground the stones of the walls are identical to those used in palestine at the time of jesus we can see the herringbone pattern and the small channels which are a well-known style of building in that area [Music] the finishing of the stones is in the nabataean style this particular ornamental working of the face of the stones there are wonderful examples in the shepherds cave in bethlehem they're found in the holy sepulchre in jerusalem so we have definite means of comparison the apostles altar has until now been neglected by scholars yet recent analysis has shown that the stones are of palestinian origin finished with the same nebatian technique as the stones of the holy house probably it was an altar used by the first disciples of jesus who immediately after the resurrection transformed the house of mary of nazareth into a place of cult we are therefore in the presence of one of the most ancient altars in christianity [Music] that is not all there is further proof of the authenticity of the holy house another perfect correspondence with mary's grotto in the holy land we can see engraved markings there are about 60 graffiti which can be dated between the first and third century after christ all symbols that we find in the holy land such as crosses with two bars the t-square and the initials of jesus in hebrew the graffiti expressed typical judeo-christian symbology one is particularly important because it's written in greek with two letters in hebrew and it says jesus christ in greek letters which means oh jesus christ son of god the same invocation using the same greek words can be found in nazareth as part of a graffito at the start of a long inscription of what is known as the conan grotto the graffito also has two hebrew letters a wow which signifies the power of christ because the wow was in the shape of a horn in the hebrew letter and the horn was sounded at times of victory after a victorious battle and then which refers in a judeo-christian numerical interpretation to the son of god to jesus christ we've also found the remains of an ostrich which is totally inappropriate here while they were frequent in palestine because ostrich eggs were hung in churches as ornaments and travellers at the time such as nicola de pogebonsi even some in the holy sepulchre probably they were to be found in the church of nazareth in the house of nazareth and have been included as a sign of the providence of this house so how have such ancient walls remained intact up to modern times between the second and third centuries then in the fifth century the byzantines built a basilica even more beautiful and artistic which replaced the judeo-christian one in finland and finally in the 11th and 12th centuries the french crusaders built a monumental basilica so that since the second and third centuries the house has always been protected inside a sacred building archaeology and studies on the construction have therefore shed light on the authenticity of the house supporting the secular devotion that surrounds it today these new sources seem to offer a clear response the three walls venerated in laredo are without doubt of palestinian origin and date from the period in which jesus christ lived there is still a mystery that has not been solved an ancient and fascinating mystery how did these walls come from the holy land to italy and specifically to the market region who brought them here and why for more than seven centuries the church believed that the holy house was transported miraculously the lord to save the house of his beloved mother from the devastation of the muslims who had invaded the holy land carried out one of his greatest miracles in the night between may the 9th and 10th 1291 he caused the house of mary to be transported by the celestial angels who flying through the air and over the sea moved it from nazareth to a place in croatia after about three years the angels again moved the house carrying it to the other side of the adriatic in italy here the house of mary was first placed on a hill near the sea and then eight months later it was placed in a forest near wreckage after some time the angels once again carried the house of mary to monte prado the present hill above loreto in a field that belonged to two brothers finally in the night between december the 9th and 10th 1294 the same messengers of god moved the holy house placing it a few meters outside the field belonging to the two brothers in its present position which is over an ancient public road and this is the miracle of what is known as the translation venerated for centuries by christianity [Music] in the last 20 years however a theory has spread accepted by the church according to which the holy house was transported by human hands probably by the crusaders fleeing the holy land the historical period the end of the 13th century coincides with the last crusade and precisely with the days of the fall of jerusalem to the muslims according to this theory it was a noble christian family named anjali angels who when fleeing from their property in the holy land ordered the transportation of the reliquary popular tradition then transformed the surname of the anjali family into the mystery of the celestial angels padre santorelli has sought with his studies historical and archaeological clues that could confirm this theory [Music] in 1900 the bishop of dijon laundria consulted a scholar who was the personal physician to pope leo the 13th his name was giuseppe news had spread around paris that this scholar had found secret documents in the vatican archives and that they spoke of human intervention in the transportation of the holy house of laredo consulted the scholar and le pony confirmed that in fact there are various documents according to which at the end of the 13th century a family called anjali descendants of the emperors of constantinople salvaged the house of the madonna all the materials of which it was built and transported it to italy unfortunately these documents are secret and they've not been released however in 1985 another document came to light the chartelarium kulesansi number 181 this document is a sort of receipt an ancient notorious act listing the goods that ithamara or tamara of the angeli family brought as a dowry to her future husband philip ii of anjou many precious goods in the second place we find sanctus petrus ex domo domine de pare vaginas that is the holy stones carried away from the house of the virgin madonna mother of god the marriage took place in september october 1294 the tradition says that on december the 10th 1294 the house arrived here so the chronological facts fit perfectly according to the capuchin friar there are archaeological relics found in the holy house that further