Free Fight: Chris Weidman vs Lyoto Machida | UFC 175, 2014

[Applause] we are underway southpaw Machida and the dark trunks blue and white trunks for the champion Chris Weidman right away Weidman opens up with kicks three in a row very interesting [Applause] I've been very confident with his skills everywhere in a fighter who's work diligently to be a better striker he bettered submissions he was already in it's excellent recipe yeah he's deceptively good at distance Mike it's one of the things about him the way he moves in and out before he commits to striking very good at distance we once said before go charging in on lyoto machida is like running into a wood chipper you gotta be careful how you approach lyoto machida a man you cannot emulate in camp well that's why I was shocked that right away he was attacking with kicks and the odo yet to open up kind of leo toes game plant most times Joey feels it out he tries to see the openings and then attacks well it could be that with opening up the strategy could be with these kicks that he wants the odo to attempt to counter and then that is where he's going to initiate the takedown from got it there's the cup exactly what we thought right away he's deep in on a single but Liotta for Jones very nicely but as we suspected that was probably the strategy caught the leg took him down for just a split second though so look for Leo to be far more judicious with his kicks now nice inside kick by the champion Weidman again that time ochita walked into him cut it off leo toe just missed with that straight loud long left of Weidman clips the chin of lyoto machida so what Chris wants to do cut off the Octagon Joe another good kick and leo toe is trying to catch him as he throws that kick timing with that left hand but it's been unable to time it correctly so far but tremendous pressure by Weidman i've been switched his stance for a moment Ryota was circling away from the left leg this is wiseman style constant pressure staying on top of you and it makes it very difficult for a guy like Leo de to set up the counter again with a kick at two in a row Weidman's never been out struck in his professional career he's off to a good start here against Machida [Music] the two fights against Anderson zero talented with that left man to clean a to kick first though both ended early Weidman's been scheduled many times for five he's never gone the five round distance in fact he hasn't gone past the second round job he ought to look for that high kick though but he was a bit out of balance yodels straightened hair again yep he timed that kick snuck in on it but missed with the counter not there just over bended on the clock in round one nachita lead uppercut nothing there either [Applause] Leo doe is having a bit of a problem with the pressure mic [Applause] whistles humming that's what Chris said through Anderson Silva off as well through a kick to the body Chris caught it from the odo got his leg back 30 [Music] and Chris is an undefeated fighter and it carries the confidence and bravado of one not arrogant but confident final seconds just getting out of harm's way was machito of that right hand [Music] punch there's a nice leg kick by Weidman and there's a counter that caught Weidman clean and there's another one tried to tag him with the right but fell a bit short round two nice inside leg kick by Machida ray Longo very pleased with Weidman's performance thus far [Applause] the elusiveness the unorthodox attack longtime teammates Anderson Silva lyoto machida can be similar times that cake blocked by Chris Weidman begin s Weidman's corner was saying the way he's backing up and moving he can't win a fight like that keep the pressure on him we'll get him he said we'll get very confident corner of Chris Weidman as you and I talked about that high praise many many years ago it's short left landed thereby Weidman again wide when trying to be the aggressor Liotta backpedals but again Weidman claims the center of the Octagon after every one of these exchanges leo doe can't get his back away from the cage if you noticed this has been the trend and the first and the second round wide been controlling the center giving Leo two very little room to move backwards forcing him to sort of run to get to the sides good counter right over the top by Whiteman not that good kick to the body by lay different than what he did with Anderson to to take him out of his game but his pressure is most certainly relentless no question leo toes got to do something to try to claim the center give himself some more space one thing Leo dough does very well he covers ground he's in and out as good as anybody but we haven't seen it yet the Whiteman limits your movement so severely when a fighter realized here's good for Liotta how long can he hold it right rich girl has the nice inside leg kick but slowly but surely Chris starts to pressure him and get him back to that cage again macchina trying to get in a little bit the more they can stand like this the more Machida can get comfortable Chris keeping a hand in his face at all times be at the lead right from the southpaw