okay hello i know everyone was absolutely rattled by my wine glass in the last video whether it was how i was holding it or the free bird spirit with which i swung it around everyone was complaining so today i have a daiquiri and guys i'm not gonna put in clips of me drinking it i don't know like what do you want like i'm not are you happy now today i want to talk about a moment that kind of ruled my childhood and dominated my thoughts for like at least a week so let's take it back to the good old days you're me you have a bedroom completely modeled after a hannah montana paint pamphlet from lowe's selena gomez's awesome haircut inspires you to take to the shears yourself after your mom refused to give you bangs but then you got like embarrassed so you kind of just cut the hair really short to where it was like flush with your head and one day you boot up your computer bypass safe startup mode log into youtube to see your two faves fighting this can't be so what did happen walk with me [Music] [Applause] the timeline begins in 2002 demi lovato and selena gomez both auditioned for barney they meet each other in line at the auditions and then when they go on to star on the show together they became really close friends their moms became really close so they just forged a lifelong friendship in 2007 they both started getting small roles on disney channel selena was also guest starring on hannah montana as a pop star named michaela she also filmed pilots for two different spin-off shows one of them was called arwyn zach and cody spinoff and stevie sanchez a lizzie mcguire spin-off as i'm sure you can tell these shows flopped but they say third time's a charm and selena auditioned for disney channel's wizards of waverly place and she was cast as lead role alex russo meanwhile the bestie demi was starring in the disney short as the bell rings which helped her to secure roles on the new show sunny with a chance and the movie camp rock they were best friends who found themselves rising to stardom on disney channel it was like they were the new kids at school and every school has a queen bee right the undeniable hbic on disney channel at this time was miley cyrus when miley was only 13 years old she began filming for the new disney show hannah montana she originally auditioned for the role of the best friend but when they saw her dance and heard her sing they decided to give her the lead and they liked the chemistry between her and her dad who ran the lines with her so much that they cast him as the dad and gave the titular character hannah montana miley's name which if you didn't know is technically a nickname her legal name is destiny hope cyrus when hannah montana premiered in march 2006 it drew the biggest audience disney channel had ever experienced quickly the show became one of the highest rated on basic cable miley was thrust into superstardom being called a teen idol and your standard hpic always has a just as in demand guy on her arm right ellie's was the youngest member of the very popular and still growing band the jonas brothers nick jonas nick was the it guy at the time every little girl wanted to be with him and every little girl loved or wanted to be miley or hannah montana so it was just a match made in heaven she says when they first met in summer of 2006 he put his hand out for a handshake and she was like i'm a hugger and then when they went in for the hug she was like i hate your shirt because it was like scratchy and the rest was history in 2007 their relationship started to get more serious they were seen out in public a lot and the jonas brothers guest starred on an episode of hannah montana which became one of the highest rated episodes of any show on disney channel they were a disney power couple if there ever was one a modern britney and justin for the tweeny boppers in october of that year 14 going on 15 year old miley embarked on her debut concert tour the best of both worlds if you're around my age and anything like me you were absolutely dying to go to the show not only would you see miley but you saw hannah and the jonas brothers but the ticket sold out so quickly needless to say this tour was highly anticipated for both fans of miley and the jonas brothers between which i'm sure there was a lot of crossover while on tour though one of miley's friends vanessa who she met during a visit to a hospital died of cystic fibrosis at only 12 years old because miley was out on tour she couldn't go see her in the hospital and it really hurt her she said nick helped her a lot at this time he said she needed to pull herself together and she admitted he was right after all she was on tour to make her fans happy and what would make them happiest is seeing a smiling miley out there every night looking not only happy to be performing but happy in her relationship with nick perhaps though all this pressure was not good for a high school freshman age relationship while in connecticut on the best of both worlds tour on december 19 2007 nick and miley broke up and if you've had a high school breakup you know it feels like the end of the world miley wasn't allowed to experience this like a normal teen she had to keep performing every night and with him for that matter and she had to go on new year's rock and eve with them which seems awkward joe was giving a little brendon yuri tease though presumably before this breakup miley was spending all of her time on tour with her boyfriend so when they broke up she was alone similarly one of miley's backup dancers was experiencing a similar heartbreak a tiff with a close friend and they sort of fell perfectly into each other's lives this friend was mandy