to the u.s. play countdown to kickoff from national titles to Heisman Trophy winners from legends of the game to the legendary game and on this perfect October night in South Bend these two legendary programs meet again as always so much on the line for both the Trojans they need a big play to turn their season free by the familiar surrounded to the leprechaun and the Sun girls by God and the victory marks for the 91st time it's it's a slice of [Music] Mike Tirico with the hall-of-famer Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie Hollywood glitz Midwest grit all on the same field Doug Notre Dame Michigan in two weeks this game tonight the meat of their season what's the state of the Irish I think we want to see if they can bring all the elements of their game together we've seen at times that they are as athletic as anyone in the country there is this physical as anyone in the country if it's a line that can dominate games can they bring it all together in one night for one game USC has a ton of talent as usual they've played three quarterbacks go back to the freshman Keaton slovis here tonight they have as good a wide receiver core as anyone in the country no doubt about it these guys they got three talented guys that can take it to the house and Notre Dame cannot double cover all of them so find the single coverage put it up even if he's covered these guys would go up and get the ball give them a chance both coaches tell their kids what this rivalry is star boots are all about they are very specific Brian Kelly told us all respect everyone else we plan regular basis this is the rivalry for Notre Dame football he coaches in this game for the 10th time as he in the Everest weeks [Applause] [Music] bounine for Brian Kelly season watch that Jill to be 13 here two weeks ago quarterback to Peruvian book says the win last at the Coliseum one of the sweetest against these guys 13 second game against the ranked team maybe Utah home and lost at Washington two weeks ago the Trojans from Southern California clay Helton his tenure as us en coche start here four years ago when he replaced Steve Sarkisian his quarterback Keeton slovis talented true freshman from Scottsdale Arizona back from injury tonight the weather is cool and perfect and so is the 70 Pepperdine dirty and USC next on NBC this has been the US Bank countdown to kickoff goodbye drug house financial the temperature is 50 here it's a lot nicer in LA windy throughout the night as we go to the sidelines and Catherine Catherine tech to clay Helton just a few moments ago and he said that this beautiful weather for college football he doesn't anticipate any issue from this team regarding the wind or the temperature he said the windows even died down considerably since his kickers were out here he said he told this freshman quarterback cadence loveth keep your composure tonight give what the defense gives you and trust your weapons talented USC whiteouts and he said the Irish are going to double up on senior wide receiver Michael Pittman and he told his group don't give up the big plays that is going to be the key to being the Trojans tonight Mike it's a green out [Applause] doors become short drive the quarterback down to hole Bayless Jones outstanding we ready to bring it back for us see coming off of my rested and ready to roll me to their pac-12 season ahead [Applause] college football's Cathedral is all set bang the first time seventy fourth consecutive year no today in Southern California Jones will let it go 25 yards around him this USC office we check the starting lineup three foot backs freaking wide receivers canvases those red star Michael hit me two years game cheek for this SC office up front left size and strength buckets of NFL scouts were here tonight they love Austin Jackson that left tackle keeping a close eye on him as he protects Lopez who comes back off the concussion that happened very early first series the last game he plays it's been about a month since he's played peaceful game [Applause] opening drive starts from the 25 live on a pain.i with the first runs or my elusive Carlo with attacking the game on first down for 17/2 started to tore a ligament over against Fresno State engine slovis Scottsdale Arizona tutored by Kurt Warner the Hall of Famer was his high school coach made plays for the first time in those 3 plus weeks nothing open here he takes off colleague Kareem brings him down but not after slovis picks up a first down at the 37 yard line boy both firstly second down snaps Notre Dame is very cautious defensively playing what we call it double cloud Safety's deep everybody's back that's why the first play was gashed on the run play they aren't playing past keep everything in front of it and that is what Washington did last time SC play they lost to the Huskies in Seattle here is slovis clean pocket fires and Hitchcock one foot down Amon Ross eight Brown engineer named territory at the 45 yard line a gain of 19 same Brown at the slot just run in the quarter route this is a beautiful throw nice outside release the ball over the top it was the only place that he had a chance to get the ball if he threw it flat it was going to be undercut by Elliott is that perfect throw up high and over the top no rust the guy wasn't playing in game action I'm safe around the brother wide receiver equanimous safe ground now with pistons head underneath Rose caught by the aforementioned safe route be gated 3 and it's a low he Gilman the captain the senior safety for the Irish on the tackle lookout deep the safeties are playing for Notre Dame they are back he's going to rotate up and come down but they are not going to give up the big play so that tells you there's space to run that's fascinating cuz what does USC do best throw the ball they've got three terrific receivers and their names always give them an invite to run fastenings watch how patient each side is as this light emerges here's a different look now the [Applause] on second and seven Jeremiah supermomo with the second ossified justa freak athlete rusev carrot low coming off the edge he plays nickel he plays linebacker he rushes the passer he's doing everything it's just overload blitz and bringing it they emptied out the backfield the running back was out an opening to help the jet my mistake lost [Applause] and slovis throws underneath safe ground with the catch Hamilton the safety hit him gets through another tackle it's not going to get near the first down right down the 43-yard line Jalen Elliot finally cleans it all up and is fourth down and about eight for clay Hilton's team and the punting unit will come up well if USC completes the ball over the top of this coverage that we've seen throughout the first drive it's gotta be more like a Hail Mary just throw it up and let somebody go jump because you are not gonna get deeper than the deepest he's heard a big man on campus that's the old man on campus Ben Griffiths the punter he turned 28 of the week of the Utah game the Aussie drops the nose down as he did in Australian rules football and he hits good bouncing up to touch backs the Irish would take over with a net of 23 first downs for USC now we book give the Irish offense taketh the feet stay out every single play they're talented they're hoping that you will lose focus for a play that's what they're hoping that's why they're talking action hoping that you'll get distracted do not get distracted from doing your jobs everybody clear ladies are focused locked in to your job one play at a time we know how to do this let's do it to our standard for four quarters and come back in here there is no other alternative but to come back in here and sing the fight song if I clear on that Brian Kelly's message to his team as he coaches in this rivalry for ten games now the longer tenure in Irish coaches Notre Dame will take over after the touchback at their own 20-yard line [Applause] in book the quarterback for the Irish who won the game at USC last year 13 and to this Notre Dame team is in his 15 starts start with two tight ends and exchange it over to the left this has been a good personnel group for Notre Dame it's an run inside of Tony Jones jr. will not go very far liyan yard or two in that good USC defensive front on the jeep starting lineups for the Irish with book it's gonna get right back to farm Armstrong back his collarbone in three tonight but Jones starts that collarbone injury received in Cole commit had he's been back in since Georgia good offensive line including Jeff Patterson from Mission Viejo high school 50 miles away from the USC campus hood takes a sideline [Applause] the market of the 48 is a gating of the 25 first down to the gutters chase play pool just gets an outside release and looks for the wall it's kind of a back shoulder watching strong hands go up for the ball and then after the fact bringing it down these it in the chest if a defender who walks away but I'll tell you he's got strong hands goes up and catches it in his hands and that's the key the 49 pressure coming it's picked up bunk taken off and book getting to the outside getting a first down Christian record teach them all the way down the field of 16 for dinner Plan C Pendergrass told us that they wanted to contain bookies more athletic than people think he's going to take up we got to keep them in the pocket right away he breaks loose for a big run on the first series the Irish moving it downfield couple first downs at the Southern California 34 doublet Islands Jones remains the backi runs to the right waits for the block from Tommy creamer gets the engine gets eight yards however a penalty flag is down on the edge we have packed 12 officials working the game here in South Bend today and the replay is handled by the ACC's replay crew so a split in that regard holding number 78 offense 10-yard penalty still first down Kramer was pulling he was holding it's a little bit out in space look like a good block initially out there on the corner that see how he grabbed it just this it's always when the defender starts to pull away Houston's trying to get away he's got a grip up on the shoulder once he starts to pull away you got to release that the grip is fine but once he pulls away release comes up from our official in the booth Terry McCauley he Chris Sims and Liam McHugh joining Kathryn Doug and I here's tonight on the inside running his Jones when we get a couple of yards back so he's second in longer fore-end book he's from 30 minutes outside of Sacramento El Dorado Hills California he grew up a UCLA fan because his older brother was a USC fence it was like okay fine you're gonna go SC I'll do you steal it he was not recruited by many of the schools in the pac-12 Washington State did offer him and he's ended up with a very good run at Notre Dame quick toss Jones quick to the edge got a good block from tremble the tight end will be third long against this USC defense that was 25 points he mistreats up front or in called christian rectory starting third aim us otay otay is the blitzing disrupter Houston is the unit's leading tackler all freshmen sophomores to the secondary the special one is Talon Elif Angga much 415 tonight let's get your eyes off the feel a little bit number 15 and number one will be cleansing Pender gases guys to cause some havoc against this no today in offense third and 13 at the SC 37 crushing three leaving a spy to keep book in the throws and it's incomplete tried to get the crossing and sliding Chris Fink at the 24 yard line Isaac Taylor Stewart massara the coverage and the Irish will send out the punting unit comfortable standing in the pocket there you might add a shot initially to come back it's a little tight there was a defender getting underneath it came back bruise progression just didn't deliver an accurate ball it's been a big topic if you are watching out in Los Angeles you haven't watched a lot of Notre Dame it's been how it relaxed and how patient Ian's book is in the pocket this year for door de filma sri Brian Kelly's lips when he came off the black stay in there make that throat Jay Bramblett the freshman punter kicks it and that too like SC's punt is through the end zone James teams had it once each team got two first downs she's got a touch back sports app to watch thousands of live sporting events screen for free with your NBCSN subscription for details visit NBC sports.com slash live the folks come here for the tour of the stadium they touch the play like a champion sign our aerial coverage tonight brought to you by Bright House Financial it is a bright house under the Harvest Moon in south death California takes over at its own 22nd Drive slowest to Steven car the speedy home run hitter out of this backfield and a gain of five as how smart polo and true whites make the tackle for third a again on a first down call Notre Dame has three defenders playing 20 yards off the ball deep across the field so why not run the ball first down the challenge is for USC to put a 15 play drive together and do you keep running it they've got the backs to do it I think I said car can hit you a big one safe ground underneath with the blocking first down on Monroe sink Brown in a 5 to the 32 yard line busy already on the Irish checker makes this defense versatile you can line up in the inside and be a true linebacker cover guy in a slot is at Nickelback he does it all [Applause] wonder slovis was going to be rusty for for for to start give zoo car turns the corner and to the secondary goes he's dragged down from behind at the 46 yard line by Jalen Elliott first down run of 14 for the impressive junior ninety-one okand Ichi is reading this trying to slow play it gets outflanked right away USC should just keep running the ball until Notre Dame puts seven eight men in the box we talked about their wide receivers they're talented they're willing blockers safe Browns block on the edge help gave car a little more room he does not eat a lot of old folks to make a house call halfway through the opening quarter Notre Dame three down linemen here bar is going to try the right side clay was strung out by Jameer Jones and osmar polo get the credit for the tackle as Irish defencing a 15-game curtsey in the country of the team starting line of Giuliano flora on fire this three-game homestand to the Irish loosened korma has been all over the place he's also going to be covering receivers in the stock very versatile a low heat Gilman will have a big factor in this game as well the Irish corners who would be certainly tested tonight loss of 2sc behind the chains second and 12 it's car into the backfield on the edge shia midfield withdrew white the junior from boca raton florida science business major impressive young man we spoke with yesterday made the nerd name tackle it forces