hello everyone welcome back to another video and  today i'm going to be doing a full ipad procreate   digital art drawing process video for you guys  um i just put up on the screen some specifics   about what i use and today i'm going to be drawing  this cute little sketch that i did the other night   of izuku midoriya from my hero academia  here are the canvas specifics i get a lot   of questions about the canvas specifics i use  um so here they are so with all that said and   done let's begin but first let's hear a word  from today's sponsors paperlike guys i've been   using paperlike for years now and they're always  a friend here on the channel paperlike is the   original matte screen protector for creators their  mission is to make technology truly enjoyable   paper-like screen protectors not only mimic the  feel of paper but also really sound like you're   writing on it you get much more control of the  pencil when writing sketching and drawing due   to the paper-like resistance and roughness thus  making the apple pencil so much more enjoyable   i found that i managed to achieve smoother and  more precise lines when using paper like as its   texture provides a more stable surface for the  apple pencil but simultaneously it is friendlier   to the apple pencil tips than other screen  protectors i haven't had to change my apple pencil   nib in almost a year while using the paper-like  screen protector the paper-like screen protectors   also drastically reduce glare and fingerprints  you'll notice that in my videos including this   one there is little to no glare and fingerprint  marks on my screen each pack includes a set of   two paper like covers and application accessories  that makes the application easy they also have a   quick and easy to follow application video that  you can watch for a bubble free application of   your screen protector and on top of that  paper like ships worldwide for free with a   100 satisfaction guarantee if you'd like to try  paper like out for yourself go to paperlike.com   piper4 to get your new screen protector  thanks for sponsoring today's video paper like   so with all that said and done let's begin so i  have this little sketch layer that i normally turn   the opacity down on and then i add a layer on top  of it and this is where i'm going to be doing my   line art so i've been really uh loving doing line  art with this round sort of wet brush that i got   from a blue satan brush set on their gum road i'm  a big fan of this brush set i highly recommend it   i did like edit them just a little bit after  i got them but yeah i really really enjoy them   uh so yeah i fixed the eyes a little bit so that  they fit my style a bit more and then i went   straight into the line art and as you'll notice i  do my line art in like this sort of dark red color   because i normally you'll see later change my  line art layer to like either a multiply or   a overlay layer so basically the dark red has  like there's a point to it i don't just do it   because i feel like it looks cool but yeah also  depending on the the mood of the drawing i'll   do the liner in a different color but my usual  go-to is a dark red so i go over the little sketch   that i had and i just lined the whole thing all  using the same brush i pretty much use the same   brush for everything in my digital art drawings  i don't really use a wide variety of brushes   purely because i'm lazy i pretty much just use  this round wet brush for pretty much everything   so yeah i kind of just drew him in this cute  little chilled out pose he's in a hoodie and   uh yeah i i really actually enjoy drawing  clothing folds and fabric folds so i always love   dressing up my characters in really baggy  clothes because it just means i get to draw   more folds and i quite enjoy it it's yeah  it's fun it's like a little puzzle um so   yeah i just drew in this kind of  cute cozy pose and just chilling and i'll do the same thing with the hair i  normally go back and forth undoing and redoing uh   like hair strands just because i the way i  draw hair is very random and sporadic so it   doesn't always look good first time around  and sometimes i'll even use the liquify tool   on procreate to kind of adjust anything  that seems like it's a little bit off   it's just like a little adjust brush that you can  use and i find it really helpful just to kind of   do the final perspective details and  drawings and anatomy that's kind of my go-to i just did some more details in the hair added his  other leg because i realized his arm was floating   and yeah just kind of finishing up the line art  and as you can see i'm not very precious with my   line art i don't make sure that my lines are  closed or anything i just kind of do it in a   sort of a sketchy style still because that's how  i um i like my drawings to look but once i'm happy   with it i will delete the sketch layer underneath  and then just add any final details to the line   art layer that i feel like are missing like his  little freckles and any eyelashes stuff like that   and then after that is done on the same layer i  will start adding some basic shades and this is   something that i really enjoy doing in my digital  art which is just doing like some minimal or like   base shading on the line art layer that as i said  then becomes a multiply layer and it just provides   both just like a a base for when i do my shadows  later on in rendering but it also creates like   a really nice sort of texture of overlays i can't  really explain it but i think it looks really cool   uh when i do this so yeah i don't go too crazy  with the shadings i do it like i as if i was doing   it with a pencil traditionally in a sketchbook  just sort of soft shadows here and there yeah   especially on the clothes because it'll save quite  a lot of time in coloring if someone who's quite   impatient with rendering this is a great way to  render stuff because once you turn this layer into   a multiply or an overlay once you add color  underneath it like it's got shadows immediately   immediate shading you don't really have to do  anything