ford mustang maki and over here is the tesla model y i'm not so sure about that comparison dad do you think they directly compete well i think a better comparison would be a squished catfish and a mustang that's had a little bit too many haagen-dazs for its own good what we have here are two electric crossovers two vehicles of the future and in this video we're going to compare them we are created the personal computer and in that same way this tesla completely changes the way the car works for instance i no longer need a traditional key all i need is this my telephone this serves as my key it serves as my software updater which allows the car to actually update itself and add more features and best of all it completely allows me to control the car and do things like well open the front there you have it so tommy do you have a phone key and do you have a frunk my dad is looking just a little bit smug over there but not so fast because the new mustang maki also has phone as a key capability it's called fordpass it's an app here on your phone and you can control things like the windows and the horn and you can lock and unlock it but you can't get into the front using the key you actually have to pull a lever so let me go do that [Music] now the frunk in the ford has a number of dividers in here you can remove this to get a full big cubby but even cooler than that if you take a peek down at the base there's a drain hole because this frunk is intended to be used as a cooler how neat is that i think that is such a cool idea a couple of cup holders here that's pretty smart and to be fair just like the apple macintosh the uh tesla has a couple more party tricks that you pay for so for instance if we had actually opted for what is now a 10 000 option full self driving i could use this phone to actually summon my car from the parking lot it would actually drive itself over to me so i wouldn't have to walk over there how cool is that tommy you know how many times i've seen that in action how many absolutely none because we have legs for a reason just walk to the car it's not a big deal okay it's not about the functionality but it's about the fact that tesla is changing the way the cars are not only built but the way they're used and the way they drive let me show you another thing that tesla changed come on with me alex to get into the tesla i could of course use my phone key or check out this handle i push on the back and i open how cool is that tommy do you have a traditional handle or is yours a little bit cooler than that well ford has completely gone away with the door handle altogether and has instead installed buttons that's right door unlock buttons in the maki push the button and you grab onto this little winglet to open the door and it gets even weirder in the back because you have the button but no winglets so when you push the button a little plunger actually forces the door out you kind of see it here ah that little dude that is what controls the door opening and closing now as many of you know the model y is basically a crossover version of the model 3. it's taller it's roomier and of course it has a lot more room in the back some may call this a crossover you know with this huge opening in the back oh did you hear that it's more like a very tall hatchback but nevertheless this car is basically a crossover now your mustang tommy is also a crossover let's face it yeah and it doesn't do this that is the sound of the hatch banging against the side of the body work because it doesn't fit properly are you ready oh that's brutal let's go see what the ford is up to so ford markets the maki as a mustang and if there was any doubt uh take a quick peek around the car and you will find no fewer than 12 000 prancing pony logos in fact there's no ford logo is there tommy well if you look at the key check this out bam you still have a key really dearborn pride dad and yes i have a key because having a key is brilliant even in 2021 now in my opinion they should have called this thing the galaxy wouldn't that have been more clever but anyways just like the tesla you can use the ford app to open the trunk push and hold the button there it goes this is also considered a crossover it does have that sloping rear end much like the tesla but the seats fold down this is probably uh no definitely the most practical mustang ever is it a mustang i really am i'm really hung up on this i apologize viewers out there oh look there's all your charging paraphernalia yeah it's not a mustang tommy i like your galaxy e much better you know it's ford's way of trying to bring i think their brand into the future with electricity and they wanted to leverage obviously one of their strongest vehicles which is the mustang but yeah it's not a mustang i mean there are some like turn signals resemblances to the typical mustang but um it's a crossover okay at least it doesn't look like a door stop so i'm going to call that a win [Music] well now let me ask you a question sure with the trendiness of this interior which whole foods do you often shop at the most is it the one in downtown boulder or is it the one in north boulder because i think this is a little bit too urban chic for my taste here you know you are right about one thing tommy and that isn't where i shop it's about the fact that this is a very minimalist interior right so all you really have is the screen and a couple of buttons on the steering wheel and a couple of window switches over here otherwise um that's it right and i kind of like