third and six [Applause] now third gap is the opportunity that [Applause] technically five defensive backs of the Irish but with in the slot it's like 60 mins slow misfires incomplete and no flag as Troy fried junior was there he his hands are all over Tyler Vaughn's no flag fourth down here comes the punting unit well Falls is trying to get freeze just run on the outside route trying to run a hitch but pride can play underneath him because he has deep help you see hello Gilmer gettin it to the play over the top so he's gonna play it's two men what we call too deep safeties with man-to-man underneath so you play underneath the receiver and make them try to beat you over the top where you have helped that should have been a penalty been Griffis to kick it away see if you can keep the Irish inside their own 15 the bounce takes it to the end zone college football for the ball and it's not the man's once it crosses the front plane to the goal line touch back the Irish will take over at their own 20 as you see everything green this including the Word of Life Bureau which the Hesburgh library has better known for many of you touched down Jesus Irish take over at their own 20 in this scoreless game second drive Michael Young for the first half only gets to Greg Johnson the nickel or the tackle for su Doug can't emphasize enough the youth in this secondary for court has seen first and sophomores so how will they react to the different formations that chip long the Irish offensive coordinator throws out of here tonight double clutch because of the jump in the pass is incomplete again it was who fungo the tubes earlier causes so much disruption Chris you got to see that ground level how good 15 is for the Trojans yes USC you got a lot of good-looking athletes down here but that's one thing to watch out for tonight I know you said a number one number 15 if you see 15 out of that free safety position and by the line of scrimmage people at home he's Blitzen they love to bring him to cause him happy Hollan Oahu Fong go miss the Washington game said a couple of different injuries there's pressure again folks got a bail on it and we're treating just fires out of bounds but is it going to be in an interception nope he got into the sideline Isaac Taylor Stewart wouldn't get the flip down but the pressure of USC done forces Notre Dame into a three and out yeah miscommunication in the offensive line didn't slide out to it there was a three offensive Lanka slide out there they missed the Blitz coming from the left side from their left comes through clean now this is a standard movie in book Lexington he does that little fishhook move and spin out but USC is definitely and definitely out of bounds there but definitely trying to keep it at the pocket and contain and not more than the quarterback J Brantley kicks twin receivers back to for the Trojans Bramley kicking with the way that's fielded at the 40 yard line by Alvin Ross a brown who turned in a field for a return of 11 and the best field position of the night for either team coming up for USC Trojans take over at the Irish 49 no score is out there guy representing USC but from this state from Indianapolis Marcus step now the running back for SC drive starts right on the midfield stripe and he'd the slovis gives it to step with a big of a step nearly 20 yards for the redshirt freshman who once committed to her name Cathedral High School in na that was his school's nickname [Music] it's the big block the push a load Gilman passed the whole step has us explosion to him he's got a quickness it's low to the ground and for gain of 19 step is out shovel tamela pay on the other back the starting back in you games nine yards so they roll in the backs prints they're taking advantage of the irish drop in the secondary receiver screen did they want to get these guys space go ahead and play and let these run us see weapons get out there make some place slovis now it's over the sidelines of a song the Irish I'm going to do the sidelines at - the second and one [Applause] but did not get away was recovered by Drake London freshman according to the other day just flat-out porn at the wrong word but that was the first time the notre-dame actually went true man-to-man coverage from the safety middles and he had some shots on the outside maybe take a shot didn't take it try to pull it down and a six-man rush gets to the quarterback the ball did come out this was down at that point in London who's the hustle back fancy on the board that it was in fact [Applause] second effort for the first down for step he is physical his talent and his ability is forcing his way into the backfield and he boots the James this is the guy I want carrying the ball for me step has shown the ability to break tackles move forward slip and slide writes me a little bit of Danny Woodhead on the inside runs but he's got powerful lower body and legs he's only been coming into today you'd only been on the field for thirty nine plays 38 of them being run which would indicate pass protection may be an issue for them look at that he touches it passed the time - first down as good as any back in the FBS thus far this year it's a gift to step to the left this time he's strung out that is not his strength compared to seven car we saw earlier as marble waffle fries minutes left in this quick-moving non-scoring opening quarter yeah obviously that's not his game going laterally he wants the north/south cuts he wants the inside game I'm sure he could bounce it out there but stringing it out that's not his thing they're throwing up the tight-end comes out four wide receivers with the one back here USC [Applause] play man Pittman yet tonight 22 Irish flow pressure they bring six slow distorted on the raw st. Brown with Jaylin Eliot's the senior Irish safety in coverage well the Safety's going over top the other way so Eliot has to jump inside he does try to stay inside but gets smoked on the move by st. Brown dunk of these hands turning on rid of the ball [Applause] 1313 they chose five getting away flipping over the middle you can put the Irish watch him with pressure tougher on the back end we should have a 39 yard field goal attempts coming up 4s suit well third downs Notre Dame is playing man-to-man underneath and two high safeties for any help over the top you're not going to beat him up the field you got to beat him across the field when they're in this coverage and a quarterback run that everyone has their back turned quarterback runs are great in these situations with this coverage if you can get loose 40 to 40 here chase McGrath number 40 from 40 yards out [Applause] first point to the game the USC taking advantage of the three and out by the Irish to good punt return a short field NSC on top no they football is brought to you by Geico 15 minutes could save you 15% on car insurance by today's military learn about opportunities at today's military comm by the all-new 2020 Lincoln aviator and bud bright house financial build or what's ahead hashtag nd roll call send us your pictures of your young or old person friendly [Applause] see your face on or NBC broadcast the remainder of the way here in south bet three-game homestand will be Irish of course USC beat Louisville in the opener v New Mexico handling lost at 40 by six the Virginia bowling green mango two men are readily Michigan two weeks from lightweight tonight of course for Notre Dame in the national perspective they can't afford a lawsuit they want to be a returned participate in the college football playoff but Georgia's lost to South Carolina hugely negatively impacting Notre Dame's hopes not even at halftime there's a bunch of ball still deployed Michael young back deep Stenhouse kickin young from the tip young slips and falls just trying to put that right foot in the ground and cut it forward to the 25 there's also a penalty flag down back right about with that hole opened up might be a long field again for Ian's book in the armor holding number two receiving team ten-yard penalty from the spot of the foul for sale beyond Jordan Jim Marquis [Applause] there you go the hand wrapped around the back there's no doubt about that I saw that from up here actually and there was actually a crease if he see if he doesn't slip he was going to get another 10 to 15 yards at all would have been coming back at him Brian Kelly's team three drives first one started at their own 20 some of the second one this one starts at their own 13 to tight ends Tony Jones jr. the fake hook throws to Tommy tremble dropped by the sophomore from the Johns Creek Georgia I said I say a Pullum out there on coverage those are the types of frozen ship Walt likes to give Ian book early in the game get up on the boobs a little bit easy completion to either your tight end in the flat or misdirection and it hasn't worked out that way so far it's been more drop back passing today in their early part of the game some first downs in the first drop none on the second good run up the middle for Tony Jones jr. you'll see if Notre Dame is able to run the ball on USC USC worst out in the defensive front to get to the 23 yard line it looks like it's touching at the headlines and saying needs to change and first down they're stopping for a conversation the drive starts at the 13 they put it right on the front of the 13 yard line so if it gets to the 23 they know move the chains got a first down they say they can't determine it so it looks of their it's just a couple of chain length short they'll bring out the chain game this doesn't happen too often anymore nope because of what you just said to put the ball online being able to eye it up quickly keep the game moving let's quickly keeping the game movie the game moved at an incredibly fast pace you see it shift short they're incredibly fast paced last week the bowling-green game congratulations to Bowling Green and Scott Leffler they got cleaned out here by Notre Dame 52 nothing new Brian Kelly's team and it could have been a lot worse they were four touchdown underdogs today and one against Toledo 20 to 7 congratulations that Bowling Green staff that is one of the big upsets in the desert of this college football season third and one for book turning Givens Jones into first down for Jones out to the 25 maybe 26 yard love does they get you far Armstrong back at some point tonight we haven't seen him yet they only really had him for the first series against Louisville but that won't need a full complement of running backs from this often he's versatile back to catch a lot of the backfield as well as solid and pass protection does a little of everything but he has a slight groin pull as well and you never know when those are healthy Armstrong has played one play my apologies to aside to Chris fake big hit stayed on his feet for the moment but Elijah Griffin was all over back it'll be a completion that'll be a loss of yardage Elijah Griffin just be an instinctive reading the receiver right away it just puts footing around and go didn't even back up at all not even a drop step now the athleticism in the secondary is there it's just young and inexperienced but as far as athletes they're talented no issues so far this to Tainan look from the Irish now quick the past incomplete trying to get it to the other tight end tremble but again John Houston jr. the captain the one senior in that back seven for USC forces third and long Griffin times up the Blitz but he still gets outflanked on the naked bootleg pull the outside and then Houston gets the hand in there to knock down the pass a little bit behind the receiver tremble nice reaction by Houston to get out there it really he was fooled initially it was a couple steps behind closed showing everybody up and then USC is not afraid to bring the house but it's third down they'll probably bail yeah bail out of this place um zone on third long man rush and a whistle stopping it it'll back up number 12 offense five-yard penalty down you get down in the red zone and they show that look they're coming when Kelly was the only beside church official on his sideline about the play clock and running down Bramley be looking at his list of the names deficiencies a common one for coaches to do so it's third and 16 now for book looking for a design run pulls it down and throws it to fake a lot of room to get he'll only get to the 31 yard line Isaac Taylor Stewart on the tackle and it's 5 yards short of the first down so the Irish will punch him here at the end of the quarter the wind is southerly from right to left which Hitler tame gets this punt off with with the wind before the quarter comes to an end entertain took a timeout but is exactly why that took a timeout to get the punt off with the wind recharge time in this first quarter Chris how much of the factory swing they're on the field it's significant guys I really think that's a big reason you know slovis the quarterback for USC missed that wide open post down the middle it's coming in behind Notre Dame right now I understand it's gonna affect the passing game as they can this game continues if the south end is where that video screen is watch tonight it's coming from right to left and she push me down yeah oh it's why we walked the field that I could not determine what the rest the majority the wind filling was coming across the field to me but then I got down the one end zone where they're punting from Werner name is punting from and it actually thought there was a little weight in my back then I walked down the other end it felt the same way so it kinda deadens by the goal line and was swirling I I really could not get a grip on how the wind was blowing three years ago the campus crossroads project and didn't they vote the Duncans Student Center on the near side the corporate family Hall on the far side and it is turned the wind pattern to a squirrel Bramblett will get rid of it and good advantage with the wind it's going to the left side out of the 21 yard line by Vons and it was a worthy timeout for the Irish in terms of field position SC is going to take over at the 20 mile in the second quarter begins after 1 USC 3 nur Dame nothing we're back in our date stadium after these messages from your local station football on NBC presented by great house financial aerial coverage is brought to you by brain house financial but glistening golden dome part of the background of the setting for the 91st renewal of college football's greatest intersectional rival Notre Dame Southern California Trojans lead three nothing second quarter begins Mike Tirico tofutti Chris Sims Catherine's happen Terry McCauley and Liam the qaul with you here in South Bend first down run for the viola pay I I know he Gilman with the tackle the gain is through Keegan slovis true freshman Desert Mountain