Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
It survived a devastating earthquake and fire in 1923 and Wright's use of water in the design gave survivors some much needed fresh water in the aftermath of the disaster. It really is a loss that the Imperial Hotel is gone.
Wright gets a reputation for being overrated and that his buildings often fail but he was pushing the cutting edge and sometimes his designs exceeded the available technology. If you haven't been to any of his buildings do yourself a favor and go.
Nice, never seen this before. The Metropolitan Museum in NYC has some fragments of this structure displayed in their pretty good Wright section.
This is astonishing. I love Wright's work, but I've never heard of this place. Why on God's blue pearl would they knock this place down? Did anybody think to at least salvage some of the ornamentation? What a loss.
Wonderful rendering! Thank you so much for posting this! I have looked through a lot of FLW books over the year and never seen anything that so well communicated his design before.
Iβve always loved Wrightβs work, but Iβd never heard of this before. Thanks for sharing this, it was beautiful.
