[Music] hey lovely people thank you for tuning back into the channel this is a french provincial vanity i've had out in my storage unit for a couple months i've been on a pink kick so i decided to go and pull it out and get started i like to remove the handles first to go ahead and clean underneath the hardware and it makes it easier to clean the handles themselves when they are removed after the handles are removed i grab my current favorite cleaner and degreaser it's la's totally awesome cleaner i spray a little amount all over the piece use a sponge to scrub it and then use paper towel to wipe all the dirt and grime off for those of you turning in for the first time i've been flipping furniture for about eight years if you like seeing furniture flips you are in the right place so go ahead and hit that subscribe button if you haven't already the number one question i always get is why clean your piece if you're going to sand it if you go ahead and stand with first you're going to get all that dirt and grime and oil and sand it down into the wood which we don't want before painting also you go through less sandpaper if you clean first for part of my prep work i am using my new surf prep sander i purchased a 3x4 sander electrical sander with the vacuum attachments you can also purchase their vacuum system or attach it to a regular shop vac this allows you to sand inside with very little dust residue left over i was concentrating more on filming the right angle so you can see how the foam pad works while you sand so i totally forgot to turn my shop back on so you do see dust in this clip the foam pad in between the sandpaper and sander allow you to go into the detail and around the edges i am in love with my surf prep sander it makes my job of prep work so much easier i can sand pieces in about half a time with using my other sanders i did spend a pretty penny on it so if you don't do furniture on a regular basis it would be kind of a large investment but if you do furniture often i would definitely check into buying a surf prep sander typically i time lapse my videos and speed them up but i wanted to give you a better idea of the speed that i'm actually moving the sander so i left the video in regular time so after the entire surface that i'm going to paint is sanded i will grab a damp cloth to wipe off any remaining dust residue typically i spray my pieces with the drawers in so after i give the drawer a good wipe down i'll go ahead and put them all back into the vanity after the surface is dry i am ready to prime the primer i'm using is zinzer's bullseye one two three primer for all services i'm going to use my 3m accu spray gun to apply this primer so i did water it down 10 percent first before i attached it to my gun and started spraying when spraying primer paint and top coat with a paint gun it is best to use thinner layers that will require you to do more coats but if you do thicker less coats you have more chance of your paint dripping you can definitely still see the metallic gold showing through on the first coat of primer so i let that dry for two hours came back with a 400 grit piece of sandpaper lightly went over the piece wiped it clean with a lint-free cloth to remove any dust residue and then went over again with a second coat i repeated that whole process one more time so a total of three coats of primer drying two hours in between also lightly sanding with the 400 grit sandpaper and dusting off in between each coat after priming i typically let my pieces set overnight before painting my choice of chalk paint is bare chalk paint you can find it at home depot i am on a pink kick right now so i have this light pink color i don't know the exact color because the girl didn't give me the sticker on the top but i pour some into my container add some water thin it out to 10 for the paint gun make sure you stir until the water and paint are completely mixed together i don't strain my paint before i use because my lid has a built-in strainer snap the lid into place screw on the band and then attach the gun if you would like to see a better breakdown of my gun and how it works let me know down below in the comments i've been using the 3m accuspray gun for about a year and i love it i am also not a spokesperson for them i just let you know what works and what doesn't when it doesn't work all right for my first coat of paint i will go ahead and remove the drawers out of the body so i can kind of spray the frame around where the drawers are and again just reminding you that thinner coats are better it is more time consuming to do that but it's going to look better and you have a less chance of the paint collecting together and dripping somewhere all right after i have where the frame around the drawer goes i will grab the door and put it in and struggle to get it in and struggle the entire world is watching and i cannot get this right get the drawer in get it in there i gotta get closer so i can concentrate harder i'll finally there it goes no one saw that right so i've tried different methods of spraying with the drawers in so this is what works for me i put the drawers in and then i stagger them with a the middle drawer is a little bit further out than the top and then the third one's a little bit further out from that then i will take my spray gun and spray the top of each drawer and then turn my nozzle to where i can do vertical spraying and then do the sides unaligned i'll do both sides and then after that i will push the drawers all the way in and then go back with my gun with the horizontal setting and go back and forth across the face of the drawer i am sure there are other methods that work i have just found out that this is what works best for me i didn't use any speeding up of the video so you can kind of have a realistic idea of how long this process takes plus i don't know if i'm the only one out there but i really like watching painting videos it kind of is like therapeutic to me in a way to watch people paint a piece or whatever artistic thing they're doing though i forgot to mention earlier when you go to ferris website for the chalk paint it says to paint or roll it on and i noticed that so i emailed the company and i asked them why they don't recommend spraying it and they responded back to me saying that it just has they have not tested yet with spraying is the only reason why it's not listed