High School didn't start as a freshman sophomore his offensive coordinator there Kurt Warner Hall of Famer Super Bowl champ and he has tutored a very good quarterback who was able to come right in with JT Danny's got hurt in game and play well for SC gets it to Michael Pittman first catch for the best receiver on this Trojan team he's got a first down the 40 yard line Doug what jumps out one slovis for you just technically sound spins the ball and comes off his head watching a warm-up everything was a tight spiral but talking to Kurt Warner he reads coverage even from his high school days Kurt taught him to read coverage read defenders throw the ball the open spaces and he has a knack to the timing so he's he's been a tutored quarterback he's not a five-star recruit at three star wasn't highly recruited Alipay I got a pop to the cutback inside a loose ookura MOA the game will come out just past the 43 yard line befooled credit to clay Helton the USC head coach we talked to him last night at the team hotel he said no we feel pretty good about how we assess protects and Arnold wasn't a five-star but we'll go he did we're very confident and when we saw slovis we really liked everything we saw he's come right in and he's playing at a high level I love the whole story because he's a three-star guy going there with all these highly touted guy he did face but all his poise his confidence he took the Troy's mature young kid you press the heck out of us in the meeting not face at all very their name again three down the defensive liner then it's not a normal look for the Irish they've switched it up here tonight a bit second and seven toss is complete oz marble all with tackle on I'm on Ross a brown we are trying the first down to third that come down here now this is the type offense right now Notre Dame is forcing USC to play their controlled pass and game three-man rush hold on little ball find the open windows and stick it in there for short games and a go quick third down on the first at Stephen Carr runs it to the 46 yard line so her name is playing three down SC goes quick doesn't let the Irish get extra defensive front personnel in there and a change who she minutes into the second quarter complete for something put 15 play drives together 12 to 15 play drives get first down after first down and see if they can go the length of the field and bringing pressure it's a runs or card he runs right into the arms of true whites who was waiting Bernard [Music] if he gets any space short yardage plays just a quick step through a whole big nut block guy miss he's elusive second eleven again three down from the aerosol for about seventy two man was here deflected in the air an incomplete as fascinating stuff Chris that Clark please dialing up three different defensive looks we seen thus far this year [Applause] one thing that can feed us peanuts and that is missing his wide receiver court for USA chin high safeties again 7-eleven Irish spring for slow this is pursued by a quorum and is tackled by Gillman at the 42-yard line that'll be six yards shy of the first down and USC will kick it away this has been the third down coverage for Notre Dame what they like to do they're going to high safeties to avoid any deep everything it's banned a man underneath but what happens is when Elaine opens up if he takes off right away it doesn't hesitate he is off and running everyone's back will be turned in that coverage and Griffiths kicking with the wind Chris picked back deep gonna hang it high try to get it over the sideline and he got it to bounce correctly this time it'll be down at the three 39 yards it's all net to the long field for the Irish the field is tilted in USC's favor the scoreboard did their favors on fans to schools 14 over a one husband that was forfeited by Reggie Bush that's the chronological order with Matt Winer 2004 where's the stretch three in four years Carson Palmer at o2 Leinart no four and Reggie Bush in 2005 two of the chili the legendary programs of the history of the sport field positions been bad bad now worst of the night for the Irish starting at their own three well gamba give it'll be two yards for Tony Jones GJ to faileth on the tackle to fail a low - excuse me those two guys inside sophomores big difference makers on that USC front tough to run off and to make four yards come out of your own end zone between the guards is a pretty good run for Notre Dame against that front two below choose number 51 second and seven we're treating books Mazzone end zone Jones couldn't hang on if he did he wouldn't go too far Isaac Taylor Stewart was waiting it's third down coming up the Irish offense cannot find a rhythm right now fifteen hoof on go on the line of scrimmage he's coming if he's up there he is come and they were trying to get a little tricky screen to make it look like was going inside they went outside too much pressure too quickly they missed him a couple of weeks ago in that was like a security blanket for the secondary run fit that was missed let's 189 yard touchdowns a backbreaker scored by the Huskies against the Trojans in Seattle third and seven three to the right one to the left book going left it's 15 yard line fine chase clay close just about to say they haven't thrown in his way so they put him on the one receiver side and he moves to James finally get an individual route against Chris steel and it's a little hook Brett great cats ball out away from his body and it's like I said with him his hands and then goes quick UFC confused Tony Jones bruising rock of a dozen where's that Irish before Chris steel makes the tackle Notre Dame goes quickly USC is not even lined up there to subbing it out looking at the sidelines when the ball is snapped [Applause] I ran so many players off they might have ended up with 10 on the field on that water I think the exchange may have been uneven our main conversation between the referee of the umpire and shipped long wants to know what's going on the illegal substitution tour players on the female defense they'll be declined they may have ended up with 10 but the guys weren't off the field yet there were guys all over the place running in and out what the USC does not do is sup much up front branded pili 91 is in for UC 89 78 99 a lot we pilote you just came out number 51 replaced by 91 [Applause] Stewart finally stopped this is hell Notre Dame has gotten outside twice 99 Jackson is breaking down hard it's a quick pitch out to the outside a broken tap when he hits a crease they give him 43 Markham down at the 30 Irish jump the ball and go quick and on first down it is book firing Whiteside Creighton Lindsey with the catch he'll get 8 to 22 yard line the sophomore track star from Argand on the ground his fourth catch of the year the broken tackle is moving on down and see coalbed had a little fistful of Jersey there during the run was not called jumpier Smith is the back the sophomore from North Carolina for Notre Dame shy of the 10 yard line first in Indy a drive that started at their own three whose quick for the pass that's where he and book is at his best did a great job and throwing it over Jackson who's dropping see notre-dame in the redzone has been as good as anyone's late LSU and Iowa the other teams this year coming into this week perfect in the red zone gonna mark it right on the ten which means first and goal and book swings it out to Smith cannot hang on incomplete for Smith who only has one reception on the year and Jones needed a break after the long run comes right back in the diversity of the Backson Notre Dame brings in for different reasons Tony Jones is the one really versatile guy that knew everything well the other backs are kind of situation Lindsay has remained in the game he and Fink at the bottom of the screen for he receipt was this side with Claypool come in that way [Applause] johnny huston tries to step up and not commit off his route keeps his balance and outwards to the dude initially was going to be a pic play the pic didn't have to happen because he came clean we talked about how a little fungus such a good safety could bake the tackle on a terrific tight end polka met since he came back from the broken collarbone against Georgia he has been a difference maker his third touchdown in four Gators Houston was trying to buy some time for who fungo you know by knocking their tight end off the route [Applause] quite a drive the 43 yard run by Jones the completion to Claypool when Notre Dame had nothing going on Jonathon door Charlotte North Carolina out of the hold of the punter Jay Bramblett Notre Dame takes the lead they're outstanding today don't come into the end zone lychees Irish on top first time tonight pushy a ton of alums all of the Steelers and the Chargers where both of these schools watching flow of interest as they get set to appear in prime times number one show the last eight years Sunday Night Football or kick toss can bring that out valus Jones he's got the speed he's got the talent does he have the blocking no it doesn't couldn't get out to the edge tackled by chase Claypool who is starting wide receiver at the 25 window at this wide receiver Michael Pittman well they're defending them they're keeping on the one thing that can kill you is this guy making a big play so here's man coverage for the playing from them safety is always rolling over the top and helping out this he definitely has safety hump is he staying underneath Pittman and then when he is finally 101 he's bailing and even when he's bailing off like that there's a safety over the top hedging in his side deep in the middle of field and getting to his side to help out he will be irrelevant if they keep him outside Hall game long with all these two safety looks and you're referring to Doug they got to move on to the slot but too deep man under middle of the field is the weakness a bunch of Graham Harrell II offensive coordinator makes a change he runs with the Indianapolis native Marquis step punishing powerful ones still going step carrying half a sentence been with him good gracious out to the 45 that's 19 and that's really good every time touches the ball it's a version of this run and this is all of it together I mean it's well block he breaks the line of scrimmage I mean that's a lo-- he Gilman who's a heck of a tackler and a physical guy four guys five got his legs are driving gets a little help from his buddies don't quit talk to him his family life he was thick he's big back here tonight he's a receiver here as they throw the other side and Pittman and kalisch over there near midfield Catherine you got more a more cage the running back yeah marquise where's number 30 in honor of his friend a young boy named Brody Stephens whose favorite number was 30 Brody lost his battle to cancel in cancer in 2017 at 8 years old step told me every time I pull off the pads and sit down and think about what got me here I just think about Brody I think about his smile and it really motivates me Mike there's such a connection that they made many of the folks in the Indianapolis area with healing Brody who lost his life Pittman hit hard right at that 45 yard line which is close to a first down and they will move the chains SC responds very nicely on this Drive trying to find a way to get the ball get in there wide receiver screens but as Chris Sims says motion up now for they don't do a lot of that they don't do a lot of motion stack things that can give a defense problem on the inside the middle of the field is the weakness in especially the third down coverages that Notre Dame is running you've got to move around it's a little more difficult to double them this game last year at the Coliseum they gave clay Hilton the USC head coach the visual of - spread my receiver's get the ball in their hands and then made the move to this area sprint offense late play claw blitz coming slope is going up top then he goes up and gets it on Troy's ride junior rule the catch tried says no the officials talk about it they say no catch incomplete best defender Bailey but what was a double move by Pitman wasn't fooled by the move at all he settles his feet a little bit but not fooled by the moon stays with it right there and Pittman goes up and makes the catch if you need him want he will go up to get the ball terry mcauliffe here in the booth no catch good call right Terry absolutely he loses control as he hits the ground in complete mass so that if their Pitman was looking for the replay on the video board he never got it it's what happens when your own room [Applause] second intern far with the run one tackle not the second for three yards to 42 so all this offensive talent the three receivers all these backs to talk about brand Haros trying to manage all who might know the names quarterback days at Texas Tech engineered that big win over Texas and there's a Super Bowl ring from that time as well offensive coordinator North Texas the last few years put the time before back like we did this air raid systems he has learned it that way this one's incomplete Ross a brown didn't catch it clean first time around brings up fourth dem this is pressure coming from Notre Dame and he's just getting rid of it now it's probably his own tree type though it's a wide receiver screen definitely just a bad ball caused by the pressure it was definitely forward no doubt about that it was an incomplete pass and not a phone has sped up the quarterback slovis they have done a good job enforcing inaccurate throws from the second most accurate quarterback to this point in FBS Griffiths pinned the Irish at the three last time and USC did not control it they got a little cute with it again it's where the ball is so that guy standing on the goal line was okay and he was trying to play almost volleyball keep it on the other side alive it broke the plane there so it's a touchback irish could take over at the 20 [Music] there is pressure on clay Helton who's been around coaching forever his dad Kim was a head coach at Houston Clay's been in the business played his college ball and he knows that the future is in some flux because his new boss the president of USC dr. Carol folt he was the president at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill she has taken over Lynn Swann has resigned as the athletic director first down for Tony Jones jr. gets a dozen and even more from the Irish down to the 32 yard line and Doug when we spoke to clay helped me last night long time so I understand the uncertainty that I'm sitting with right now the changeover and offensive coordinators throughout those years the change is at the top he's done a tremendous job of keeping this team focused and playing good football and I love talking to clay Helton when we see him and I think he's doing a heck of a