Fr. Richard Heilman's Sermon for Saturday March 5, 2022

another glorious evening last night striving for holiness and um i see some people at my table we had a beautiful discussion last night one of the things i shared is that i just had dinner with one of my priest friends and out of the clear blue he said you know uh for whatever reason and and he i think he was just concerned about my health he he said last september 8th he started praying for me and the way he did that was by giving up candy and he didn't tell me and i remember sitting there we were over at delaney's going you know i can't say for sure but that's just about the day that i became all uh full of zeal for developing uh what's now called the peace to strength prayer journal and the 90 days to peace and uh and i what did i advocate i advocated that we have be healthy spiritually and physically i know since that time i've lost 30 or 40 pounds and i feel great except i'm sore from lifting weights but uh that's a good kind of sore you know the point though is that we're called to uh extend ourselves uh to those who are spiritually sick or physically sick but to help those in need i just talked with another friend who's been praying for her sister and all of a sudden out of the clear blue her sister says whatever you found i want it the the joy that you have the bounce in your step the twinkle in your eye i don't have that i want it you know we're called to reach out to to extend our love but even to plug ourselves into people around us like we plug into god to be the conduits of his supernatural grace to other people we do that through prayer fasting we do that through acts of mortification we do that through acts of kindness that's what the first reading was all about you know those who extend themselves to the poor and the needy they will have their prayers heard where we extend ourselves in love when we reveal that god is truly within us and when god is truly within us it becomes our everything to want to share that love especially with those who are sick or spiritually sick and we ask god to help them we become selfless lovers to the world and then we know that life is worth living please stand