or the left from the Orthodox there it is there here's again yeah Leo tried to leap in with that right hand but it did not land clean jumping front kick by Whiteman and again claims the center of the cage 21 career wins for the former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida wide went a perfect 11 and OH seven and OH in the UFC and Joe that's worthy of mention for flights into your pro career and you fighting in the UFC yeah I mean he's been pretty exceptional right off the bat in one of those pro victories before the UFC was a knockout victory over Uriah Hall yep I mean he's been pretty awesome pretty quick see who's landing at a better percentage thus far it is lyoto machida good left over the top by Leo toe but more punches have landed from Chris Weidman accuracy is good Alioto is kind of up there's the shot again this time he's got him down about the frequency of his strikes and the fan wiping on top here final minute of brown to the right in front of Chris Weidman's corner an excellent place for Weidman to be on top and together you can hear Matt Serra pretty much anywhere final 30 of the round number two here and here comes the ground-and-pound by Chris Weidman the others in trouble this is where Chris is bigger and this round that left kick to the body particularly effective because of the differences in their stances Chris being Orthodox in his approach in Leo no fighting for the southpaw position it opens up that back power kick to the body stuff again Kenny nope at that time big takedown for the champion second of the fight for Chris Weidman right into the guard of the cheetah Machida with his feet on the hips TV a push off as he pushes off he's got to be careful about Weidman's leg attacks [Applause] a longtime Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt lyoto machida [Applause] to annoy at 185 [Applause] seven time Machida has been scheduled for five rounds he's gone the distance twice why man if he gets his left leg free is going to try to take the back of the cheetah he's holding on with the over-under now he's got the back the Cheetahs going to try to pop that right shoulder out and slip out big knee by widening up then the autos free lyoto machida Chris Weidman just past the midway point of this title fight excellent combination by the champion a lot of pressure now coming from Weidman that is one of his demos is that relentless pressure right hand and Leo toe spray again there's a cut that was the punch that Weidman landed in that exchange he landed another big right hand and a left behind it a lot of time to work the auto with a nice speed of the body and Weidman takes him down again he is the bigger middleweight and as we said before Joe even if they were meeting at 2:05 I think still wipin would be the bigger of the two men yeah absolutely he's enormous for a middle way yeah it's not an easy cut for him at all and he was being interviewed yesterday you could see the strain on his face it's a hard way cut for sure for sure and he's got Leo toes back once more and he's opened up the cut with that right hand that you talked about a minute on the clock here in round three and they're up again and down again [Applause] Lyoto was trying to look up to check the clock as well as protect himself 45 seconds he's at from his corner and he takes a look at hot be el cordero leo no saying these guys are using Weidman saying that Leo doe has his fingers and widens gloves and now Wyden is covering up the nose of the Odom ochita under 30 Lyoto trying to get up again he's out the odo is a bloody mess yup and he's getting fatter [Applause] ten seconds watch for a potential head kick yeah you can see I'm trying to set something up to a left side see their kicker and need there to the kick especially into the round he didn't have to worry about being taken dollars but there's the right hand elbow on the cheetah but a hard right hand by the champion and here's a huge takedown by Weisman Leo doe so far with no answer to the attack of Chris Weidman and this by far as deep as Weidman has gone in his professional career previously hadn't gone past the second round four times scheduled for five rounds championship rounds Machida and Weidman for the belt at 185 a little tape hanging out of the right glove of Chris Weidman he doesn't want to give Leo toe any time to get things started Joe Machida has to know that the judges had favored Weidman thus far and there's only two rounds left yeah he's got to win my stoppage one way or another kick the submission a punch nice one to the body those do damage generally the cheetah absorbs fewer strikes that pretty much anybody and UFC history Weidman's tagged him a lot tonight good need in the body by Weidman that exchange there you see the numbers to validate what we were just talking about there you go Machida caught him a left turned up the intensity on that last combination [Music] he attempted that Neeb of Weidman caught him and come down again for now wide base by Machida trying to work his way back up beautiful job i'ma cheetah springing out of there the Odo's done some things very good Joe but he's