job keeping the team 31 hook throws cameto at the touchdown earlier has 14 there in the first down over the sidelines of the 45 yard line and injured USC player is down Isaac Taylor Stewart's they're starting corner he's injured over by the Notre Dame sideline and the athletic training staff for USC will come over to check on him you missed the Utah game with a concussion was in concussion protocol that time he was being blocked by Javon McKinley looked like his leg caught awkwardly walked over and they popped up attempt to examine and Catherine's happened over there watching tells us that his left lower leg he updated on Taylor's Stuart redshirt freshman in his stead Chris steel another freshman comes in here started a couple of games so far Steele Taylor Stewart that Elijah Griffin Troughton fans know it's been a rotation of those three corners - Steele has seen a lot of playing time but Chris Sims a lot of youth out there are you seeing any impact from what Notre Dame is doing to them the last couple of drugs I think that's why we've seen the up-tempo it tests the communication of some of these young guys in the secondary and then we talked about their lack of depth the last few days and I think that's what Notre Dame is trying to focus on right now Irish scoring their last Drive leading 7 to 3 if you're just joining us SC got a 40-yard field goal in the opening quarter this is first and ten and the run with Jones will go for four yards getting close to midfield for Tony Jones Turner drink Jackson's over there on the stop Wow that freshmen pop as we watch SC's first five games getting ready for this one comes off the edge keeps busy perfect true freshman he pushes tackles back in the quarterbacks lap plants and Pendergast the defensive coordinator cities like Cameron Jordan we coached NFL star there's a little flip tool NC try to use his speed up [Applause] this direction he said the organ track startled anyway little stutter step to make sure gets around the edge he ran the sixth fastest 200 meters in the state of Oregon 21 and 3/10 seconds and the former walk-on turn captain Chris fake down there blocking and leading the way for lensing blitz the home run and Notre Dame's speed on the edge has flipped this game Jonathon doors extra points high discipline the secondary in the front and watching the ball too much the backfield that's what happened Thursday 14 USC 3 minute to Oregon he changed his family Taggart left the Agena took the Florida State job not long after his hiddens with the end some folks weren't happy with his shades they came to their game rooms time [Applause] 4:40 when they were doing NFL scout day this past April it's legit speed the track translating to the football field Lindsay with the touchdown all the suttas flip this game up 11 and Jones will let it go and it is a touch back so often talk about the speed of us see the speed of Georgia which is help flip this game we talk about a little bit in the open about they are as athletic as anyone in the country they have speed guys they have physical guys on the defensive that's the first time we've seen him in the open field and I mean that's the jet speed you put a little stutter step on the defensive end that everyone has got a nice block for fake downfield but the athleticism the Claypool and wide receiver I've been commended tight end position those guys they're second to none at their positions in the country stoppage here for a moment field judge going back to talk to clay Helton play cloudspinner reset [Applause] the c-band which is tradition holds made the trip Georgia marching band will play at halftime first down passes hop and then complete right now the band the song girls all the folks watching back in Southern California are frustrated because USC had control of this game Doug feel like they were kid in Notre Dame back why is this thing flips a sudden they were I think they speak depth of at Notre Dame once you've got a little rhythm going on that one drive and they got it rolling in in Chippewa play column-wise has a chance to make some things up and hits the [Applause] again their name three down linemen have not seen that this year good wrinkles so far Malafaia reverses field there's three down linemen you get the runs we get to tackling behind it a smart bowl olivet a cola games without father you know slovis missed his first down throw that gets you added down a distance and allows that zone coverage stuff the three-man rush to work and get you the third down and that's a Forte for him rhythm passing he's very good the sideline diagnosis what they see from above on the headset to the sideline slowest adjustment of the back down those slowness so even though it's man-to-man coverage right you got Michael Pittman 101 all right watch them slip Tory bride boom gone but you know what the safeties finger in that side of the field he can't go that way safety deep middle so deep he can get to that if he has to slowest looks right nothing is there he he gets sacked Collin Kareem and he bring pressure off the edges he into little Quora as well as any - OH in the FBS come up on that money down it's a punt Todd full of Ben Griffiths mr. Fink just gonna let it go out of bounds you'll see where the ball gets marked as USC will sooner name take over right around the 44-yard luck PFF inside the numbers presented by Amazon Web Services I was talking with the pressure those two guys bring off the edge wasn't there those first three games right but after the Georgia game especially the second half of Virginians taken off they've combined for 15 and a half pressure into the last two games coming into tonight and it puts those guys in the last two games as good as any other duo but one to the FBS they lost daelin Hayes to a shoulder injury yet still these two guys on the edge had been difference makers and game changers on third and long absolutely took over the Virginia game in the second half 3 SEC's for a car in that game 8 is a team and I think the confidence level went to another level SC's defense needs a play here from the 44 book [Applause] first steel came in for Isaac Taylor Stewart at the corner step for step use the proper hand not to get called for pass interference terrific plug just the poster out one-on-one and commend ate up the safety and took him out of place so they are one-on-one steel that outside technique so it should be there he closes and makes a great play on the ball little wrap on the left art yep but it was right timing was very good the timing of the left hand with the right hand touching the ball he's a fraction before he touch the ball but let that go nice play fans don't agree irate Terry McCauley does agree he worked three Super Bowls as the referee so I'll side with both of you 44 explodes in the secondary dump truck tat the 43 but a big gain on first and flames second down at full credit to this third aim offensive line now well this is Patterson making the key block once everything flows he gets the block ago to create a north-south layin very few teams are ever able to gas USC up the middle Tony Jones jr. over 100 yards already bullied by that 43-yarder a couple of drives ago 11 carries 110 yards he's out for the moment book protected now flushed to Michael Young on the sideline minimal gain of two in front of Elijah Griffin with 224 left they're dead cross midfield their plus 40 shot plays they went play-action they were hoping for something deep deep post wasn't there too deep cross wasn't there the in book checks it down and gets a completion chip long he's got some place and if he gets a rhythm going and can move the ball a little bit I say he hands the book five lay up big plays again two receivers left two to the right now think coming that way Chris Fink's can take the hand of him he's gonna get the edge with commit and smooth to block but he couldn't get to them he was knocked down by Greg Johnson the Nichols said enough of this we need to flip the game a little bit and the kids from Hopkins High School in Los Angeles made the tackle the shortcoming how about this invite Johnson I mean think as a pupper Turner right boom and his heads up he doesn't lower his head on this hit it's a high hit but his head is up a forearm to the chest third and one has seeped crowd in the line and that play looked a bit messed up it was a false start on the Irish they were not in sync there and that's gonna take it to 36 number 74 offense vigor crinoline Eichenberg who is penalize a couple of times especially in that Georgia game that's set Notre Dame back now the Irish got to think about what they're going to do here are they in four down territory you know analytics is a big part of football now and Brian Kelly and his staff like so many of the elite teams in college football all over the analytics so they know beforehand when they get in a drive give it a score situation if they're gonna go for it says chip long have two downs here or just one third and six and it's a run it's [Applause] when you plan to a four down territory then you can run a play like that exactly that's a play call thinking four downs watch the kick out a lot coming across a little counter action when it's third and six if you know you're going for it on fourth you kick brought the ball and get stuffed or cut it halfway and create an easy fourth down situation your name's going to take one of its two remaining timeouts here with 71 seconds for 28 yard-line coming up we'll have the State Farm halftime report Liam Q's here we'll be joined by the very busy Kris Simpson Tim Brown family nice we're gonna join the guys on the set given his thoughts on the first half terrific off the field book with a player has been one of the better players on this birthday team this year Milan hung by La Russa and the story of the game between the hedges and Athens as Georgia Lawson rare that you play double overtime they don't score the dogs did see at halftime the Irish they saw that score and that hurt their names long-term hopes of getting back in the college football playoffs here's Liam with no gloves slowed Syracuse Kris Simpson not just gloves Chris my softness Chris Chris is the Texas boy New York now but he's up he's pictures yours I know but he plated Texas so he saw see if Lima dresses that [Applause] one timeout 71 seconds left from the Irish trying to score it a third straight drive in his book pulled the trigger for you quick and bring it in he was over there battling with Elijah Griffin in the corner bring up second down this is an important stretch obviously for USC with Notre Dame driving but the Irish get the ball first to start the second half so if you score do it late and USC can't get it all of a sudden you can be looking at that back-to-back score situation here so Brian Kelly's team has a chance to really deliver a significant blow what you'd like to refer to as the full the full Belichick death score halftime score second and 10 book stepping up maneuver to walk away from a sack you'll get two yards to the 26 yard line and one timeout 56 seconds on the turnin clock and they're gonna let this one play out see if play helped in use is one of his three try to get the ball back they are letting it run so that's that's I am towards playing for field goal Notre Dame it does have a timeout and if you're held in you say okay maybe they want to call timeout get some time to get the ball back from me but you don't want to give her a name some extra time in case they picked up the first down here 30 seconds left and book collapsing pocket in trouble running out of field goal range got away from the sack he's just going to go forwards to trillion takes the hit on the sidewalk the lady out of battle I'm John Huston jr. and the loss of to bring up fourth down I didn't like the scramble part giving up the huts ground betting I think he stayed inbounds picks his head inbounds juice it hits him right on the sidelines but what he did do once he got to the perimeter who's kept his eyes downfield you saw him hesitate during the running part of it he was looking for a touchdown Terry good no-call I think so his footsteps on the line just before the defender hits him no foul 45 yards Jonathan door field goal turning in and hooked it right through the middle and gets three points at Jonathon door comes through longest kick of his brief surname career and is the biggest pressure kick to this point and the Irish have scored on three consecutive drives and lead 17 dub one of the headlines from Thomas and 18th all given up three points last six quarters wanted in defensive player for the safety the freshman a total change of what they're doing Kyle Hamilton flanked safety down low run fill in a position that he could rotate back and take middle field from there but tonight I mean that's 27 yards deep on the snap of the ball so that he can get to the outside throws when they're playing man-to-man coverage on the outside he needs to be that deep that helped on the throws down the boundary but all the other times there's two safeties so one ording side of the field they don't have to be quite as deep but they are ridiculously and the uniqueness of Hamilton the true freshman six-foot four from the marish school down there near Atlanta he's got the range in the size that if he is 27 yards back he can almost get to either sideline and break up the pass exactly and he can't from that depth he can get the either side and he's eyeing the quarterbacks eyes he's going with his first read [Applause] you see that three different times this year where they change things completely up to defend the teeth the teeth reacts a couple of times that go back to standard stuff but a total chain Vons can take it deep so they're trying to keep it out of his hands and kick it short Cana xx Steven Caro has great speed in his own rights tried to get to the edge and comment' will tackle him over at the 40-yard line interesting the last two tackles on special teams and kickoffs were by chase Claypool and Cole comment' your best pass catches and Notre Dame has been all over it with special teams [Applause] there is by 14 8 seconds left three timeouts for SCS and is just going to hand it off and they were waiting for Marquis step is going to bring the first half to eight clothes us he could slow the opening quarter Oh 17 of a second we'll get the ball to start the third Steve from Hampton [Music] [Applause] edge robberies are bragging rights bring it down rivalries are what make a Fighting Irish and Trojans game so damn good [Applause] [Music] USC Notre Dame Prime and good time ice-t setting the stage for the second half here under the golden dome in south fest Notre Dame seventeen Southern California 3 our first half stats are brought to you by fan really took over that second