that because this to me feels like the future and yes there are compromises in the modern future and that is you have to learn the operating system but once you learn it it becomes very intuitive very quickly so even though there are only two switches on the steering wheel i know exactly what these switches do and i could very easily for instance raise my volume or answer the telephone or change my rear view mirrors alright so do me a favor pop the glove box all right that only took three times as long as it should have okay do me another favor here why don't you go ahead and telescope in that steering wheel uh that's gonna take a little bit of time well let's see it it's gonna take a little bit of time yeah because you have to go here and then you have to go here and then you have to push that left knob it's too much time but you know what the the thing is i don't actually have to do that because right there where it says my name it completely memorized all of my settings okay a couple things i do think are really cool so the vents in this vehicle are controlled entirely by this the touch screen and you can control where the air flows by moving your finger and then this big central vents will actually automatically distribute the air where you point it very cool thing the heated seats are controlled by these bacon strips where do they live right here so i can control my heated seats by tapping on the the various heat locations i mean it does a lot of cool stuff quick question for you where is the power button there is no power button there is no power button yeah and that's on purpose because the car is actually ready to go all you have to do is bring the key in uh put your foot on the brake hit drive and away you go and you know to me this feels very modern this feels very now this feels very um thoughtfully designed to take all the things that distract you from driving and move them away from you keeping you focused on just the steering wheel and the road and uh the prodigious amount of power that this vehicle has i completely disagree you spend more time trying to sort through the carpool karaoke uh and trying to find where your heated seat is do you have carpool karaoke i don't but why wouldn't they outside can you make actually can you make your seat fart i do not need to listen can you make your seat first no that is ridiculous that they do not leave me can you can you make your car sound like a tie fighter no why would you want that because it's cool it's not cool it's like an apple computer it's cool all right let's jump in yours and show me the path guys full disclosure this is a tesla model y performance it directly competes with the mustang mach egt which ford does not build yet so we're really comparing apples to well granny apples but i just wanted to make sure you understood that we understand that these two cars while they do compete are not of the same performance levels oh you my friend are mistaken dad this is not the past this is a 15 and a half inch display which is half an inch larger than that in a tesla how many steps do you have to go through to actually drive this car okay one two oh wow that was uh that was a lot of work started in the vehicle you're right dad that my apologies what's that strange sound that we're hearing it does augment some engine note okay which you can turn on and off depending on how you feel but best part of the whole vehicle ready look at this it moves up and down when i want it to move up and down how i want it mirror controls what a concept i can fold them i can also adjust them via a switch and even better what's your apple car play like i don't have apple carplay don't have apple carplay i have wireless apple carplay how about that but i have slacker slacker who uses slacker well apparently i do because i don't have apple carplay what even is slacker this right here is the heart of the interior in the mustang mock ea 15 and a half inch display yeah basically what four did was they took the apple tesla ipad and turned it the other way well no they also added a knob so it's better but it does some cool things this is the new sync 4 system i've got my carplay large and in charge right here i have various audio controls also here in the center and take a look at like the heated seat slider are you ready for this look at that i can actually slide my heated seat on and off depending on how hot i want it you know i've had a lot of experience with ford's sink system and over the years it has not all been wine and rose's time you've been driving this car around how does this perform well this one is all new yes that's that's not join me with comfort and i do have to say yeah they haven't made it better i fear it's uh it's a it's a little bit overwrought and it is slow to respond and it i think he's supposed to push him no but i want to slide down there is it there i mean it's got these various panels that'll show you important metrics and stuff but it's it's all a little bit slow and clunky yeah and does it do uh over-the-air updates yes it does it does do over the years does it do significant over the year updates for instance when we had the model 3 it actually made the car quicker right tesla improved the amount of performance via over there update will ford do that apparently ford can do whatever they want on an over-the-air update because i think it controls every module within the car so if they wanted to make it fart i'm sure someone at ford mr bill ford could be like ah my three-year-old would like that