giroud now something that i must note here is that miley's still 15 at this time and mandy had just turned 21 at the end of december so this friendship was a bit controversial after spending what miley recounts as a month straight of crying miley moved into the next stage of her breakup rebellion when she and nick were together he wanted her to get highlights and she did and she liked them and she took a lot of interest in her appearance and trying to look pretty so when they break up miley decides she wants to look hardcore instead she dyes her hair black dresses the smidge more scandalous and turns up the eyeliner while this does of course make miley look totally badass it lets the tabloids in on something that they can't get enough of child star rebellion which paired with the 21 year old best friend and a purity ring it was clear miley was starting to go bad girl everyone started getting on her case trying to dig up any little bit of dirt that they could it was only a matter of time before in january 2008 miley's myspace account is hacked some photos of her in a bikini with her friends in a bathtub and one that i'm not showing on here because she's like in a like a beater and underwear and she was 15. and all the blogs and major publications were hosting this photo of a child in her underwear and perverts literally were looking at it i had to see the comments unfortunately so please y'all just use some discretion and don't look up this photo i've shown you and i will continue to show you all the important ones that aren't sexually explicit photos of a child now come along 2008 also starts what many like to refer to as the golden age of youtube around this time way more people were joining youtube and the overall volume of content being uploaded to the platform was growing like a weed so when demi and selena are casting their new disney channel original movie princess protection program they start a youtube channel likely to promote the movie the name of it is the real demi lovato aka demi and selena they described it as vlog podcast content which in their case pretty much meant talking answering fan questions making inside jokes in front of the world teenager not long after that miley and mandy also joined the long list of people who began posting to youtube in 2008 their videos were a similar format to the demi and selena show a format that let's be honest here can only really be successful if you're famous already except their shows called the miley and mandy show and something cannabis related was happening on their show yeah hi drizzy kitty and debbie mobinopolis oh that's my jokes will be really funny if i can spit it out with miley's constant scandals and the growing popularity of demi and selena it begged the question whether miley was out and demi and selena were in people were constantly comparing miley and demi miley and selena and on top of that miley's first love who she just spent a month straight crying over was now rumored to be dating selena and it wasn't like miley or fans of the relationship were over him either miley was always spotted wearing his diabetes dog tag and it was only a matter of time before the iconic moment that we all know and love on march 12 2008 demi and selena uploaded a seemingly innocent video coming in at 2 minutes and 25 seconds titled demi lovato and selena gomez update yo yo yo yeah i said it dwight's got a problem with that wow i got this really cool shirt today and it made me want to give a shout out to my boys who's that [Music] a lot of you have been saying that um i've been wearing a lot of makeup which is you know it's all right i agree but um this is this is a lot and this is how i used to wear it like back in the day in my all black all dark makeup days yeah but i guess um you guys don't like that anymore jimmy look at me it's okay look at me let me look at me do you have anything on my teeth no do i have anything in mind no you sure yeah cause that's a trick question because i fixed my gap well jimmy had a gap not on his bell rings i thought they digitally added that because that would make sense only two days later miley and mandy upload a video to their channel titled the miley and mandy show is my makeup too dark where they basically just repeat and laugh at everything that demi and selena said in their video yo yo yo yeah i said it twice got a problem with that yeah i do you don't know why why you got a gap back i got it yeah i got back in the day i got it fit stop okay so listen what's up i got a really emo shirt today emo yeah like emo amazing emo [Music] some people say my makeup's too dark and like i don't really see it so wait look at me look at me yeah does something my teeth no do i no you're good that wasn't your question oh that was a trick question no that was no that was a trick question that's not fair that's not cool that wasn't that wasn't funny mandy it was a trick question we don't do trick questions on our show got it yeah we don't do those you don't know why why you don't know why why you know why because people can get their feelings hurt now i'm not gonna sit here and act like i didn't think it was funny when it happened and that i still don't think it's kind of funny it's a classic tale of old flame hate's new flame except just on the internet for the world to see and regardless of how funny nine-year-old me or miley and mandy thought it was it was quite a controversy quickly the tide began to shift against miley while the general public rooted for her in the leaked photo scandal aside from creeps like bill o'reilly people generally were of the opinion that the photos were on par with the photo habits of an average 