confirm this theory the two coins found in the lower levels of the walls are important because they're the only ones found here that date from the period of the translation because they were minted by gui de la roche duke of athens who reigned from 1287 to 1308 and was the son of elena anjali cousin to itamara the wife of philip ii of honju who brought these stones as part of a diary so these coins are very important because they can be traced back to the anjali family at the time of the translation used in ancient times to indicate protagonists of an event so a date of the building as it was constructed what is more during the excavations at laredo two small red fabric crosses typically used during the crusades were found in a cavity right below the angel's window so why were the holy walls transported to laredo in particular at that time the pope was the famous celestine v who was also linked to the andew family he never set foot outside the city of rome abdicating on december 13 1294 he was replaced in the vatican by the bishop salvo d recanati in the role of vicario irbis who had the power to manage the reliquaries and the indulgences who belonged to this territory because laredo did not exist at that time so this is the proof on which the theory of the human transportation of the holy house is based an explanation that has spread during the last 30 years and that is intended to give a historical explanation for the presence of this reliquary in italy nonetheless for centuries the church of laredo spread and considered true the theory of the angelic translation which gave rise to a particular liturgy based on this extraordinary miracle the first authoritative documents in support of the tradition date from 1400 such as the writings of the blessed giovan batista spanioli known as il mantovano who in 1479 in a letter written in latin to the cardinal de la rovery tells what he saw when he visited the holy house for the first time and there before my eyes lay a plaque rusty from its long exposure in its antiquity on which there was written the reason this place had attained such great notoriety so the die driven by pious zeal in order that the negligence of man which generally besmirches even the most outstanding things should not cancel the memory of such a wonderful fact gathered at the plaque consumed by woodworm and dust the witness to the events the facts that giovann batista espanol narrates form a precise account of all the miraculous translations of the holy house from nazareth to teresato in croatia from here to the area of reconati first in a forest then in a field belonging to two brothers and finally on the public road two other historians giacomo ricci in 1469 and pierre giorgio tolomei known as il te romano in 1472 speak of this ancient plaque and of the same inscription is there however any objective proof of the truth of this inscription it would seem so in the places mentioned by the text of the ancient plaque there are tangible traces of the miraculous passage of the holy house the first location indicated on the plaque is a castle near fumey which was called telsato nowadays known as trisat in croatia where the holy house coming from nazareth was placed in the night between may the 9th and 10th 1291 in a place that at that time was a forest avenue the woodsmen who were going to work in the forest noticed these walls that had suddenly appeared in the woods of tessarta they were amazed and wondered because the day before there had been no house on that site and large numbers of people came from curiosity or for devotion to see it to visit it and to pray but without knowing where it came from how it had got there or what it was the then priest of terzato don alessandro giorgovich was immediately informed of the fact but at the time he was very ill and could not move from home [Music] according to the tradition that is when the madonna appeared to him revealing that this was her house from [Music] nazareth so he immediately went suddenly and was miraculously healed he went to visit this little chapel and he told the inhabitants of the place about its origin about the revelation that the madonna had made to him and that this was the holy house of nazareth brought there by the angels nicolo frangipane the lord of the city of tessato at that time wanted to ascertain the truth of the event and he sent a delegation to palestine with the task of finding out whether the holy house still stood in nazareth they arrived in nazareth and they found that the holy house of mary was no longer there in nazareth but that the foundations remained which corresponded perfectly in their perimeter to the perimeter of the three walls that had been found in tessata after remaining there for three and a half years on december the 10th 1294 the holy house disappeared from tessato [Music] another important historical testimony to the actual presence of the holy house in tosato comes from the pope the blessed ubana of the fifth who in 1367 sent to the people of tosato an image of the madonna of loretto representing the miraculous translation of the holy house by the angels he sent it to tosato and it is still visible today a consolation for their loss of the holy house so here is a pope who confirms the truth of this miraculous fact what is more according to historical documents ubana v was the first pope to visit the sanctuary of loreto in 1367 according to the traditions of laredo the holy house after disappearing from tessato appears in various locations on the other side of the adriatic before definitely coming to rest on the hill of laredo one of these intermediate translations was to positore near ancona [Music] on a hill above the port where it remained for nine months in 1295 is still the name of this district of ancona and derives from the latin posts at aura in memory of the holy house which was set down here and was worshipped by the inhabitants you recorded the presence of the holy house on the hill of positora near ancona in 1295 is testified by a small church in memory of this miraculous event and also by two memorial tablets which were placed in this little church one in the late 1200s and one in the 1500s the older of the two memorial tablets carried the inscription kita futa which can be translated as from here fled after landing the madonna of loretta not of loreto but of loretta because at the time the house was probably still located in a forest belonging to a lady who was called loretta in fact the memorial tablet was probably placed in the little church of posatora immediately after the disappearance of the holy house which according to tradition then landed in a forest near recanati belonging to a lady by the name of laureta so this memorial tablet dating from