let me turn that up what what's unbridled and proportional proportion sound you are you are about to experience something cool ready yeah engage yeah is the kind of standard go-to drive mode there's whisper that's for when you really want to tone it down and unbridled that's a horse thing so that is like the sport performance mode it turns everything brown and that's how you get the most performance out of the mustang i'd call that bronze do you have more than one camera uh yes i do i absolutely do i have a 360 view camera which you do not have by the way that is a pretty cool thing i have a heated steering wheel which you do not have by the way i have a glass roof which you have as well and look at this ready yeah glove box and spin look and speaking of things that you do not have right yeah and let's be honest here electric cars are like real estate it's about real estate location location location with cars it's about range range range and in this model you don't have range i do how much do you have plenty how much i have plenty of rain this is the premium standard range all-wheel drive yeah and it can go a mind-boggling 211 miles according to the epa when was the last time you drove 211 miles in a day you'd have to stop for the bathroom like a hundred times knowing knowing you dead you know i could drive another 71 miles past when this actually runs up exactly 281 and that's the performance model if i actually had the dual motor long range model i could go well over 300 yeah it's 291 for the performance uh this ford though this is the shortest range model there is one that will go 300 miles if you get the big bad in your wheel drive what's your mpge according to the epa ready for this yes 93 okay you know what the tesla's is the performance version i do know what the tesla's which what is it tommy it's a hundred and eleven that's right yes yes it's about twenty percent better it's it's a little bit better than the ford four or four it'll work it out they got the over the year update so they're gonna make it more efficient mark my words they're gonna they're gonna make this thing a beast as they kind of iron out some of the inefficiencies all right well i think it's time we take the tesla fluoride before we take this for a spin all right let's give it a whirl full disclosure number two we bought this tesla as a long-term review vehicle and we paid 63 000 for it ford lent us this mock e for a week while it didn't come with a monroney we did configure it on the computer and it turns out it's about 50 000 so yes it's less expensive and yes it's once again apples to granny smith all right i have a question for you okay the other thing that electric cars are about of course is charging rate how fast does that one charge well we're gonna find out we are yep so in a future video we are taking both of these vehicles on the world's toughest ev test the loveland trials and at the base of the loveland pass we're going to plug them in and see which one charges faster when they're near dead so that is coming up soon but for today we're just going to take a kind of a short spin around the neighborhood and talk about how these vehicles drive now of course both are electric and they're both very quiet yes very very quiet and that's because of course being electric vehicles there's really no noise to listen to i mean it's an electric motor it just wars along both of these are all wheel drive yes which means they have two motors one in the front one in the back the tesla model y is only available in all-wheel drive the maki you can get with one motor in the rear or two motors front and back yep and they both have regenerative braking and we're going to test that as well coming down the mountain when we go up the loveland trials yeah absolutely now first impressions um why does it ride like a cabbage cart because this is the performance version it's the sporty one so it's got a little bit more of a sporty setup the suspension is a little bit harder but it also does this tommy let me just pull up here and we'll just give it a little bit of juice you ready three two one here we go that's way too fast yeah that's absurd and the final and by far the most important full disclosure is that ford still has their federal tax credit that means if you buy amaki you'll get a 7 500 tax credit from uncle sam and if you live in colorado if you buy it this year 2020 you'll get an additional four thousand dollars this was one heck of an expensive vehicle for ford to develop now there is one thing that's a little bit concerning if i go here in the settings yeah go to charge yeah we have an 80 state of charge yeah and it's showing 116 miles of predicted range whoa that is a number that maybe ford should be hiding it's a little bit cold outside it's 28 degrees and we do have the heater on this vehicle does not have a heat pump like the tesla which is a fancy way to heat a vehicle with little energy but that is that is a concern so we'll we'll do some range tests in the cold and see what it actually is in the in the real world now i'm going to go ahead and engage a different drive mode are you ready yes let's engage the brown mode i think it's more of a bronze color whatever it is that it's the sporty driving mode and one of the best parts about this maki yeah i actually have a display in front of the steering wheel i love that actually yeah so unlike the tesla i'm not constantly glancing over to see what my speed is i got one right here and it does these cool geometric patterns as i accelerate