what do you do with this leftover piece i mean i don't want to throw that away i can do something with it so let's figure out how to do that [Music] sometimes when i use some handle material i have leftovers um like this really nice piece of stabilized wood from mad scientist knife scales and when i use it i'll end up cutting something out and i'll have leftover so what do i want to do with that leftover i usually put it in my scrap bin for later on and then i go looking for some wood you know commiserate and i was like i don't want to use that i don't want to use that so let me show you how i overcome that problem by taking several pieces of wood putting them back together in a manner that i like and it looks good in using them this is one i've already glued up so this is some african blackwood had a little chunk and this is some really nice curly maple uh and i had an enough to make nothing and i had enough to make nothing so what i did was i glued them together i glued them on a liner and they're going to be beautiful when i'm done i'm not shaping this today i'm just going to show you how i stick some wood together to make one good big chunk and i'm going to use scraps so let's go look and do the scrap bins see what we got um uh the the idea is gonna be a it's gonna be a hidden tang for this chef's knife that i'm gonna make this is adcrv integral chef's knife so let's find some wood that we can use here um don't shoot pictures of the top of my head matt okay um that's getting heavy uh let's see i'm gonna dump some right under there oh spider is there a spider in there i've been your roommate all these years and now you just crushed me all right there's all kind of goodies in here let's see what we've got curly maple i don't know what that is some black wood that's kind of pretty too that looks like i'm gonna i know that's nice that real when you see curly maple and you can see that the machine was sharp you know the planter but it but it tears it like that that's some deep curl that's a nice deep curl piece too some black wood black african blackwood's one of my favorites there's a piece of old westinghouse micarta i don't know what the big deal is with it but people like it that's some nice crazy stuff i use it looks like sherbet oh no there's something in there that we can use and just dig through it's like why would the better stuff be on the bottom i don't know look at that that's a whole chunk in there i could just use like it is but it always seems like the better stuff is deeper in there that is not even wood that's tape i'm just going to pull some pieces out that i like the way they look like those throw that in there i like that chunk keep we'll collect enough of it to what's that oh it's black one this says free free alex so this is free alex thank you it was free to alex or maybe free from alex i don't know burly burly on the outside burly on the inside a piece of pine i'm sorry it's a bigger chunk of koa we'll use that too so we're getting our pieces together that we're going to need and i'm sure that the best stuff is on the bottom and i can't get to that obviously right always on the bottom this looks like a complete set of scales but some bean head i think of it as a lima bean so i have gathered from across the globe different pieces of wood okay that's not true i just got them out of the wood scrap can so instead of using a big chunk like that or if i did use a big chunk like that and i have the leftover pieces these are some of the leftover pieces i got all kind of wood here let's lay some of this stuff out hmm that's really nice looking right there i'm liking that i like that piece like that iron wood i like that koa i always like black wood african black wood and koa gorgeous always like curly maple this is a piece it has um boy there's a lot of blah going on in there maybe that should go back in the scrap pile oh look at that now that's killer that's got some killer curly in it both sides all right let us construct a piece of awesome handle material that will go on this chef's knife i like that piece let's mix it with some dark maybe this so we got some black wood and we got some this curly maple this curly koa it's another chunk of curly koa it's pretty curly all the way around let's see let's sand this a little bit so i can get a better look at it okay i'm gonna do all the sides of it just so i can see what it really looks like funny thing about wd-40 i don't know what it's good for but it's good for everything it's not like specifically like you know what do you do to protect from rust i don't know use this what do you do to shine up the wood to see what it looks like oh that's pretty so that is not anything this set is kind of pretty maybe anymore it's going to spray on a rag blah blah blah stunning blah okay that will go back into the scrap box um let's see this one yeah yeah all set okay that's a candidate nice nice that's also good can this one too killer killer good you know what i like about this oh that's beautiful it's just dark dark african blackwood is one of my favorites this has got some nice and i like to do a contrast i like to have maybe some of the black wood and some of this and we'll use that piece of ironwood let's see what that looks like ironwood's got a weird chatoyance to it even if the wood's not very figured it's got some nice nice bling going on in there hmm let's see i'm just going to set this over here sometimes it's like too much decision to make i can't make a decision too much that's nice that's nice what if i use some of this and we're going to put that back i decided i'm eliminating process of elimination this is kind of nice too i feel like i've got it together now what if these two pieces of wood were somehow united so this and this i want to make these two work so what shall i do [Music] what would you do i don't care it's not about you it's about me all right got a plan i got a plan i got a plan i got a plan i'm gonna stick these two pieces of wood together and we're gonna use the wilmot cointreau which is the ultimate grinder in the universe the ultimate grinding power in the universe and that's a fact this is the old wilmot over here we got a new motor a new vfd new drive wheel and this is the new wilmont over here and the truth is is i took apart another grinder i had to make this work because i really like this grinder all right i'm going to turn it sideways uh with there we go very easily it'll turn with kind of one finger i'm going to put the light out of the way for now i'm going to use a wheel pull that out too i can get my wheel how big of a wheel do i want this wheel i'll use this wheel see if we can't match these up wheel and we want a belt we'll use about a uh whatever this is with a 60 we'll get a 65 that should work good looks like nobody actually makes a 65 so we'll use a 60. so there's this formula for surface area if i polish it and make it perfect fit like a lens out of a binocular and i stick that to another piece of wood guess what it doesn't really want to stick but if i use like 60 or 80 grit i make more surface area and more surface area means more bonding surface so that's what i'm going to do so this will be the back part of the handle and this will be the front part of the handle so what i'm going to do is the radius from this wheel i'm going to grind that in there and then i'm going to match these two up and then i'm going to glue them together all right i've got a 60 grit red label abrasive belt on here i've got my wilmot cointreau flipped sideways all right that looks pretty good maybe i'll take it to 120 and that