not been able to gain the momentum from Chris wife good left up by Leo the baby that's to start [Applause] as we know one thing he's never out of the fight he's definitely not out if he could do that absolutely and remember Weidman although he trying to misty legitly comes together to fight what the shots is missed there for the first time big deep breaths being taken by Chris Weidman but she died can attack them again - Tara Potter Weidman brings him in which means he wants him out the others got a lot of time to work here there goes that momentum we're talking about [Applause] looking for the high kick good one to the body karate kids starting to light up [Applause] and then I go on to the body that's been his best strike that kicked to the body tag them again with the left hand a lot of confidence from the former light heavyweight champion he's doing a great job of keeping Weidman guessing as to whether or not it's going to be that kick or that left hand there's the left hand again go to the mouth of Chris Weidman hold put a little bit now breathing much heavier than earlier in this fight uncharted waters for the All American [Applause] over the top no guns by lyoto machida came out he's fired just over a minute now in round four the Brazilians become hopeful [Applause] we've seen that before and it works pretty well [Applause] Ryota knocking out Randy Couture in Toronto with that front kick trying to join the tour and BJ Penn as the only man to ever win a UFC belt in two weight classes spanked deep shot by Weidman stop so far by Machida very nice fun Machida leo doe has stuffed 8 of 12 takedown to town a lot of pressure from the dragon Yoda Matina attacking Chris Weidman [Applause] Loganlea odo we got ourselves a plan big left hand on the buzzer they're on their feet here inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center let's take a look at some of this ashens gold there's a left hook that clip Weidman there's a right hand that glanced off the shoulder and there's a clean right hand and that's the end of the round a left hand on the job fifth and final round usually inside leg kick but a Machida again with the body body Weidman switches his stand-up act anymore badly bruised on that under that right arm right on the ribcage right with those tits keep landing a lot of support for the Brazilian mechina now controlling the center of the Octagon like that one punch last round Joey we talked about now the momentum is with Machida but he might need to stop this fight to win well I think he does he needs that or he needs a huge round yeah that would be scored a 10-8 round and that would just give him a draw four minutes remain Lyoto right there in his face [Applause] [Music] [Applause] pull his left hand over the top by Machida [Applause] watch for that left knee of Machida we got to stuff another one excellent takedown defense so far we have to fill job I'm achieving sound yeah and you'll be on all bye bro Ryota was the pressure of the two fighters well I think he did some real damage in that fourth round Mike how big of a round was that and this is also where the week cutting factor comes in with vibin big right hand by Whiteman lyonnel shakes it off the cheetah over the top Weidman pressuring which is what ray Longo said you have to continue to do under three what a great title fight [Applause] why not tackle them the cheetah coming forward though watch out for the knee [Applause] midway point of the fifth and final round nice leg kick by Weidman Wow Chris's hands were low though Joe we all will just miss their nice knee by widening turn and bite hand nicely done Chris Weidman now the autos really busted up by the left eye - it was a really good elbow stepped into that elbow nice left the auto still game under two [Applause] but cheetah at 40 G H and L taking down fifth of the fight for the champion [Applause] many have been stopped but this one might be the biggest of the fight [Applause] unless the owner were to pull an Anderson Silva you know he'd rather be on the feet still I've been looking to pressure and get that right leg out of the guard he's sliding over he's going to mount he's going to take the back of the cheetah beautiful job at securing ball clubs but she is scrambling to try to get out of that position we've lied him and holding him in place now he's gonna flatten him out 50 seconds Lyoto trying to get free trying to get back to his face he can't stand this spot though neodo up can he get out not much time left from the chena though that was a huge minute in which Weidman had top position Joe a huge minute and a lot of domination by Weidling their excellent punches the takedown this is around he needed a he's began teaming second mechina trying to pull off a miracle piratinha eight seconds Machida firing away they go the distance what a fight what a fight what Man, Weidman was so damn good.

Part of his downfall certainly came as a byproduct of stiff competition (and I've seen other suggest USADA played a part), but he was so damn good. There is a marked difference in the fluidity of his movement during his run vs what we see now.
