Flying the Twin Beech (Beech 18)

I didn't fly 7-0 tango Bravo here during Oshkosh I just flew in and then I'm gonna leave again he is soon but I did have a very memorable flight in a twin beach that's the beach 18 wonderful airplane Jeff Schultz who I know from Beach Talk offered me a ride and here's how that went this is my 1956 Beechcraft the 18s it's a twin Beach it's got two radial engines they're nine hundred eighty five cubic inches and they produce 450 horsepower they're carbureted supercharged engines so they lose manifold pressure as you gain altitude the airplane seats seven to eight depending on a configuration it has face to face seating and a bench that can be placed in place of two seats it cruises about a hundred and fifty knots hundred and sixty dots depending on how much you you want it's a conventional tailwheel airplane and it's a handful on the ground but it flies beautifully once it's in the air the tail wheels non steerable so you steer with differential braking differential power I have owned it for a year and a half prior to that it was originally delivered to Dallas Love Field I have pictures from the Internet of it with no paints at Dallas Love Field in 1956 for a good chunk of its early life it flew corporate executives around it was owned in Oklahoma and Washington State in California I believe the Washington State owner was a dentist and he I believe he was a navy veteran it's actually never been a military airplane but because if he was a Navy veteran I believe he put the Navy training command paint scheme on it and remembrance of his military history I don't know that for a fact that that's from its history and its location when it got painted that's where I suspect all right who is excited about a twin Beach right you got the two vertical stabilizers that's very characteristic entrance to the aircraft is via the este door yes their doors here in the back and then we get into the cabin storage space on the right this looks like it might be a potty seat here it is a potty seat and then we go one two three four five seats in the cabin and I could get used to that and the cockpit [Music] and I said in it once before the windshield looks pretty small from here but the visibility from this plane is actually excellent both forward and and to the site and there are these windows up here on both the right and the left side that provide very very good visibility out of the cockpit I can't help but take a quick peek at our neighbor here the albatross wow that's a beautiful airplane good morning so I'm gonna give each of you a chance and the copilot seat all right who among you is a multi-engine pilot just Galen that way not quite Martin is working on his Martin got a ride in the copilot seat on Saturday so gaylen's have been the takeoff position a couple things to note that there's a safety chain right here on the door that hooks otherwise it's a standard Beechcraft airstair door twist it open twist this way to latch it there's emergency exit on the right side right behind the table you lift the cover you push the button you pull the lever you shove it out if it's an emergency don't worry about my airplane if it's not an emergency don't open that door oh my go do the takeoff briefing now so that everybody hears it so we're gonna taxi out whatever runway we get we're gonna have plenty of distance we're gonna line up and we're gonna set 30 inches looks good sounds good we're going to release the brakes then we're gonna set 36 and a half or shy of that just a bit whoever's in the copilot seat can let me know because then I can keep my eyes down the runway twin Beach has a castering nonce terrible tail wheel it is lockable but it can get a handful on the runway once we get 36 power take-off power set by that time the tail will be flying so I'll call take tail flying airspeed alive we get the rotation which is between 90 100 miles an hour we'll rotate our decision point is the gear in transition if the gear is in transition we're going to continue flying and have an engine failure be a airborne emergency will do the drill mixture props throttles flaps gear identify verify and feather feather is a button on top there's two one for each engine you push it it feathers you hold it in unfeathered after we take off we reach blue line we'll start climbing and once we're climbing at blue line we set take climb power which is 30 inches 2,000 rpm if we have an engine failure after that point will increase the power to maximum continuous which is 33 inches 2200 rpm if that's not enough we'll go to takeoff power but it shouldn't be we're not that heavy you have an excited load of passengers here including me so here's the chain guys and it just hooks right there this was because people kept of the albatross thank you okay so it looks like the way this works is pilot has to call the warbird ground control tell them he's ready and start up should happen any moment you want a checklist there's one play over on with a few locks great I've never I just do it myself but if you want to follow along go ahead alright coming back with the yoke everybody got your seatbelt fastened start the right one first clear my side not yet get everybody hear me I can't Thank You sounds like they want to do is a run up here so 3/4 gonna wait a little bit warm up we're gonna wait a bit to warm might clear that cone okay yeah the tanks waiting queue up in line and once he's close to the runway the controllers out there will be holding up a factor with the frequency for you to monitor it'll be a little bit that looks like there's a long line this morning yeah I'd have to wait a bit horse this all the way in these are going out oh yeah it's autumn it's all the way in okay if you could hold the sign up for him every side oh look at the tail wheel lock hold it higher they can't see it right over the top I bout to get that off oh that's a lot of departures come on back [Applause] oh My friend Jeff Schulz from BeechTalk kindly invited me to join him on a couple of flights in his Beech 18 during AirVenture 2019. I had never before stepped onto a Twin Beech, let alone flown in one. I was impressed by the spacious cabin and the performance.

Compared with my A36 and even even with a Baron, the many systems, switches, levers and gauges in a Twin Beech sure look like a handful to handle. I captured one of the flights on video. I hope you enjoy the result.