might make me happier now i'm going to match this piece to this piece problem i just found it here is this piece has a huge crack in it so there's a crack that's probably why i threw it in that scrap and i'll show you where as you can see but if it's it's too short so we'll put you back little fella you could probably use this piece this piece good good no cracks let's see let's match these two pieces up like right here make this one match this one [Music] yeah it's flat nice flat okay now i'm going to flat one side of this too flat this [Music] okay both are flat get a pencil would you do my magical joker pencil where is it matt oh there's i like to give myself at least you know overall four and a half five inches of wood i do have a bolster that's about three quarters of an inch so don't make handle too long let's see that should work maybe this would work better or maybe this would work better oh i think i like that the best find something to put that up oh you know what i'm gonna do improvise so a lot of stuff i don't make rules about this and probably heard me say it a hundred times i don't make rules i just try and figure out what will work and i'm liking the way this looks so here's what i'm gonna do i'm gonna trace the arc that i just ground in here on that piece of wood and i'm gonna make these two match up all right so first thing i'll do is i'll cut i won't take the line i'm gonna cut right on the outside of the line always have stuff all over your shop where everything's in the way and you have to move that stuff to get to the other thing always always a good plan all right now i'm just going to bring this to the line i like that you can move this thing it it wants to be either flat or when you get it here it wants to be upright i really dig that set this up set this up there we go okay looks like i've solved that problem now i'm gonna take my one two three block and make sure this the plate the rest is squared up with the platen and then i'm gonna grind right to the line i'm gonna take that line there's a 120 grit belt on here right now okay you can see cut right to the line let's see if they match up take this piece in this piece now let's see look a little bit on each end so i got a little gap so i'm going to take a little bit more off each side easier way to do this is use a finer point so one of the things that that pencil line is about uh seven thousandths so what i'll do is i'll go back put this here put this here i'll draw it again but i'll use something a little finer so what i'll do is instead of using the pencil i'm going to use this scribe to cut my line to draw my line and then that should be perfect so see it's a little bit finer of a line [Music] take it to that yeah that's better a little bit more why'd i make it a curve i don't really know just thought it'd be fun to make it a curve [Applause] come on it didn't take that long don't grind your forehead off when you do this [Music] all right i think we got this soft sure oh that's good okay i cannot see any light through this this is what i want all right great it's exactly what i want now next part so another thing that i want to remember is that i'm actually going to be running the tang of the knife through here so i will have more support going through here so i could use epoxy or i could use usually wood glues are not great for the stabilized and african black with a very oily this one is very oily and this is you know these things get more like acrolyzed so an acrylic glue a real super glue not the cheap actually expensive junk from the um what do you call that big box store i said it right that time so i want to get closer to the length that i'm going to need for the handle and i'm going to use this big inaccurate speed square so i'll just give it a 5 inch so i can cut that off now the reason i'm doing this is i want a square bottom of square top so i can clamp them together really good and that will be very beneficial to me yeah this square is the most ridiculous i don't know why we have one so big i'm not sure what i was what was i using this for fast triangle call it what you will i don't care saw that part off so i square in on both ends okay so these two pieces are gonna be together a little more all right i like that that looks good they look like they're fitting yes okay so next thing i'm going to do is prep them and we'll stick them together okay so i'm going to use this my block here as a base to glue this stuff on so i don't have the wood stick to this i'm going to put some masking tape down on it because the glue can stick to the masking tape that's fine and the masking tape will grind off really easily so you know but if the wood sticks to the stone it's really difficult to get them apart so let's get some acetone on here clean that really good get all the dust off of it clean this really good get all the dust off of it all right shake that one more time make sure i'm going the right direction here's what i'm gonna do this goes here this goes here that should work awesomely test fit always test fit looks real good mm-hmm yeah i don't see any gaps this is my like that all right and we'll make it so you don't want this all over me but it more than likely will happen and gonna lay them together like that and then i'm going to do this there we go so if it sticks to that no big deal and it'll it'll cure pretty quick so i just prepping my block uh the what i've found with the soup this kind of super glue it'll make this bond to this because when you stabilize a piece of wood you're basically filling the pores with the type of polymer plastic or acrylic this stuff likes to stick to it and that's good because the african blackwood is so oily this stuff will stick to it very good so i've had good success with this before and i'm gonna just keep doing it now that'll dry once it dries i'll cut the shape clean it up on both sides with the disc sander or whatever sander if you don't have a disc sander doesn't matter and then you end up with a bond that looks like this now you can see the contrast really easy in here you can see that's a nice clean bond now because this is a full tang what i did was i bagged it with g10 liners and i'll show you so don't use that fiber spacer stuff this is a piece of g10 it's like i don't know 20 000 or so maybe a little thicker but that's great for liner spacer material and it just it just supports the bond of these two pieces of wood they're stuck really well but i also back them with that and then i've got my carta pins in here so i have little black pins and when i'm finished buffing that those pins will pretty much disappear so it's not shaped yet just so you know unshaped and that's the same thing we'll do here difference is i'll drill down through this so that i can get the knife into it i'm going to trim some more off because i really don't want more than from from the choil the heel here to the back of the handle i really only want about five inches of handle i really don't need a giant long handle so i'll probably cut a little bit more like this much off you know what i mean so i hope that makes some sense i hope it helps you out is a neat way to take your really beautiful pieces of wood that's not big enough for many things and make them work for you it'll work on a full tang or a hidden tang and i want you to continue to enjoy making knives and bladesmithing and i want you to allow me to do it you can go over and if you like what we're doing go support us on patreon there's a lot of great stuff over there you can watch it over here on youtube and just support us on patreon anyway also