the year 1200 bears witness both to the location of the holy house in the forest of the lady loretta following its stay in positora and the truth of its stay on the hill of positora itself unfortunately the older of the two memorial tablets has been lost probably during the repeated refurbishing of the little church but there are various witnesses who state that they have seen the lost tablet [Music] it was in a sort of niche between the floor and the wall and there was an inscription on a gray stone it was stone not marble just a stone and then there was an inscription repository and i saw that there was i remember that my mother everyone said that there was a memorial tablet with an inscription here rested the madonna of loretto although the older memorial tablet has disappeared the other dating from the 16th century is still visible in the church of positore and it carries this inscription in this forest stood the holy house of the mother of god for nine months also the presence and the veneration in the church of positora of an ancient icon of the virgin and child dating from the late 13th century confirms the period in which the first chapel was built when the holy house arrived here what is more in the same period in the city of ancona other churches were built and dedicated to the presence of the holy house on the hill of positore [Music] these miraculous facts of the translations were seen by eyewitnesses who swore that they had witnessed it in the various locations in particular in particular that of ancona was seen by the inhabitants of a hill called barca leone inside this chapel there is also a painting of the holy house which is flying in from the sea and which then lands on the hill of ancona the church of santa maria de nazareth also stood in ancona today only the bell tower remains it was built by the bishops in the early 14th century beside the cathedral of their city to honor all the miraculous translations that had occurred the cult of the angelic translations was very strong in this church from the hill of positora the holy house was carried by the angels to a thick forest near rekenati where the shepherd saw it appear from the clouds one morning in a blinding light [Music] in the area of the plain of loreto there worthy hosts of the holy house they began to fight violently with each other they both wanted to keep the offerings that were brought to the site for themselves so the holy house moved from their land and alighted on a public road that ran alongside their land in 1296 the house appeared in its present location on a hill which was not yet called laredo and which belonged to the nearby town of recanati it was then that a hermit called paulo de la salva had a supernatural revelation and informed the inhabitants of raqqanati that it was the holy house of nazareth brought by the celestial angels from telsato to this place like the people of tosato sent a commission of 16 men and not four like the people of tosato no less than 16 important people very well considered in the market made an expedition to both tessato and to nazareth to verify whether it was true that the holy house had been in tosato and whether it was true that it came from nazareth it is and they certified with official canonical documents they even took a solemn vow that they had verified the historical truth of this previous translation to tosato that the foundations remained in nazareth and that there was an inscription that said that the three walls had been there until 1291 and it then disappeared a copy of this deposition was made under oath and it remained in the archives but unfortunately the original document was lost because there was a fire in 1322 which destroyed all the documents from the previous decades however we have the subsequent reports copied from the original texts there is further important evidence of the miraculous arrival of the holy house in loreto how else could we explain the fact that at fourrio on the island of iskia very far away there is a beautiful basilica dating from the 14th century built in honor of the house of mary translated by the angels to loretto undoubtedly the tradition says that fishermen from forreal often sailed the energetic sea in search and so they wanted to build a church here too because obviously this amazing news caused quite a stir they wanted to build a chapel in honour of the madonna or rather in honor of the house of the madonna the fact that the origins of this church date from the 14th century perhaps from the start from the very early years of the 14th century is confirmed not only by tradition and they always relate to the birth the foundation of this church and we could say the development of the cult of the madonna of loreto in connection with the sanctuary of loretto there is a very important document the tablet that dominates the apps of the high altar of the basilica it shows the madonna standing on the flying house and the landscape at the feet of the madonna what we have seen so far are the principal confirmations of the miraculous translations of the holy house in recent times scholars have advanced a theory that speaks of transportation by the crusaders but there are some questions regarding this theory how is it possible for these walls to have been located in at least five different places where there are still important signs how did the crusaders transport the walls and rebuild them in just a few hours at night without being seen by the inhabitants of the various places in which the house rested [Music] and finally why place it on a public road perhaps the only one that led to the valley moreover why rebuild the house without building the foundations and even placing it partly over a ditch first of all no one would build on a public road apart from anything else it was forbidden by the council of reconati with a document dated 1289 that still exists if it had been built there it would have been demolished no three-world building could be built over a ditch on a public road because it wouldn't stand up and then all these hypothetical people who built these three walls on a public road why did they later build supporting arches to stop it falling down when they could have built it normally on public land and not on a public road the foundations and supports that would not have allowed it to collapse it would also seem that the land on which the house of loreto stands apart from being particularly subject to landslides was not prepared for building the land was not cleared before posing these precious walls there are also other elements such as a bush that was crushed by these walls as they landed on it part of the bush is underneath the wall and part of it grows outwards and many other objects were