quarter yards clean game no turnovers four times possession for SC back to what happened right before the break after the cruising first half run by Marquis step name tackles there easy drew bite missed the pile but then the conversation began and it got heated very very quickly we get to fail a the defensive lineman for USC was out there causing the most trouble each players been assessed a penalty which means another in sports like conduct on anyone will get to be ejected to the sidelines now in Katherine chap ya Mike that's right guy spoke to the referees and they told me the same thing I spoke to both head coaches clay Helton coming out of the locker room and he said he just told his team to settle down he said explosive plays are dictating this game right now we are playing clean football but we're not finishing our drives he thought Keaton slovis is taking what the defense is giving him and not forcing things he was happy with his quarterbacks play as for Brian Kelly he said in that first quarter USC was bringing a different blitz package multiple times so he told him book to settle in he thought his team did a much better job adjusting in the second quarter Mike great stuff Katherine thank you open 10 of 19 in that first half if you've been watching college football all day that's exactly what happened in the pregame in Texas Oklahoma the Red River I guess opponents showdown now the bottom line of that was it just puts everybody on notice it was so hard to assist here's the referee now talking okay so they made that announcement so everyone heard it it was not as clearly made anybody who gets a second will be automatically dejected so Michael mother shed makes that announcement so everybody knows the stakes at hand and the second half set to begin take it away for us see Michael Young is the deep man for Notre Dame and from the goal line his return [Applause] he he got so excited that he had the chance to take it all the way he forgot the most important piece of mail seems like he jumped back on it Saturday ball to 36 well brand new footballs can be slick but I saw the e-book picking out game balls out of the bag now do they use kicking balls in college football like they did oh so they usually regular balls that have been dropped down been used so that's no excuse Wow because the way that thing broke open after the first tackle he had no one in front of him could have been caught by behind it from an angle but I mentioned books numbers 10 of 19 folly settled down as Catherine mentioned from Brian Kelly's conversation at the end of the half the run game was really the story in the first half for Notre Dame there's the Tony Jones jr. run to start it gain of about five I think he book got into a rhythm there were a couple bits as they weren't ready for free rushes no negative plays out of it though and then the crucial play was a 37 back up in his own head which was the beginning of the touchdown drive and they went to Lane to the field up the tempo and he started completing the rhythm passes the quick rhythm and got him a few first downs and out of their own end from the 40 it is jonesin out 45 yard line mean yard shy of the first down third and one when coming up into a blow to on the tackle for USC the Trojans three into they get back into league play the rest of the way they had control of this game through the first quarter but then those three drives for Notre Dame the difference bookkeeping on the end got away from Houston they got the first down good job by Ian book on the zone read to keep it get the edge and no names got the edge on USC three times hungry there in bringing pressure off the edge and then Houston is in place to make the boot up cutting it Ian book is more athletic than people think little stutter step and around the corner for a positive game when us he had a mountain man Irish over 200 yards on the ground show the pass run it inside Jones off the first man not the second got other Christian rector tackle and is no gain for the Irish second down coming up for steal felt that delivery by the bruising 224 pounds Jones ready a little short-handed at the corner position now as well as the young guys look with time Chris fake at the 35 yard line first down great patience to sit and wait they're gonna move fast but it's going to be an N round he lets the coverage underneath clear set in the pocket stand firm and deliver strike gain of 18 old lines playing terrific book looking now firing back towards the right side threw it over the head of Lindsey and out of bounds with nothing there again he's had some pressure in his face has had some free brushers he's had a play like that where nothing is there he hasn't made a mistake two interceptions all year long he's done a great job protecting the football is that offensive line that own that that deep in route gave him great protection he was able to hang on that ball for three and a half seconds am Eichenberg there the last picture you saw with Aaron Banks gerrant Patterson Tommy Cramer Robert Haynes had played every significant snap of the season together book decisive and quick but out of the hands of Lindsay who had the rushing touchdown earlier this week down early this second half recorded for USC big department thirty ten it's to make a big play whether it's creating a turnover this obviously is a scoring position it could be four down territory probably a 52-yard 51 52 yard field goal from here USC bring some pressure try to force the issue they're nosing they're coming both retreats tried to set up the screen was nothing they're trying to get to Jeff our Armstrong who was in but USC with a good defensive call by Clancy Pendergast and get played by Caleb Tremblay to force fourth down hunter a close number 31 actually grabs the back and sees it happen as he pulls out finds Jones and he's right on his back and again book good decision to throw the ball way avoid the negative play so you talked about the twisting of the wind this is into the wind and it's a 52-yard field goal attempt for Jonathan door it would be his longest he's off the left hash you see that wind whipping certainly as the leg to do it smooth Pat's out at door 452 [Applause] to back the two biggest pressure and longest kicks of Jonathan doors tenure as the new name kicker the junior from Charlotte you're 52 their name is Suarez last four drops they football is brought to you by head and shoulders lift away inch flakes and doubts stay headstrong by coca-cola share a coke with the Fighting Irish this season and by bright house financial build or McKenzie Network for the Miami Dolphins secretary Condoleezza Rice dr. Rice's on hand working one of her degrees from Notre Dame where's Joe Theismann Irish legend looks great at age 70 in our name quarterback made more recent time - Shaun Kaiser I'm gonna check out a rivalry that he was a part of it Notre Dame us he fills the sidelines and brings some of the beautiful people Jones I specific years old still out drive because he USC's offense gotta get go down 17 Heaton slovis climbs the pocket completely from Kyle Hamilton the safety on Alman Ross st. Brown its first down the same brown hangs on to the 38 if you're gonna play soft zone coverage and play high safeties is gonna be a window somewhere between great job of sliding and moving and it cut Hamilton full speed with the collision whose speed and legal it is malla pay I'm running to the left to the 45 yard line so good first down in Game five air a game of seven four since and I were talking a little bit earlier that hit these two high coverages in this salts out there is the area to attack [Applause] in her name until we three down linemen now the pay I gets to the end spins in front of the corner toward fry jr. and it's a first down for us see again in the roommate territory okay back-to-back runs first down second down calls [Music] the change put 10 to 12 ways to go from the 49 the freshmen slovis scans the field finds his tight end her crew minogue is just his fifth catch then used the titan much in this office because they see a lot of song go go to war there are going to be windows in it good 7-yard gain on first now to take the Irish Gilman takes the receiver on the edge it's the run inside with Malafaia the are China the first down Colin Kareem is sacked earlier on the tackle there I would just play to try to get the first down [Music] to do that they Matt lepay my brains three through that first line Hamilton the safety tackles them at the 29-yard line first down SC on the left side of the line for us she is their strong point that's Jackson and Barrett Tucker on the left side pushing the pile and they're getting a rhythm going here USC's get the feel for what notre dame is doing defensively run the ball first and second down and throw the short passing game over the middle of field first and second go just flipped over USC scored the first three in the game the next 20 a riches scored in the last four draws for his Trojan drive of the second half the freshman from Arizona slovis good job to throw on the run and find Kermit Hoch the tight end for catches in the first five games to catches the last four plays he's get released in a flat now bond is outside actually that's uh mucho para brakes up towards the quarterback when the quarterback starts to move slow his pump fakes misses playing basketball drol defender dumped it over his head great job by slogans whooping - opening drive to the 14 shame Austin Jackson the left tackle didn't move here comes pressure from the Irish slovis endzone shot forms goes up and we cannot bring it in it's very frightened your army code finally gets an opportunity for one-on-one throw on the outside with no help as he jumps up and get tips and outside release there's no help rides over 101 it's a little push off the left hand well he's being Brett and tries to make the one-handed catch very easily could be called wine out in the open Claire handful of Jersey that's called a stiff arm pac-12 officials let it go it's pac-12 on-field ACC replay wasn't enough familiar ACC officials Ashley to attend [Applause] inside run with car he'll get to the 9 yard line third in five coming up for us USC's god pretzel either [Music] for type 2 the Reds over five days deepest into Irish territory they've been firstly from Scottsdale Arizona do slovis lookit nothing there find something slava snapped rows complete Jameer Jones the defense been dropping but a flag comes down with the back end of the play it'll be on USC by the umpire right where the snap happened at the 10th great job - slovis movie number 70 offense penalty is declined zone coverage windows work tight as we say people were not getting open he held the ball as long as he could there's a takedown I mean he actually saved the big hit or this quarterback by pulling him down Joe and Mackenzie with who throw down some chiefs McGrath would come on good earlier tonight from 40 yards we'll be 27 [Applause] then Griffiths the punter is the holder almost blocked slow operation but the field goal is through and USC has its second field goal of night each team is scored on the opening possession of the second half the Irish lead is 14 the Flyers against Connor McDavid the Edmonton Oilers became then a golden assist against the Rangers competitor of course the great Catholic tap will be in the studio for us hockey season hits week - Michael Young back deep to receive last time broken tackle had nothing but green grass in front of them and lost the most important part of the deal [Applause] gives you the signal fair catch years so touch back in the Irish will take over the 25 those of you may have been watching Florida LSU get you caught up here our post brought to you by Brian house financial third straight game Tony Jones jr. over 100 with 129 already on 15 carries Cole commit caught a touchdown with the Irish up in the second quarter three touchdown receptions last four games and Brayton lensing 200 meters star sprinter from Oregon with the touchdown run 251 yards the end of the first half looked like the start of Texas Oklahoma during warmups every player on both teams has been assessed on it sports we like conduct anyone gets a second they're automatically ejected us see the first three nerd aim the next 20 USC just off a field goal and it's Jones junior back on the ground and the gain of about five yards in the big picture again on this game Doug here's Notre Dame the loss at Georgia by six Georgia loss today that'll hurt her names folks try to get into the playoff as a one lost team but Brian Kelly set it out very clear all that other stuff we'll handles this is the rivalry game for Notre Dame with respect to Navy other teams that play often Stanford this is the game that Notre Dame alums years later talk about Jones stopped in the backfield by Drake Jackson courage too far Armstrong I should say getting his carry as he comes back from it for me as a kid this was the game I love the memories I had of Anthony gave his returning kickoff in the second half in the USC comeback that's where it started for me he's and kid and the pageantry the colors the bands the fight songs there's nothing like this match this is college football one October here the next November out at the Coliseum Irish have won the last three meetings third and nine book stepping up finding space with throwing a rock complete to chrisfix in the first half shine on the 45 yard line it will be a gain of 19 to fake sir mayor Smith 34 in the backfield picks up a nice block great job at you book Watson keep his eyes upfield he could have run for five yards but he wasn't sure he could get the first down stay behind the line of scrimmage delivery strike you think delivered it or rather book delivers to claim full waiting to see if there's a catch know if it's out of Bounce so the one official going to bump his head down the path complete intended for chase played for you all strong low behind it's kicking around a little bit still lost sight of the ball whether he gains control before sliding out of bounds I don't know the previous play is under further review couldn't seed there with the two bodies on top of the ball very hard to differentiate the Terramax cone and see what you see here so he's gonna have to get control of the ball with his hands before he gets out of bounds and legs don't count there I don't see control complete control before he's out of bounds this appears to be an incomplete pass so if you have control between your knees and your head bounce that doesn't count that does not count really that's got to be one touchdown pass against Alabama that was caught between his knees maybe the rules have changed well there's years ago at some point he's hands yes before he gets out of bounds didn't the amazing thing