else so yeah it's kind of um an easy   way to do things so as i said once i'm happy  with this layer i will turn it into a multiply   layer and then i change the background color  normally this is when i pick sort of the the   background color and adjacent colors because next  up i'm going to be adding the flat colors of the   drawing and keep in mind that all the colors have  to go on layers underneath the line art layer   because as i said our line art layer has a  layer style on it so if you want the colors   underneath to shine through and still see  the line earlier it has to go underneath and at first you probably won't see much  from this whole line art layer thing   it but as you can see here in the hoodie basically  the line art just changes color depending on the   color that you put underneath it so i'll make a  new layer for every different object basically   in the drawing and put a flat color layer on it  so the hoodie will be on its own layer the skin   will be on its other layer the trousers will be  on its own separate layer as well this way i can   alpha lock them later on if i need to and apply  colors a bit more loosely and without having to be   too precious with staying within the  lines um alpha locking is pretty much   my best friend when it comes to digital  art so uh yeah this is the easiest way   for me to work with it so then i as you can  see added another layer for the trousers and here you can see a little bit more clearly  what i meant with the shadows from the line   art layer kind of just immediately creating  shadows once you add colors underneath them   it's like if you're someone that doesn't really  fancy rendering or um you know doing shading   a lot this is kind of a good compromise where  you can render drawings pretty quickly and easily but i of course am extra and i do go the extra  mile with rendering because i do quite enjoy   rendering so i add stuff on top of this  of course which i will show you later on   so here you can see me just kind of adding the  flats for the hair i'm never very precious with   adding the flat color to the hair because i do  uh pretty much go over the whole thing later on   uh which you'll see but um yeah just adding the  the flat colors and then i'll alpha lock all of   the flat colors so that then i can just draw  on that layer without going out of the lines   uh if you don't know what alpha locking  means it's basically a tool that just   uh creates a sort of a template so if  you if you alpha lock a layer once you uh   draw on it you can't draw outside of the  colors that are already on the on the layer   or the shape that's already on the layer so it  basically makes you not draw outside of the lines so then i go in and start adding more shading  on top of the shading i already did in the line   art layer and here is when i actually play  with colored shading because the line art   layer shading only has one color to it so yeah  i'll start adding you know flushes and blushes   and coloring in the eyes and i'll start deepening  the shadows with some some darker browns etc   and this is just how i render skin essentially i  just keep adding darker and darker colors until   i've created enough of a contrast  that i like with the shading so this is why i normally start with quite  a light color for the skin tones because the   way that i render is i just keep going darker as  opposed to going lighter so this way i can make   sure that i have a bit of a a mid mid tone sort  of to work with so then what i'm doing here is   i'm adding a layer on top of the line art layer  and this is something that i've been doing a lot   recently for rendering is just adding like extra  highlights on top of the line art layer so that   the um the multiply effect of the line art layer  doesn't cover up everything i do on this layer   i hope this makes sense but basically everything  that i do on the flat color layer if it's directly   underneath a line that i've done on the multiply  layer it will be a darker shade but for highlights   i want them to like really pop so i'll do it  basically on top of all the layers so that they   aren't obscured by anything and they really get to  shine so on this i'll normally do like the really   light highlights on the face the glares on the  reflections of the eyes and just anything that   i want to really stand out um on top of the the  liner as well and i've been really obsessed with   doing this i think it adds a very specific  um like style of rendering to the drawing so yeah i'll basically then just repeat  that uh those steps for everything else   in the drawing on the hoodie on the trousers on  the hair i'll color pick the color that i have   for the flats darken it a little bit and then use  that to go over the sort of guidelines that we had   from the line art layer and just kind of start  shading in stuff and add deeper colors and   darker colors uh every once in a while and then  once i'm happy with that i'll again add a layer   on top of the line art and this is where i'm  going to be doing the uh the highlights for   that specific object and just like in the flats  and adding flat colors i will add a different   layer for each let's call it accent details layer  so the hoodie accent details layer will be on its   own layer and the face ones will be on a different  layer etc etc all on top of the line art layer   oh my god take a shot every time i  say layer in this video you will die so now for the hair uh this is where i told you  that i i'm not very precious with doing the flats   or even the rendering right now i just kind  of add in the basic shadings for now because   the highlights details is where it's at for  me in the hair i pretty much render the hair   entirely on a separate layer on top of all  the other layers and that is how i managed to   render out hair well at least how i've been doing  it recently so i'll add the darkest spots so   all the blacks in his hair and then i'll color  pick the highlight color which is this sort of   teal green and on that extra layer that i've  just created on top of the line art layer