Lines at SFO wrapping around check in counters as travelers continue to face canceling lines and delays. One way or another, we're getting home tonight. And if we have to rent a car ourselves, then that's exactly what we'll do. Some travelers waiting hours just to reschedule their flight. Good evening. I'm Julie Julie Haener and I'm Mike Mibach problems on the east coast have a ripple effect. Closer to home combined. Hundreds of delays and cancellations out at San Francisco international just today is Jana Katsuyama live tonight at sfo. And Jenny, i guess you could call it a busy day out there. Oh so busy. Mike and Julie and also very frustrating and exhausting for a lot of these passengers. Some who had to wait overnight and the timing couldn't be worse. Airlines are trying to rebook some of these travelers just as tomorrow is supposed to be the busiest travel day of the July fourth holiday weekend. At SFO Wednesday, passengers waited hours in a line that stretched from United's customer service desk across Terminal three. Have been waiting, at least for two hours now. And in my flight to Portland has been delayed twice. We arrived from Sydney, Australia at 7 a.m. this morning and when we got here we were moved to six different gates. This woman and her daughter, who were flying to Nashville for a dance competition, said the flight was finally canceled. They turn around and say it's canceled because they were missing one crew member. Many passengers, exhausted, say they had been stranded overnight. We are overwhelmed. Frustrated, Tired and sad. Like just overwhelmed. Actually, right now, this woman says her family arrived from Helsinki Tuesday night, headed to meet family in Hawaii. And after waiting ten hours, the aircraft arrived. But then they told us that the theirs they were missing stuff, staff people. So they were not enough crew crew members. Wednesday evening, nearly 5800 US flights were delayed 1000 or more flights were canceled, according to FlightAware, creating a domino effect that rippled through the nation as aircraft and crews were caught out of position. Planes packed ahead of the 4th of July holiday weekend had few seats to spare. The problem is, is that if you miss a flight or something's canceled, it's even harder to get on something. Now storms on the East Coast caused some of the delays, the weather forcing the FAA to temporarily ground planes bound for Boston. United Airlines CEO also blamed the FAA for delays, saying there was a shortage of air traffic controllers. But Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said airlines are scheduling more flights than they can handle. We know that nobody can control the weather, but anything under our control at the FAA, we're going to be working on and anything under the airline's control, they need to step up and take responsibility as airlines nationwide are struggling to rebook, travelers, passengers are paying the price. Everything was closed in the airport because it was an I. So we were with our water because we don't have our luggage. I can still find my luggage. We're going to try to rent a car and just drive home all the way to Boise. Yeah yeah. Ten hours. Yeah. A long drive there. Now there could be more trouble in the coming days. Friday is the deadline for airlines to finish upgrading their equipment, so there is no interference with those new 5G wireless systems. Most of the airlines say they have upgraded, but Delta says they still have 190 planes that are still waiting for parts. So Mike, really the bottom line here tonight and through the weekend is if you are going to be traveling, make sure you check on any cancellations before you come to the airport. And when you do get here, just be ready to pack a little patience along with you for some of those long lines. It almost has the feel of that day before Thanksgiving kind of vibe to it, hopefully a lot smoother com