is that it didn't touch the ground in the early part of that play is confirmed second down again Terry's the odd that we have split conferences and really the last year we're gonna have where it's one conference on the field the other conference in the replay it is Mike in 2020 the the entire crew replay and on field has to come from the same conference it goes back to the old days of intersectional games where you try to split the crews so this way nobody who's trying to do any funny business on you you felt comfortable if you had one official somewhere who you do pull commit on the edge handed by the facemask from John Huston they didn't grab and turn it so no Flags shy of a first down there a gain of about none where this looks like a true ordeal gets it out the flat and combate me in the athlete he is gaining ground not bleep Terri's with his hands grab and turn usually has Show and Tell for officials in that situation they in slow motion it looks a little more like if the fans here didn't agrees they saw that replay on the big board now it's third and one this is a place where Notre Dame has struggled offensively early in the season this offensive line has been very solid with 200 plus rushing yards so far then a lot of exchanging the two tight ends to one side and just slam it up in the middle for Jones will get the first down down to the 43 yard line verse if you speak so often about this new name often supplies for the bear performances for them most far better better performance a scene from the whole offense all together yes I mean this is no slouch up front for USC they are moving them around and getting up to the second level of getting bodies on these good linebackers and one of them's down right now yo denote a let's down Mike that's right probably a goat a old say and you had mentioned earlier and even ship along the Notre Dame offensive coordinator told us he's won an SC linebacker has looked like in the past and should look like and Chippewa was very concerned about Noah Thao Tay and who Fong go the linebacker and the safety young players supremely talented there was Tali a his head in there on that short yardage blood had a good run - he was a claim from a little bit of depth and had a clear window to the back so he had about a five-yard head start by Tony Jones jr. grab that left leg of the back end of that after the gain of three four first down tonight Boga Noga I should say comes in in his stead 26 for us city first and ten free and book and the Irish errs Jones running to the edge he will get two yards the 41 yard line fortunate to be running the ball to the right away from the corner blitz came off the weak side so the grass is gonna probably turn up the heat a little bit especially asian kid into the red zone he likes to get aggressive but for the linebackers to come up on the edgy come there's plaintiff and found effort from the edge on this one fake is the motion man looked fake certain takes off couldn't get out of the arm tackle granted peely just a gain of a yard it'll be third down coming up Tucker with the pressure from Clancy Pendergast Chris you know this guy very well he went up against a Clancy Pendergast Gordon a defense I did back in 2004 Emmitt Smith's last game with Arizona Cardinals and get in some of the blitzes and pressures that he does now of course he was doing them back then so it was a it was a familiar thing I saw I don't have good memories of the game guys 16 years in the NFL but with Arizona glue the Super Bowl he's Jones running and that pendergast defense comes up with a stop on three consecutive run plays here Caleb Tremblay the tackle so again analytics third of the game left inside of five minutes third quarter and the other guys 38 fourth down about five up 14 name's gonna live to go for it and again there was no question eight what they were going to do they had distinct plans nobody's looking at the play clock and making the decision they knew they were going to go they go and book underneath is incomplete trying to get on the same page with Tommy tremble the tight end stopped Greg Johnson the nickel in coverage and after the score of a field goal USC gets a hole as they try to build some momentum in this one down 14 as they stop the Irish on fourth and Bob Keeton slovis he's been very vocal in the USC bench after they kicked that field goal he went over to the vent screamed in his guise he said let's go finish we're right there encouraging his teammates slapping them high five strong leadership from this freshman quarterback over here guys well tap that makes sense with everything we've heard about it no moment too big for him thus far is another redshirt freshman Marquis step with the carry punishing runner and doing it again there with a gain of seven interesting there Doug is step came on the field our name right a Damilola out to put a fourth defensive lineman is there now adjusting to 30 being on the field but the numbers say they will be running the ball when he is in the game step here he comes again this time to his left until got a first down into Notre Dame territory so Chris this is a couple of drives now where USC is regaining some offense a moment they are they got it going and especially between the 20s but they got a stay patient with this inside blood game with all the three down front and then Doug mentioned the throws over the middle it is the weakness of this two deep zone defense at Notre Dame driving [Applause] from the Irish 49 slovis got time to come back to his tight ends of chrome and hope for catches in five games three receptions in this third quarter three receivers Doug is required they don't work up around that they're all on the outside part of the up do crowd so you can hold the covers with a guy over the top and get taking it away the big plays only Thunder catching the balls on the wide receiver squirt screens bring them in motion get them over the middle of field the five Big Bird area [Applause] bein taken away the best thing SC does it's Vaughan's now their filings on the board as we showed he didn't have one inside the 39-yard line down to the 38 first down as see on the move with three minutes left in the third [Music] that's a first down just keep positive yards positive place go get over anxious and started heading to the end zone continue what you're doing run the ball short passing game over the middle six is their home run enter Michael Pittman dinner exclusive receiver slovis taking a shot downfield touchdown paparazzi Browns put the safeties shuffled and caught it and just like his brother Edwin Elias c-print scores of the SC Notre Dame game here's the pass protection he's got plenty of time play-action fake holds Gillman the safety steps up Gilman the safety in the midfield steps up and he's late running the cover safe Brown down the middle grip one-handed catch the bulk of all the play-action pass frozen and the to deep coverage down the middle of field for Simpsons telling me in the first half we've been talking about somewhere in the middle of field is where do you have to attack this defense quick hits 5 plays 62 yards to just over 2 minutes extra point is added by chase McGrath and USC is within seven so Gilman's job is to get to the little field and take whoever is the middle read guy it's coming from the left side so off the play action he freezes a step that costs them because he can't get there in time now beautiful throw over the top a one-handed kids bringing it in the USC is back in the game and Chris that throw speaks to what Catherine was talking about here's a kid slovis hasn't played in three weeks and when he went out early with the concussion leading the guys off on the sidelines and then leading them with his play on the field yeah I like the aggressive mindset slovis is showing their guys they need it they need something to create some big plays it was a good play cloth by grandpa Graham Harrell you're exactly right to Doug the belt play-action fake is gonna make that bill of the field defender step up for just a half a second the formula doesn't need to be complicated for USC you see three down run the ball you see some four down then maybe you call the pass when everybody's looking at the line of scrimmage and looking over at the sideline and figured out the play the Saint Brown family has been all over us see no name the last few years three brothers playing college football common around the endzone let me know today involved the 25 Catherine after a Monroe Saint brown cup that touchdown yeah you talk about the pedigree the st. Brown family equina mia's played for the irish is now with the packers osiris a junior receiver at Stanford and Amon Rod told me that his German mom was tough on them academically the three are solid in French German and English his dad to time mr. universe he held treatment the three brothers admire each other's games and they take pieces from one another but when I asked Tom Monroe who the best receiver the family is he said well that's an easy question B of course he's a receiver you gotta say that right he's got to come with that attitude you see and a big game in the Coliseum against the Irish and I mentioned his brother equina me as who played for her they blocked a punt one year and then the following two years scored touchdowns as a receiver offsides on the kickoff so add five to the fair catch Irish started the thirty was back to jump me or Smith on the ground and he'll only gain a couple of yards and this USC defensive front is slowed down the Irish run game there's a hop in your step and there's a review cutting it to a one score game there's so money of time left now you want to come up with the stop and get it back to your back to your offense and they're getting more aggressive defensively the in book just 13 of 27 passing thus far tonight give it to Smith who will run to the edge on the left a Notre Dame has really handled what has been a problem for USC edge running throughout looks like Greg Johnson the nickel was injured on that play for us see so the Trojans already down Isaac Taylor Stewart is starting for poly a otay otay C Johnson the nickel third starter injured for a USC team that has absorbed a lot of injuries here in the first five and a half ballgames the arrow tota is back on the field he was the one who made to stop on the first run play of the drive he had his lake trapped underneath and bent backwards so third and one and book will keep it for the Irish you'll get the first down out to the 41 yard line with a banana half once his clock restarts left here in the third quarter this direction is key for Notre Dame to the USC defense honest they chased their secondary linebacker lever of chasing in a hurry so to the reverses in the misdirection wears down the Irish have been slow on first down in the second half not on this one Tony Jones junior who has been very impressive running the last three games takes it over a hundred fifty yards close to 150 147 with that gain of the first down toppy Kramer seventy-eight comes pulling out to the right watch him take his man to the ground Houston look pulls it keeps it chased down and that tremendous athletic ability of Drake Johnson showing there his dad a coach four star high school recruit an early enrollee a USA an early impact player as well we've seen him rush the passer we seen a big tackles on front plays we've seen him dropping coverage he's an athlete at the defensive end position and he's physical for a true freshman it's been three times watching the USC game is getting ready for this one good ninety is not really freshman today is that the type of thing mistakenly type freshmen no he is and he's good near he comes another pressure up the middle book fires incomplete had to get rid of it because the pressure was coming it's gonna cost a flat hotel Jay's gonna be caught for the hit on the quarterback [Applause] and clay Helton furious personal foul roughing the passer number one 15-yard penalty that's an automatic I'm a quarterback and I don't necessarily agree with you I mean takes him to the ground but he doesn't throw his full bodyweight on him and drive into the ground and the ball is just gone and Ian's book actually threw really early to get rid of it cuz he knew the hit was coming Turner Macaulay's the expert up here Terry yeah Mike I don't see this as very late a very late hit nor does he drive him or punish him into the ground like like it was required in college football I don't believe this was a foul take advantage of the break they got Jones gets a first step and almost had a touchdown a gain of 10 before hoof Wonga stop so that penalties like a turn I mean that's a stop and that's why clay Helton is so furious with the pac-12 officials here Irish try to take advantage of the opportunity taken to score lead after three Notre Dame 20 USC 13 back to their name stadium after these messages from your local NBC station you watching Notre Dame football on NBC presented by Bright House USC score the first three the Irish all 17 in the second USC getting the two scores in the third to make this a one score game as we begin the fourth quarter Mike Tirico Doug Flutie Chris Simms Catherines happened liya McHugh and Terry McCauley all with you here in South Bend Irish got a penalty on third down the clay Helton spent the entire quarter break complaining about commit got a blocker that's 7 to the 23 yard line Kolb commit let's go back one more time to that hit that had the USC coach furious when it happened ebook gets rid of the ball because he knows he's going to get hit so it's not a late hit and 80 to 90% of his body is off to the side as he takes him to the ground with an arm I don't see that as a penny exactly Doug does make a good effort to get to the side and doesn't drive him into the ground this really is not a foul second and three and book throws it to Michael Young too high and incomplete as he trying to get it to young Chris Steele is over there on coverage as you saw the stat go by how heavily penalized USC has been that has been one of the problems of his team turnovers and penalties play helps that we have to play a clean game to have a chance while only two penalties on his team the offside on the kickoff the start of this Drive and that one which is kept Notre Dame in business here as they face their death and part of a clean game is no turnovers which has been an issue for them to an over free game to this point Irish in field goal range to take a ten point lead if they make it you want to keep the drive alive third and three yes he's showing heat being on a Chris fake it was quickly Randy got away from Houston but the posses coming to sling him in the mouth over at the 25-yard line Hosea pulling out came across threw him down with anger but