15 year old so people were on her side but while miley had been busy trying to clean up her reputation selena and demi were out here winning people over with their relatability and girl next door friendliness so when miley came back to the platform to make fun of them people didn't take too kindly to it now before you all lock in your opinions may i just say is this not just a modern lindsey and hillary hillary and her friends threatened physical violence but y'all took her aside oh yeah totally fine but the moment when most people turned on miley was april 2008 a 19 year old man from tennessee who went by the screen name trainwreck2k8 hacked 15 year old miley's gmail and leaked several photos of her half naked oh guys i realized that this is the same guy that did the hack of the myspace like that hack is how he got her email which was message me baby at gmail.com or something and then her password which was loca 92 and he hacked her email on december 7th 2007 and he just keeps releasing more and more photos from that i think and every time people comment and are like hasn't she learned from last time but i'm pretty sure they're all from the same hack reportedly the photos were attached to emails to nick jonas and included some sexting it literally upsets my stomach to imagine 15 year old sexting surely you'd think oh my god a 19 year old a high school graduate if you will hacked into the email of a high school freshman age girl and sold photos of her on the basis that they were sexually provocative hmm that sounds like something that sounds like pornography well at least i would think that but no the general consensus among the misogynistic 2008 internet was that miley was disgusting and she had no place being on a children's show because she was not a good role model she was gonna make kids think sex was okay with a blasphemy and i might do an entire video on miley cyrus so i'll go more in depth into this and my very strong opinions about it then but you just need to know that right now that everyone was like girl did you forget we're doing purity but the situation was not going to be getting any better for miley any time soon in april she shot for the cover of vanity fair with the legendary photographer annie leibowitz miley is shown on the cover exposing her bare back covered in the front by a large sheet again i'll talk about this more in depth on my miley video but it's a bit inappropriate and like yeah i see what the vision was it's supposed to be stripped down in the sense that miley's hardly wearing makeup and she's covered by a sheet in contrast to her every day which is full makeup wig crazy disney outfit yadda yadda yadda but at the end of the day she is 15 years old and the same kind of vibe could have been achieved if they shot her from the front and she's covered up by a big sheet and she's not wearing makeup but her hair is messy or something like and miley apologized except for the photos that got leaked because she was like they were private photos so y'all weren't even supposed to see him in the first place which i agree it's like i don't understand how she was seen as the bad guy when a grown man hacked a young girl's email and got these photos but again i'm saving that for a miley video and she's since i think within the last year come out and retracted that apology by the way only a couple weeks later the hacker releases more photos from the december 7th hack and insinuates that he has even racier photos that he'll be selling to the highest bidder one of the more interesting things about this lake is this shirt [Music] miley continued to apologize but also she said that she didn't think her fans would be too upset because they see her mess up and they know it's okay to make mistakes and she thinks her example is helpful for people to see how to grow from what could be a really humiliating situation she also prepared her fans for her first non-disney album breakout she said it was gonna be more grown up and it would help paint a clearer picture for everyone of what she'd been through in the last year so while miley's going through this selena's on the up and up she's signed with hollywood records and enters a partnership with xyz films and she was slated to do two movies one of them titled what boys want where she can read the mind of boys wait another one was a film adaptation of the hit 2007 why a novel 13 reasons why neither made it past the idea stage at least not with selena on june 17th miley released the lead single from breakout titled seven things this song rage is about a guy who loves her but likes another girl has jerk friends and she hates him but she loves him which she hates and the song was obviously rumored to be about nick jonas two days later the jonas brothers released their new song burning up which sings about meeting a girl and there's just an undeniable connection between you immediately and this fired everyone up and it's widely believed that this song is about miley so whoopsie the very next day the music video is released and guess who makes a cameo one week later miley 7 things music video premieres on abc and it miley holds up a photo of her and nick she's wearing his dog tag and she and a bunch of tweens are just jumping around and being angry about their boyfriends it's a classic and it becomes the most watched music related video on youtube and stays there until 2010 when lady gaga releases bad romance nick denies the song bang about him but we all know it's about him come on in august at the teen choice awards while miley was performing seven things she ran over by selena for a little crowd work this of course was interpreted as being messy