on the website as an application method i have not had any issues spraying it though i let the paint sit for two hour grab my 400 grit sandpaper lightly went over the surface and then dusted it off with a clean lint-free cloth after thoroughly dusting off the piece i went back and added a second coat of the pink paint i let that dry for two hours lightly sanded wiped it off with a clean cloth and applied a third final layer of paint and let that set overnight the next morning i started with cleaning the handles i like to use warm water and dawn's this show just add some soap in there use an old toothbrush to scrub the handles getting in all the crevices to make sure you get all the dirt and grime out rinse them off really well and then set them aside to dry after the paint dried overnight i went back over it with my 400 grit sandpaper made sure to go over all the entire painted surface and ran my hand across it to make sure there weren't any rough bumps left in the paint dust the piece off next with my super fancy feather duster and then wipe it with a clean lint-free cloth to make sure there's absolutely no dust residue to add some sparkle to the vanity i decided to use some gold leafing to give it a unique and beautiful touch i chose the leafing in a rose gold color it comes in very thin pieces that are like foil and it has a kit that includes this water-based adhesive i'll make sure to put the link down the description for you all i used a cheap detail arts and craft brush to apply the adhesive the areas that i wanted to add the rose gold leafing i just painted on and you have to let it dry for about five to ten minutes until it gets a little tacky if you accidentally get some adhesive in an area that you don't want to you can use a damp paper towel to wipe it off [Music] after about five minutes i'll use my finger to touch an area to see if the adhesive feels tacky to me and then the fun really begins the rose gold leafing can be a little hard to handle because they are very thin sheets but you pull one up lay it over the tacking and kind of smooth it over usually the piece is bigger than the area that you add the adhesive so you just press it down make sure that the gold leaf or the rose gold leaf is in all the areas that you have adhesive and you can rip it off and move it over press it down and just repeat that process until your whole piece of gold leaf is used the metal leafing really likes to stick to the adhesive so make sure that you don't have any on your fingertips or that's what it will stick to keep my fingertips glue free i will keep a bowl of water and a towel close by so i can wipe them off constantly the rose gold leafing is so pretty i kind of went nuts with it i went around the trim around the top of the vanity around the trim on the drawers the handles around the mirror on the feet i put it everywhere because i love it i mean a girl can never have too much sparkle right the directions on the bottle say that the adhesive takes about 30 minutes to dry it was really rainy and humid that day so i went ahead and let the handles and all the rose gold leafing settle for about an hour before moving on to the next step after the glue is dry grab a clean paint brush and just knock off all the extra debris and pieces that are hanging off this gets kind of messy because stuff goes everywhere all this sparkle flying around everywhere makes me feel like i'm at a new year's eve party i did have to clean my workshop to remove all the rose gold leafing and then i put the drawers back in and added the handles this piece is really starting to come together for my top coat i am using modern masters master clear in the satin finish typically i put this on with a damp sponge but i want that factory like finish so i'm going to use my 3m accu spray gun i pour 12 ounces of the master clear into my cup and then use my tablespoon to do a tablespoon of tap water and then a little bit more so i'm thinning this out by 10 percent so i can spray it through my gun after adding the water make sure to thoroughly mix so the top coat and water become one liquid together anytime i am using a metallic base paint or a product with a shimmer effect modern masters master clear is my choice of top coat it has uv protection so you have to worry about your piece yellowing and offers durable protection without dimming the shimmer of your metallics i top coat the drawers the same way i paint them i do the tops of the drawers the sides press the drawers in and then do the faces of the drawer for the first layer of top coat i do spray a thin layer and allow that to dry master clear is dry to the touch in 30 minutes but there is a two hour waiting time between layers after two hours i lightly go over the piece again with my 400 grit sandpaper just to remove any rough bumps from spraying wipe off the piece with a clean lint-free cloth before applying the second coat for my second coat of top coat i'm going to apply a much thicker coat in order to obtain that i move my gun at a much slower pace so there is a solid coverage of the master clear when spraying the master clear thicker it does appear milky but will dry clear i allow this final coat of protection to dry overnight the cushion on the stool vanity came with this yellow gross material so i'm going to remove that i had to remove the staples from the underside and then use my scissors to cut the buttons off the top before i could remove the material that will definitely get thrown in the trash i found this cute pink floral material from hobby lobby i lay the material over the cushion and cut about a couple inches around use my staple gun to staple the new material on make sure to tug the material a little bit before you staple so you get a nice snug finish for the corners i fold neatly tug it back and then staple it into place after the new material is thoroughly attached i grab my scissors and trim any excess material new upholstery is exactly what this stool needed now it's time to put everything together here's a quick reminder of our before and are after the rose gold leafing was a mess but it just gave this piece a beautiful touch it is unique and perfect for any girl's room i hope you all really enjoyed this video and found it helpful if you would have done something different let me know down below in the comments i want to know please like subscribe hit the bell and until next time
