hello YouTube I'm David with the David West Channel but this morning I wanted to show you for completely different forms of friction fire and so we'll start off with the fire roll cotton and ashes then we'll go to the hand drill and I think I'll use this pine fire board along with this horse weed spindle then we'll take a look at the bow drill and this is the pine this is the set that I got from the two-by-four the pine 2x4 and then although I'd like to have more bamboo than this I think I can make this work will do the bamboo fire saw so let's start off with the good old faithful easy to do cotton and ashes fire roll I like to have ashes on the outside of the road as well as ashes on the inside the ashes on the outside of the role allows the boards to be able to grip the roll so that it can be driven and you can see the smoke so you know we have ignition now this part of the role here this packs too tightly it's not going to burn very well so I'll try to unwind it and loosen it up a little bit well let's heating up these pine needles and getting hotter and hotter let's go ahead and prep this bow drill friction fire fire board I'm gonna take some of that point off all right that's a little bit of work out of the way and I think I still have time while this continues to get hot let me go ahead and start on my tinder bundle this is a tinder bundle for the bamboo fire saw I'm gonna need more than that but I better go ahead and get the flames on that fire all right now the next thing we'll will do yes yeah see I'm going to need more tinder bundle than that when I get ready to the bamboo fire saw we'll set it off to the side let's go ahead and take this pine fire board and make a hand drill friction fire can you see it we've got a tinder bundle Dylan I think it's full of leaves I don't like so many leaves being in it even though they will burn a lot of times they can deflect my breath from causing the hot air to blow all the way through it let's try that and once again I've used up all my straw that I used as sort of a handle to go around this so I'm going to try with the flames a little bit close to the fingers try it like this we'll put it right in here and put this on top and maybe get another handful of pine needles as a of some sort of a handle for it let's give it a try I think I'll use ashes for grip edge looking pretty good oh yeah come on stay let there we go that's the fire roll in the hand drill now let's get set up on the ground and do a burning cut or notch and get the bow drill let's just try it see what happens now let's do a burn in I smell burning pine that's a deep nut so I'm glad I got some dust to pack back in there and when you look down on the end of a spindle you always want it to be round and that's pretty round so let's see if we come up looking good you all right now go back over to the table and start prepping the Brandt the bamboo fire saw plenty of SAP in there for it to do that and it not to shake off that's SAP causing that ring of dust to hold on like that and spindle looks pretty good and like I said this isn't going to be enough tender for the bamboo fire saw let me scrape up a little bit more that should be enough and once this catches the amber and I get the a member established in here then we'll go to these pine needles for a bird's nest now let's cut this the bamboo fire saw it's all you need a top board and a bottom board so I think on my bottom board I'm going to cut it right here and you see I've used this as a bottom board before that's why that charring right there and right there okay but now this is going to be a top board so I'll drill a hole right here with my knife until it just starts to come through the other side I need to make this a little more narrow so I can sort of get a little bit of a chamfer on it now let's draw that and it's starting to come through right there now there needs to be a little bevel right here because this is when I want to run this across the bottom board I'm going to kick up a number and it's going to collect up inside of this bevel right here inside of this chamfer that I'm making so let me make just a little bit more of a chamfer in there and give it a little cavity to collect up into know if you can see that but there's just a little chamfer all the way around that hole now I'll make a little sort of groove on both sides of that board you'll see it'll become clear when I show you the bottom board now this bottom board we ride right in that groove right there so we want to take and sharpen this edge up till it's about butter-knife thickness something like that all right so now I'll take this tinder bundle put it on both sides of that hole right there and then I'll run this across that butter knife edge right there this would be up against the tree let me show you how I'll set you up at the tree and I'll explain more about it all right I usually do this off the other hip so I'm gonna go ahead and try it off of this hip this is our bottom board here's our knife edge I have it oriented up and there's the groove that we cut in the board to ride on that knife edge just to get started now everybody else that does this technique makes a little takes a strip of bamboo across there I just hold the tinder bundle in with my thumbs and what I'm what I'm trying to accomplish is is to I'm just going to take and heat it up and they're gonna keep going back and forth until I start seeing some char on here and I start making some smoke and then when I get ready to go for the amber I'll I'll select whichever part of this knife edge right here is good and black that's what I'll concentrate on the most and that's where I'll do several more strokes and get the Ember so and also another thing I like to do is to take my knife and support it up under here because like I said on the last video that I did on the bamboo fire saw that's the worst time in the world to be going hot and heavy and going for the Ember and then the the back of it slips out and you lose all that heat once again I'm not used to doing it off my left hip but I think I can let me set you back up at the table you see it now we're in the Sun or just over here let's try that well I'm just gonna have to just gonna have to be in the Sun I guess all right and that's all for before friction fire techniques that I know I really enjoy doing this turned out pretty good I appreciate you all joining me on this one wheel catch you on the next one there's the edge that we used we catch them on the next one