i'll   just start adding different strands of hair and  um doing like specific highlights and this is   sort of how i started doing this technique  was mainly for hair and adding stray hairs   because normally adding straight hairs didn't  really work very well with the whole multiply   layer on top of it so this way i can be  a little bit more free with how i draw   hair and i just kind of started doing that  with all the other elements in my drawings   this is probably one of my favorite parts  of drawing is rendering out hair and adding   highlights and as you can see it just adds a lot  more dimension to um to the hair once you have   these different you know depths to it you've got  the really dark area which i'm going to darken   even more now i'll click on the layer where i  have the flat color for the hair select it so   it's basically alpha locking it but you can do  it on another layer so i select that area i add   another layer on top of all of our layers and  then i just kind of add this sort of textured   like black onto the hair just to kind of  deepen the the bottom of his hair and the uh   his middle parting over there and um this is kind  of optional obviously i just do this for i think   even more depth or stylizing it and then i turn  off that selection and just kind of erase parts   that i uh don't want it to be on again i just  kind of mess around all the time even when i'm   drawing i just kind of just mess around every time  and find out different and new ways to do things   yeah so then i went out onto the trousers and  repeated those steps from before shading in   everything and then adding the  highlights and then adding a   highlights layer on top of the line art  layers to really make those highlights pop   so then i also added another layer  on top on our highlight layer group   and did the same thing that i've been doing with  the stars um i know that a lot of these steps seem   a bit counterintuitive and like they contradict  each other's but it's just how i have found that   i can do like the effects that i want uh so i  have a little bit of the line art still showing   but i don't really like the color that the  line art in multiply was giving off it was   way too red so i actually added an extra line  art to the stars because i wanted them to have   just a nice little ochre color to them  so yeah again very optional things here   and we're getting to the final stages now i'm  actually going to show you guys how i do rim   lighting i added yet another layer on top of  everything i picked a really nice vibrant color   because if you're gonna do rim lighting you gotta  go crazy with it rim lighting is like the sexiest   thing so i got this really hot pink and i'm going  to use my sort of wet round brush to add this   like a streak of hot pink to the the edges on his  left side so everything on his left the far edge   is going to have a little streak of pink and  this is sort of how i do rim lighting i just   kind of uh pick a source a light source  for the rim lighting and i go from there so if you can just imagine like a hot pink lamp  over there on his on his right side and our left   uh everything that you imagine that would hit him  you just draw on there and yeah and then i go on   to the layer styles for that hot pink layer and  i go down to the light layer styles and kind of   go through them and see which one looks best to be  honest i normally always go for the hard light and   then i toggle the opacity until it's as intense  as i want it to be and that's my rim lighting   and initially this is how the drawing was meant  to look like uh this would have been how i would   have finished it but i actually wanted to go  the extra mile and draw some of his like little   lightning bolts that he does when he uses uh his  one for all power um if you guys watch my hair   academia which you should it's very cool and very  pretty but yeah he has like these cool lightning   bolts that uh come out of him so i wanted to do  some you know some extra special effects here   um so what i do is i just draw these random  geometric lines coming out of him and then   i taper the edges by just using an eraser and  making them all pointy and sharp and i did two   uh different ones one on the on the left and  one on the right and they just kind of kept   messing with it procreate has this really cool  thing that if you do a bunch of lines and then   pause with at your destination point the procreate  actually turns it into straight vector lines so   then i duplicated my layer with my lightning bolts  turned the top layer into white and then the layer   that we originally did that was in this sort of  teal green i used the gaussian blur gaussian blur   effect to blur it out and make this sort of like  neon lightening effect i hope that made sense and then finally i had a look at the overall  composition of what i'd done and i realized   that everything was a bit too much to the left  so i grabbed all of my layers which you can do   by just clicking and sliding to the right on  your layers on procreate and you can select   multiple layers at once and i just moved them all  a little bit to the right so he was fully centered   and finally i actually i just signed the  artwork because i always forget to do that   so i added another layer for my signature  and i have it as like a little stamp   i actually have explained in another video  how i made that so if if you are wondering   how i did that it's probably in one of my  other procreate videos where i show you   guys how to make your signature into a stamp  on procreate very easy and very convenient   and yeah that was that was it for today's video  you guys this is my little fan art of izuku   midoriya i hope you enjoyed i hope you understood  my process or if i'm if i made no sense leave me   any questions down there um links to my brushes  that i use and everything else that i use will   be down there in the description box i hope this  was helpful uh yeah thank you so much for watching   uh i hope you enjoyed above anything else  and i will see you guys in my next video bye