legally in the field goals coming it couldn't out fly I'll tell you the play that could have been a touchdown was the pass to command then we set up early that it was very well set up a great tackle but just as she laced at home and then USC offense stepped up this guy stepped up so far Jonathon door three of four in field goal attempts very few attempts before tonight but two big ones this one from 43 yards operation true and door bangs another one through [Applause] Jonathan doers head really has developed a routine has stumped with it and that penalty that Helton wanted didn't get heaps of Irish drive alive at Lenoir field or late to the tenth point never daily by Microsoft service by Lexus experience amazing if I stay far the toughest one agent today at 800 and to the third quarter tradition here so movie in unison when that social media put your cell phone flashlight on when you do it but I think a pretty darn cool tradition for night games under the golden dome has just begun that was awesome to watch that was pretty cool that's a lot of lighters out there laters at the concert that's pretty cool TenPoint Irish fleet Jonathan doors at his best game as a Notre Dame kicker and he in a touch touch back here travels started 425 last drive I'm going around st. Brown with a touchdown catch part of a big bunch really nice night corner the one time he gets man coverage he beats up on the corner route beautiful throw by two slovis but the key is the middle of the field against this Notre Dame defense the way they've been playing working his own slide move and eventually you get a play-action pass and have the big play first big play of the night down the field when he's had the opportunity he's made to play 17 catches 186 yards in the last two notre dame USC games the same brown family name be a part of this greatest intersectional robbery of college football meantime Michael Pittman jr. their star receiver has been held in check there's three receptions 18 yards as long as 10 to the night 8 yards Heaton slovis scores in this first two drives the second half the time the vibe jalape-- I couldn't hang on to the pass is incomplete you don't like the Pittman's gonna make a play [Music] it's a matter of whether it's tackled when it was made a couple weeks ago when he was in the scene voting it's Washington he's not one of those boisterous received who starts throwing stuff he gets frustrated on the sidelines similar to that tonight is a really great kid but they got to get him go this is the home run hitting back Stephen Carr his acceleration is blunted by Jalen Elliot's hit the safety stops in the yard shy comes to third and one or that was close to free [Applause] the michigan game these are outstanding Sheen in his stead receipts of Dante Vaughn tonight so vlogs one of the 6 DBS on the field here he gloves 31 they spread them the run with the big fellow mark he stepped from Indianapolis into Notre Dame territory Hamilton tagged him for a moment to slow him down until they got to the 41 yard line every time this guy gets to the ball the chains move 24 on that one chroming Hoch 84 to tight net and washes everything down he cuts it off the backside of that you're not just going to hit him with a shoulder and knock him to the ground step just has the low center of gravity strong legs tuck that ball away 8 carries 77 yards the Cathedral High School product from Deming Indianapolis [Applause] again three down linemen for neutered a and let's see with step in there though this take that as an invitation to run step four about two yards through white in on the tackle wiring tongue where the most fascinating lunch the chess game to [Music] keep away from the big play but just keep the ball when you see that three to five yards or run at least stay with it we held something anyway can ran down to the river [Applause] the timeout pressure here I'm slow this will just throw it away Notre Dame says is inside the tackle box is there a receiver over there close enough for grounding no conversation just third down coming up there was no change we're trying to encourage the run play and then all of a sudden everybody's up in the Box incoming middle golf cross means to call that the backers criss crossing but it's a good run shopping blitz put pressure on here's a guy in the neighborhood intentional grounding third and seven ten ten three minutes into the fourth four down territory Stephen Clark the running back wasn't pumping up the crowd he wanted a signal from the sidewalk on the outside and they go that way Farms goes up and catches it at the 21 yard line Tyler Vaughn's using his strength to go up to get a 17 yard completion so you're gonna bring pressure you're one-on-one you put your best DP against the second receiver what is considered the second receiver and bond sees the ball thrown as long as the receiver sees his ball thrown he can react to it in the air they go up in high point the ball so well these four receivers now for USC on the fringe of the red zone and a 10-point game it is Stephen Carr with a run will twist forward for about four or five yards that point Chris that Doug just made that goes back to Phil Bella check mine said take your best corner put him on your second best receiver Elijah Griffith me or USC is walked up the tunnel by the athletic trainer second and six higher spring precious love is underneath complete pip and catch and run to the 5-yard line first and goal USC [Music] it finally got one coverage on the ground do anything about it the ball quick this is where USC is struggle gotta find the red zone touchdown slow this up top to the catch at a USC touchdown Tyler Vaughan tightens this up to a three point game well we say Pitman's number-one receiver but bonds is the most athletic as far as going up and getting the ball he's just beat someone that release meets pride on the release he gets the outside find your one-on-one coverage and give these receivers a chance to make a play on the ball was talking to one of the USC coaches before the game he said we talk to our corners Pitman so talented st. Browns good in the slop but the guy our corners our USC corners hate going against and practice it's 21 he's got that gifted skillset can do it all big extra point is added by chase McGrath got a ball game at South Bend USC three drives the second half three scores a field goal and two touchdowns the latest Tyler Vaughn's USC within three chance to tie the record for the longest win streak in Premier League history can they do it against their arch rivals Manchester United let's at the start old traffic is low on the match up next Sunday 11:30 a.m. Eastern on NBC SN o Premier League this weekend but wow what a slate next week Heaton slovis the freshman down struggling with his comeback three scoring drives in a row now it is a three-point game it's to be a defining drive all the Momentum's gone through USC now you got a rhythm on offense Stan house kick go all the way to the back of the endzone it'll be a touchback game takes over at the 25 let's go back to that slovis touchdown drive it starts with running the football first three-man front and starting to gas although there was pressure on this one steps cuts through and positive game they started to run the ball you SCC so now Notre Dame playing more man coverage and five-year one-on-one matchup and put it up these receivers are so athletic it's Vaughn's that's getting the one-on-one matchups for the most part finally Pittman got into the act on a slant route but it's Vaughn's doing the damage because he has no safety help on his side of the field and he's so athletic and go up to get the ball if they stay patient with that run game they can put Notre Dame's defense in a real bind or they're gonna have to think about putting that extra guy in the box to stop the run and then these guys outside are long and they can adjust the ball in those 50/50 situations field goal Drive last timeout Tony Jones junior star for the Irish on the ground so far who gained 3 yards out to the 28 yard line is total go to 161 here on this night play help in this USC team no matter what happens here they will be very much in the picture in the pac-12 South but a win here would have so many implications to come on the road and beat the number 19 well dropped it picked it up and living get out of bounds not lose er maybe gain one but a big third down coming up as we dive under ten minutes here in the fourth quarter this is a crucial third down for me a book at Notre Dame's office with the rhythm that USC has won often do not want to give then a little stack head of late and you can feel the momentum that's alert totally can [Applause] from the 33 but five options to throw he picks his tight end and come out as a first down the USC sideline what an offensive pastor fares but the chains move first down that's a chance to stand in there because commend is running a wheel route stop on the outside takes a couple seconds for it to happen with that combination round it looks like he's going to run the wheel and go up the sideline and puts the brakes on little push off that's a bad there's nothing from the 37 Jones left looking for blockers delivering the blow he dove nine on first down for Tony Jones junior to solid first down runs to start these disk drive for Notre Dame flag down back in the secondary Ashley the guy who counts the number of players on the field you're not playing Canadian football out there are they no no it's cool it's not that cold Ryan tells me decline takes second and one [Applause] come on Oh McHale out made the TAT McHale who made the tackle for us see haven't seen him very often this season for the Trojans there's 12 as they were trying to exchange personnel again second and 1 Jones insides would be closed Drake Jackson the tackle the spot looks to be enough to move them and the chains will go as we go under nine minutes Jackson was the unblocked guy on the end of the line and he just closed him down and chased the edge of the type the input breeds that even though it's short yardage play on Jackson went to the sidelines for USC with a limp Caleb Tremblay comes in in his stead as Jones gets a breather a jumpier Smith will be the Irish back we've seen limited production from Jafar Armstrong in his return from injury and he respects me to find the whole excludes of the secondary get to the 40 yard line the 13 yard first down pickup for the sophomore from Sanford North Carolina boy Cramer makes a great block commit pulls back and blocks big gashing play on first out three consecutive ways that have been positive gains look we talked during the week me you Chris about the USC front they're talented but they're thin that would Notre Dame be able to wear them down look at that 38 carries 268 yards the Irish are trying to build one of those drives to give them a cushion do what the guys up front Smith games a couple on first down and we're halfway through the fourth quarter Chris yeah halfway through the first quarter by can you make the point I mean this donor they run off Texas but I you know I've been calling for this because it's special as far as their run game design all the different things they can do pulling guards pulling guards and tackles together I don't think you se seen a running attack quite like this all year long in the pac-12 or anywhere else and Chris we saw in second half against Virginia against Bowling Green you couldn't really judge based on the competition but it's showing up tonight of this Merritt Smith again close to the first down at the 30 yard line he's going to have it we had a chance to sit down with Robert Haynes e offensive tackle and he said one set of eyes he wants all to wear him down and for Sara we'll take control the game and have one set of eyes enough it's fine that means you all see the front together you communicate and everyone's working in combination with each other and come off the ball and that's where it's got to in the fourth quarter and that's what he was hoping for by the fourth quarter we don't get to talk about offensive line coach jeff quinn enough but we should because he's one of the best of all line coaches in all of college football have been things he asked us online to do on a week-to-week basis over 30 pull he's rolling his residence with his lead blocker input for 14 to the 16 and there's a flag down back with that bowl opened up little ginger coming back to the huddle there are two files on the offense holding number 72 that penalty is declined first will file a legal block below the waist number 78 that 15-yard penalty will be enforced still first down the bigger penalty becomes key pushes no name back to the 45 yard line walk below the waist of 15-yarder was called on Tommy creamer 78 this back to the 41 he just mentioned Jeff Quinton the offensive line coach and the job his group is done after all the good stuff you get one of those so now here's book for running and throwing complete to the sidelines to commit and Colt the mental state bounced to the 13 yard line his sixth reception above the evening and then this is being an athlete this is basketball type skills where you blowing out the fenders you put your head down and tuck it like you're gonna go and then draw that defender up he's not open he's covered on the play but all of a sudden the book takes off and out dump it over his head nice touch took advantage of malgo who's seeing significant time here those injuries on the USC defense taking their toll as well from the 30 again book design run Houston will bring him down and we've got third down guns gonna be third and 10 for the Irishman five and a half to go to get a field goal makes this a six-point game so a huge play for us sees defense and Brian Kelly's offense no doubt about it Notre Dame winds up with just a field goal they are uneasy with the way USC has been moving the football big big conversion chip long as a play caller he always you know third down stuff you can't gadget him on third down and long your name bleeding clock here as we go under five minutes and a big snap third and ten [Applause] five receivers in the pattern both taking up getting into the 20 SEK first down over day the 14 so big the athleticism having a quarterback that can use his legs watch Houston in the middle he's the whole player too too deep coverage he turns his head to find work and that's when Tiant book stepped up and step through he's looking downfield looking downfield a nice job of stepping up in the pocket he just feels it open up it takes the Irish just under 300 rushing yards on the night and they continue to bleed clock as you go out of bounds with this much time left on the clock doesn't restart the game clock once the change set so it's rolling it's moving so are the Irish Tony