so we're about to unleash 266 horsepower of fury in other words 266 horses right unbridled well 428 pound-feet of torque all right let's see what that feels like in three two one floored [Music] it's okay uh you know i think up to about 25 you're getting a lot of torque after that it seems to kind of level off i would say it's plenty quick for 95 percent of people uh if you want the quicker version you can get the bigger battery in this one or you can stack step up to the full on gt but yes it's uh it's it's not tesla quick i'm not even sure it's standard dual motor quick let alone the performance but it's uh you know it's enough to kind of throw you back in your space there young man hold your horses you can't step up to the gt because it's not available yet it will be soon though it's saying this summer it's on its way yeah i like the bronco it's on its way yeah it's good i mean it's uh it's responsive now it does have this cool propulsion sound which is for some reason not willing to turn on right now and i've tried resetting it but that's the story for another day on the road this is a much better ride than tesla i agree you know we've put on some little weather tires with uh smaller wheels and you're right this does have a much more uh let's call it uh well uh refined ride having sat in this thing and driven it around just a little bit i also feel like it's screwed together better yes it is much less rattly and squeaky to put it gently i mean everything you touch is really well uh just finished before knows how to build a car it's very polished maybe having said that though tommy there's still some plastics you know there's sports can seem to get away from some some cost cutting at some point but the good news is ford has done some things exactly right as i let off the throttle here yep full-on regenerative braking brings me to a complete stop easily brings me to a stop i never need to use the friction brakes and these heated seats are burning my ass they are incredible yeah and as they come to a stop look at this i don't have my foot on the brake because it doesn't have creep at least in the mode i'm in right now so that good job ford you really nailed that the one thing i will say tommy is i do love the interior design i do love that screen but uh it does feel like a little bit more of a traditional car a little bit less special uh you know than the tesla does yeah a little bit less hard to use in the tesla does if you know what i mean well that's another way of describing it i do like this double binnacle that they've got you know going back uh to the old mustang yeah that's that's about as big of a nod to a mustang as you're gonna get in here except for of course all the ponies everywhere even in the brown mode it's not as fun to drive as a tesla the steering gets heavier but it the whole car just isn't as nimble it's not as possible as the model y now in order to charge the uh maki when you're on a road trip for example you are going to have to use a third-party charger like electrify america evgo charge point because it has a different plug it's not part of the tesla ecosystem so you are going to have to get a little bit more creative when it comes to keeping this piece charged but overall tommy i'm really impressed uh by the maki i think that uh you know this is a much nicer job for all you old schoolers on the focus cd if you remember that that was on the old jay leno show yes apart from tesla from the more established automakers this is by far the best ev i've ever driven i mean it's it's the best sorted it's the best in terms of technology it's the best in terms of electric integration i mean this is a ground-up electric vehicle it's not some converted thing ford has done it right with the maki it's just it's so hard to compete with the likes of the model y having said that that there are a few glitches here and there like the back of camera which is having a 1970s dance party on me whoa what is up with that dude i mean how do you get this thing to sound cool well you can turn on the propulsion sound by clicking that button okay it just turned itself off yeah what's going on there just turn itself off on oh okay for your safety some have been disabled all right let me stop here wait wait it disabled the sound while you're moving like that somehow it's gonna distract you okay ready yeah okay we're stopped okay um there we go there we go no no he doesn't want to make the sound there's a couple bugs to work out dude that tesla will fart all day long great dad that's awesome i appreciate that's one of the key selling points [Music] apple or dell in other words tesla or ford either way you probably won't go wrong and if the battle computer battles of old are any sign of things to come i think ford's got a hit on its hands yeah i mean i think the fort is an all-around better car it feels better screwed together it's more comfortable it's easier to use in a tesla however i'm not convinced it's a better electric car i think tesla still has the edge when it comes to battery technology and charging infrastructure so important things to keep in mind yeah and for me the uh tesla is a more fun car but we have to test the gt version of this before we can actually you know put the seal of tfl approval on that absolutely and ford i mean yeah you did a good job with the maki it is a proper effort from an established manufacturer in creating a ground up evie all right let's take it up the world's toughest electric car tesla we're actually going to make even