found under these walls without foundations professor nicolini's opinion is confirmed by the reports of two renowned architects sakoni at the end of the 19th century and manucci in 1923 these scholars declared after careful analysis that it was a miracle in itself that the three walls could stand as they were found in laredo [Music] if the walls had been dismantled in blocks transported and finally rebuilt on this site there should be evidence signs at least of mortar holding the stones together the chemical analyses carried out have shown first of all that the mortar comes from palestine and precisely from the area around nazareth it does not exist in italy and was never used in this country therefore it is impossible for the holy house to have been dismantled into individual stones and then rebuilt in five different places and in any case the accounts always speak of walls throughout the historical tradition both the eyewitnesses and the scholars they never mentioned stones carried here after the original walls in nazareth were dismantled professor nicolini also claims that the documents used to support the theory of human transportation do not offer real proof such as folio 181 of the cartellerium coliseum [Music] because this text says there are only a few words the holy stones carried from the house of our lady the virgin mother of god if the holy stones were carried away from the house they were stones and not the house so the house should still be in nazareth what's more there is no mention of the holy house of nazareth because mary lived in more than one house during her lifetime even the coins found underneath the house are not in professor nicolini's opinion certain proof of human transportation they date from the period between 1287 and 1308 they only attest to the fact that innumerable crowds came from europe and the middle east and that they left these coins as offerings or as ex-voter for grace received or to be received and therefore they are not proof of the theory that they were placed under the walls to date the moment when they were built many popes have considered the angelic translations true leaving innumerable documents papal bulls writings and inscriptions which it is difficult to ignore when the construction of the magnificent basilica of the sanctuary of loretto was completed ordered a huge inscription to be placed on the marble walls of the holy house with the thus solemnly approving the truth of these historical miraculous facts and then pope pio ix whose inter omnia declared the truth of the angelic translations and leon xiii who in an encyclical letter declared the miracle of the arrival of the holy house in loretto and we could mention many others last and we could say conclusive amongst all the papal approvals which succeeded each other for seven centuries comes that of benedict the 15th who on march 24 1920 declared that the madonna venerated in the holy house of loreto was the patron saint of aviators explicitly recognizing the historical truth of the miraculous flights of the holy house indeed in the basilica it is possible to admire the chapel dedicated to the mystery of the flight we must also remember the liturgical cult of december the 10th on december the 10th we do not celebrate as modern-day calendars show the blessed virgin of loreto but the miraculous translation of the holy house if we look at the calendars dating from 10 to 15 years ago they say translation of the holy house not blessed virgin of loreto as they incorrectly do today because this does not correspond to the cult established by the church then there are events that belong to the supernatural sphere the mystic revelations of the angelic translations of the holy house which were experienced and witnessed by many saints the most important of these revelations is that reported by santa catarina to bologna in the rosarium a text that she wrote in 1440 [Music] among the various things that santa catarina reports in the rosarium there is what is considered to be the oldest testimony of the translation of the holy house of loretto in which santa catarina speaks of the first joyous mystery when mentioning the enunciation she says that the house is the house where the annunciation took place and then she explains how the house was transported by a host of angels to loretta santa catarina writes in the rosarium finally this house consecrated first by your apostles who celebrated the divine mysteries with miracles there for the idolatry of those people it was transported to dalmatia by a host of angels then for the same and for other reasons they carried this worthy church to various places [Music] finally carried by saints and angels he was definitively placed in loretto and located in the province of italy and in the lands of the holy church another important testimony comes from santa catarina emmerich stigmatist known for her visions which led her to describe in detail facts and places that she had never known and dating from periods distant from her own lifetime [Music] one famous example was the discovery of the house of mary in ephesus after scholars followed her revelations the life of mary played a very important role in the visions of santa catarina the house in which mary was born is described very precisely she sees the house where mary lived with her mother anne transported by angels to loreto that is three angels carried the house at the front and three at the back and the front wall was carried by an angel surrounded by light these angels carried the house to loreto and there in loreto a new sanctuary was built where the mother of god is venerated there are many mysteries surrounding the house of mary apart from the way it came here to loretto the holy house has always been the focus of extraordinary facts and prodigious events the famous example is the story of the ironbound stone visible in a wall of the holy house it was returned by the portuguese bishop of coimbra who removed it in 1561 and was immediately struck down by serious and inexplicable infirmity his poor health disappeared suddenly when the stone was returned it was the will of god that the three walls of the holy house were never altered and this is a demonstration of how even from this let's say supernatural point of view it is impossible that men could ever have taken the stones of the holy house which were in nazareth carrying them on a ship and then rebuilding it because god did not allow that afterwards and he would not have allowed it before even today scholars do not agree how the holy walls actually arrived in laredo however thanks to the researchers it is said to be certain that they were certainly part of the earthly residence of the holy virgin the reliquary that stands here whether