Jones who gets down to the eight yard line five on first down and clay help and watches that clock going to four minutes knowing his team's got to come up with a red zone stop here it's a touchdown and put them down two scores might not have enough time to come back this has been an impressive Drive basically by the offensive line driving people off the ball and Ian book using his legs as well that started I with their back to the wall because all the momentum all the momentum has been USC going into this Drive from the 8 they're gonna throw here is no it's gonna run take it off [Applause] the quarterback draw but it's a lead for the true and it's a tight window he knew if he could stay on his feet he's going to get to the end of just staying up at six man rush and he slices through Tony Jones the lead back is basically lead raw and Ian book becomes a tailback Notre Dame has run for 311 yards on this USC defense here tonight Jonathon doors had three big field goals for the Irish adds the extra point and with 333 to go playing his best game of the year he's got a great arm but his legs have done it the last couple of drives especially on that one little late lead by 10 SC fans on the west coast SNL coming soon here this is cool during the break our director Pierre Bruce about this the defensive guys the Poirot the Karim Karim zeolites and job well done Thank You men the lead is ten can be taken out yes it will be by famous Jones who's been held in check tonight below he Gilman has 'm that's where it's going to end at the 21 yard line see Claypool and Hamilton was too big great athletes from each side with ball from our names floats and get up as they climbed on that tackle by Doug Katie slovis high school offensive coordinators watch play cool come over it's Kurt Warner now you're relaxed it's like there's you get after it it probably ends up an interception but you got to be aggressive because you know you have to score quickly into convert science and stuff curtailing us no moment too big for this kid he's got to go quick around the 20 looking out the chroman hope the tight-end only a gain of one Jeremiah will support mo with the tackle these fans who were really quiet as their name was driving down now kick it up slovis is big though [Applause] he's got a big inside of three minutes Lotus pocket collapsing escapes eyes down field again chroman hope the tight end he's had a season in this second half first down SC you're gonna be throwing almost every down so you get into rhythm you know what it's double cloud everybody's dropping and playin coverage they're deep the corners are rolled up taking away short outside throws to give some of that moving around the 34-hour Irish Rush 3 Kareem gets through slovis escapes nothing's open downfield so we'll just take an exit ramp on the nd sideline at the 42:33 to go may only be a three-man rush but Korea gets pressure coming around the edge and flushes the quarterback so I think he's doing a great job slowness of moving around buying time cuz if you keep getting out of bounds and stopping the clock on first downs there's enough time to get it done name-dropping back in coverage again rushing three slovis on the move good job to find Tyler Vaughn's who got the touchdown earlier stayed on his feet 44 game of 50 with 213 to go when you get three then rush soft zone coverage out there the moving around buys windows for people it buys them the time and opportunity to find an open area and rushing three who comes up to the sack Jones the Rochester New York whose role is increased when Dale and Hayes injured his shoulder comes up with a big play USC timeout while chroman hooks working up top on Jones up there gets help from his tailback but Jones just keeps working Jameer Jones who actually was the guy that came up with the biggest play of the game against Virginia to turn that game around and he also dropped in coverage did a nice job earlier tonight on another plate Jones has showed up and again that rule in college football now where you have four games to play before you grid shirt and don't have the season count against one girls ability seasons Jones was ticketed for that and then the Hayes injury happened and Chris Sims that says so much about the hundred eighteen of the quality of death that you can go to a guy we were gonna redshirt and he's an impact player at big spot and in that impact play you can't block them with tight ads he can't block them with running backs he's got a tremendous motor and really the strength of this Notre Dame team and what's allowed them to do these creative Corp lead offenses all the great pop structures that they have two timeouts just under two minutes slogans shoveling Stephen Carr tonight's call against the three-man rush and it's a first down for USC at the 31 yard line absolutely a great call everyone failing out in the cupboard she said of running a draw play which is basically it's a kind of a middle screen shovel pants let everybody drop deep get him the ball behind the three Russian alignment now slovis escapes again as he throws that spot at the 12 yard line by Amin Ross ain't brown as slovis took a heavy hit minute 36 left 19 yard game great job of buying time and movement now the windows get a little tighter now you get great real great job but this is what you have to do but against the 3-band Russian man once again and his slovis what can end zone he's going to take off he'll run for it and slovers when he stopped at a two yard bomb again coming off the concussion heavy hit from the combination of true whites and a lonely Gilman minute 13 left time is important he gets tackled in bounds with the clock and the timeout is taken he was he gonna take a timeout here who's Kyle Hamilton not Gilman beggar partner Caleb he was so close here at the 2 yard line and it is first down need a field goal and a touchdown minute 11 but now you only have one timeout left to work with you're so close you have to go after the touchdown you do not get tackled in the other play Paul plays that are going to get in that you're throwing the ball into the end zone and this is the perfect spot for pick plays rough place whatever you want to call I'll be curious with the two quarterbacks here Doug oh sorry Hugh then Chris what do you guys see if she watch slovis play here tonight though I think he's got poise confidence he missed a couple but he had to figure out what was going on at the flexibly and what's in speaker - amazing I can't say enough about the young guy a freshman and this in this environment he's answered everything here in the second half and you can tell it just being here on the field guys the situation is not too big for them very impressed very important to USC one for the first down for the touchdown slope is going to throat for it broken tried to get into Pitman and Dante Vaughan in coverage third down [Applause] lavon's a big strong physical defensive back get your hands on the receiver gets his head around and plays the ball nicely he's had his issues have come playing the ball he's always been in great position great job seeing the throw and one of the things because nature DeSean Crawford Tariq Gracie has not played as much here tonight with Vaughn one thing they like about it [Applause] when a whistle he's no play okay said no planning is a whistle so 1:11 back on the clock of a down boxes back at second with second and one which is very important to USC to get that extra play so you can still take their shots rather than convincing yourself you're gonna have to run the ball second one and getting nosy they're going to hand it off inside step power his way to the goal line and in for the touchdown so the man in Notre Dame cannot stop on first contact from Indianapolis work he step with the touchdown and it's a four-point game he had no business getting in the end zone Byron tangle but Moses steps through 95 clean and has some two yards deep in the backfield back peddling push the old Bush pushed into the end zone and they're still in it Sailaja parents hunker not Reggie push with the push this time not lighter going in in step young man it wasn't her name commit from the Cathedral High School in Indianapolis has made this a four-point game crucial extra point for chase McGrath and it's a three-point game with an onside kick get a minute floor to go always a great rivalry somehow it always delivers it has one more time USC try to get it back on onside kick when we come back as a whistle USC comes back in scores minutes for left big second half for the Trojans they've scored 24 points our key step redshirt freshman from Indianapolis scores to make it a three-point game and now Notre Dame will see USC and chase McGrath try to stop the onside kick looks like you set up say the kick will plug it was set up to come to the wide side of the field over here now looking at the boundary look at the formation of the Irish would take a timeout right pulliam's special teams coordinator for the Irish so so what the setup was now we'll go to plan B Frank Kelly saw the point of the ball going the other way so maybe one of those where you line up looking to the boundary and then the last second flip to go the other way when he first set the ball on the tee at the laces facing to the wide side of the field the ball in the short side has if you take it to the short side of the field there's not enough time for your players you get to the ball you get more time for the players to make that run but at the last second body language was that he was going to kick in short side again he's lining the ball up it appears looking wide side laces to the wide side of the field which was the kick is going to go wide side is that a deep because there is another individual on this side of the ball looking to kick the ball that way switch over to kick to the wide side of the field nerd and brings its players over here's the kick the big bounce and waiting for his nerve a tight end drop rates and he jumps on in at midfield and with one timeout left that should do it [Music] a nice big hop won't feel that secure the game all right Kelly talked to his team on Thursday after practice about every individual would have to contribute for this game there's a prop right the tight end who doesn't see much of the passing game but he comes over it makes a very big play play helping his complain the grind Kelly was coming down and yelling on the field for his team pay attention over this way it was out on the field and now the referee along the headlines was going to walk over to speak with clay Helton who's having a conversation with the side jokes gee do you want to be that guy you wouldn't be that guy with the ball coming at so Brian Kelly Cesar is over there wait help and saw that Wow he's on the field wall it's kicked Terry McCauley you can't be there right no he can't be out of the team area like that certainly not while the ball is in play this really shouldn't go in community about challengeable for too many men on the field it is not [Applause] Wow maybe he's not as quick as he used to be and he thought if you do plan it interesting it's an interesting one it was very small by the official on a penalty and retake in that situation if they were gonna call something so USC is going to drop to three and three will play Arizona they have everything still to play for in the pac-12 in the south as we go above the rest brought to you by Jersey Mike's Subs and the star here is us he takes a timeout was Tony Jones jr. on the ground what a day took control the game Tony joke breaking tackles down well but again creative ways to get the ball in the forever [Music] [Applause] I mean yeah I saw him break more tackles today than I've seen a break 1:33 Virginia 176 tonight back to that onside kick beat you see the get back codes all the time for the coaches back it's rare that Brian Kelly is the guy in the field Brent Venables from Clemson is the most frequent abuser of a coach being on the field usually somebody some strength guy Yanks him back Kelly out there as he was trying to get the players attention and it would have been interesting clumping again it would have been another onside kick it's not like the ball would have been awarded to USC but it would move the ball closer so they would have had a shorter feel if they would have recovered the onside kick that is past going forward as I said USC three and three two and one in the league they still have a great chance of the pac-12 South if they can't keep playing like this we're gonna have any chances to win a bunch of the games the rest of the way no doubt they're talented they've got a quarterback that's got some savvy and poised to have brought them back tonight slovis I saw a lot of good things out of us and no doubt about it to Friday night games don't have to buys tough games coming up including the game against our the mean time for Game five and one they'll keep the championship hopes alive they will get a week off and then we'll go to Ann Arbor and play Michigan in the toughest remaining game on their schedule but in the rivalry game 32:27 Notre Dame beat Southern California again [Applause] four straight for Notre Dame and here's cat pretended coach how would you best describe your team's effort in this victory tonight anytime you're in a rivalry game you're you know you're gonna fight to the very end our guys did and found a way to win against you know very game UFC team they're very difficult to defend offensively obviously they came up with some big plays at the end and it made it very difficult on us you know I thought we had a good plan going in but they stress you they pride you we had the big drive I thought that ate up a lot of clock in the fourth quarter that put us up by 10 and then we held on at the end and great victory for our football team what can you say about that final scoring drive from your quarterback Ian book and the effort that he put forth himself in that one yeah you have to use his legs you know they were playing a lot of too deep taking a lot of things away so running the football and using his legs he's able to do that and kept plays alive for us he was really clutch for us so again a great team victory our defense hung in there they played great in the first half and then you know obviously you know with so many snaps in the second half they knew what we were doing got it kind of a bead on it and put us in some tough situations but our kids hung in there fought and a great victory coach thank you very much Thank You Catherine all right tap Thank You USC had won eight in a row in this series before Brian Kelly got here he's now seven and three in this series the only coaches who've beaten USC more in Notre Dame history Frank Leahy eight Brian Kelly's full press conference