there were photos of miley celina and demi from that night strategically taken while the jonas brothers were away from their seats which were near selena and demi on august 11th kevin is photographed wearing a team demi and selena's shirt and while this is happening demi and joe jonas's movie camp rock premieres on disney channel and she signs with hollywood records there are also rumors at this time that miley wants out of hannah montana and that she's acting out on purpose to get fired she's being seen out with her 20 year old boyfriend justin gaston she was 15 and he was 20. and now selena was being adored by young girls in the same way miley was on her show she played cool girl that didn't care she was about to get a band and she had the coveted boyfriend nick jonas now they weren't outright confirmed to be dating at this time but listen to this in an interview with twist magazine selena said while we were slow dancing my crush and i had our first kiss after i leaned back and said you cheated and he said why and i said i don't kiss on the first date and he said well i never really play by the rules and then in an interview to girls life magazine nick jonas said on one date this girl said to me i don't kiss on the first date so i said i don't follow the rules the magazines were looking a lot like this at the time there were a lot of polls about whether demi and selena were better than miley and mandy who was the best disney role model whether selena was better than miley now and like and miley was clearly dying to get out of this age range anyway and she had become friends with taylor swift who was joe jonas's ex at this point so you see where we are then the dramas kind of reignited in the tabloids at least when taylor swift drops her song forever and always that's allegedly about joe jonas and then selena comes out in an interview and says when i have a breakup i don't have to write a song about it and then miley allegedly sends a nasty email to selena according to the national enquirer which you know i don't know how reliable that is apparently miley sent a nasty email to selena saying that eventually she'd be an ex just like her and taylor and they'd be there to give her a tissue and write a song with her in early 2009 miley and nick are reportedly a little flirty at the golden globes which selena did not attend and at the hotel for dogs premiere when selena was asked if she and nick were still together she said i've been shunned and i've been doing the dating game and it's my turn now that is so cryptic i literally don't know what that's supposed to mean now that nick and selena are broken up we see demi selena miley and miley's boyfriend justin all out to eat together so we may finally know peace allegedly after this dinner though miley was super mad at selena because she was like making googly eyes at justin the whole time so but i don't know i feel like she probably shouldn't have worried that anyone wanted her elderly man until miley and justin break up and miley is right back to hanging out with nick i don't know how i forgot to record this but in summer of 2009 miley demi selena and the jonas brothers all sang a song together and of course had an accompanying music video for disney's friends for change which was disney's green psas that they would do and of course this is iconic because they're all singing about friendship and love and they're all exes in front of me so in june miley and nick write and record a song together titled before the storm they both said this process was really cathartic for them and though many rumors of them getting back together were flying around miley was also filming for her movie the last song at this time which is where she met liam who she later married so the nick and miley chapter closes for good in 2010 nick and selena are back together but unfortunately their busy schedules make it difficult to spend time together and they break up again also in 2010 miley and justin bieber perform his song overboard together and they're seen together and there are a slew of rumors that they're hooking up but in the behind the scenes footage it really seems like she was not feeling him but they're not seen together at all anymore after selena and justin start dating so that led people to believe that selena and miley were not as cool as they've been letting on add to this that they weren't ever seen hanging out but justin's dad tweeted this while him and selena were still dating and you may be thinking where's mandy good question after her dance crew with miley which no i didn't forget it happened i'm just not mentioning it because it's completely irrelevant to the story mandy is encouraged by miley to audition for the group the beach girls which was managed by kris jenner and they went kind of nowhere but it's the effort that counts right the drama as a conservative riley mandy demi and selena was pretty much over there are some shady tweets and instagram posts from later down the road but i'll address that at another time my overall opinion on this drama what else do you expect when you constantly compare teenage girls to each other granted this is what they expected and it's exactly what they wanted so but i can see it from miley mandy's perspective and i can see it from selena and demi's perspective and i think it's just a good old-fashioned teen girl brawl and who doesn't love one of those the most important thing though is that they've all made up especially during quarantine i feel like going live with each other was good for them selena and miley have both said that there never was a feud it was just silly boy drama silly boy drama that i managed to get an
